@melancholycookies4 жыл бұрын
Bigo Jr. his brutality and will for survival came from sarah’s death in the beginning of the first game. he wore the watch she gave him everyday for 20 years, even though it ended up breaking, so that shows he still held some sort of grief up until meeting ellie and building their bond. so to say “he can’t go soft” is bullshit because after rescuing her from the hospital, you can clearly see that he changed majorly in character to hide the truth from ellie.
@bongzeemo4 жыл бұрын
frootdelrey you used a really bad example, after rescuing Ellie from the hospital it shows just how evil Joel is. He brutally killed the first guard as well as all the others. The only change in his character at that moment was that he had someone to protect AT ALL COSTS, which he definitely demonstrated at the hospital. Your example was bullshit. I think the porch scene is so important. It's the image that last flashes in Ellie's memory as she's drowning Abby. Ellie's vengeance was so fueled by that image of seeing Joel die, but remembering this scene is what reminded her about forgiveness. There's an emotional inner conflict of Ellie grappling with Joel's decision that's paralleled with her conflict of desiring vengeance. Ellie's anger at Joel for his decision mirrors and carries over into her anger for vengeance. The flashbacks are presented in a way that you and Ellie frame her last words with Joel were that of the fight, and she never really got to repair that relationship or say how she really felt, and that unresolved emptiness acts as a powerful motivator for vengeance. But I think when she remembers this memory, she's remembers that she was able to set her relationship with Joel on the right track despite not having enough time to completely forgive Joel. Though it's still a sad circumstance nonetheless, but I think the distinction between the two mindsets is that she did get some sort of resolution with Joel. She was able to make up for their fight at the party, and at least set that she would try to forgive Joel rather than have a deep seated anger at him. I think her remembering that she was forgiving Joel is what makes her let Abby go.

Ellie's vengeance wasn't just about killing the people who took Joel from her, but about taking revenge on them for taking away her chance at forgiving him. Even at their worst she still loved him deeply. It's impossible to know if she could have ever truly forgiven him, but the fact that she couldn't even try is so heartbreaking. In her final confrontation with Abby, she remembers her last conversation with Joel and in that moment she realises the only way to break the cycle of pain and hurt she has to forgive Abby. Both women were in the right, as much as that pains us to hear. Joel had done horrible things and was the villain in Abby's history just as much as she was the villain in Ellie's. After killing Joel, Abby finds out that revenge doesn't make the pain go away and that after everything she has sacrificed for the chance to kill the man who killed her father it still leaves her empty and unfulfilled. Then, through her experience with Lev and the SCARs, she learns to empathise with her enemy and by the time she comes to confront Ellie for the murder of her friends, she realises that she has to let it go if she wants the pain and suffering to end. She gives Ellie a chance to move on and keep what's left of her life. A chance she herself has wasted. But Ellie wastes that chance as well. The pain is too deep. So she goes off to finish what she started, losing everything and everyone in the process, even her ability to play the guitar one of the last things Joel had left her. And then right as she's about to kill Abby she hesitates and realises that in doing so she will give up the last thing she can keep the memory of Joel alive with. In that moment, Abby becomes a surrogate for Joel in her eyes. Ellie decides to forgive a person who just like Joel did something terrible not out of hate for someone, but out of love for the person that someone killed. In letting Abby live, she gives herself a second chance to forgive and to love again. She holds on to her own humanity just like Joel did. This story wasn't trying to say that Ellie was wrong for wanting or even for taking revenge. It was about exploring what is lost in the process and how the only true way to keep our own humanity alive, is to forgive and to empathise with the people around us. Sometimes both sides are right. Sometimes both sides are wrong. But we have to move past the anger and the hatred if we want to make this world a better place. Hate breeds hate but not even a virus is as infectious as an act of love. So in the immortal words of Bill and Ted: Be excellent to each other.

This is deeper than most of the people can understand. In my eyes, Ellie tought she had to die, saving the human race. Joel saw her for what she was, and gave her a chance to live like a normal girl and not like a bless from heaven that had to be sacrificed. He did it in part for himself, but mostly for her, and i understood that in that final scene where Joel says he would do it all over again. In the end everybody look at Joel as a monster, when in reality he always act for the ones who he care, as its shown when he take a shotgun blast on his leg, knowing he is going to die, but the only things he says is "tommy" because heis worried for is Brother. And eventually Ellie understand what he did for her, and feel guilty for hate him in the last time she had to share with him. I think in the end she is broken not for the orrible things she did to take revenge for his death. She is broken beacuse she lost him. She died with him on that floor. Nothing Ellie can say or even her hating him for the rest of her life would make him regret taking her from that hospital. He loves her too much to have let her die. They knocked the facial animation for that part out of the park, and Troy Baker did an amazing job acting.

if you guys read the lyrics to the song Joel is playing (Helplessly hoping by Crosby Stills & Nash) its about two lovers who care about each other but were never sure if it was destiny to be together. They are lonely, they bring each other freedom, and finally, they are "for each other." The representation of this between Joel and Ellie fits this story perfectly and it astounds me with how well the creators decided to go with this song as the finale. Their love for one another is unknown yet they grew apart only to realize they grew together in perfect harmony. It takes someone special to do that to you.

