I don't think Joel making Ellie choose was irresponsible. He knew Ellie would pick him. He spent some time "trying to steal a horse". Dude was just waiting for her, and Tommy knew it the moment he saw him. Joel is still stuck in that phase where he can't really say how much he cares for Ellie. There was no choice at all. He found a convoluted way to say he'd still make the journey with her.

Joel knowing Ellie would choose him is the irresponsible thing to do. In the show, Joel is clearly a crutch with his disabilities. Tommy is a more able bodied man, who is not emotionally attached to Ellie at this moment. Joel's fear is that he is not capable physically and mentally for what is coming down the road on this mission. And well, hes probably right.
@Severian1
@Severian1 Жыл бұрын
@@TheKillaShow Joel's fear was really about him losing another person he cared about. He has his disabilities yes, (and they are a contributing factor to him trying to get Tommy to take Ellie) but he can still handle himself as we see when they are attacked after they leave the commune. He's afraid that he will care and then lose another daughter. His concerns about his capabilities were how he covered it up. He is terrified of loss. He did not want to accept that he cares for her and express that. The responsible thing, he knew, was to get the job done himself, and not endanger his brother. Remember he has Tess in mind, whose dying wish was for him to help Ellie. The irresponsible thing was him pushing Ellie unto Tommy because he was afraid of losing her, and also afraid of the pain that losing her would cause him.

Strongly disagree with Grace about Ellie's feelings about Joel. She 100% sees Joel as a father canonically in the games, and Neal/Craig said as much during their podcast discussing the episode. While it's true that their relationship isn't always healthy, it isn't because of that. It's actually because of how dangerous love can be in a world where NOTHING matters. It'll render you barbaric in order to protect your loved ones. Or drive you to blindly seek retribution. Their relationship isn't completely unhealthy either. Like the overall story and its themes, their relationship is more nuanced than something as binary as healthy vs unhealthy.

The heart panic/anxiety attack Joel is experiencing here is actually from an original concept of the game back when Neil Druckmann was still in college. In that concept, a cop with a heart condition is protecting a young girl from the infected, but the role of protector between the cop and the girl would switch at times when the cop is suffering from his condition. It's a pretty neat addition here in the show, and I love how they implemented it for the story.

@@TheKillaShow I think it's necessary that they don't show it because though we accept as the audience and fans of the game that people in this unfortunate world will do anything to survive, showing Joel on the other side of the fence so to speak would change our entire perception of his character. Imagine a prequel game of an early Joel and Tommy killing innocents and raiding for supplies. It would ruin how these characters are viewed. It's more ambiguous leaving the mystery behind it alone...in my opinion anyway

The way people talk about Joel being a bad person is crazy to me. It's not that black and white. He's not "bad" in the same way David or Kathleen were. Those two are too far gone. Joel is not. He's broken and violent and has done awful things to live. But he still has the capacity for good. Saying he's a bad person is too binary and defeats what makes the character so compelling

I don’t think Maria taking Ellie’s dirty clothes was that big of a deal? Like I get all the other problems with how Jackson is run and I agree, but saying she basically took her stuff because of communism is such a weird takeaway imo. Had she taken her backpack and her other personal belongings to distribute it to the community then I’d understand, but it was literally just dirty, worn clothes that were not shown to have any kind of emotional or personal connection to her. When she said the “rag pile” I assume they will just be made into rags to clean or something. Also she gave her clean and newer clothes! And a menstrual cup? Invaluable in an apocalypse. Yeah, maybe she should’ve asked first, but saying it was because of communism is a bit of a reach.

Yeah, that was a weird take. But communism is kind of a trigger word in the US, so people don't understand the fundamentals of what it actually means (even countries who've claimed to be that) and people have viceral reactions. Propaganda works.

The show has been showing and telling you Joel isn't a good person and that he's a broken man. This isn't a character change for him, this is him showing his true self. There's a reason Joel is up there as one of the most debated about characters, why he's listed as the villain of this game on the Villains Wiki. He's the good guy in his story and he's doing what he thinks is right, just as every good villain thinks. He's also the bad guy in a lot of other people's stories, who think they're the good guys and are willing to do what they think is right. The Last of Us is about a cycle of violence and the consequences on people, it just happens to be set in a "zombie" world but that's not what it is about. It's about more primal emotions and desires

@@TheKillaShow that's the thing, there isn't. There's purity thats scarred with Ellie and Sam, there's people trying to be better that get brought to shit like Tess, Tommy and Dina, there's people trying to move on and live happy lives after doing decidedly terrible things like Henry, Abby and Joel and there's people just trying to live and survive their circumstances like Jesse, Riley, Lev and Yara. There are no good or bad people which is something that Grace seems to have a hard time grasping. You don't root for anyone, this isn't that kinda story. Having played the games I fully know what you mean by the end. In the game the end doesn't let you off the hook with an easy "resolution". On the contrary, it really requires the player/audience to ponder philosophical/ethical questions that may not have simple answers. I was wondering (and was somewhat concerned) if they were gonna make the ending more digestible for the show but it seems they don't, which actually makes me feel better because what makes TLOU exceptional as a story is the complex flawed humanity it portrays.

