The Last Kingdom is one of those rare series that actually gets a lot better as the seasons go on. Season 1 and 2 are ok, but 3,4 and 5 are really good. Uthred and Alfred are brilliant characters.

Vikings was a historical show that took many embellished liberties whereas The Last Kingdom (TLK) is a historical fiction that takes historical context more seriously. At anycase, we are looking forward to the next 45 videos worth of content. :)

It was tucked away on a lesser-known channel before almost getting canceled and moved to Netflix, then the show got ended before they finished the rest of the books, so they ended up having to rush through the last books in one "movie". It was totally underrated by the general populace.

The Last Kingdom is my second favourite show of all time. It has never been advertised enough by Netflix, and it deserves so much more exposure! It’s a hidden gem that is masterfully acted, written and designed, and I’m so thankful to see reactors like you guys finally giving this show a go. Trust me, you will really enjoy this one.

I'm pretty sure it was co-produced by the BBC, which is the case with the best shows on Netflix (Peaky Blinders is a full BBC production), and HBO for that matter (Rome, ridiculously underrated btw).

In Vikings we travelled with the Norwegians. Now You deal with the Viking superpower: The Danes. Better organized. Far larger in numbers. The Norwegian Vikings maily came to England to hit and run. The Danes have come to conquer and stay and make England a Danish realm.

Here is a little history lesson for the events before and up to the end of the first episode (no spoilers). Historical background: At this point in history, England as a country does not exist. The British Isles are ruled independently between various cultural groups - the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Britons, and the English. While the Vikings fought against all of these groups, this show is focused on the conflict between the Vikings and English. The English were divided into several small kingdoms: Northumbria in the north, Mercia in the center, East Anglia in the east, and Wessex in the south. Initial invasion: Ragnar Lothbrok was captured and killed by King Aella of Northumbria. In retaliation, Ragnar's sons led an invasion and killed Aella and captured several major cities/forts. The English were losing, so the remaining English kings of Mercia and Wessex negotiated a peace, allowing the Vikings to keep a big chunk of territory called the Danelaw. The Danes: The Vikings are called Danes in this show. They are a bunch of warlords who banded together to fight the English. Earl Ragnar (Uhtred's adopted dad) fights for Ubba, but they aren't related. The Danes are split between those who want to settle the land they've conquered (like Earl Ragnar) and those who just want to conquer and raid (like Ubba). Events in the first episode: The last 3 independent rulers of Northumbria band together to fight the Danes (one being Uhtred's father). They lose, and so the Danes conquer the rest of Northumbria, often ruling through English puppets like Uhtred's uncle. At this point, the Danelaw has conquered all of Northumbria, East Anglia, and most of Mercia. The Mercians are too beaten to fight back. So, Wessex is "The Last Kingdom" of the English that has not yet been subjugated by the Danes. Queue the rest of the show! Historical accuracy: This is based on a book series which is historical fiction. Many of the major characters, their achievements, the battles and events in the show are historically accurate or semi-accurate. Like any series, the writers still take some creative liberties. Uhtred is highly fictional. But he needs to be, since he's basically our tour guide for this period of early-English history.

This show is spectacular. And the book series it’s based on is arguably even greater. I’d gotten invested into this book series after finding out I am mostly Dane & Norse in heritage. That sparked a heavy interest into me studying the Viking Age. This show launches Uhtred’s main story in approximately 871 CE, which is right before Alfred takes the throne in Wessex from his brother Aethelred. It’s nearly a century after the raid on Lindisfarne & the Viking’s first landing on English shores. Where we come in, is where Ragnar’s sons & the Vikings would’ve been avenging their father’s death in Northumbria, which explains why that is where our story here begins. In the book we got both Ubbe & Ivar. For this show and it’s pacing, they’ve consolidated them into just one character - Ubbe. But just know, this is the era of Ragnar’s sons on their quest for vengeance, taking England by storm, and leaving just the last kingdom of Wessex for the taking. This show is far more historically-based than “Vikings”, which takes a little getting used to, but it opens the door for a lot more learning & amazement along the way realizing most of what we’re watching is how it happened! Prepare to meet some more familiar faces as well as meet many new ones. Can’t wait for you guys to meet the actor who plays King Alfred in this show, he does a phenomenal job. So glad to join you guys for this series after Saul!

The books were written by Bernard Cornwell and yes, he tries his best to weave a story around historical accuracy. This is one of those rare occasions where I love the books, and I love the series. Enjoy!

I devoured the first book in the series yesterday and finished more than half of the second today (I know they aren't massive, I'm rusty in reading skills though), and I have to agree. The book Uhtred is... not particularly likeable, and I think him being the sole POV character is responsible for that, he comes off as an objective narrator who feels indifferent at most times and claims to be angry at other times. I really like Cornwell's storytelling and world-building, especially the pacing, but I actually wanted Uhtred to be punished the first time in the book. I will say that he's turning around somewhat, towards the end of the second book, but I prefer his interactions with other characters to most of his quiet contemplation. All the other characters seem so much more interesting, which makes me wish the book was a third-person narrative,and Uhtred could stop excusing his blatant stupidity as symbolic of 'boyhood' when there are cleverer men all around him (it also doesn't help that his elder self is technically narrating because that signifies a lack of growth). Please let me know if this improves because I much prefer to show Uhtred to book Uthred at this stage.

