I think that's why this intro is just damn good, it tell us things that will most likely happen in real life while you're in home in the middle of an outbreak and the only thing you can do is watch the TV and expect the worst. They're actually slime molds (phycerum polycephalum). They're not fungi, they're protists (eukaryotic single celled organisms). The end clip that referenced "rising" did show sporangium spores from fungi but only that scene showed actual fungi. Notice they had ice crystallization too for effect.
