given that it wasn't critical to the main timeline plot, I wish they would have made it more realistic and had her not recommend bombing (because that's not only extremely unreliable as a sterilisation method, but will force all humans to try to escape, spreading the virus), but instead martial law with a sort of extreme covid lockdown - to try to isolate and immobilise everybody as much as possible. besides the lack of effectiveness of bombardment at that stage, it's also narratively implausible that a scientist would jump to recommending that much collateral damage so quickly. edit: oh, and she didn't even say a word about trying to secure the grain products that she referred to as a "perfect substrate".

It really rattled me how tough the clickers were, and how much they emphasized the importance of just avoiding them because dealing with them is just always so dangerous. Also loved how effective the fungus on their heads was a deflecting gunfire. If you were concerned that this was just another zombie franchise, that first encounter really puts it to bed and sets the tone that these things are terrifying, deadly monsters. The major change around Tess’ death in the show was, IMO, a better send off for her character. Tess is badass, sometimes a bad person, but also has lots of good too. About that chicken sandwich... 20 years later, they've probably figured out how to make grain products like bread without getting people sick. (Maybe it's simple. The heat of an oven should kill mold, even if it won't remove toxins created by mold. But a lot of recipes use flour that doesn't go through an oven. Also, in a world that hasn't had a FungiZombie Apocalypse, no-one is careful about flour dust in the way they are with, say, raw chicken. So after 2003, people might have figured out how to use flour and still be safe from the fungi.)

I just saw that the show creators made a backstory for Tess but it didn't get to be on the show, in this backstory, she was a wife and a mother, her husband and son both got infected, she killed her husband but couldn't bring herself to kill her son so she locked him in the basement, where he probably eventually became a clicker, so I think that if Tess survived, based on this story, she'd probably start to see Ellie as a daughter as well, but would still want to see her being used for a cure in the end, since she still wants to heal her actual son, which would probably create a very interesting extra layer of conflict in the end, where Joel would have to fight and kill Tess

I hope they have the these mini episodes of the start of the outbreak every episode because it’s so cool. The Dr and the military officer did great jobs to portray the fear of what was coming. They’ve made this fungus seem so frightening like the thought of it has me more scared of things growing inside me rather than turning into a monster. Also I feel the Drs scene when she is being told the facts will sit with viewers the entire season

I mentioned it on my Tumblr but another cool TLOU 2 easter egg (kinda) is the music at the end of the episode! “Allowed to be happy” is part of the part 2 soundtrack and is played in a more part 1 style in the end of ep 2! I think the choice of song especially the title is pretty significant especially cause Joel and Ellie had finally had a small moment (as mention when Joel checked his watch), and now Joel is probably going to emotionally isolate himself, but also because of Ellie’s experience of loss where everyone she knows “Has either left me or died”, and now she’s lost Tess, who was the only one of the two who was treating her nicely at this point.
