8:19 - The plane flyover was actually tested in a few different locations, including by the first junkyard building, in the junkyard itself, and after passing under the bridge earlier, and _nobody_ noticed it in those locations. Gamers quite literally _never_ look up, so it just lead to a handful of people hearing the plane, but not seeing it, with everyone else missing it entirely (even across multiple playthroughs) It was actually on the verge of being completely scrapped, till it's current position was tested with more success.

It’s funny that you say that the Last Stand is not that much of a challenge. When the Campaign released the Finale was almost impossible to beat on solo expert realism, since the horde would not stop when you had to collect the gascans. It was at least 3 times harder. They thankfully reduced the amount of zombies during the finale after some feedback, however this campaign is still not that good.
@D_YellowMadness4 ай бұрын

Honestly I actually think this campaign has a really memorable rural locale to it. Is that wholly unique? No, but many of the actual locations stand out really well to me, especially the old cobblestone bridge, and the mill that runs along the creek, and that small village before the safehouse. It's something a bit unique about this map that I always liked, felt very old timey. Too bad most of what I like about this campaign is just that its so damn short. You really can't appreciate the maps identity, when it ends as abruptly as it does.

The original idea for the update was to just have a small update that ported the missing L4D1 survival maps to L4D2. It wasn't even going to have any announcement beyond the usual forum post/blogpost. The deadline kept being pushed back though (Due to Valve prioritizing work on HL:A), so additional time meant more stuff could be worked on, added, and tested out to provide more content for more players.

Last stand has the crash course syndrome but lacks the hit moments like bridge bombing on the parish, the plane crash on dead air, the church tolls in death toll or even the cannon in crash course. Map lacks any panic events, crescendos and only has glorified survival. The chapter could use 2 more chapters. (Lord Gabe please bless us with anything)

I haven't played The Last Stand campaign since the update came out because I'm a sucker for custom campaigns, so I can't speak to how it plays for me. However, I do play custom campaigns that are supposed to "improve" the originals, such as Dead Center Rebirth (for Dead Center), Sunrise Carnival (for Dark Carnival), Hard Rain Downpour (for Hard Rain), The Parish Facelift (for The Parish), and, relevant to this discussion, The Last Daylight (for The Last Stand). The Last Daylight is a custom campaign based on The Last Stand, serving as a sequel of sorts. As the name suggests, it takes place during the daytime, featuring the L4D2 survivors after the events of the original have already occurred (e.g., the plane crash and the subsequent forest fire). The biggest difference between it and the original is the addition of new paths for players to navigate and some altered sequences. Here's a quick rundown of each chapter on Normal difficulty (SPOILER ALERT!): - CHAPTER 1 - At the start, players can either navigate through the river or cross the bridge, with the latter option rewarding them with a Hunting Rifle. Similar choices apply when heading to the junkyard. Once there, players activate the crane, but it shuts down, causing the load it was holding to drop and triggering both the Crescendo and Gas Scavenge events. From there, players must collect two gas cans to reactivate the crane, which clears the path to the saferoom more quickly than in the original campaign. The rest of the chapter plays out similarly to the original. - CHAPTER 2 - The first third of this chapter is almost identical to the original. The main difference comes when players reach the finale area. Before starting the finale, they go through a damaged storage room with a radio inside. Depending on which characters are chosen, interacting with the radio triggers a conversation with either Virgil or the helicopter pilot, which is cut short when the radio breaks down mid-sentence. This becomes important later. Afterward, players head to the lighthouse roof and activate the signal flare to start the finale sequence. It begins with a holdout Crescendo Event, followed by a Tank fight. Once the Tank is defeated, the Gas Scavenge sequence begins. Unlike the original campaign, players must now collect two gas cans to fill a barrel inside a storage room near the pier. Afterward, they destroy the barrel with a gunshot, triggering a fight against two Tanks. Once that's done, the rescue sequence begins. Depending on which radio dialogue was triggered earlier, players will either return to the lighthouse for the helicopter or head to the pier for the boat. I highly recommend you to check the custom campaign out for yourselves. Although it doesn't have as many memorable set pieces to the original, but the changes it makes is worth playing, at least for me.

