Driving the Ultimate Movie car - Mad Max 'Last of the V8 Interceptors'. The movie franchise of MadMax turning 45 this year, and bringing with it another film - Furiosa - Jonny Smith celebrates this Australian ultimate car and motorcycle movie that launched the career of Mel Gibson. Is this the original movie car? No, although that did live in the UK for many years. This is an almost perfect replica built by owner Mark Simpson in his sleepy Somerset village near Glastonbury.

The Toyota 4A-GZE & 1GZ-GTE (edit: 1G-GZE) motor used an electro-magnetic clutch similar to an air conditioning compressor to disengage the supercharger at idle to keep fuel consumption down. Presumably, one could make that operation switchable via gear stick mounted button

Does an engine that has a belt driven supercharger still work if you temporarily disconnected/removed the belt? Is there enough manifold vacumm to turn the two compressor gears/scrolls inside the blower and simultaneously also suck fuel from the carburettor sitting on top of the supercharger??

As a young fella, I delivered the local paper in an industrial area of Melbourne called West Heidelberg. One of the places was a machine shop and one evening the bloke who owned it was there and we had a bit of a chat about the lathes, mills etc. The conversation came round to how he built the supercharger for the Mad Max car. It was based on a supercharger he had fished out of a bin at the Calder Park drags after it had cracked its compressor thingy. He said he welded up the crack, just so it couldn't be seen, not a "repair weld", and worked out some sort of pulley setup to run it off the back of the engine. I was 16 at the time and VERY impressed.

The S/C was powered by a starter motor in the film car. A friend of my parents in the 80's painted a replica of the 4 door which is now passed off as a real movie car. All the police bits were obtained via Ch10 props dept as the owner of it, was Marty Monster on Ch10! From memory the rear spoilers on these cars are from Holden Sandman's

Just wanted to say as a 19 year old who loves cars, I have definitely seen Mad Max (on multiple occasions), and have to say its one of the best car/motorcycle films ever made, and definitely influenced my love of cars. Better than any of the modern Fast and furious crap they come up with. Real people doing actual crazy shit with vehicles for our entertainment will always be better than CGI. Thanks for the video

If you love the Falcon Hardtops maybe look at some of the footage when they were racing at Bathurst. Some such as the Allan Moffat versions are pretty legendary. Still one of my favourite vehicles from that era but the Toranas and Chargers were equally cool imo.

That was a great line of dialog......another scene that's memorable is when Toecutter says mocks her with "Jessie, Jessie, Jessie, you not got a sense of humor......." kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnasc4qXq8hlesk My Dad had a Ford Landau which was the luxury version of the Ford Hardtop, metallic bronze, 351, t-bar, leather seats..the Landaus were loaded with every extra including unique hubcaps, LSD, 4 wheel discs, etc....As a 20 year old, I used to borrow it occasionally and by today's standard it probably would be considered slow off the line, but back then it was a powerful car and the rear end used to let loose easily...but it was really a car that was suited to covering long distances at high speeds...it drove beautifully at 70 or 80mph on Aussie country roads, it just ate up the road. This car was only a few years old then and was in perfect condition...not a scratch on it, not a rattle, the engine pulled hard. One day my Dad was driving it, saw some smoke coming from under the bonnet as he pulled up at a red light. He said he had enough time to grab his wallet and pull the sheepskin seat covers off before it was fully engulfed in flames and it burnt to the ground....such a sad day, he loved that car.

We used to pick these up for 2 cartons of beer back in the late 1990's. My Dad picked up an XB Hardtop that had rare options- 351, Toploader, 4W discs, big tank, sunroof, aircon & few extras; $800. I had a Kermit green XC sedan Falcon 500; 250ci with auto & factory 9" diff, paid $300 and another $50 for a rebuildable 351ci; sold it for an ex polce 351ci single rail sedan that we made up a switchable blower kit (Dellow automotive sold them; was basically an aircon pump electromagnetic clutch with a carby setup for +ve blowthrough charge). Now you cant really find a nice shell for less than 10k! That rear steer you mentioned: we lowered the arse until the chassis levelled out, and often modified a rear swaybar to help keep the diff aligned & in place (we would used KE70 Corolla swaybars, even later Commodore swaybars- depended what the wreckers had at the time), as yeah- they would "tramline" bad

The XA through XC coupes were called "hardtops"because there was no structural B pillar at the door's shutline, meaning that the roof structure, door openings and sills had to be reinforced, to prevent the entire monocoque flexing or bending. The Americans, especially, had been building two door or four door pillarless coupes for decades by the time the Australians emulated the trend with the Falcon Coupe, Holden Monaro and Valiant Charger; all great cars in their own right.

