The strawberries scene is significant is this is Frank showing Bill he can be a provider. My belief is most of their relationship (at least at the beginning) is based on Bill being the provider/protector, mostly likely being the one acquiring supplies, food and maintaining their security. When the balance of power in a relationship shifts toward one of shared responsibility, that encourages growth in people and strengthens the bond. Just my two cents.

I saw some people mad because they think it’s encouraging, you know what. Reading comprehension is at an all-time low. We need to go back to tell, don’t show. No wonder, normie TV is usually full of exposition dumps and music telling you how to feel. Lol.

In the game, Ellie found some gay porn magazines in Bill's home and Bill also called Frank his "partner". But we had no backstory to Bill or Frank in the game and it gave the producers freedom to sort of make up whatever they wanted to ☺️ I cried a lot during this lol

Also, one more thing about their dynamic, which I thing is the main theme of this episode, is "quantity of life vs quality of live". Bill wanted to survive another day while Frank wanted to fill with life however many days they get. That's why the strawberries scene is so important. Frank exchanged something that would help them survive longer for something that was essentially a luxury, and that's the moment bill finally gets it.

@StruckByBelz, @16:12 This might have already been pointed out by now, but in the event that it wasn't, Bill and Frank's story was told in the game and it was pretty clear that they were a couple. That said, there story in the game IS quite different than this one. Their story in the game is tragic and ends in disaster, but not in the HBO version of the story. I think this version is so much better and fulfilling, personally. 16:52 I don't think it's just the song, but the entire day. Frank asked for something to eat, and Bill went out of his way to be very, very hospitable. Bill let Frank shower for as long as he wanted, gave him a brand new pair of clothes and then served him a 3 star Michelin lunch with a glass of fine wine--who does that! Frank would have been happy to get just a sandwich! Bill didn't stop there, he broke out the fine china and silverware too! Bill toss his hair to the side didn't go unnoticed by Frank either. Bill was an unhappy man who wasn't accepted in society; hence, his survivalist nature. We can see that he came from a well off family and was given the best life--my man is an every man who can fix an entire town, fortify it, maintain automobiles and machinery for 20 years, is good with PCs, plays the piano and sings well and cooks like a pro! The only thing Bill does know how to do is live because all his life he's been trying to survive in a world and atmosphere his parents raised him. Sure, the US has come a long way with equality for gay couples, but that's recent, not 2003 recent, and things are still pretty rough for that community now. Imagine how hard it was for this closeted man in his 50s. Frank, obviously, had a very different life from Bill's; he was free to be who he was. And it looks like he knew who Bill was before Bill did, and Linda Ronstadt's song helped as it helped channel Bill's true feelings, which he kept tightly guarded up to this point. 18:36 Yes, and no. Do you recall Frank looking Bill's home over while Bill cooked? Frank noticed that Bill wasn't taking care of his home. Bill doesn't care about these things. He cares about having a home, but dusting and the like are not essential to survival. Frank doesn't just want to survive, he wants to live! Bill won't cut his grass, trim the bushes or prune his trees. He won't even put a new coat of paint on the place! Frank wants them to enjoy the comforts Bill is able to provide them. It's been three years, and the two of them are living lives people everywhere elsewhere would kill for. Unlike everyone else in the world that constantly wonders where they're going to sleep that night or where their next meal is going to come from or if they'd be okay in the hours to come, Bill and Frank knew the answers to these questions. Bill was never not safe. He was safe from the start of all this to the end. Frank lived in the hell that befell the world for four years--he knew what he had lost, and he was shocked to see that Bill still had these things, and I think it saddened him to see that Bill let these simple comforts go, but also realized that Bill never really had the chance to live either, so of course he wouldn't know what he was missing out on, which is why I think Frank wanted him to experience living, as he had; it's one of the few things Frank can give Bill. How to live and how to love were things Bill never learned until now. 23:03 That's got to be hard for someone society shunned--Bill would have been a Trumper--he has a "don't tread of me flag" in his basement and he was into conspiracies theories. We saw how he was around Joel and Tess; he's not sociable. His argument with Frank about resource management is another reason why Bill wasn't open to that. Bill didn't take on more than he could handle. He built a fortress that would sustain him for the rest of his life. Yes, he let Bill in, but he wasn't moving beyond that. Had he let others in, different opinions would have been the end of his home, I imagine and food would have been an issue, as someone would surely abuse the comfort Bill's fortress gave them. People would gradually stop eating to survive and start eating for pleasure and start indulging in that supply of food. You know Bill cataloged everything and made meals that would not jeopardize their supplies during terrible seasons and winter. A town full of people would have been too much for him to manage. 24:51 Craig Mazin, the co-creator of this series, said that they didn't actually decide on a decease for Frank, but he did confirm that Frank either suffers from MS or ALS ='( The guy who was fit and healthy for much of this story is the guy hurting late in life, damn. 33:33 I don't disagree, but when you consider EVERYONE else in this new world, this is a happy love story that ended on their terms, so it is a happy ending. Bill's fortress never fell. He and Frank lived a full and satisfying life together, something very few couples in this world can say. 36:24 No they didn't, but the dust and food on the table would suggest that not a lot of time passed. Their bodies would still be in the process of decomposing, the early stages. This was a great story, one that'll likely shape how this story ends. I can't wait for the next one! Another fine reaction =]