I think this map was a bit of an afterthought in the Last Stand Update. I believe it was said that the Last Stand Update was intended to be a survival only focused update and sorta fleshed out the last stand to be it's own campaign, albeit a short one, so there would be stuff for campaign players as well. I was really hyped for this update and I liked it, plus it was sort of a miracle that this game got an update at all. I wish Valve would give the community another chance at making an update for Left 4 Dead 2 again, however unlikely that may be.
@spamhands69934 ай бұрын
In my opinion, The Last Stand also heavily needed another level for pacing reasons. For as short as it is, it was so unrelenting that I was exhausted from being beaten so much on Advanced, on the first level. I wish they cut up the first level, so you don't have to redo ALL of the first part of level one, just to retry the hold out, or worse you die on the way to level two. This is also why I personally don't agree with NormStorm's video on hardest campaigns, in TLS portion. I don't find a campaign that mentally exhausts me, from being constantly pushed back and widdled down to be fun. It just makes me want to quit, play a different campaign on the harder modes, or worse, quit playing L4D2 on that session. You can honestly convince me the director was either turned all the way up or turned off and just spams zombies on this map. It also doesn't help that being disappointing is the Last Stand update as a whole. I don't blame anyone in particular, but I heard development was a nightmare, with logistical fumbles like everything on a google doc instead of sheets, Jaiz being moved from PR guy to director, and a lot of in-fighting to the point of it kicking out a developer that overhauled survivor bots to have significantly better pathing. The bots would've followed you if you jumped down from the bridge in Dead Center finale to the scafolding, that sort of pathing. It also didn't help that the update broke so many mods, over a decade old, and were not supported by the original creator as they moved on or had IRL responsibilites.

Wait they kicked out a guy that tried making survivor bots better?! That's such a BS and nonsense

There's a lot of incorrect rumors. For example, people like to tout that I was in charge, just because I'm one of the more forward-facing people in the community, when in reality I did a bit of everything. There was a lot of flexibility in general, so while everyone had their own specialties, it's not like anyone was bottlenecked into a specific role; I myself did a lot of testing, organizing, video editing, level design, and creative design, just to name a few things. The teamwork did take some time to build up, since a lot of people didn't know eachother at first, but overall the co-operation was pretty good, and there weren't any issues that you wouldn't also encounter in other studios, groups, or teams. It's never smooth sailing when working in a group, especially not a large one of 30+ people with different ideas, expectations, and mindsets, but overall it went well, with detailed notes being taken to improve things even more in the future.

I disagree with removing the scavenger hunt from the finale, and the reason is simple: how many campaigns do the survivors escape without other people being their escape route across both left 4 dead games? Not many. The only ones are Crash Course and the Sacrifice for L4D1, and Dead Center, the Passing and the Last Stand for L4D2. That’s it. It makes sense for the lighthouse to stop working, because they just strolled up to it and turned it on. And besides, while it is padding for time (in a perfectly logical way, might I add), no official campaign hasn’t done a 2 part holdout that isn’t “kill every zombie that comes at us!” Followed immediately by “OUR RIDE IS HERE! HAUL ASS!!!”
@moneygrab6104 ай бұрын
I think scavenge finales add a lot to the game despite the consensus being staunchly against them. You get to explore the finale area instead of holing up in one spot. It makes sense that the characters would need to create a way to escape rather than just signaling for some passersby every time.

The thing that I agree with the most, for some reason, is when you say it should have been set at day. The l4d1 survivors always have their campaigns set at night or it’s blocked out my clouds/smoke. In fact, Blood Harvest’s ending set piece is the military APC riding over the hill and into a SUNSET, the first hint of sun we see in the l4d1 campaign. The ending could have been set at the break of dawn or with the sun out at the last stand.