I just wish more people would realize that Ellie fucking won. She got her revenge. She took everything from Abby except Lev. She destroyed her life. When she was drowning her and she had that flashback, she realized killing Abby wasn’t brining Joel back. “Just take him and go” she didn’t want lev going without Abby the way she was going without Joel. She still had a shred of humanity left and she was finally able to let go.

@@mccon2ej Yeah. Ellie in the end is the stronger and arguably better person than Joel was. Her losing her fingers and not being able to play the guitar (and ultimately leaving it behind) is just the crushing symbolization of her leaving the memory of Joel. I think that little flashback of Joel playing the guitar (when she was choking Abby) was that in the end, Ellie wants to remember Joel as the person he becomes after meeting her -- which we don't get to see that much in this game, unfortunately. She refuses to become a person that is identified by her past (unlike Joel was with Sarah). It's this love and Joel having found the person that fills the void that drives him to selfishly make the decision to take Ellie away. It's beautiful really, but very selfish. It's a very tragic story. It's so very painful. But hey, "I know you wish things were different -- I wish things were different. But they ain't." -Joel. But hey, "All you need is three fingers, man." -Manny, the pendejo.

it's actually pretty genius. ever since the incident in seattle, the only image ellie could see of joel was him brutalized and lying on the ground bleeding. that was all the memories of him that she had been seeing. and right as she was about to drown abby and finally get her revenge, she sees a different image of joel - for a split second in her mind, she sees him sitting on his porch, guitar in hand, looking at her benevolently. we later find out that this image is this memory of hers with joel, the last conversation they ever have before he dies. she tells her that what he did was fucked up and she doesn't believe she's capable of forgiving him, but she wants to try and forgive him regardless, to which joel says "I'd like that". and we see that image of joel in abby just as ellie is about to drown her. she remembers her promise to joel - that she would try her best to forgive him. and ellie could never fulfill that promise because she lost joel before she could completely forgive him. so she instead fulfills that promise by forgiving abby (another person she believed she could never forgive), thus in an indirect way, symbolizing that she has forgiven joel in her heart too. by doing that, she's left the memories of abby and joel's death behind her, her heart is now at ease. but it's a bittersweet ending, she was waaaaaaaaay too late in doing the right thing, and revenge just consumed everything she had left in her happy life. i can't stress enough how much i love this game. it's most certainly a piece of art and naughty dog just cemented themselves as the master of storytelling with this one if there was any doubt about that before.
@tvremote93944 жыл бұрын
one more silver lining in this whole thing is that throughout the game, we think that the last conversation ellie had with joel was her shouting angrily at him after he drove off seth. we thought that ellie had refused to talk to joel properly ever since she found the truth in front of the hospital all the way till his death. but by showing this scene at the end of the game, we feel relieved that that was not the case, joel died knowing that ellie wasn't eternally angry at him and wanted to forgive him eventually.

Towards the end, the mom writes "I'm not going to lie, this is a pretty messed up world. It won't be easy. The thing you always have to remember is that, life is worth living! Find your purpose and fight for it." Then you have Joel at the end of Part 1 that tells her to find something to fight for. Ellie has the memories that will drive her forward. I believe that this was a game where she was ready to die but also die trying; then finally at the end of the story got the will to live on. Ellie in the epilogue is in a great mental state. She is sad and grieving but that’s normal and healthy. She learned to forgive not only Joel but herself. She realized that her life isn’t her immunity and that she is deserving of love. She can’t play the guitar - but she no longer needs to either. Her life’s meaning in the epilogue is a blank slate (in a good way) - what used to be her survivor’s guilt haunting her death is now gone. She thought her life meaning was her self-sacrifice which Joel took away. Now she is completely free. Free to live her life, to give her life her own purpose, to love and be loved. It’s a very hopeful ending and I’m very much looking forward to Part 3 so we can finally see Ellie in a state where we all want her to be. It cost her 2 fingers, but she reclaimed her autonomy. Ellie’s strength, resilience and willpower to live even after hitting rock bottom is honestly in a way inspiring. Ellie in Part 1 was an incredible character, but Ellie in Part 2 has positioned her as my favorite character in any form of media. She’s gone through immense physical and mental trauma since 14, and hit absolute rock bottom in Part 2, and yet she still picks herself back up. She still finds her life worth fighting for. She’s gotten kicked down so many times, she’s gone through so much, but she doesn’t give up on her life.