We’re all born sinful and imperfect and utterly unworthy of grace-you, me, and everybody else. When you feel the urge to speak down to and about others and you spout off about how wrong and evil everyone else is while you live in a Godly way, that’s not the Spirit moving through you. Bill in the game was gay. We find that out through hints and breadcrumbs, but We never saw frank in the game until they stumble upon his dead body before finding the truck battery. They changed the backstory up a bit though, which I think is better than what they did in the game, but his characters purpose stayed the same. Bill was just a side character to help Joel and Ellie get a truck and battery and to teach Joel a moral lesson on how not to be(in the game) and how to be(in the show). Also this was 2003 before gay marriage and all that was a thing and before meeting frank, he could never be himself, he was most likely a loner before the apocalypse too spending most of his time in his bunker prepping and hoping the world would end someday. Then he realized his greater purpose after meeting frank. To protect, just like Joel.

much of this we didnt see in the game. we only learned the story of BIll and Frank via letters we found in the environment. they also changed alot. In game we meet Bill, and he helps us fight and get a car. We encounter Frank, but he has hung himself (suicide) after getting bit, only leaving Bill with a letter. Bill explains to Joel that Frank was his "partner", so we knew Bill and Frank was a couple. I think the change they made for television was masterfully done. Bill was always into men. funny how he found his purpose in a post apocalypse : ) which i like, that they show us that its possible to thrive and live in such times. B and F really were the ones that made it.

The song played on the radio at the end was the same one bill and frank played on the piano at the start. The way I understood the piano scene was Frank said “I know” because he could tell that Bill was gay, like Bill was saying the song wasn’t about a girl for him, and I think there was subtle emphasis on the “girl” and that’s why Frank made an advance. Then the bedroom scene Bill says he had done it before with a girl, I think he’s recalling back to a time before he knew he preferred boys.

For what it's worth, I don't think Frank was "giving up" when he asked for the pills at the end. Rather, he was just accepting that there were no longer doctors around to treat his steadily-worsening illness (probably cancer or MS, given his joke about MRIs and mentioning it's incurable). And so he decided he would rather go out on his own terms, while he was still awake enough and functional enough to fully enjoy his final day with Bill. Nothing hopeless or defeated about it - just realistic and pragmatic, given the world that they're living in.

