Well let me tell you guys this is shaping up to be the single best video game to tv/film adaptation ever made. It's doing everything right not only to grab new people who have never seen anything related to the last of us, but is also adding so much value for people who have played the games to death. It doesn't change what matters, and where it can add something of value, they make sure that addition IS valuable. Please leave a like for this incredible first episode!

Its not shot by shot the game, but thats not something important, making a game interesting and fun is very different from doing the same in a movie, is even more complex and difficult, there is no good gameplay here to keep you entertained, that's why i don't mind them changing things as long as they keep doing good scenes, this episode was great
@nikjovan4816 Жыл бұрын
They nailed this first episode. Not only are all the video game scenes basically done perfectly, but the added material for the neighbours and Sarah, the little child walking to the city and then seeing what happens to him, showing more of Joels life, cutting down the Robert scenes effectively by giving us a scene with Tess before for context, since in the game you have to play through a level to find him and they obviously can't replicate that in a TV show. It was great. The actors were great and especially Pedro Pascal who is the perfect Joel.

One thing incredibly interesting that I found out listening to the companion podcast to the show’s 1st ep: the show runner mentions how their initial plan was to end the first episode right after Sarah dies, but the HBO execs that watched it said they needed to show more of the relationship between Ellie and Joel in order to bring the audience back to watch the second episode. So they just combined episodes 1 and 2! And that was a brilliant call, in my opinion. It also explained a lot...why a premiere episode started out so long, when that’s usually reserved for the season finale, and also why the season is 9 episodes long, rather than the usual 10-episode HBO season. Highly recommend listening to that podcast if you liked the episode...it really is an excellent companion for not just lovers of the show, but also of the game. Can’t wait for the rest of this season!

On top of the obvious, the sound design of the show is top tier imho; particularly the minimal use of sountrack. There's almost no "background" music leading up to the time Sarah wakes up for the emergency, except for small moments to sell the building of tension. A creepy motif in class, one at the Horolgist's place, another when she visits the neighbors, etc. Even the Avril Lavine song on the radio in the kitchen serves to drive the tension because it's in-shot and used to set-up the announcement about Jakarta. Master class stuff if you ask me.

I assumed it was set in 2003 because that's a period of time before social media was really a thing. MySpace wasn't even widely in use at that point. This makes the idea of people being caught by surprise more believable since the dissemination of information would be much slower. Sarah wouldn't have been caught off guard if she had even just glaced at Twitter or Instagram at some point that day and many more people would've probably been able to save themselves. So, the year doesn't matter post-collapse but it technology and social media pre-collapse probably would've made a huge difference in how the story played out.

I like a lot of the changes they did with the show. For example, the spores are not in this and they went with the original concept art before the spores called “the tendrils”. Realistically all the spores would be in the air so everyone would be dead or the infected would run out of spores, and they wouldn’t be just in some zones. Realistically they would still have spores in the hair and clothes, it would be impossible so I love it this way more because it’s more realistic and TLOU is very grounded and realistic, so it makes more sense like this and also the tendrils makes the infected EVEN MORE creepy and show how all of them are connected so I love it. "There's things that work in the game that would just not work in the show," Druckmann. And how the infection works. In the game it takes like two days to turn, in here like they showed in the scene with the little boy in the sign if you get bitten in the leg being the farthest part to the brain it takes a lot of hours or a day so it makes more sense, then torso, shoulders and hands, it takes some hours and then head it takes minutes and that makes it even more scarier, I love it. The plane scene is WAY better in my opinion, is more tense and more cinematic so I like this more than just the car crash. Like even smaller change like the guy that shot Sarah saying “I’m sorry” is an improvement. It’s shows he is just following orders and didn’t wanted to do it. Amazing. And one scene that I like way more in the show than in the game is when Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught and Joel puts himself in front of Ellie and then have PTSD with Sarah, THAT scene for me was way better and I love it. I love all the new scenes we got, everyone in the cast is perfect, and the scene after Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught I love how Joel had PTSD, it made the scene more emotional and I liked it better in the show. And about the public execution this may be sound harsh but I get it. They have to put order and fear, if people leave and get out whenever they want and even only one gets infected and one of them goes back inside the quarantine zone they could all get infected. They don’t have prisons or enough resources so it’s harsh but I get it. By far the most faithful live action adaptation and with only the first 30m of the episode it was the best adaptation. Amazing pilot episode! 10/10 I love it.
@babadimbadabum1579 Жыл бұрын

Also, looked up the significance of the show's opening scene being set in 1968. Most likely answer is that "Night of the Living Dead", which inspired a lot of the development of TLOU, came out in 1968. Could be just a nod to that. You could also make up a fun head canon explanation of the film existing within the world, which can lend to the panic we see that 60s audience/host have - realizing the connection between the idea of a zombie outbreak and the scientist's retort about fungi.
@kobayashi.official Жыл бұрын
Late to the conversation, but if Joel is turning 36 in 2003 then he was born in 1967-68. So this was all predicted as Joel was coming into existence. At least that's my theory.

