That said, entirely "break me" moments and entire arcs were throughout the game and part 2. They don't flood it, but they fill it out amazingly. I had been playing games since .. the 90s, but this one, select others countable on one hand, had the effect of entirely changing the way I saw the storytelling, life lesson teaching, etc potential of games, through seeing things done so incredibly well. RDR2 is a close one, favorite wise, but when looking at things in the perspective I mentioned, didn't make the list for ex.

@@chipsalom it really is the best storytelling I've ever seen in any medium. I love seeing the reactions of people who never played them, because aside from the debate over what's right or wrong I'm seeing a lot of "What am I supposed to do now?" and "This changed me." which is exactly the impact when you play it. These games became a part of me like nothing else I've ever experienced, and I'm so glad people who don't game or don't like that type of game finally get to experience it.

@@marcoantonioaguirrehernand4375 Low key I have waited for this because I'm dying to see how it's done on-screen because this had some of the most iconic set pieces and the story was just hard. But if they can make Bill and Frank so beautiful on screen I have absurdly high hopes for Sam and Henry. They showed a bit in the trailer already. SPOILER>>>> This is where the gameplay did storytelling work. When you get separated and Joel is protecting Sam and Henry is protecting Ellie, that feels soooooo heavy in the game. I wonder how they play it in the show? That is just a storytelling device that doesn't translate directly to TV with the same emotional impact. So I wonder if Sam and Henry get a short backstory before the main plot progresses.

Frank’s line, “Im not gonna give you the ‘everyday was a gift from god speech, ive had a lot of bad days. Ive had bad days with you too.” That line got me. Beautiful acting from Murray. Reminds me of my grandparents who are in the same nursing home right now, but separate rooms. Separate rooms. When just a few weeks ago they were having breakfast together. Stories my grandmother told me of how my grandfather used to beat her, and of his short temper when he was younger. And how he had changed so much as he got older, and how patient and kind he is now. If one of them were to die tomorrow, would the other one know?

This was so sweet to watch. I felt every emotion you did and I have to chime in as a gamer. When you asked or stated “This is from a video game?” It’s inspired by the video game. At times you’ll have moments directly lifted from the game itself. This episode greatly differs from the game. I don’t wish to spoil you unless you want to know more but the Bill you met here is not the same man in the games. I believe this is what could have been Bill’s story if the world wasn’t as dark as it is. (In the game) This was such a beautiful story and I’m really glad they were able to flesh out and give these characters such a wonderful experience for them and us.

Basically put the game has 3 playable characters. Sarah, Joel and Ellie. The storytelling never departes from any of them. So whenever you see a scene were none of them are participating, that was added for the TV-Show alone. The sidecharacter's stories like Bill's and Frank's are told through letters you can pick up. In this particular case they deviated quite a bit, because in the game Bill is still alive when Joel and Ellie get to his place. But Frank isn't. He killed himself after being bitten. A fact that Bill is unaware off. He thinks Frank left him and ran away. And he is bitter about it.

On Ellie’s fascination with guns. Keep in mind that not only has she grown up in the apocalypse, but she has already had an infected fungus monster try and kill her in a brutally vicious attack. Anyone having gone through that kind of trauma is going to be thinking they want a way to defend themselves from the world, especially a world full infected fungus monsters. And as for the killing the trapped infected, I imagine it’s hard to be empathetic to a monster that has brutally killed everyone you’ve ever cared about, and tried to kill you more than once. And she is only 14, she has a lot of growing up to do yet. Loving your reactions, can’t wait to see more!!

I know I’m very late, but I also want to add: It’s lightly implied that Ellie had to kill Riley once she became infected, and probably is left wondering if she killed her best friend, or if her best friend was already dead and she has nothing to worry about. I also think the anger might have come from that moment as well. Infected took her best friend away, and she’s getting a form of empty vengeance (which light spoilers for part 2: that’s like Ellie’s whole thing.)

Come into the video game world, friend! There are a lot of magical stories! This part is very different from the game, but I think this tv version fits into the Last of Us universe too. It still feels very last of us part 1-> a kind of beautiful but tragic treatise on love. Regarding Ellie's "weird" interest in guns, she was raised in a military school that taught might makes right. She's probably been taught the only way to stay safe is to have a weapon on her. Her knife wasn't enough to keep her from being bit. All of this confusing change, it makes sense she'd want to be more armed. Then she basically defeated death by not becoming infected. It makes sense she would be weirdly obsessed with death and the infected.
@KillaKay928
@KillaKay928 Жыл бұрын
I personally think its less of an obsession and more of a morbid curiosity mixed with maybe some hatred for the infected given her back story (the back story in which we have not seen yet). I think people that are new to the story are being intentionally confused and worried by the writers and directors. I could be wrong, but just my suspensions so far. P.s. I know the whole story from both games. The show just has many twists and deviations so now I'm like theory crafting on what they might be going towards or how they will deviate next.

