It was tough in 2013, and it's still tough in 2023. Obviously, the right thing to do was to give up Ellie to the Fireflies. But: 1. Marlene said, "It MIGHT lead to a cure." So you're telling Joel to risk Ellie on a possibility? 2. Just as Evan said, the logical thing is to save the many, but we don't think logically when it comes to protecting what's ours. For better or worse, Joel sees Ellie as his family now. That's why this dilemma is brilliant: there are no easy decisions here.

The cure isn't guaranteed, and if it works it would likely be distributed unproportionately to a particular faction. It's not like the whole world would get to have it, it would be a means to control everything. Why do so many people fail to calculate the following into Joel's decision (aside from the daughter trauma)? Fireflies threw a damn flash grenade at a child (didn't even say put your hands up), discerned who she was and then slapped her on an operating table with the quickness. What was so pressing? It's not like they were racing against the clock for a cure. Society been went to shit for 20 years now. I'm sorry, but at what point did doctors stop consulting with the patient to make an informed decision? And because she is a minor, an adult definitely should have been present. And the one adult there (Marlene) LIED to her. The doctor obviously forgot his oath as a physician years ago. Joel should not have lied to her. He should have said the Fireflies weren't the good guys either and that's why he left bodies.

The fatal flaw that the Fireflies made was not letting Joel and Ellie have a final talk/goodbye. It's clear that Ellie would've agreed to it, but Joel would only accept that if he heard it from her before they prepped for surgery. The way that they treated him, by separating them, not letting him see her knocking him to the ground, all that shit was prob triggering memories of Sarah's death. For them to do all of that, while telling him that his new daughter is about to die, how to expect a killer like Joel to react. While I get the line of thinking that is safe to separate them, if Marle had let them talk and Ellie got Joel to understand this is what needs to happen I don't think he'd betray her wishes directly like that.

I really enjoyed the discussion! In regards to Joel I feel like a major reason as to why he latched onto Ellie is because she was something worth protecting, not because she was the cure, but because of her loyalty and dependability paired with her hopeful and innocent nature. From the moment he lost Sarah, Joel had long given up on humanity- it wasn't the infected that took away the person he lived for it was humans. Joel was a teen dad on his own, all he had to keep going was his daughter and the thing that killed her was a soldier someone who's job is to protect and serve. Same thing with Tommy, they were separated for God knows how long because of community. Ellie came into the picture and she brought back the empathy and paternal nature he had abandoned the moment he lost Sarah. She brought back the sense of loyalty he was waiting for that Tommy couldn't sustain (in Joel's eyes, I don't blame Tommy at all), and above all else she was able to reteach him how to live with purpose not just survive. Even if they hadn't known each other very long the impact was substantial. Plus, Joel never cared about humanity, it was hinted at in the first episode when he ignores the wellbeing of civilians- he lives for himself and the people he loves. Is it selfish, yeah, but look how shitty the world turned out anyways- a cure wasn't going to help unless it was administered in the beginning of the pandemic. The cordyceps didn't ruin society they just acted as a catalyst, even if the fireflies somehow managed to curate a cure I kinda think everything was too far gone to rebuild and I'm sure Joel was aware of that after 20 years of living in apocalyptic society.

The thing these guys don’t seem to understand is this isn’t the first time the procedure was done , it was actually done 12 times and all of them failed - it can be found in the game lore - apart from that it’s obvious Joel isn’t a good person but I’m sure any loving father would have done the same to protect their daughter- even if she isn’t her biological daughter she still matters to him and the bond that they share is great. It is incredibly selfish but with the chance to save the world who knows ? All that’s known is Joel loves Ellie and Ellie loves Joel, a true father daughter bond

At the same time, you have to understand how Riley explained that she used to have a family and Ellie never had anyone, now she does do you think she would make a simple decision to give up her life. She just told Joel that she would follow him anywhere afterward. The argument that surrounds the decision made at the end starts with the fireflies for not allowing Ellie to make a decision, or talk with Joel. If it was Ellie's wish I believe Joel would have let it happen, Joel is definitely selfish but he wouldn't go against that.