@toxicheadshot360 Жыл бұрын
And yea to thik this could happen in theory, this makes much more sense than other zombie movies because in other movies they are dead with rotting bodies so they wouldn't be able to move around much and would die die just by being exposed to the elements, with this they are somewhat alive aren't really rotting etc this is just way more realistic and has the possibility of actually happening

Not really as a vet spe in microbiology this part is very confusing and inaccurate. There are a lot of fungi who infect humans including the brain. We also have anti-fongus and we can’t really predict how they will work on a fictional Cordyceps specie so saying there nothing we can do is very dramatic. Also Cordyceps are use in médecine and cooking. I guess you can say that the part were he explain evolution is more or less true but it need to be more than just a 1 degree difference, but it’s an easy way to explain how evolution is needed when the environment change. It can evolve or it can die and disappear forever like must of the time it’s happened. Don’t get me wrong I love the franchise but I wish they didn’t include this part…
@jordantaylor260 Жыл бұрын
Actually everything they talk about in the cold open is scientifically true and therefore plausible. Eg. The first stage of cordyceps infection in ants is twitching, which is what the old lady is doing in the background when Sarah is looking at the dvd.

So, on the choice of years that Carson brought up, my theory is that was done for relatability for how much time a 20 year skip actually is. When you start off seeing a classroom with George W. Bush on the wall, people can look at that and be like "Holy shit that was forever ago." Like for me, in 2003, I was a 7th grader giddy with excitement because I was going to a school dance with the girl I had a huge crush on. That felt like a lifetime ago. Then post timeskip, you see people with Operation Desert Storm shirts and Gore Lieberman shirts in 2023. It stands out like a bright neon sign because Gore Lieberman was so long ago. No one has those shirts anymore. Hell, half the people watching this probably don't even know who they were. I remember only because my parents were big on Gore back then. It puts it into perspective. The audience of this show (namely adults) can relate to that big a time skip more effectively that way, moreso than something more requiring imagination like 2023 to 2043 or 2013 to 2033. Thats what I think.

Try the PC version when it comes out in a couple months. Motion sickness is more likely happening with low frame rates and low field of view settings - especially when you passively watch, instead of controlling the camera yourself. I think the scene with the girl, which generally was a massive red herring, was also there for world building by showing how fucked up everything has become, similar to the executions.

At the same time, they nailed the parts that HAD to be exactly like the game (at least if they didn't want a riot in the streets by the games lol), aka all the night sequence. Many other things can be effotlesly changed in the future, so hopes are high. That said, we'll have to adapt our ears to a higher voice for Joel, the effect is less macho, more human, maybe. I personally dislike the casting choice for Ellie. Not because all the usual crappy discussions, just for aestetic reasons: Original Ellie is very delicate, as a contrast for her being so unlikable at the start. This Ellie is a badass from the start, for me it's a big difference, especially in regard of Joel's way of -no spoiler here - coming close to her

It was Ashley Johnson who did the casting for Ellie and she has said that Bella is great as the character and personally she did an amazing job embodying her. Ellie has always been snarky even at the start, and this is setting the stage of her personality since it is a TV series. Her vulnerability will definitely be explored in future episodes. So far, perfect game adaptation and hopefully this will set the bar of any future games that people want to make into a movie/series.

Ashley Johnson plays her mother and has a very distinct face, Bella looks very similar to her

Of course I was not complaining for the sake of complaining, It was just a personal preference. I mean, Bella to me looks more like Tlou2 Ellie than tlou1 Ellie, if you know what I mean. Less of a rescued puppy, more of a snarky teenager

@@JacopoBasanisi Don't really care about how she looks but the way she portrays the character and she did an amazing job. That has always been the case even before this series dropped and with any other shows out there. Ellie didn't have "lost puppy" energy. She is exactly the way Ellie was as a kid. You might need to run through the game again. But again it's your opinion and they can't always please everybody.

@@denisegailvalera1217 I agree, I enjoyed the episode and I have no reason to doubt she will be good. Maybe they choose to highlight different shades of her character, or maybe it's just the usual reflection of an individual experience (gaming) vs a shared experience (watching a show)

Its funny but every reaction the YT content creators forget that nothing bad has happened yet so theres no reason for the characters to susupect something bad is gonna happen in the beginning

Just because you don’t suspect zombie apocalypse, doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be sketched out in these situations lol
