Well it's mostly because we had an incompetent leader in the US who made wearing masks a political issue so all the people in his cult took itr as a political move, not a health move. Because they follow the prez blindly without question they figure if he's not wearing one, they don't need to wear one. Combine that with the fact that the baby in charge disassembled the pandemic task force that was put in place cause he thought "well what do we have you for? We haven't had a pandemic. You're not doing anything so you're fired." which is just.... it's like the bear patrol in the simpsons only backwards. So you have a virulent disease spreading across the world and people who deny it exists cause "president said so", people refusing to wear masks, people refusing to quarantine, refusing to social distance and many people who just stopped doing the precautions because they tired of it. I have literally heard people saying that they weren't going to keep up with all the precautions beccause they were tired of hearing about the virus and tired of wearing a mask and tired of "living in fear". They were sick of caring so they stopped caring because it was too inconvenient to just keep the quarantine going.

I also felt rather itchy when I saw clicker and bloaters in the game and when seeing the images from this video so I decided to find out why. Based on some quick research I did that itchiness is a sensation known as formication. (Not to be confused with fornication lol.) There are too many underlying causes to it so I could never pinpoint an exact cause for any specific person but given the circumstances of this video and the game my guess is that wee see these really creepy things happening to insects and humans alike and unconsciously think that it could happen to us a our peripheral nerf start or essentially overreact when they feel an itch as the brain thinks it's something that could potentially cause the body harm

@@Frostwolf_103 Some fans theorized that Russia was behind the cordyceps infection since the fungus can't simply just jump from insect to humans without some help. For Metro fans, there's a location known as D6 which is revealed to be a bioweapons facility. It is believed that the fungus was engineered and tested here before being deployed to the USA. The backstory of Metro says that prior to the nuclear bombings Russia was at war with USA and it's allies and this fungus was made to drastically reduce USA manpower and resources. To avoid immediate retaliation as well as to make time to prepare the Metro should it happened the fungus was deployed from South America either by Russia or their allies there. The plan worked and it took a while before USA realized what is going on and proceeded to fire every available nuclear missile they can at Russia, which at this point had been moving civilians underground and key government functions elsewhere.

I was curious of how we fell at the very beginning, as I noticed the 1st stage of infection isn't all that fast or quiet. More of a stumbling, moaning figure like that cop we find early game. Always confused me as to why the military fell at all, as they could've squatted in a base, pick off the worse quick infected, and then just cleaned up with lures and street sweepers squads. Also with how the power just cut off as it did and nobody could do a thing about it for yeeeears.

I think there are a few things you're missing in terms of the cordyceps' survivability. There were simians at the University of Easter Colorado, infected ones. I live in Colorado and the climate is pretty varied, enough that anything that evolved here might develop a resistance to both cold and hot, seeing as the temperature can widely vary here, even by the day. And as genes are plastic to the environment, it stands to reason. Not only that but it's practically right in the center of the US, meaning it has every direction in which to spread. In terms of _how_ it can spread, there was an article in the newspaper from the CDC about crops contaminated with "mold." It seems that the cordyceps can spread not just via spore or blood/bite but also through ingestion. If they can infect crops I have a feeling spores can even taint sources of water as well. Not only this but the fungus makes its hosts extremely hostile, which is one of its primary ways of spreading. I don't know, just a few little details that might close the gap between the fiction and reality of it all lol. The reality still remains that, in the modern era, something like this would have a hard time spreading like it does in TLOU. I've played enough Plague Inc. to know...

I knew it was more real with the Cordyceps but im glad you let me know we worked on something to help with organ transplants. The scary thing about this is that it can be real but glad not to that extent. As long as we don't run into no Flood Parasites or Deadspace Necromorphs we will thrive for a while. Love watching you break down biology on these type of things. My thought on this though i keep thinking what if this fungus can evolve into a much quicker fungus with more deadlier spores?? Would we be able to handle something like that with out massive quarantines or would nukes begin to fall?

If the immunity for Ellie hasnt already been explained and i just so happened to miss it i think i figured out why shes immune. Showing in the first scenes of the game that the infection has been around for 20~ years and Ellie is 14, this would mean she was born into the infection allowing her immune system to be understanding this infection since birth she may have built a permanent immunity to it and therefore unable to be killed by infection. If this has already been explained then I feel dumb but if not hopefully this will bring some understanding as to why Ellie is immune.

If that's the case then she and all the other survivors should have already been infected long before. The game itself contradicts your hypothesis. The Cordyceps fungus in the game only spreads through spores or bites from an infected animal. The spores should be able to get airborne since most fungal spores are less dense than air molecules, but for some reason you can only get infected when you go into a room with a high concentration of spores. Makes no sense. So are the spores more dense than air? Then we have to get to the way "immune" is being described in the game. It's total bs. Ellie is said to be immune but her blood samples have a high concentration of Cordyceps spores (as observed by that stupid doctor Jerry Anderson). That's just pure nonsense. If she actually was immune her tissue should have almost none of the pathogen inside and should instead have a significant concentration of antibodies if she has recently recovered. The immune system would have destroyed almost all of it. If she has a high concentration of the pathogen but isn't exhibiting symptoms, then she's just a carrier and she should be able to spread the fungus by biting others. But somehow she isn't? What pure nonsense. I called Anderson stupid because his idea of using the infected part of Ellie's brain to make a vaccine is completely unnecessary. If Ellie's blood already has a high concentration of Cordyceps spores then why not just use her blood samples to make a vaccine? Why go through the trouble of a fatal brain surgery which will take at least two hours and kill the patient, preventing Anderson from using her for further tests? I'm not shitting on The Last of Us because it is definitely some of the best 21st century literature I've seen, but please understand that the game devs have to take some creative liberties to make the story exciting. None of this zombie genre literature will ever stay faithful to biology because it simply doesn't make an exciting literary work. However this franchise is the most faithful to biology out of all the zombie genre literature.

Probably not since we use cordyceps for medicine n stuff and a human is much harder to manipulate. If cordyceps did become pathogenic to humans and that’s a big if, it wouldn’t cause the symptoms you see in the last of us. Cordyceps doesn’t cause aggression or cannibalism in insects so saying it would cause that behaviour to humans is purely fiction. This games depiction of cordyceps is really inaccurate

Quite incredible that the infection is able to get such a foothold on the human body, usually a fungus infection targets damp areas like the lungs, groin, or athletes foot. But not only is it able to have large growths inside the body, it’s able to do it while the person is still alive and healthy. The fact it can survive a mammals immune system and act the same as it does in an insect makes this one of the hardiest things on the planet. All hail our fungus overlords.

A possible counter to the cold-weather obstacle could be that the fungus uses the Human body itself as a sort of thermal regulator, raising the body's metabolism and burning fat to keep the fungus at an optimal temperature, or lowering activity and steering the body towards cool damp areas in extreme heat on the opposite end of the spectrum.
