Little fun fact; the music played while Anna is begging Marlene to kill her and when we see Joel driving across the landscapes of Wyoming was the music that was in the opening of Part 2 when Joel rode into Jackson with Tommy.

I stand by Joel. They gave a traumatized man defined by the loss of his little girl the job of protecting a little girl. A job that would take almost a year and hardships and fight for survival and time for bonding. They wanted the job done and done well but didn't consider Joel at all and how he would feel and what he would do. (Well they 'gon learn today lol) But yes, Ellie should have been made fully aware of what her surgery would entail but let's face it, the fireflies were going to do it to her anyway. They would have restrained her and put her under regardless. They didn't even want to deal with that so they either lied to her and said she'd be fine or they ignored the whole thing entirely. Ellie and Joel kept talking about "after this" as if she was going to have a full life with the thought of saving the world and then getting to do the other things she wanted to do in life. All her wonder and curiosity and drive for trying new things. Their promises of him singing for her and teaching her guitar ..her want of going to the moon (even if highly absurd or unlikely) That sparkle in her eyes and smile as she pet the giraffe, showing him that childlike wonder and a future of promise and possibly some good things that can be in her life not just struggle. How heartbreaking for Joel to think she'd never have a life of her own to grow ..just like Sarah. For Ellie. She was harboring the pain of those who died because of infected. She hates the infection and so she wanted to do her part in eradicating it so no one has to lose others to it any more like she did. But she should have been told. The best thing to do would have been to have them both awake and have it discussed so Ellie could have made her choice in front of him. He would have to accept her choice then and though he'd grieve, he would have witnessed her choice. But again...the fireflies were never going to let it be a choice for her. Joel would have accepted a choice, Marlene would not have. So ...I stand by Joel.

This comment is amazing, breathtaking honestly. Your choice of words, what you say here, it's all so lovely, it honestly left me a little breathless. You truly have a way with words. As a writer, I wish I had half of your talents. And what you said about Joel and Ellie in the beginning, about how stupid the fireflies were in giving Ellie to the man who lost his daughter and how long and far they'd be traveling together and how they would bond and it is honestly my favorite comment from these Last of Us videos. I hope that other people acknowledge how amazing this comment and your words are.

@@marymartin2154 I have never been so honored in a comment section. Thank you SO much for this. I felt passionate about this moment in the game/show. I feel that it is the moment where people might be divided(even amongst their own feelings) about if this was right or wrong, betrayal or loyalty. For me, when I took a moment and reflected on the whole story from breakfast table to operating table, I just know I don't persecute Joel. The fireflies put him in the Worst position imaginable. I too, am a writer (as a hobby) and my favorite parts about it are characters, their development, backstory and arc. Once again, thank you for giving me the best compliment I have had in a comment section in all my years online. ❤️

I agree and my biggest issue is that Marlene and the Fireflies were still guessing. She is the only person ever immune and instead of starting off small with blood tests, swabs, etc. they go straight to "kill her and dissect her brain." If they end up being wrong, they just killed their only shot. Joel did the right thing.

I haven't played the game, but Joel taking out the entire hospital was chilling! You totally understand his motivations, even if you don't personally agree. Erik Voss brought up a great point that even if they had gotten the chemical markers from Ellie and used them to inoculate people, the infected would still be ravaging the planet. All the infected still try to attack Ellie, so they can't tell she's the fungus, or they wouldn't bother. The same would probably be true for anyone they inoculated with the chemical markers. New people may not get infected from being bitten anymore, but they'd still get killed by clickers and bloaters. Everyone would still be trapped in the QZs and the like. Until they find a way to kill/cure ALL of the infected as well as inoculate regular people, the world will be mostly the same. Joel saving Ellie at the expense of the world doesn't seem as awful when you look at it that way.
@lunacouer

Wow, that's actually a great point. They're barking up the wrong scientific tree. You just made me realize it'd probably be easier to develop an anti-fungal herbicide like they use on crops than find a vaccine if you're bitten. Just mow 'em down with Round Up Extra Strength 😂
@Stoney_17
@Stoney_17 10 ай бұрын
It’s something that gets overlooked a lot in these discussions on the morality of the situation. Also, how on earth would they distribute such an inoculation across the globe? They don’t have the infrastructure to do something as large scale as that. Add on top I would also ask how would you convince people that it’s real and works? Because you see what it took for Joel to finally believe that she was immune. How are you going to convince strangers who aren’t trusting to outsiders that you have the cure if they would just let you inject you with an unknown substance?

