While it is a sad episode, Bill and Frank not only survived but thrived for 16 years together and then went out on their own terms. I’d call that a win in the apocalypse Olympics.

The raiders were there 10 years before Bill and Frank died. When the radio plays at the end of the episode before, it was because if Bill didn't reset the timer on the radio every few days, it defaulted to 80s (trouble). Since he died, he didn't set the timer and it played 80s . It was sort of an alarm . They could deliberately play 80s of course if there was trouble and they were alive. This time it was the timer running out.

Despite all the horror and brutality the world had to offer, Bill and Frank ended up being some of the VERY FEW people who were able to live out their lives (relatively) unscathed by what was out there and live in happiness. As sad as their final day may have been, it was also a beautiful triumph because they were able to have their final moments in peace and love and go out sleeping, and not enduring one terror or another.

And this seemingly one-off side story also happens to be the most important episode to Joel's Journey. Through Bill and Frank's Journey he now knows why he needs someone to save (which will make him vulnerable again to maybe repeat his worst nightmare). And in turn is the real beginning to Joel's and Ellie's story and at the same time brings what Tess said about saving who he can full circle. Brilliant storytelling.

I loved this episode. Because in the game you never see Frank. Bill helps Joel and Ellie get to a certain point at which you find Frank’s body hanging from the ceiling because he was bit and decided to kill himself before he turned. Frank and Bill had a falling out and it ended badly but you can tell from notes you find that they were together at one point but Frank got tired of Bills shit and left, it was tragic. So this episode redeemed this relationship and I’m totally okay with this.

We all know the ending is a bittersweet masterpiece and I absolutely adore Bill’s line, “I’m satisfied.” Gorgeous. HOWEVER. Frank suffered from a neurodegenerative disease, like ALS or MS. Over time he will basically lose the ability to use his muscles, to the point where he can't even swallow or breath on his own. It's a horrible way to go and you can see that he already unable to open his pill bag and ate soup instead of solid foods, while drinking with a straw, as well as his painting skills suffering heavily from it. Bill survived for four years, all alone. But only when he met Frank he started to actually live, to the point where he did not want to go back to his old lonely life, which probably already was a thing before the world went to shit. I mean, he was a closeted gay conspiracy doomsday prepper in a small US town, living in his mother's house. And without Joel & Tess smuggling deal he wouldn't have reinforced or repaired his fence and he wouldn't have medicine, they'd probably be dead long before the end of this episode, but they made it because Bill opened up through Frank and changed his ways a bit. This was the happy episode btw, but one that made a lot of people cry.

Bill and Frank dying the way they did wasn't a tragedy. They met and fell in love during the apocalypse, got to grow old together, and then got to die peacefully together in their own bed. They got to go out on their own terms. This episode could have been called, "Bill and Frank Win The Apocalypse."

There were 10 years between the raiders attacking that rainy night and when B&F die. The distress signal was not sent intentionally. Bill & Frank reset the system every month, but if they did not, the system would automatically play an '80s song. So, when the '80s song started playing on the radio at the end of episode one, that was the system kicking in automatically because they were no longer around to reset the system.
@MasterNinjaTeddyBear
@MasterNinjaTeddyBear Жыл бұрын
I believe the code song was the one we heard in the first episode but I think you have the time line a bit off because when Bill told Frank to call Joel that has already been another few more years since because the next scene we see them old and it wouldn’t take that long to cross the country to get to them. So that was a fake out of Bill dying more than anything Joel related as we see them finally make it to their house. The playlist was meant to play if Bill wasn’t there to stop it within a week I believe. It was a message to let Joel know one way or another that something happened to them. Hope this explanation helps and that you keep going.
@WaltBTB
@WaltBTB Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's exactly how the radio broadcast was programmed. If Bill didn't reset it after a week or so, it would automatically play an 80s playlist indicating trouble. Unfortunately, Joel and Tess never heard it before leaving Boston. Or actually, I should say FORTUNATELY, because not knowing something happened to Bill and Frank lead Joel to still go to their home in search of help.

When Bill got shot, it was 10 years earlier than the main events of the show. In the episode it says "10 years later" after the raider attack scene, as it opens up to Frank in the wheelchair. So the "Call Joel" thing happend 10 years before "the radio cut on" that you're talking about...
@oh7henry

Raiders scene then 10 years later we see Frank in a wheelchair. The next day, Frank decides it to be his last. Thevradio was programmed to play 80's songs after 3 weeks of it not being reset. So 3 weeks plus however many days it took Joel and Ellie to get to their house from Boston. Asia and Bj were right, it was about a month of them being dead.