I have to say the one thing I really did like about the last stand? Was the lighthouse set piece. Personally I feel like there hasn’t been a finale set that really used the scale and verticality to that degree. Just from a pure survival standpoint point players will scale the light house and hold out up there. It’s a good feeling, because it brings a sense of urgency to climb up during the waves of zombies that come at you. It’s not my favorite, I don’t think it’s the worse, that belongs to cold stream.

The safehouse from chapter 2 is beautiful, it feels so real, so warm between a gloomy blue cold place! but otherwise, as you said.. there is not much more memorable things.. I thought you would get rewards for exploring the radio tower....i thought there was a quest going on there? i played this campaign blind, I finished in realism expert in one go recently.. and.. yeeee just for the achievement.. I really think Valve does not give a damn, they could put a third chapter where the boat stops on a dock full of little stores and a Big market? I feel like the last stand, is Designed to be on versus. Since most the last stand update, is Giving infected way more spawns, on all the maps. And nerfing or patching the shortcuts, or tricks, survivors use to get through maps quicker in versus. Because the reason why There is a random scavenge part, on The last stand chapter 2, is because Most left 4 dead 1 survival maps, sucks in versus, people will change maps instantly nearly 99% of the time, Because Of how melees made commons way easier to deal with in versus. And also The survival maps in Left 4 dead 1 maps are really open meaning infected have almost no spawns to attack the survivors, And the tank is in a massive disadvantage, Since in versus they have to rely on physic objects, which are not 100% accurate. The only good left 4 dead 1 survival maps in versus, is No mercy chapter 5, and crash course chapter 2, and that’s about it, Because no mercy has 1 shot death areas. And crash course requires you to move, a way longer distance to start the survival. And had to activate the generator, 2 times. So the last stand, Biggest praise I can give, is It forces the survivors, to move around in these survival areas, in versus. and not camp at 1 spot. Because last stand chapter 2, would suck in versus, if they did not have a scavenge part. And the last stand where infected have bush areas to spawn. I think is completely wasted. This would have been good for the other maps, that have corn fields, or bushes blocking the survivor vision. But in the last stand in versus from what I played they are nearly useless. Due to this trick or glitch, where ghost infected can jump and spawn, and keep their ghost speed, to get towards the survivors, Way quicker. If there were significant less roof areas the infected can take advantage on, maybe these areas can be useful in this campaign, but it’s a huge wasted idea. Also chapter 2 on top of the watch tower, they have a radio that will instantly call a common horde, where I’m convinced they added that, to give people a reason to vote kick players. The other wasted idea, is you can use a melee weapon to break, way larger doors or gates down, In last stand chapter 1 they have a secret area to destroy a massive wooden door. Also the last stand for me, is the most balanced in versus for me, Since it combats and punishes rushers, or B hoppers, Because it’s the longest to speedrun for a reason. For me last stand is, barely around a 8/10 me for me, since It’s mostly designed for versus, or trying to get versus people, to Not vote skip 1 campaign, when doing survival type maps, Since in versus, it last around a hour, And not ridiculously short. Nothing amazing, but It did improve versus a ton for me, in the last stand update.

Still pisses me off that this fuckin update broke like all of the old menu mods And honestly the counter strike weapons are kinda out of place and balanced poorly We've had ways to add them into campaigns for ages and they've always kinda sucked and i hate them being forced into the base game
@White9274 ай бұрын
This is the reason why I hate it, while there are good changes but a lot of them were unneccessary.

ppl see this map as easy, but for a bunch of clown with eyes issue like us, this take us 12 hrs, each section is 6hrs long for 2 days to beat this thing on Expert definitely a official campaign we will never touch again

Ngl when The Last stand dlc was anounced i was hyped for it because, i thought since it originally is a part of death toll it would like a alternative ending to it while playing trhought half of death toll again before splitting off again to a new part of the map instead of the orignal ending to death toll , but i guesss its better then nothing if what we got or at least something cool that was attempted to tie in the last stand into the story more as a what if lol Nice video as well 👌

Amazing video, it’s hilarious knowing half of a video on the last stand is its super boring finale, well done guys… to think with how many people worked on the update we would get something great, but we got this sorry excuse for a workshop map.

