IIRC they didn't 'discover' him until they put out a casting call on, like, Twitter or something. Apparently they'd been through dozens upon dozens of kids in trying to cast Sam but didn't find the right fit so they put out a call on social media and got maybe half a dozen replies, one of which was him. He's got a very bright career in acting ahead of him if he wants to pursue it, I reckon.

Joel yelling, "Henry, no" at the end shows how much Joel has come more than just inviting them to go with them to Wyoming. Ellie's whimper, such good acting. Sam was just a baby and Henry such a good kid, especially with being a product of 20 years of KC Fedra. I cry easily, but it's just usually my eye leaking - this had me sobbing.

did you notice how scared Joel got when the child clicker got in the car with Ellie? he literally started trembling, + the entire scene with him covering Ellie from the snipernest was an amazing showcase of Pedros ability to act through microexpressions, i was really impressed by the acting in this episode especially Bella and Pedros. one of my favourite slight changes from the game is how they let Ellie have lot more moments of being heartbreakingly childlike. My heart really hurts for tv Ellie to a degree that it didn't for her game counterpart

You're one of the most observant people I've seen watching this show. You immediately clocked that 1. The blood wouldn't work (something a lot of people naively hoped) and 2. Ellie thought it would (a lot of people thought she was just trying to comfort Sam). You also correctly figured out Ellie's motives for not telling the adults, she sincerely believed her blood would cure Sam and was afraid the adults wouldn't let her try. And of COURSE she believed that, she has no idea how science and medicine work. She's had a dogshit education that focused solely on brainwashing her into being a good little soldier to die for the cause. Even Ellie knows it was a bad education from her comments in episode 2. But she has been told she's a miracle and that a cure can be made from her blood... so of course she thinks she can cure Sam. Its just devastating. EDIT: THE FUCKING GAG OH MY GOD THE GAG GUYS WATCH TO THE END WHATEVER YOU DO WATCH TO THE END

I'm glad you appreciate my overanalyzing the show. I'm going to show this comment to my mom, who always got on my case for that. 😅 It's really just too bad Ellie's childlike optimism was stomped so hard. I worry about how much she just lost that isn't tangible.

On the subject of Ellie hardening as a character, what really stood out to me was how in that moment when they thought they were almost home free before the sniper starts firing, she gets that classic “kid rambling about something silly” tone of voice when talking about being able to convince Joel to do stuff and almost comes off as even younger than she really is. To let herself feel like she could really be a kid alongside her new friend, thinking they were now safe with two adults - and then by the next morning she’s right back to feeling like she’ll never get to be a kid again.

A really interesting parallel in this final scene, it mirrors the one from episode 2 after Tess died. Only it's Ellie walking ahead this time. About the blood, Marlene told her in episode 1 when she said not to repeat something to anyone or she would die. It's very possible that what followed was something to the effect of her blood being medicine, and that people would be desperate to get it. If Ellie took something like that at face value, it would make a lot of sense.
@reverseBLT
@reverseBLT Жыл бұрын
Good eye. I love when a creative team can create that kind of poetry, as a series plays out. Marlene saying that's entirely plausible, and it's natural, in any case, for Ellie not to understand what it does and doesn't mean to be immune. Given the state of the country, I doubt she has received much education in even basic biology, let alone something more complex. I'm certainly not judging her for her ignorance. It was just an extra layer of sadness, seeing her grasp onto that false hope.

So, after going through that heartache in the game I was convinced I'd be fine this episode because I knew what was coming. I'd like to learn more about the young blond actress they got to play the child clicker. Her part was very well choreographed. No apologies are needed for crying. I cried too. I'm sure most did. I needed time to compose my feelings as well. I think this world needs more people like us rather than people that don't have those reactions. Otherwise... we lose. That split-second yelp/scream Ellie did just as Henry shot himself, that is when I lost it. Bella deserves an award just for her performance in this episode alone, There were so many times I literally wanted to give her a hug and comfort her. yet still she has her little 'Ellie' attitude.
@reverseBLT
@reverseBLT Жыл бұрын
I saw some blurb in a newsfeed saying the actress for the child clicker had an absolutely terrifying audition tape. I haven't had a chance to check that out to see for myself, though. Crying is natural, and I'm constantly encouraged to see so many people agree. I hope our way of thinking becomes the norm, so we can finally stop demanding men damage themselves trying to deny their emotions in the name of appearing strong. What makes Bella's reaction there an even more impressive bit of acting is the fact that probably nothing at all happened. Most likely they called action for that shot and *maybe* made the gunshot sound and thud on set to help her time the reaction. She was almost certainly looking at nothing or at a production assistant or something.