Jonny when this movie came out me and my mates drove to one of the city cinemas in Adelaide (Jetty rd Glenelg), we all lied about our ages as we were 16-17. One of my mates put a fictitious suburb on the declaration form we had to fill out and had to sit out in the foyer and wait for us while we went in as teenagers to watch the most amazing movie I’d ever seen. Thank you for your passion to a cultural icon. This movie changed cinema globally. It was gloves off for action movies from then on. 👍

Yup. I had a black Opel Manta GT/E which was a close I could get to the look of the Falcon XB. Had a very similar front albeit with 4 vents. Obviously it lacked the massive V8 and sounds.

This was well timed, I needed cheering up. I have such a fondness for both Mad Max 1 and 2, being the first films I ever saw on videotape when my parents first got a VCR in around 1983. It had such a visceral effect on me, I've always wanted a pursuit special; my <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="84">1:24</a> scale diecast model will have to do. "See you on the road, skag." What a cracking video Jonny, I saw "Mad Max" at the cinema as an older teenager and it completely blew me away. I didn't realise at the time that it was shot on a small budget as it certainly didn't look like it so that shows haw well the direction and editing was done along with the stunts that I guess in a lot of cases were one shot shots if you get my drift. Oddly I knew a little about superchargers and turbo's back then and thought the red actuator actually engaged a gear or clutch to allow the supercharger to spin off the engine as we know that fuel was a pricy commodity that ran through the films. An always on supercharger would drink more fuel. Anyway less of my waffle. Mark has done a stunning job creating this car, and what a wonderful job he's made of it. Anyway as I was a skint teenager at the time I bought a motorbike and joined a bike club. They were good times back then but far from the safest.

These movies had a profound impact on me as a youth, as well. I remember absolutely loving the "on demand" supercharger. I spent hours in my room recreating the vehicles of The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome out of Lego. What a fun video!

I remember Mad Max premiered in November 1982 here in Sweden. I was 12 at the time and i went to the cinema and say the movie with my dad. My dad was very much into cars and motorbikes and i've inherited that from my dad. And yeah, this was such a scary movie back then but oh so good! Thanks Jonny Smith, this surely is awesome..!!!

I met a guy at a local car show in California who built a replica by himself. He said the car is pretty much accurate, "except the supercharger is real". Of course on his car the plunger button was not working as the supercharger always runs. Thanks for the great video!

The bodykit is an Arcadipane Concorde, people used them on every version of the XA, XB, & XC Falcons as they thought it would reduce fuel consumption. There's another famous Falcon Hardtop with the Concorde kit called the October Car, and its white with red, and, blue stripes.

Mark is a legend. Amazing build. If I were to attempt this myself, I would probably aim for the 600 horsepower claimed in the film, and have a real blower (obviously not connected to the pull switch). Another great movie car I would recreate if I had more money than sense - The Car. Easily the most terrifying thing on wheels in the 70's. Edit: from reading other comments, apparently the on/off switch is possible!

Eric Bana, yeah the Aussie Actor has one of these with 600hp, it was his dad's car and he just keep on improving it. It was a handfull and sadly he wrote it off in a Tarmac Rally.. There is a great doco about it called Love the Beast..

There is a company in the United States which imports XB shells, builds them into the Last V8's and the client has the option to make the supercharger fully functional.

You absolutely can switch a supercharger on and off, my AMG CLS55 does exactly that, as standard from the factory, via an electromagnetic clutch, controlled via the EMS

There is at least two of these in the UK, the other is registered KAJ 104N. The owner at the time supposedly spent over £100,000 building it and it was used for promotion of Mad Max: Fury Road. I saw it in 2017 at a show in Cumbria.