8:22 They should've had the plane hit the tip of crane, causing the shipping container to fall on its own. I don't understand the reasoning for them making the crane require two presses.

I like the aesthetic this map has around the crashsite and the beginning of the 2nd act, wish there was a full act with more of that inbetween the first chapter and the finale

The Last Stand has better pacing and polish than Cold Stream while being more memorable and ambitious than Crash Course. It's good, actually.

Also on expert realism, the amount of infected just outside the starting area will drain all your ammo before you even get past the river.

Its definetly not one of the better ones, but I still think its fine to be apart of the main levels. Its just comparing it to the really good main levels its eh, but still fun. I still think having a short, really hard map is good
@minor_change51164 ай бұрын
I think it would’ve been better paced if it the finale was set up with the initial hold out then the gas cans Then it ends, having to fight another holdout then 2 tanks at once was too boring I ain’t no map maker but what if the boat arrived and the boat was out of gas and the survivors had to fill it up for it to end and to make it difficult Infinite commons and a tank at all times The huge area would make this fair (probably more if you remove the cars)

I think last stand should focus on unique ways of survival and not making the area longer. Tbh so many areas that are so potential to be a survival. I mean we can see the 4 original campaign from the first l4d. The areas every chapter are small distant but so many memorable panic events. The bridge at the beginning could be good as panic attack segment. The crashsite could be good area for dual tank showdown with less horde spawn. Or a nearsite cathedral, mansion, or a zoo that could be a good gas can segment or other panic events which could be an extended chapter. Gas cans are so unnecessary at the finale, we have to deal 3 to 4 tanks and now gas cans with infinite horde is too much to do especially the lighthouse is wide with alot of horde spawns and special infected. Making the finale impossible to beat. Overall last stand feels bland and repetative segment same as death toll. Hopefully they can justify adding extended chapters since this campaign was made only 6 months before the release

My least favorite maps are the last stand and cold stream, they just kinda bland in my opinion
@AHSL-000H4 ай бұрын
I believe if there was some sort of reward factor to the idea of a survival finale then at least it would be partly justified.; A more deliberate and involved portion of the campaign with more chapters that ultimately led to a satisfying "last stand". But in this case it seems rushed and pooped out by the Valve monolith.

It's like the update had more a focus on survival as a whole more than anythin else. Sure they added quality of life fixes, bug fixing etc, but most of the update was about survival and only survival. The achievements for em are crazy, grindy and tiring as hell for the amount of time you need to spend on em (yes i got all of em) On the map side, i wouldn't mind if the map was short, but why makin another holdout event? we did one literally the map early, there's no need for two of them on the same campaign, plus for some demonic reasons it's probably the most annoying scavenger finale i've ever played with zombies spawning very close to the gas tanks in little groups, making it very annoying to bring all the cans to the end of the hill. But ehi atleast ye can do the funni lil death screams while droppin down the cliff lel

I thought it was a pretty alright campaign, but too short, it's got nice lighting at points, and besides, it was a free update, can't argure with that. Edit: Oh I loved the plane plying over at the start of the first level, only to find it crashed later on in said level, but I guess that fact kinda just flew right over me 😉

One of my favorites. Best use of the _ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WATER!_ voiceline ever. Playing it with mods though required me to set the heapsize from the default 256mb to the maximum 512mb, as well as delete a couple highpoly car models to keep the audio from melting, because sourcespaghettijank™ You'll see the occasional source ERROR on the road, but it's better than having to fight through the mother of all stutters while simultaneously deaf.
@dildofaggins69614 ай бұрын
That map has horrible optimization and crashes that it never plays well for me every time I play it. The last times I tried to play it the framerate tanks and the audio gets bugged out. It is a very nice looking map but it's held back by said bad optimization.

I think the community would be much more forgiving to this update if it came a year after l4d2 was released as at this point most players got used to how l4d2 works.