In the game, the tunnels are indeed filled with infected and you actually get the story of what happened to the kids and their guardians in that little settlement. It's super sad. I guess the kid clicker in the show is basically the short way if saying what happened. 16:17 Awww I didn't even notice that! I was so busy geeking out over the tunnels looking EXACTLY like they do in the game. Ellie is the type of person who clings to others quickly. I HATE that Sam got infected and 'turned' for lack of a better term, but I love that his last moments as himself were filled with love, even if it was love from Ellie and not from his brother it was still love. You can't really ask for better than that at the end, can you? As for that big infected, they're called Bloaters and like you saw they DGAF about spreading the infection. That urge is pretty much gone by the time they're Clickers because even those ones are as likely to rip you apart as 'just' infect you. Also, the way the Bloater killed Perry - ripping the top of his head off from the jaw up - is an iconic death in the game so I love that they gave it to him, because he voiced Tommy in the game.

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken with hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. Spoiler Part 2 Game: Oh yes and btw we all hate Kathleen for what she does. She subordinates everything to her revenge. How do we know this? Part 2. There is a main character we all love does nothing else.

So some game easter eggs: Some levels were condensed in this episode. The tunnels they go through were a sewer system in the game they go through that a community had lived and had since abandoned. There's a whole storyline about the community that is revealed in letters found there. They end up in a similar neighborhood with a sniper that Joel steals the rifle from. There's then a whole sniper section. The big infected kills the bearded man (who played Tommy in the original game) the same way it will kill Joel in the game if it catches him by ripping his face off.

Bill and Frank set the emotional standards so high. The emotions here is not on par on those 2 but still this scene is still so sad and tragic. Episode 3 left a mark that is so deep.
@reverseBLT
@reverseBLT Жыл бұрын
Also, I think a part of us just expected something bad to happen to Henry and Sam, especially given the circumstances. Bill and Frank's story and its tragic end hit harder in part because it was unexpected, at least for those of us who hadn't played the games.
@miguelgalvez4546
@miguelgalvez4546 Жыл бұрын
@@reverseBLT Yeah and the situation of Bill and Frank is very relatable to most people, regardless of what gender and what kind of relationship we have. But sometimes i come think that Frank become a lil bit selfish there. And he gave up his life so easy, he could still live for another year or two, which makes Bill happier. But he decided to end his life not thinking what Bill will feel to be alone. That's why Bill also decided to take his own life with him even though for me he is not yet ready to die and still very capable.
@reverseBLT
@reverseBLT Жыл бұрын
I think Robin Williams said something about how one eventually gets to the point where they just can't endure anymore, after a long time of fighting so they won't hurt others with their suicides. I think Frank had already held on for Bill as long as he could. I will say, though, that I think part of him hoped Bill would make the grand gesture of dying with him. Another way these characters were superbly written. Real people have those little selfish, contradictory pieces within themselves. I'm sure he mostly wanted Bill to go on, to be happy, maybe even to find someone else. But a tiny piece wanted their story to end at the same time, to keep Bill only to himself, to say if he couldn't have Bill, no one could. On balance, it doesn't make Frank selfish or bad, only human.

For me, a spoiler would be for a plot point that either hasn't happened yet in the show, or that happens significantly differently in-game, including things like decisions made, events that happen or don't, characters who do or don't exist, that sort of stuff. I don't mind knowing about things related entirely to gameplay, or small differences in personalities, dialogue, or characterization.

Spoilers for the game In the game the whole swarm of Clickers was NOT what happened. When Joel kills the Sniper in the game, it's a very small horde of maybe...12 infected? They weren't even clickers. When (in the game its a different faction, I'm not sure which, I think the Hunters) the hunters appear and chase down Sam, Ellie and Henry. Joel shots a guy that was about to throw a Molotov and that blows up the building. But no horde comes out. The infected came BEFORE the hunters did, I'm pretty sure. Maybe have that confused but they definitely didn't come out of a hole.

This is going to be a TMI moment. I had to pause when Ellie and Sam are looking at the comic book. I had an accident 8 years ago this month. I have a long thin scar on my leg where they had to operate to clear a blocked artery. They didn't know if they were going to have to amputate the leg because it had been losing its warmth by the time I made it to the hospital. I spent 5 months in the hospital, had to learn how to walk again. It took everything out of me to get back up and not just say "f*ck it, I'll stay a cripple". I fought and suffered every day so I would regain a little bit of my mobility. 3 years ago a friend of mine who's a tattoo artist tattooed on my leg the biggest "f*ck you" Karma ever received. I answered one of my all time favorite Game Of Thrones' quote. "There is only one God and his name his Death. And what do we say to Death?" So above the thin scar, I had the words "Not Today" written Underneath the thin scar, I have another favorite quote of mine, taken from the best video game story of all time. "Endure and Survive" I had been waiting for this moment ever since I started watching the show. I'm a cry baby, so you can be damned sure I was crying my eyes out Also, you said "Those are all just people"... That's the genius about The Last Of Us series... the moral ambiguity of everybody's choices to do what they did "to survive" is always up for debate (except the rapers, those need to die)...