I think what makes the ending hit so differently in live action is that we're third-party observers, so we get a more objective view of the character of Joel than when we're actually playing as Joel. The entire game builds us up so that we, like Joel, love Ellie fiercely and would do anything to keep her safe. The Firefly Massacre was the inevitable conclusion from that point of view, but now that we've gone through the story from a different one, it's easier to see the ending for what it really is: exquisite tragedy. The music is the same, the beats are the same, but shortening the sequence and really focusing on the wake of death Joel leaves behind him is key. Add in the lingering shot on the dead doctor at the end and I'd say they've set us up perfectly to flow into the events of Part II. Also, Bella and Pedro deserve ALL the awards, as do the crew. This was such an amazingly faithful and loving recreation of the game and I can't imagine how they could have done better. ❤

One thing I had an issue with when I first played the game was that it was implied that Marlene had looked over Ellie her entire life. That there was a bond there. Ellie was Marlene's BEST FRIEND'S child. And the reason why it resonated so much with me was that I raised my best friend's son with her. He's my son just as much as he is hers. And I couldn't phantom just handing him over and be like 'here, kill him', even if it was to save humanity. When I'm in the dark, he is the light I look for. He has been the love of my life and if I would have to willingly kill him to save humanity, then f*ck humanity . THAT BEING SAID, however, I told myself I wouldn't be able to do what Joel did, because the life of every single one of these people he killed was worth just as much as my son's life. They had a life, they were loved by someone, someone was going to mourn them just as much as Joel mourned Sarah. So I wrestled with the fact that I would probably not be able to kill all those people to save just one life. That was when I played the game back in 2016. And then, in 2020, he got sick. Right before Covid happened, we learned he had cancer. My son was then a 26 year old man, not a child anymore, but I would have done anything, went anywhere, killed any m*therfucker that stood in my way (to quote Bill) if doing so would've saved his life. Luckily, he responded to treatment, and he is still with me, he's my 6'1, 300 pounds baby boy. But still, when the doctor told us he had cancer, in that moment, that scary, terrifying, completely overwhelming and yet numbing second of understanding that I might lose him, I would've done anything to save him. Whatever it took, even at the price of my soul.

In the last of us pt.1, you can find a voice recording from the doctor saying that there were others like her that are immune but it didn’t work although she was different they still were rushing to get it done now instead of running more tests to make sure it’s all in the clear and they also didn’t tell Ellie because they probably don’t want her to say No because then they would have to force her. Even though there is a chance it could’ve work, it’s a small chance and the world is too far gone to fix when you consider what kind of people are out there besides the good people who are trying to survive. Joel may have done a selfish thing and lied but I mean if the “cure” didn’t work, Ellie would’ve died for nothing, thinking she was saving the world.

It absolutely makes no sense from a scientific point of view. I could go on a huge rant about vaccinating against fungi being bs, or about how her brain barrier being tougher than other people's being genetic, so a drop of her blood would work just as well as a tiny sliver of the protective layer of the brain or a freaking cheek swab, or about the "scientists" being nearly mrainless borons who failed high school biology... I could give long, extensive explanations. Entire 1.5 h lectures for each problem with the science of killing Ellie for the cure and how it's the exact opposite of what should be done... This is the short version. What Joel did there? It's the only chance humanity has, unless there are others with the same resistance. The tiny chance they one day meet a competent scientist. Knowing the second game... That's not what ends up happening.

