My husband just got a hearing aid, he's had hearing loss since he was a boy, about 30 years. He first was tested by a community health center, and they said a hearing aid wouldn't help him. We changed health insurance and they retested him and after many appointments he finally got a hearing aid for about 1,500. He can hear much better, but it does hurt his ear sometimes and sometimes all the noise is overwhelming.

Total real cost ? A couple of bucks. The USA is ruled by bankers that suck up all of your money and give nothing back. When will people over there realize that what is done in Europe can be done in the US ?? Our medical care is free, our roads are in good condition, soil and water are healthy, all waste is recycled. I've noticed in the last year especially that I am having an extremely hard time making out direct conversation with someone if there is ANY background noise. 😐 Eating out, in the grocery store, at work, and now even if there's not too much noise but people are wearing masks - forget it. I can not understand what they are saying. I get really frustrated asking people to repeat it again and again. If I have to ask 3x and I still don't have a clue I give up. Dr. Frank Lin (John Hopkins) (@~6:10) is working for common good to reduce cost for users. But Chris McCormick Starkey, (@~8:50) chief marketing guy will do/say whatever to protect the hearing aid exclusivity: "concern is people trying to self diagnose, people trying to self program." That's bull. With apps available for self hearing tests, the programming can easily be set via Bluetooth: fit the device, listen for a very quiet a tone at a first frequency, if not heard, incrementally increase the level of tone until you hear it. Increase frequency to next tone, repeat. When complete the system can store the program to adjust the frequency response to compensate for you personal loss. Just like in the audiologist office. Voila 2/3 of cost eliminated. If curious, search apps for sound analysis & you'll find many apps. The trick is to couple the app to the psap transducers/amps that play the tones so that the result is a closed loop that becomes a closed loop with your personal hearing. Similarly, noise cancellation tech is already available & used in consumer products.

You are waiting for the FDA to finish finalizing the rules and regulations for sale of these devices. Aside from to usual slowness of government bureaucracy there is the very difficult matter of categorizing which of the new technologies can be defined as devices that need not have and Audiology clinician involved in the dispensing of the new hearing aid definitions and which of those devices are simply personal sound amplification devices that need not have a clinician involved and can be sold over the counter. Pretty similar process to that of making sausages or law. Everyone wants a great final product, few are brave enough to see the process through to the end.

ok are there hearing aids that people can actually NOT SEE that you're wearing them (EVEN if they're next to you looking inside your ear)? And if there are, are they as effective as the awful ones that everyone can see? And how do you take them off and put back on yourself (like when you are out eg at a bar, club, restaurant etc) without embarrassing yourself by making a spectacle of the event? And how long do the batteries last on these? And, are they waterproof (like swim underwater waterproof)? The above questions are pretty much what everyone wants answers to as everyone with hearing loss wants the same things: To hear, and no one else to know they're wearing hearing aids, and for us to be able put them on/take them off easily and fast, and not to risk water accidents/damages, and to need to recharge them as least often as possible. ;) I hope all these magical drugs that claim will restore hearing loss (like the FX-322) will actually be available soon (but my the looks of things nothing's really moving in that front)... :(

Why in the world would anyone want to spend 8+ years in University to study audiology to learn how to properly treat hearing loss??? I say we run all those Doctors out of business so everyone can wear over the counter PSAPs.