It would have been a good story.... for a standalone movie. The main thing that critics don't get is that while the first game was a very good game gameplay-wise, what drove it was Joel and Ellie's developing relationship. That is why you see fans hating it while critics love it. Critics are supposed to review the game as unbiased as possible. The problem is that the fans do have a bias and that bias was what made the ending of the first game so emotionally confusing and great because you don't necessarily support his decision but you deeply resonate with him.

This melancholy in her silence already says everything, she is already tired of what happened in the past, and as we can see. She probably won't forget Joel, but she will learn to deal with this pain by leaving a part of her behind and trying to move on, as she is wearing Dina's bracelet. Dude as sad as the ending is, he's perfect, the philosophy behind him is amazing.

Beautiful, sad... After 41h of gameplay on survival, my heart was crushed... And I love this game for it, since the first trailer this is the kind of story I was getting ready for and wanted to experience. Unfortunately most people weren't ready for this. I don't know, maybe they wanted some live happily ever after kindda story. I understand, most people don't know how to deal with sorrow and hurt, but I love when movies, games, music and art in general crush my feelings

To me, this flashback is what gave the game a secretly almost happy ending. You spend the whole game thinking Ellie never got to forgive Joel, and he died thinking she’d hate him forever. It haunts you the entire game, and at the end it seems Ellie really lost everything in the pursuit of revenge. But then you realize no, they were on the path to forgiveness. Joel knew things would be ok with them eventually. Ellie would heal with time. There’s a sort of resolution in her mind I think when she sets down the guitar and walks away. She’s accepting what’s happened and moving on. One of the most layered and emotionally complex finales ever.
@stevengrant91989 ай бұрын
I totally agree! The part where ellie doesnt kill abby isnt meant to just be “REvEngE iS, So DOnt Do IT” its a message saying maybe theres still hope. For all of us. Maybe we can all still be better. Ellie finally realised why Joel really saved her. Its because in a cruel and broken world, a cure wont fix anything. But kindness and compassion for one another will. The giraffe in the first game is a metaphor for that: purity and love. Now ellie finally sees that too, and is able to truly make a difference and move on. (Hence her literally walking away in the ending.) The entire game is one of, if not THE most Human stories.

One of the most painful things is that you hurt your loved one. And getting a sec chance is somehow a blessing. His breath is telling how much anxiety he had, that he was about to maybe lose her once again. But this time he could not simply control it. It looked like a million tons of pressure was released from Joel from her saying ''I would like to try'' I can only imagine how happy Joel was from that moment.

As someone with PTSD, I really liked the ending of this game. This is just my opinion, but for me - At the end Ellie was suffering with PTSD, obviously - not sleeping, not eating, the flashbacks, the going off by herself into the woods, and the feeling she HAD to go after abby - is realistic to me. it's difficult to describe anyone without it, but PTSD can often feel like you are physically trapped with no way out of your own reality. That your whole life is closing on you. That the past is forever there, suffocating you. Obviously you relive it through flashbacks, but it's more than that. When Ellie said she had to go after abby, it was because she felt she had to not because she wanted to - She wanted to stay with her new family, but she had to stop her brain reliving the traumatic past again and again. She had to escape the trap, and she felt the only way was to kill abby - the person who really made her feel trapped to begin with. but I think she knew, deep down, it wouldn't help her escape. but hey, desperate times, amiright? When ellie finally confronted abby, what were her words? "I cant let you leave" She could have said anything else "I won't let you leave" or "I'm going to kill you". Those would be words from someone confident, someone making the rules. but she didn't. those words "I can't let you leave" were very specific. they're words from someone not in control - someone who feels they didnt make the decision. A soldier following orders would say "I can't let you leave" or someone feeling like they had no choice in the matter, someone trapped - like ellie. At the very end ellie didnt have to kill Abby. When she was on the verge of killing abby, when abby couldnt fight back and was about to drown, Ellie had basically won at that point. it didnt even matter if abby lived or died past that point, as there was nothing abby could have done to change the outcome, and ellie realized that she probably has "won". And it didn't help. There was no opening of the trap, it didnt fix anything so she let abby go and she wept. still trapped. It wasnt until she came back, sat alone with guitar she could no longer play, and thought about joel and forgiveness that, maybe, she realized that the only way out of the trap was to forgive mistakes of the past. forgive yourself for not being able to change the past. forgive others for being human. I dunno. maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see, see what makes sense to me. But still, I like the ending. People complain about the ending, saying ellie didn't get her revenge against abby. but they miss the fact that everything after the farmhouse - Ellie isnt going for revenge. Shes going because she feels like she has to, to try to fix herself.