Loved this episode Jonny, that film had a massive impact on me too. As a kid I remember seeing what I think was probably a Mk3 Ford Cortina that was painted up to "resemble" the Pursuit cars parked in a side road off the A5 around the Atherstone area in the early/mid 80's. After seeing the comment from the guy who worked for Walkers Crisps about his colleague who had the Capri it brought that memory back. Wonder if it was the same person? I live in area that most of Mad Max was filmed, a lot has changed but a lot is also recognisable. The vaulted basement where the interceptor is unveiled on the movie is a carpark at my wife's work, the halls of justice is one of my favourite places to visit, not because of the movie, but it's an old pumping station and still has the 3 story high Steam pump engines that still rotate under electric power for demonstrations The one thing I don't have, is a car like that, what an incredible job. World class!

Johnny, I hate to correct you, as you are usually correct, but… You absolutely CAN stop and start a supercharger! My 2005 Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG does just that. And I’m sure there are many other examples. It requires an electric clutch, just like an air conditioner compressor. Also a bypass for the supercharger when it’s switched off, so the supercharger doesn’t block the intake when it’s stationary. What a great project… But I would have had the operational supercharger WITH electric clutch… As that was the whole idea of the concept…I’m sure that what George Miller and Byron Kennedy (the writers) had in mind in the original screenplay. 😊

I just watched another KZbin video of a bloke in America that did the exact same thing. Imported a 72 Falcon wreck and then spent $100k to build an Interceptor. So at the very least there must be now 2 replicas and presumably the original is still floating around somewhere too. For a petrol head like me that movie hit the mark on all level that mattered. Still love it to this day. Funny story, when I watched this movie in 79 I had no idea that I would immigrate to Australia exactly 10 years later. Been here ever since, true blue Aussi now mate :)

The " switch " for the supercharger is a button that was used on old trucks. It was for changing the ratio in the diff. They were very common in their time. Because horsepower wasn't big back then, they had 4 or 5 speed gearboxes and 2 speed diffs. American trucks didn't normally have them. They went for 2 gearboxes and 2 gear sticks. Bloody terrible things if you tried to change the diff quickly 😄

100% agree about Mad Max as a film and even today, every now and again I will watch it even though I have seen it so many times before. It's such a raw film. Also, a big shout out for Aussie cars in general. I used to own a Chrysler Valiant Charger that I absolutely loved and still miss to this day. Both Aussie cars and South African cars are so often overlooked but so often great cars. Usually due to 8 cylinders.

Nice one. They're called hardtops because of no B pillar, but the younger crowd here in Oz call them coupes. I recall seeing a very rough looking XA hardtop in London (Ealing) way back in 1985 and apparently they imported a few when new, so you might still find a rusty one over there today.

Tell the owner he NEEDS to add the sound with a speaker in the empty super case that can be activated as soon as the electric motor is engaged to spin it...that would just make it absolutely perfect

Epic!! Was thinking about one of these just the other day. Trick is getting the blower to work properly. Best to ignore switching on/off and just build a blown motor! What a fantastic beast! Great build and thanks for the wonderful video Jonny!

Fun fact the car used in Fury Road was bought in the late 1990s and filming stared in mid 2001 but stopped due to 9/11... so the MM films have a long history(there was a prequal also made in the mid 70`s) and the car(destroyed in MM2) is in a privet collection....

I Remember seeing this movie in 1979 when it first came out in Puerto Rico, I was 16 years old at the time! And I was hooked on the whole movie! But the car and Mel Gibson took the movie to another level! Definitely a cult classic, and one of my favorite!👌😎👍

The scene where the interceptor goes through the caravan was filmed in North Laverton in the western suburbs of Victoria . Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons we would go there for illegal drags . The road was called Cherry Lane and the cops would block of both ends to trap people in so they could do roadworthy checks on your car to defect them 😂.🇦🇺 Cheers

Smiled all the way through this. Loved the mad max films. It was because of this film that I am a bit of an apocalyptic / post apocalyptic film fan. One of my fav movie cars this is too. Had a model of it as a kid and broke the front end off it to make it look like it had been crashed like the car in mad max 2. Great work Johnny and to the man who built it.