They were both gay in the game already, but the difference is in the game, Bill didn't give in to Frank's will to not just survive, but live. So, in the game, they end up resenting each other, hating each other and finally breaking up, Frank tried to leave the city but didn't get far before being bitten and hanging himself to avoid turning. Bill still resents and hates Frank when you found his old partner's corpse, and there's a letter next to it, the corpse is indeed Frank; and the letter's content shows Frank was still mad at Bill too. As to why Bill slept with a girl once : many gay people live in families where it's shamed upon, so they kinda convince themselves they're straight, with more or less success, but if you're not into women, well, you're not, you can't fake it forever, so those relationships rarely last long. The fate Bill and Frank have in the tv show is sooo much better than the break up and Frank dying that we have in the game... The only loss is the funny banter between Bill and Ellie that we don't get here... but the game is still there for that ! Cause basically Bill shows Joel in the game "that's how you end up if you close yourself to feeling anything", which Joel is doing. In the show, the message is different but achieving the same goal : "look what can happen if you allow yourself to feel something again". Which starts to shift something in Joel regarding his view of Ellie in both the tv show and the game. Then, after all that, in both cases they leave Lincoln (that city) in a car, listening to music.

If someone can't see past the fact that these are two men to appreciate the beauty of their love, then all hope is lost for them. And part of me feels pity for those people, and another part of me wants every movie and tv show to have gay couples just so they can't watch anything ever again. I'm all out of sympathy.

They were always gay Bill was closeted. Additionally they were gay in the game but they never went into detail about their love. The entire love story was different than what transpired in the game.

I know so many people are still moronically h0m0ph0bic nowadays and can’t understand why they’d introduced two gay characters into a backstory that has ‘nothing to do with the game” but those same people also fail to understand how even if there was an apocalypse GAY PEOPLE WOULD STILL BE PART OF IT REGARDLESS and not to mention just as much as people complain about homosexual scenes I can do just as much and MORE complaining about boring heterosexual scenes so idk why this episode got so much hate. However, THANK YOU GUYS for being so open as USUAL and to share some more light and personal opinion, I really loved how this episode focused on an emotional love story between two OLDER GAY men which we don not see much depiction of as much as younger generations of LGBTQ+ rep when it comes to television. So, this was a TYPE of divine love story we do not get to see much as. I loved this episode and I’m gonna keep defending it by every thread on my sweater. Thanks for reacting to it and not being so biased or hateful because truly it’s astonishing how people think we’re supposed to care if they "dropped this show' after ONE episode displaying affection and compassion between two people in an apocalypse for crying out loud. It was a MOVING story of showing how not everything in an apocalypse show has to be so intense ALL THE TIME because there are some people who WILL and HAVE lived their last days only loving each other away from everyone else bc no one else matters at that moment. 🏳‍🌈✨

Episode was aight but this shit is getting overhyped praise everywhere to where it’s kinda annoying. I honestly thought it was the worst episode of the season so far and we’re only 3 episodes in. Pls don’t think I’m shitting on the episode, it was good but not to the levels I’ve been constantly reading about online. Without going there, we all know the real reason it’s getting so much love.

Or what about just a love story surviving in the apocalypse with some good acting? Honestly you didn't have to go there but you did. Why not just watch it for the good story and good actors? Maybe that's why it's getting some high praise everywhere

@tkjay83

I wouldn't call it pointless when in the end, Bill left everything to Joel & Tess (if she was still alive) and pretty much the truck to move the story forward. That's a pretty big deal. I for one, loved how Bill pretty much took over the whole town and looted everything important for him to survive.

@@apacolypz11 correct me if I'm wrong but the point of The Last Of Us is or at least should be the relationship between Joel and Ellie and I'll say it again instead we get an hour long backstory of some side characters never seen again... @apacolypz11

@@nacktmulle10249 The point of Last of Us, is what are we living for? Are we just surviving? Is there a greater point to it all? Again you missed it, it is not JUST about Ellie and Joel. The story mostly deals with the core theme of restored humanity. The point of this episode beyond the many layers, is Bill's humanity was restored and his life was filled with LOVE. Again I guess you missed it because it wasn't about Ellie, Joel or Tess. Having something eternal and someone to protect outside of your own survival. Connecting and building something greater outside of your little comfort zone. I can continue and go into greater detail......No I didn't miss your point. Your point was this was a wasted hour and was pointless.

This side story needed be integrated into the zombie shit. Not just put into a single episide unrealated to anything going on. There was no segway. It was out of nowhere and grinded the story to a halt. Bring them into the storyline properly , let them bloom then kill them off later instead.