It's not just that she is interested in Guns. The Way she watched Joel beat a man to death, her constant questions that basically revolve around "You killed people, how did it feel?" and now that weird encounter. I completely lost it when Frank told Bill, “Then love me the way I want you to.” Then they hit you with the piece of music “On the Nature of Daylight”😢 during their last day🎨🍂🍁🌸, which is also found in one of my favorite movies “Arrival” by Denis Villeneuve(I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it 👍). Bill to Frank “I was never afraid before you showed up.” & “I’m old, I’m satisfied, and you were my purpose.” Frank to Bill “Paying attention to things, it's how we show love." 😭 The letter Bill leaves telling Joel what his purpose is, thus showing him the way forward. And of course the Linda Ronstadt Long, Long Time call back at the final scene for all the feels again. 🪟❤️ Almost forgot, strawberries for the win 🍓 I’m looking forward to watching your reaction to this when I get home tonight. 😊👍

I'm not a gamer. I've watched others play TLOU but never came across Bill and Frank's story. This was outstanding. Even the small portions of just Ellie and Joel. Great performances here. Broke down hearing Frank's wish list. Broke down again seeing them enjoy their "first meal together" again. We didn't need to see what became of them. They died the way they wanted to. Together. Great video, see you next week. Take care, Angela!!

It's funny how you mention digging a hole in your backyard hoping a Frank will fall in because this episode makes me want to be more like Frank. For a long time I felt like I've just been surviving and it's not even the apocalypse. But this episode reminded how important it is to live. To seek out connections even if it's scary. Be protective like Bill. Be open hearted like Frank. Be brave, willing to fall into that hole and hopefully someone will eventually show up with a ladder.

I watched this episode earlier today and then took my dog for a walk. I had tears streaming down my face the entire time. Not crying, but empathizing with love and loss and how beautiful life can be when you allow someone into your space it feels as though you are making yourself vulnerable, and you are, yet it is sincerely the only way to *live* rather than just live. I've loved this show and I hope the there is a need for more tears caused by a cathartic response to love and loss.

There are some amazing lines in this episode. The part about growing old faster than you, the “getting old means we’re still here” or whatever it was, the “love me the way I want you to,” the “I’m old, I’m satisfied, and you were my purpose,” “but I was wrong because there was one person worth saving, and that’s what I did”- so many amazing lines. (I mean the whole show, many of which were directly from the game script)

That’s deliberate, and necessary. In the game, Joel is the character the players inhabit, and has to be a virtually unkillable monster able to wade through hordes of infected. In the game, Joel can take multiple shots from handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and as long as the player can get to cover and use a bandage, he’ll recover. Trying to make the live action version of the character match that level of badassery would look absolutely ridiculous. He’s not the Terminator. He needs to be human, and vulnerable, to be relatable.

I think Ellie's "bloodlust" thing you touched on is very important, particularly when you consider how differently Sarah reacted to similar things. Regardless of whether it comes from life just being more brutal in those times, Ellie's not a typical 14-year-old as we know them. This seems to be laying a clever foundation for her character arc in the upcoming season(s).

So the relationship of Bill and Frank was hinted at in the game. Whether it was altered or cut only the creators know, but in the game, Joel and Ellie meet up with Bill who gives them supplies and the truck. It's been a while since I've played the game so I don't remember exactly but he either discussed having had a "person", but never naming them or I think there may have been a letter you could find by exploring. In any case this deeper dive was an amazing difference from the game and I think better suited for the live action adaption. One of the best executed pieces of television ever made.

This is completely different than how it played out in the game but given the change in medium this was a welcome change. Bill is doing his crazy survivalist stuff alone in the town when he saves you from infected. He is mentioned but you never see Frank alive in the game. He and Bill had a huge fight and you find his body across town looking for the truck battery with a note with a "I always hated you Bill "note and Bill is alive last you see him.

I would be wary about giving this level of detail when the reactor has not played the game. They may want to try it for themselves. While different, having seen the show, they might have a different sadder reaction to finding Frank knowing his relationship with Bill other than notes we find in game. At least put game spoiler on your comment

I cried so much at this episode, so beautifully written. And I felt so seen and respected with that beautiful relationship that was portrayed and so expertly written. This is one of the best examples of when to deviate from the source material. It’s such a touching and well-told love stories that it’s almost a short film in and of itself. Plus, I love how it informs and pushes the main plot. I think it gives Joel a renewed sense of purpose when he reads Bill’s letter. It’s like a part of him realizes what his role in the world is now, to protect others. He lost sight of that after Sarah, but it’s like he regains that focus after this episode.

Watching these reactions from you back to back and I absolutely love your expressions and as someone who has played the games several times, I really enjoy a fresh take on this show. II'm not gonna spoil anything, but keep a look out for subtle things as equipment or clothing, hint: Joel is wearing Frank's shirt when they leave to find Tommy. Bill and Frank's story wasn't told like this in the game, but it was hinted at through clues hidden in journals and notes. There's quite a few changes, but as a fan of the games, the changes makes sense when adapted into a TV-Show. The overall aesthetics and atmosphere are on point while the show follows the story of the video game.

in the game, there was always little hints that bil and frank are gay, but its never said, and we never see frank alive, only his unalive body hanging from the ceiling, joel also found a note from frank that was, well, bitter and not really nice! So they change quite a bit, and im happy about it, they showed that some characters can change and start living instead of just surviving, and i think the strawberry scene is the best exemple of that!