I think Joel is clearly right at the end. Anyone who thinks there's any reason or justification for killing a child, is wrong. There's no other side. Keep in mind this is me analyzing the show as someone who did not play the game I don't think Ellie was in the right headspace for any kind of informed consent. Freshly traumatized on a whole new level with some serious survivor's guilt. Beyond that, informed consent is impossible when you know they would make it sound like this was guaranteed to work--anything to get her to agree. Plus, we know they wouldn't have allowed her to talk to Joel first regardless due to that adding to the possibility she wouldn't agree to die, even without taking into account the fresh knowledge of how important she is to Joel. Joel would not have flinched again, that's for damn sure. As it was, the muted sounds are similar to the effect used for Joel's panic attacks and I believe the flashback to Sarah being shot in the first episode right before he killed that solider about to kill Ellie. More PTSD dissociation than a panic attack, but with the singular goal of saving the only daughter he has left. Joel is much more aligned with Anna than Marlene. Ellie was never a daughter to Marlene and so while Marlene does not want to kill her, it's not on the same level. Still, the doctor's plan was anything but certain, and we know it is such a minuscule chance anyway because of what the very beginning of the show stressed: "There are no treatments for this; no preventatives; no cures. They don't exist--it's not even possible to make them." Besides, that dude is a surgeon, not a scientist. This is not his specialty or even the same field. If they had the resources hospitals did prior to outbreak it could be more feasible, but they don't have even close to that. There's also the fact that there's not much of a world to save at this point. Most of the people left are raiders, slavers, the David's, the Kathleen's...even Fedra and the Fireflies are people who were either awful people to begin with or lost (most of) their humanity from what was done when surviving by any means necessary. The world has always been broken; there just isn't much good to compensate for it by now. All this to say, Joel didn't doom the world by refusing to lose Ellie--the world was doomed on outbreak day. Joel's true mistake was that he shouldn't have lied and then doubled down on that lie.
@Tensen01

Yeah there is absolutely no way the world is coming back from this. Also, what about the rest of the world? What's their plan there? The Fireflies have a savior complex despite obviously being under-equipped to be in control of a single QZ, let alone the cure.

Him lying to Ellie... not cool. The way the episode just ended...WHAT?! I went that's it?!! Grrr. On the positive side, their relationship blossomed so well throughout the season. Also, I had no idea that Ashley was the voice of Ellie in the game. I agree with all of this. Maybe in the game, with the voice memos, you heard more about how they figured it out and that she really was the key and this was the only way. But I didn't play the game, so with the information we were presented with, them trying to kill Ellie two seconds after she got there was bloodthirsty desperation for just the dumbest reasons. I was like "Not even gonna try a spinal tap for those 'chemical messengers' there, surgeon-who-isn't-a-scientist?" Knowing what and even how to look for what they need, how to extract it _and_ how to synthesize it? Yeah, totally above his paygrade. And them not telling her, not giving her a choice, not letting her at least talk to Joel, tells me they knew she might say no. So what did they do instead? Exactly what David did...they took away her consent. They can frame it as kindness with that "Oh we didn't want to scare her" bs all they want, but if they were worried she'd be scared, it's because they were worried she wouldn't want to go through with it. This part of the moral quandary could've been avoided if they'd all just sat down and had a conversation. Woulda had a whole new one depending on what she said, but it was plain wrong to take away her consent on this.

Ok so theres no way in this world that Marlene would've had her hair all did like this. I feel like black women would've just shaved their shit or had it very natural. Marlene's hair is worked

I mean, I can't really pretend there is some moral high ground I would take in their scenario. Marlene could have at least allowed Ellie and Joel to speak. But... did Joel really need to kill everyone? I can see four men he didn't have to kill and could have at least knocked out, especially with his skills. It's tough, but that's what makes it such a good story.

That Wouldn't Of Worked, Joel Knew They Would Come After Them So Joel Had To Finish Them Off Completely, The Fireflies Started This Whole Mess, As Of This Point They Didn't Even Treat Joel & Ellie Like Real People, After Everything Joel & Ellie Had Been Through He's Not Taking Any Chances For Them To Come After Them, The Fireflies Assaulted Joel & Ellie First, Marlene Could've Done A Better Job, Why Ambush Someone Outside Without Talking 🤷 But Nobody Wants To Talk About That All People Are Talking About Is What Joel Did & How Wrong It Was

In my, outside, opinion Joel did the wrong thing, but I do not judge him for it because I understand that after all the trauma he went through he would choose to save her, but I think it was a selfish act, he did it because HE could not lose another daughter and later he lies because he knows that Ellie would've sacrifissed herself for a potential cure, and he realizes that when Marlene said that. And well, there'll be consequences... But I still love him, but he's not a saint.