On a much simpler note, Lev would be absolutely fucked if Ellie had killed Abby, she'd have 3 options 1) kill a trans child, which is an absolutely insane ending 2) kill a trans kids guardian in front of them and then basically take them hostage forever, which also makes Ellie into a horrible person 3) abandon the trans kid in the wilderness, where it's probably going to get raped, murdered or both neither the writers nor Ellie herself could live that down, once Lev came into the picture it had to turn into an ending of forgiveness

“I would do it all over again.” What a perfect summation of the series’s themes. Through the story, there’s always this message about needing to cherish the smaller experiences despite them being part of (or complicit, in Joel’s case) a dark chapter in a person’s life. Joel’s return to fatherhood was never built to last, but at the very least, he still has all those good times. Same as Ellie succumbing to revenge, it’s just as ephemeral. We think we want to be somebody, but accepting how we feel in this moments is the more important part. We can choose a new beginning, while still accepting our past. We can do it all over again.

She surely lost herself. Joel's last shot was so damn sad. Just a sad old man. He did what he did out of love for Ellie. He loved her like a daughter 😭. She finally felt redemption once she was about to kill Abby. She remembered the last good memory she had with him in where she tells him she'd like to forgive him, same applies to Abby? I think that memory of Joel more sums her knowing he wouldn't want her to go through with it, and that to be selfless and let Abby who, like Joel, is this innocent child's now protector with Lev, free to go, to give them a second chance at being better people, the same way Joel found a second chance with Ellie. Joel wanted for Ellie to be a better person, despite pushing her hate too far and losing everything she's ever cared about in the process, to finally let go of the anger and pain.

Yes. Abby and Lev made it. They found the fireflies! Fun fact: Like Joel committed atrocities until he found Ellie, Abby committed atrocities (torturing Joel) until she found Lev. The fact that Abby bring lev's corpe in the beach reminded so much of Joel.

Watching the Joel silently break down like that broke my heart. He cares and loves Ellie so much, she’s his whole world, and despite everything, just wants what’s best for her. Even if she doesn’t want him around. I’m just glad that they got some progress before he passed, that Ellie was finally ready and willing to try and forgive him. That little piece of hope, “but I’d like to try”, slowing cracking the door open for possibility of their relationship growing and them overcoming obstacles. This conversation is so heavy knowing that it was their last, yet also relieving knowing that Joel passed away knowing that Ellie was ready to forgive. I’m glad she was finally making it towards acceptance and was finally starting to get some closure and some peace of mind after everything. It sucks seeing Joel go like that, one of my favorite video game characters ever, but The Last of Us Part 1 & 2 are masterpieces and I’m so glad I was along for the ride and got to see everything be released when it was, and watch the story unfold.

Joel’s death was tragic, but he died so Ellie could live. If he knew that him saving Ellie would mean his torture and death he would’ve still done it. Joel got his happiness is seeing Ellie alive. In seeing her grow up. Have a crush. Fall in love. Even if he couldn’t be in it, it didn’t matter. What mattered was her being happy. Thankfully he died knowing Ellie loves him and wants to forgive him. What really hurts is Ellie noticing this too late and not being able to fix things. That is something very traumatic.

Weird how The Last Of Us played such a big part of my teens growing up. I used to be obssessed with Joel and had shirts with him on. My KZbin picture is still of him xD But I never knew my relationship with my own dad would be so similar to Joel's and Ellie's. My dad hid my mother's death from me for a while to protect me at an important stage of my life. He did a lot of things to protect me but ended up hurting me more. I spent my teens, not hating him, but almost pretending he didn't exist, emotionally. But he continued to love me very much regardless, in his own way. Then 9 years later covid happened and I began to rekindle our relationship. I had done my emotional healing, but felt like I have held onto the idea I didn't have a dad anymore longer than I needed to. I realised what a shame it was feel like I didn't have a family whilst they were still alive. He was old and needed support and I gave him that, as much as I could. I could see how happy this made him, and it made me happy to feel like I was starting to get my dad back. I couldn't see him much, as I lived far away, but would have a call every week or two. He would always talk a lot about himself and... about the same sort of things.. but this most recent call, our last one, he didn't talk a lot. He just listened to me, how I was, my outlook on life. It was a really nice call, he definitely felt like my dad here. A few days later, I woke up to my partner getting a call at 6am, and somehow instantly I knew what it meant. No idea how my brain figured it out. My dad had suddenly died. We hadn't fully fixed our relationship, but he knew that's what I wanted and he knew I loved him. And he knew I knew he loved me. I guess Ellie and me left it too late. Ellie more late than me. The lesson is you'll never know how long your friends and family will be around. Holding onto your own negativity and pain is a waste of life.