I find it very interesting when siblings have their birth family which can be messy and real, but when those family members start their own lives and develop families of their own some people avoid their birth family after, its a reality they don't want to be reminded of. That's how it felt with Tommy & Joel this episode; Tommy found his paradise and Joel is a reminder of a darker past he doesn't want to remember. In the game Tommy is pretty adamant about having regrets from his years with Joel, and it does not at all seem that he was coerced into this. At one point, after Tommy refuses to take Ellie, Joel says something like "This is how you're gonna repay me for all those years I took care of us?", to which Tommy replies "Took care of us? I got nothing but nightmares from those years." The game spends a lot more time exploring Tommy and Joel's relationship and history together, as well as the events leading up to Joel changing his mind and taking Ellie. I enjoyed episode 6 but I think of all the episodes so far, this one failed more than any other episode to fully convey the story subtext shown in the game. Again, still love this episode, but it's really a shame as this was one of the best sequences in the game. I highly recommend anyone interested in learning more go look up a video of this portion of the game.

Calling Joel and Ellie’s relationship toxic feels like such 2020’s focus thing to say. I’ve seen a ton of people comment they wanted more time for bonding and conversations and what not in their journey. I don’t know what the hell kind of kumbaya families ya’ll grew up in but from 15-17 I had maybe three real convos with my parents. Ellie and Joel talk a ton on screen and I’m sure in three months have spoken multiple times as well. I feel like maybe this bonding thing is a nice idea we have in our heads but is really mostly utilitarian in practice…I think we grossly overestimate how much exchange should occur…
@None38389
@None38389 Жыл бұрын
I think you are thinking of the idea of a "toxic relationship" on the surface level too much, the issue isn't that they are "not bonding", the issues is that they are feeding into each other's trauma in an unhealthy way. Joel was not "healed" by Ellie, Ellie is more like a distraction from the pain that is the lost of Sarah which he didn't want to deal with. He emotionally "replaced" Sarah with Ellie so he doesn't have to go through the hard part of healing.

Counter argument for why Tommy maybe didn’t want Joel to journey to Jackson: the journey itself could’ve been a death sentence. Tommy maybe thought Joel just would’ve been safer staying put wherever he was. I’d be very worried to ask a family member to cross the country in this world.

i’ve never gone along with neil druckmann’s take on joel and ellis’s relationship. i’m just a humble game player and viewer, and i won’t spoil anything, but i feel his take is very cynical and totally vilifies joel (just like everyone seems to be doing in episode 6 lol) and disregards ellie’s actual agency. no one will convince me that the inciting incidence was not self defense and the only way druckmann can make it work for part two is a straight retconn. i wonder if that’s what he’ll do here.

As an anarcho-communist I feel compelled to just point out that’s a pretty lib take on leftists, specifically communists-In particular, that there is a distinction between private property and personal property, private property being what we want to abolish: Private property being, mainly, the means of production-Things like factories, the machines in factories, etc. Personal property is another matter, you can totally keep your chair, your jacket, your TV, your tools & toys, or whatever else you take with you when you move from one apartment or house to another.

I strongly urge people to play the games because they're that damn good. Grace's analysis is very insightful and interesting to hear because its always great seeing someone appreciate and give their perspective on content that others realised years prior in a different medium. This show does a great job adapting the game and although the destined outcome has already been experienced, the journey as conveyed somewhat differently is still great to experience and frankly underscores just how talented Druckmann and the Naughty Dog team are.

I dunno how Grace got "just friends" from Ellie and Joel's relationship. The father-daughter relationship is the foundation of the entire story. Bill even addressed Joel as a protector. He's her guardian. When Ellie rested her head on the back of Joel while riding horseback this episode, I certainly didn't get a BFF❤️ vibe from them. He's very clearly a father figure in her life, and she's learning from him (for better or worse).

As someone who played the game, I think your take is really interesting, even though I do not share it. To me, it seems like Joel splits ppl up in 'family' and 'everyone else' to handle the terrible things he has had to do. He would do anything for family, ANYTHING to keep them alive, but he doesn't let himsrlf care about others not belonging in that group. I feel like Joel and Ellie have become a family, but he does not want to see it. That's why the confrontation is so important. At this point, she really is his adopted daughter. And he realizes in this world where not much is left how much this connection matters. When he can't run away from her and she goes with him, he accepts her as his family and she does too. They finally don't have any walls between each other. Which makes what happens next even more hearbreaking and maybe explains the end a bit. But yes, I agree. A masterpiece. And as with any masterpiece, different ppl get different things from it. :)

Another great episode exploring every angle of what the series is all about thru each episodes. It’s old school series building and it’s been a long time since I have watched a great tv show like it. Also, what a great brotherhood story and of course the main character’s Joel - a true definition of a modern hero. I wish all the MCU series were done this way and I would have appreciated it a little bit more; not like a long movie chopped 8x to make a series out of it LOL.

It's really great seeing how you understood how both Ellie and Joel see their relationship. Being aware of the differences in how they both see their relationship helps one understand why certain choices were made at the end and why those choices didn't sit well with certain characters. Also the idea of Ellie thinking herself as a hero is important to catch because you clearly see how important it is for her to be the cure. Being the cure is how she feels she'll be redeemed after seeing others around her die for being infected.