It was the last of the V8 interceptors called the Pursuit Special Think Ford Mustang /Ford Mustang Boss 302 Now I don't know any movie canon, but one would expect the 'interceptors' were either the standard police car or specifically used for chases

I’m not up on canon either. But it’s my understanding that the car would have been a impound or confiscated vehicle from the bad guys. A standard xB with 351c. The boys in the shop took a few bits from here.. and there. 😂 and over time built this special vehicle for their buddy Max. It was a custom police interceptor. It’s kinda obvious. 🎉

Muscle cars are just all passion. I think that's why everyone loves them. Even though they are wrong in every conceivable way. They're so expensive to buy and to drive and insure. But, the sound and the way they make you feel when you pull away from the lights(tires squealing) make them worth every speeding ticket.

There are superchargers that have clutches and can be turned off and on... I always hated the fact that people said it was not possible... With the right supercharger it's quite possible to build a car that is only supercharged when you... "press the button"... if you really wanted to. It's just not sensible at the end of the day.... although Toyota did it.... the button turning on the supercharger just added to the movie drama of the V8.

To be fair a supercharger could technically be engaged separately from the engine much in the same way an A/C compressor can. Use of electomagnet and a clutch pulley would make it possible. The issue would be setting the engine up to run properly with/without the induction from the charger, though I guess this could be achieved by a switchable map stand alone ECU.

Mercedes Benz had the late 90's SLK Kompressor model with a supercharged 4 cylinder. The SC would only run if you pushed the gas pedal down all the way.

Amazingly Vincent Gil (Nightrider) couldn't drive a motorcar in real life, there was actually a bloke squashed down in the front of the stolen MFP 'Pursuit Special' doing the driving, still dunno how they did that.

Im in Tasmania. Seeing that interior, I can still feel the glove box button, the feel of the seats, and when i sat behind the wheel (5 year old) that wrap around dash board with big red lights and the walking stick pull type hand brake. It just all comes back to me now. For reference, when i was a kid you would see 4 or 5 of these in the traffic about you on a 5 minute drive to school, they were that poppular. All different colours of course. And the same with the night rider's stolen Monaro coupe. The four door versions of both were everywhere because they were taxis and cop cars. Thanx for this video, for me melancholic but sweet

Actually, you can stop and start a Supercharger. Toyota had S/C's with an electronicially controlled clutch (I think similar to an A/C Compressor) back in the 80's on the 1G-GZE and 4A-GZE. I don't know if anyone else did this, I'm just an old Toyota nerd. I think SC12 and SC14 were the designations for the chargers.

I am a big Mad Max fan - in 1993 I visited Silvertown in Oz, drove around the corner where the tanker tipped over and incredibly, there was a sort old car salvage yard with some of the actual movie vehicles abandoned there. Somewhere I have photos…

One of my step daughters came home one day and said she had just been at the Tocutters hoise , as her friends dad had worked on all the mad max movies and was friends with them

I remember watching this when it was released with my mates. After watching, we left the cinema on the last of the unrestricted, 'Pedal Powered' 50's (FSIEs and AP 50s) Some of us hit 45mph on our way home (downhill, of course).

Amazing video - what a replica !!!! As a lifelong MM fan I went to Cars of the Stars in Keswick as 20year old maybe in 2004/5. I sat in the car . The man who owned it was really friendly and obliging after travelling up by train he had shut for lunch or no one was visiting and he’d shut but he let me in alone -. He let me take photos which I don’t know where they are now. There was stuff in the car from Road warrior I instantly recognised . Dinki di cans , the chair dog sits in was attached to the door . I was blown away. Whether or not they were original props from RW I can’t say for definite

Great episode. Mark has done a fabulous job rebuilding this car to the level he has got it. I sourced and shipped the XB hardtop to him along with the body kit, wheels and some other parts, to see how good the car has come up from the neglected rolling shell that I shipped over is fantastic. Lovely bloke as well. :)
