There was nothing wrong with this ship. It wasn't even that old. She entered service in 1990 and from what I read had a refit in 2019. My assumption is that due to the almost complete shutdown of the cruise industry due to Covid19 Carnival can't afford to keep their older ships operational and thus it was probably cheaper to sell them for scrap. A real shame.

I understand the lifetime of a ship, but it is still so, so very sad to see. I feel like it is killing an innocent person or animal. Ships have souls, personalities. Not the living kind obviously, but they have a feel of their own, even on her 7 sister ships, each was a bit different. (or on the 6 I have been on). On this view, vs. the beach view, I now see she is being beached next to the Pullmantur ship, either the former Sovereign or Monarch of the Seas. Both lines ships were still in great shape I think. If falling apart, then yes, time to get rid of them. But to scrap a working, beautiful ship... this virus has cost everyone so much. In so very many ways and now in cruising memories.

They probably aren't a Carnival crew. As I understand it, the normal way shipbreaking deals are structured is that title of the ship passes at a location before the final voyage to the breaking yard - sometimes part way on the journey to the breakers (perhaps even just a few miles offshore of the breakers' yard) and sometimes the last regular port of call. This is probably a Turkish crew employed to run her onto the beach. Many shipowners require their ships to be renamed for their final voyage to the breaker. Often this is done by shortening the name so that all the breaker has to do is paint over part of the name. However, the outside footage showed this did not happen to Carnival Fantasy - I guess Carnival felt people would understand its need to downsize its fleet in the current situation and felt no need to try to obfuscate what was happening. Even so, it is clear that a lot of people had fond memories of this ship and are sad to see it go.

It won’t be to long before the value of scrap metal is going to plummet The yard in Turkey has now got 3 cruise ships to deal with and it looks like they are running out of room So which decommissioned cruise ship would you tow out into deep water and deliberately sink
@burningisis4 жыл бұрын
There are dozens of cargo and tanker ships scrapped daily. The cost of scrap metal wont go down just because of a few cruise ships being scrapped. This is the best way to recycle a ship that cannot be sold to another line (even laying up a ship costs money). And deliberately sinking a ship to turn into a reef is far more expensive than the cost of scrapping. And if just deliberately sunk for the sake of getting rid of the ship is unheard of due to the ecological issues even in deep water. I'm not sure Carnival wants one of those. Inspiration is on her way to Aliaga right now (about a day or two out) and Fantasy was brought in very quickly once she arrived. I wouldnt be surprised if we didnt see 4 little maids all in a row, awaiting the breakers.
@michaelnunnery63944 жыл бұрын
Thyri Carver Who controls the price of scrap metal? Not the cruise lines The breakers yards know that the cruise lines are in a bind and they will squeeze Removing toxins is expensive yes Professionally sending a cruise ship to the bottom is expensive yes Imagine the shore excursion to beat all other excursions Charge cruise ship passengers $150 a time to go and visit an old friend

@HungryGuyStories4 жыл бұрын
@@JWH-01 Okay. I just did some "back of the napkin" calculations. A small cruise ship of the type being scrapped (not one of the monsters popular today) is about 100,000 tons. Steel sells for about $100 per ton. Assuming that you could convince a cruise line to sell one to you rather than to a scrap yard, you'd probably have to pay $100,000,000. But that sounds way too much to me, even for a brand new ship, so maybe my assumptions are wrong. Or maybe a cruise line with a sentimental streak would sell it to you for less to know their ship is being given a second life.
@HungryGuyStories4 жыл бұрын
@@JWH-01 But if I could buy one, I wouldn't keep it as a yacht all to myself. I'd run it as a cruise ship. I'd have a real apartment built on the top deck to live in full time, while booking the staterooms to passengers and offer cruises around the world.
@JWH-014 жыл бұрын
@@HungryGuyStories I have been pondering a lot about the future of cruising. I think it will be a lot more expensive than before. If they are going to run with fewer people to keep it safe, then they will be forced to raise prices to keep the ships profitable. It will still have similar cost to run the ship even though the food and house keeping costs may go down. If you could get a smaller ship, then run it at an even lower capacity. Perhaps you could modify the staterooms to be more luxurious and market it as an upper end cruise. I have no idea if there is any demand for that. I would think the cruise lines would be doing that if there were a demand.
@HungryGuyStories4 жыл бұрын
@@JWH-01 Yes, that's exactly my thoughts! I love the smaller ships, too. The newer ships just feel like you're in a big hotel. Run it as an upscale cruise line with one ship. Just keep sailing around the world. Let people get on and off at any port (like MSC does on some of its ships). I think there's plenty of demand from people who are afraid to fly who would love to be able to take a ship as an actual form of transport from their home port to their destination, one way or round trip, stay there, then sail back home at a later time.