Right? Marlene doesn't know Ellie. We know that because Ellie didn't know her. So it doesn't matter that she was friends with the mom and was there when she was born. She can't say I know what decision she would make. Bitch, how? With what information do you know that? Can't win with that situation anyway though. Cause if you ask me, even if they had told Ellie and she was the one to make the decision and she agreed, it's still fucked. Like, a 14 year old kid, having survivors guilt, being traumatized by a lot, adding the fresh trauma of almost getting cut up and maybe eaten, almost being raped, having to kill to free herself. That's someone I wouldn't have make a life or death decision anytime soon. And all so they might find a cure. Might. And with what lab you making that cure, who distributes it and decides who will get it or not. Cause you already know they're not giving the shit to anyone they don't think deserves it. Shit has so many layers. I like it, get people thinking and talking.

Joel was the closest thing to her guardian. Marlene met her literally twice. I know Ellie trusts Marlene because Marlene knew Anna in the past, but Marlene doesn’t care about Ellie. The whole point of the show is that the whole world has gone mad. If a single sacrifice could save mankind, most people in the world aside from those with emotional attachments wouldn't give a child that choice. Either way, Elllie would've agreed regardless. The fact that multiple people she's cared for died from infection and she's the only one immune hits different for her. She even says that her biggest fear in life is being alone. That's also why she was indifferent to the life at the commune. She didn't want to be comfortable, she wanted to be the change.

That entire episode is the trolley problem to a tee in my opinion. But I don't think all that is ever an option for a father though, that's all i'm saying. Have a great day =)

The rapists, pedos, slavers, abusers, etc that were brewing under the surface even before the infections. What's the point of the indefinite cure that kills the kid he loves in a world that doesn't cure where the horribleness really comes from? What's the point? He's out another daughter and the world takes advantage of the sacrifice. Even if there was a cure made from her, you bet the people that really need it wouldn't get it. Alright, the job that Marlene gave Joel and Tess was to escort her Ellie to a location with fireflies that wasn't too far away, but that didn't go as plan and Tess died in the process (Loss number 1). Then Joel had to change up the original objective to take this girl cross state mostly by foot, which lead to their meeting with Sam and Henry and we know how that went (Loss number 2 and 3). Joel and Ellie finally makes it to Tommy, and Joel wanted to just let go of Ellie there but Ellie wanted to stick with Joel even though he felt that he couldn't protect her. So they continue their multi-month mission to take Ellie to the fireflies, only for Joel to get injured and the cannibal stuff to happen. And when they finally make it there, only to be separated abruptly by a damn flashbang and Joel is just told "Uh thank you, you can go now", like he didn't just lose Tess, Henry, Sam, and now Ellie? Not only that but they escorted this man out with nothing but his bag and just expected him to go on about his life, gaining absolutely nothing from the whole multi-month trip except another loss. And not to mention the cure is purely by chance, anything could happen and they may not even have the technology to properly distribute it, and even if they did, who says raiders and the rest of the world would accept such a thing? Ellie was going to die for a chance at saving a world that's too far gone for everything to magically be restored by a cure. And they did Joel dirty, so in all honesty he made the most logical decision