I'm sure youve been told by now but just a heads up the Ragnar family in this one is not the Lothbrok family. It's been a few decades since Ragnar Lothbrok died. The Ragnar family in this show the Ravn bloodline. Ravn the grandfather. And Ragnar Ravnson, the Lord of the house. Young Ragnar is Ragnar Ragnarson and of course now you've met Uhtred Ragnarson, the adopted son

In a later episode Ubbe is said to have traveled to Ireland to avenge his brothers death. In real life Halfdan Ragnarsson was killed in Ireland in a battle with the ruling Danes, though I dont know if any of his brothers ever did try to take revenge.

Ah this show did characters wonderfully. Each had a very clear primary motivation that didn't always play nice with the usual tv narrative tropes. And the relationship between Uhtred and the King is one of the most complex ones you'll see on a show throughout the seasons. Film students and authors should watch this show and learn from it when it comes to how to do real characters, flaws and all.

Ragnar isn't actually Ragnar Lothbrok, the name was just super common at the time - plus he'd be dead by the time the series happens (his sons have already come to England to avenge his death) and Ubba in this series (aka Ubbe in Vikings) is meant to be the son of the actual Ragnar, as was said in the sagas.

Your channel just came up on my recommendations because it knows I love the Last Kingdom. It's great to see someone start their journey with this programme. I'm almost envious! The characters in this show can frustrate you, make you laugh and make you proper cry. I am from Wessex so I'm naturally a bit biased, however I love people from both sides of the conflict. I love the music in this show too. So some historical/timeline context. Bebbanburg, or modern day Bamburgh, is on the coast of Northumbria in north east England. It's just across the sea from the island of Lindisfarne where the first Viking raid took place. We are about 100 years after that first raid. England doesn't exist. Instead there are different kingdoms such as Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia. In this episode we saw Northumbria fall under Dane control. The only kingdom still under Saxon rule is Wessex which is ruled by Athelred, grandson of Egbert or Ecbert in Vikings. Egbert is dead. The Ubba they mentioned is the son of Ragnar Lothbrok. I think you're really gonna enjoy this series. It's so well paced and brilliantly acted.

Btw Last Kingdom does not mirror Vikings on purpose. The first novel was published in 2004. Ubba is Ubba Lothbrok, son of Ragnar. Historically Rollo was not Ragnar's brother, that was fictional Vikings thing.

LETS GO! FINALLY! Seeing you enjoy the series already makes me super happy! Just to give you a heads up, none of these characters have any relation to the original Vikings show. There are occasional mentions/easter eggs of characters you may know but for the most, there's no relation. I would also like to say, the representation of Alfred The Great in this show is very very accurate in comparison to Vikings show. Uhtred as a character did not exist historically (that we know) but he is used as a representation of heroes like him who were never written about nor given credit. This show is seriously underrated, you guys will absolutely love it! I recently reacted to season 5 and I cannot wait for you to get there. This show ends beautifully.

Bernard Cromwell, who wrote the books this series is based on did EXTENSIVE research. Although there was an “Uhtred the Bold” he came along a couple of centuries later. So this “Uhtred” is a fictional character…but he becomes a beloved character. My most favorite series, ever.

This show is really good. But I've had friends who didn't like the first season, but loved it going into 2 and 3. So stick with it! Also, don't expect crossover characters from Vikings to be the same in this show. At this moment in history, Ragnar Lothbrok is dead and the Vikings have conquered a large part of England (Danelaw).

I think this show starts approx 10 years plus after end of Vikings - Prince Alfred is the same prince Alfred character in vikings just a bit older - you'll occasionally hear references to characters /events that were in Vikings but that's the only crossover. Steven was correct when he said about historical accuracy, this show is considered closer to history than vikings...so glad you're watching, this is a really great show which I think you'll both fully appreciate and enjoy 👍 ps. Ecgberht had been dead for 17 years when the show starts (he was never captured by Vikings). This takes place in Northumbria in 866. The priest tells the young son they have received a letter from King Aella, asking for support. After the battle, the Danes have just taken York. Then there is a time jump of several years. Historical events in the 2nd episode take place in 869-70. Prince Alfred is the younger brother of Aethelred, King of Wessex.

Uhtred is based on the real Uhtred from Bebbanburg, which today, is Bamburg Castle in Northumbria. This series is based on the excellent series of books by Bernard Cornwell. This series changes a few things from the books, but is much more historically accurate than Vikings was. They still diverge a bit to make a better tv show and the armor isn’t accurate. But, it’s a great show!

Right! I almost forgot to mention in my comments that there was an Uhtred as lord of Bebbanburg, just...a good 150-ish years later. (But Cornwell made it fit well enough because he just made it so all the eldest sons get named Uhtred.) Uhtred the Bold, Earl of Northumbria, who ruled in the very early 11th century.

😀 New sub here! I love The Last Kingdom, so I had to check you out. It's so much fun watching a beloved show through the eyes of a new viewer! I have to admit to watching each season multiple times. Two things that make this show in addition to what you have already mentioned: the music and the location names on screen. 🎶 The score is by John Lunn and Eivor (she is the vocalist), and they both have channels on YT. If you enjoy the music at all, then you should check out the full-length versions of each piece. Also, Eivor is singing in Faroese (as in Faroe Islands) which gives the lyric that ancient feel. I also appreciate how they show the historical place names and morph them into what we know them as today. As others have mentioned, this is a great show! Yes, it will be more violent than Vikings b/c Netflix has less restrictions on such things than the History channel would. Get ready for the ride...it is emotional! You will laugh, fall in love, cry, and everything else you could imagine. When it ends, the ending is actually good although you don't want it to end, of course! Enjoy!
