The Last Public Execution/Guillotining In France

Throughout the centuries in France, an execution device known as the guillotine became famous. It was the slanted bladed device of death that took the heads off the King of France Louis XVI and his Queen Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. But shortly before the Second World War, the executions using the guillotine were still being performed in public. The final public guillotining in France saw a brutal German serial killer, Eugen Weidmann make his way to the device.
Weidmann was a man who had taken the lifes of a number of people and robbed them of their wealth, but he was arrested following a shootout. Because of the nature of his crimes, his execution was performed in public outside of a prison in Versailles, but officials did not take into account the fact that many witnesses had cameras.

On 17 June 1939, convicted serial killer Eugen Weidmann was publicly executed by guillotine in Versailles, France after murdering and robbing six people.

Dr. Guillotine invented this device as a humanitarian method of execution. After its widespread usage in La Terreur during the French Revolution caused such public terror that Dr. Guillotine's family changed their name so as not to have any connection to it.

Wrong, Dr Guillotin never invented this device, in fact he had no skills whatsoever in engineering. Dr Guillotin was a member of the parliament, representative of the Tiers état, in charge of finding a new more human way of executing people. The machine, the Guillotine, was invented by a French military doctor ( I forgot the name). The Machine ended up being called Guillotine by Dr Guillotin’s political adversaries.

The writings of one Dr Beaurieux, from 1905, make for fascinating if macabre reading. He attended the execution of one Henri Languille, and recorded his direct experience of the executed convict’s face showing signs of responding upon being spoken to. No less than twice. The man looked directly and deliberately at the doctor, who mentioned that this sort of thing was apparently common knowledge to those involved in handling the bodies of the decapitated .

Luckily, the sun was still too high - then safe - for Christopher, a young British aristocrat of Transylvanian origin, who had come among the crowd to witness a killing known for its shedding of hemoglobin, something of which the young Lee would soon become a fine connoisseur, but only at nightfall...