@RT TV, 17:04 "Did Joel make the right decision?" If you believe in consent, the answer is YES! Marlene told Joel that they didn't tell Ellie. Marlene was lying to Ellie since Boston. Marlene might not have known that Ellie was going to have to die, but she certainly knew that death was on the table. Had Marlene told Ellie everything she new back in Boston, Ellie wouldn't have gone on the journey, but that wasn't actually up to Ellie. Ellie was a POW and she was going to go where Marlene was taking her--Ellie asked for them to let her go, and they told her no. What did you think of David? Did you agree with him? David was an allegory for the Marlene and the Fireflies. He, like they made himself look like a good guy, and we steadily saw him for what he really was, a monster. He was going to take from Ellie what he wanted, whether she consented to his desires or not...that's exactly what Marlene and the Fireflies are doing in this episode. When Ellie learned of David's truth, she was discussed and had to do away with them. Ellie can't do that with the Fireflies because they lied to her and knocked her out and prepped her for a surgery she wasn't supposed to wake from. "When we are in need, he shall provide" isn't that different from "When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light." I'm a little surprised that you're okay with the what the Fireflies were doing here. What they're doing is what happened to numerous enslaved Black Americans before laws changed to prevent doctors from doing shady $#!+ like this. Modern day medicine came at the expense of people the government said weren't people. Doctors and students studying medicine needed people to practice on, and that process was made easier in the South because enslaved people were classified as people. James Marion Sims was an asshole personified. He tortured black women to hone his craft in gynecology, the practices doctors the world over uses is based on his practice. Ellie's story reminds me a lot of Henrietta Lacks. She is the women we all owe a great deal to. The He La immortal cell line is hers and it is responsible for all sorts of research from medicines, and the results of human contact to pretty much anything like chemicals, tape, cosmetics, you name it. There are over 10,000 patents to her remaining DNA. Because Henrietta grew up during Jim Crow days and when segregation was the norm, she couldn't go to the best hospitals for medical care. She had to go to one designated for Black people. Doctors their checking her out realized that her cells were different, unlike all other cells that died, Henrietta's doubled and thrived. This allowed for all sorts of testing, testing that lead to polio vaccines, cancer and AIDs treatments and dozens more. Henrietta sadly died, and she died not knowing about her unique DNA. To this day, her family still hasn't been compensated for the theft of her cells or for the billions (trillions?) made with her help. The Fireflies were going to make crazy discoveries with Ellie's mutated genes, and she never would have known about it, because she was going to be dead. Ellie's a post apocalyptic Henrietta Lacks and her genetically altered DNA is the new He La.

I think both the fireflies and Joel were in part wrong. Marlene could say Ellie would want that but she didn't give her the choice. How would she know if Ellie, given she'd know she would die, would say yes in that very moment? Anna said save Ellie and Marlene was gonna let her die wtf. I simply would want to have my own choice. Joel, imo gave her more of a choice because he brought her to the fireflies when she said they should finish the journey when he didn't want to. Now, Joel should not have lied to her after. Period but like the show runners say, love makes you do crazy things. Selfish? To some yes but some may not see it that way. If that was someone I really cared about, I'd definitely be more on Joel's side. The fireflies did lie to her lol. They should have told her and if she said no then ask her to think about it until she's older. That's her life period! Also, imagine if they did the surgery and no cure could be made. Joel wasn't gonna risk that.

We understand and sympathize with both the fireflies and Joel's motives. One wants to save the world and the other can't survive losing another daughter. But both were selfish and wrong in not giving Ellie a choice.

This was very controversial back when the game came out almost ten years ago. People were going back and forth for ages about whether Joel was a monster. More people who thought he was a monster have come around after getting older and/or becoming parents. It’s such the perfect way to end this story. I’m happy that they didn’t cop out and make a safer, more morally unambiguous ending. Back when they were play testing the game, 50% of the testers without children came out saying they hated the ending, but all of the testers with children came out saying they completely understood Joel. Some of them wanted Naughty Dog to change the ending, but they stayed resolute and stuck to their guns. Love how they were willing to take risks.

@@chrischika7026 Just because his actions are understandable, does not mean it is necessarily the correct decision or unpunishable.

@@chrischika7026 First off, I have no idea how this is a response to my comment. Secondly, I think you have to have a myopic view if you think the game itself (and not characters within the game) is condemning Joel for his actions.

@@chrischika7026 Again, the idea that Part II is condemning Joel is an L take. Neil Druckmann hasn’t even condemned Joel in interviews. Just because he sticks to the honesty of his characters and how they see the world doesn’t necessarily mean he agrees with them. Especially since he has identified with Joel multiple times over the years and talked about his father being one of the inspirations for the ending.