"Even in a zombie apocalypse, all we really crave is human connection." The beautiful score that plays when Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) get married is called "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter. It was also famously used in the movies "Shutter Island" (2010), "Disconnect" (2012) and "Arrival" (2016).

Asia had the right idea about the radio songs, but from when the raiders attacked to when Bill and frank died was a span of ten years, so when you see in that first episode of that 80s song come on after Joel, tess and Ellie left the apartment that was most likely Bill setting it to that song because that was when their deaths were going to happen and it probably took a couple weeks before Joel and Ellie reached Bill's house and than finding that they had passed away.

The strawberry scene really demonstrates one of the major themes of the story - "strawberries vs guns?" or put another way, simply surviving or trying to have hope? And the idea of "selfless love" vs "selfish love" is another theme that repeats as well. This part was the biggest change from the game (in the game you didn't see the flashbacks, but the past was written about in letters that Joel finds) and initially I was annoyed they changed the story a little from the game, but by the time I got to the end I realized the story needed that extra "selfless vs selfish" contrast and was glad they added this. Get ready for more thought provoking moral dilemmas! Cheers

Asia, your timeline is a little off. When Bill got shot and told Frank to call Joel, it was 10yrs before Joel, Tess, and Ellie left the QZ. The song that came on at the end of episode 1, is basically the time when Bill and Frank died, because Frank didn't reset the song. And that's why the music was playing when Ellie and Joel went into the bunker with the radio.

When he said "call Joel", that was ten years prior. The music played because they died and Bill didn't reset the timer. Joel said if Bill didn't reset the timer it was set to play 80's music. So we don't know how long that timer was. The house was a little dusty but the food was still attracting flies so maybe a week or a few weeks. Him telling frank to call Joel was to show that Bill trusted Joel would protect Frank. Then in the letter he tells Joel that he respects him and they have a job to do.

I don't think the music timeline is quite right. When they were attacked in the night, they maybe pkayed trouble music but that isn't what Joel heard before heading off. Ten whole years pass between that attack on their home and when they take their own lives. Because they were going to take their lives, the property would no longer be safe. They weren't protecting it. So Bill would have set the 80s music playing on his last night so Joel and Tess (he would assume Tess is alive) would expect possible danger

I had two sisters with MS (one's passed), and it's very hard to manage, especially if you don't have a lot of medical resources to help you out.

Video Game: Bill and Joel knew each other for years, introduced Ellie to Bill. Bill and Ellie constantly bicker at each other and get on each other's nerves. Frank stole the car battery from Bill, leaving a note saying he "hates Bill's guts." Frank already had hung himself after getting infected and he is never introduced in the game. There's a part where Bill and Joel have to push-start a truck while Ellie is driving, while the infected chase after you. Wish they would've at least added that.

Do you guys remember that Bill and Frank were mentioned in the first few episodes? Ellie asks if they are nice and Joel said to her that Frank was lol. Also, realizing the radio played a loop of 80s song after a certain time made sense! Frank has an unspecified neuromuscular disorder that has no cure, and he was slowly getting worse, so he wanted to die before that happened. That is understandable. I kind of find them dying together really sweet, but its a bit sad that Bill didn't try to live longer and hook up with Joel and Tess. Frank was Bill's one person worth saving... Ellie is Joel's... :(

@ASia and BJ great lovestory one of the few changes the Show did that was BETTER then what they did in the game. I know that since of loss I lost my wife on 9/5 last year and I would give up my life in a minute to bring her back to us even for a week. The pain is real. If you read this take pictures and videos and love tight ppl love tight. Thanks @Asia and @BJ for going down this reactions you guys have some epic stuff to come :)

Bill & Frank an epic Love Story we didn't know we needed. Thank you Naughty Dog. 20:00 Rule #32 "Enjoy the little things." ((if you know you know)) Frank had ALS.

Remember also that Joel didn't get pancake mix or a cake for his birthday AND Mrs. Adler made oatmeal raisin cookies, which Sarah didn't like and they never had a chance to eat anyway. They escaped death by luck at the very start.
