You actually accidentally hit the nail on the head about what was wrong with Love & Thunder. You mentioned his lazy approach, his comedy style, focus on youth mindset, and spontaneity, but I just realized it’s maybe the drama that fell short in Love & Thunder. He thinks (or marvel thought) that it’s the humor that makes his movies great. But at the core, it’s actually the heart and drama underneath the humor that really sells it. But maybe he wasn’t suited to deal with the seriousness of Lady Thor or Gorr and leaned more into the zany. It didn’t work. Yes there was drama but it didn’t hit like his other movies. Which is crazy because Thor, Lady Thor, & Gorr were prime characters for something with emotional weight. It would’ve been a great opportunity for him to explore that. But instead…we got “eat my hammer”, uncle Zeus, and annoying goats

He's at his best when he nails the comedy and humor of life... but has a little darkness or emotional weight underneath. Jojo Rabbit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Thor Ragnarok are all excellent examples. Boy and Jojo rabbit are the only films I’ve seen of his where he is able to tackle two totally different tones in a movie and not make them feel disjointed. I know he says he did little research for Jojo Rabbit, but there is one note that hints maybe he did more. In the movie, imaginary H*tler is seen eating meat and smoking cigarettes. In real life, H*tler was vegan and very anti-smoking. This may make Waititi’s claim of little research true, but it works in the film so well that it actually shows research. This smoking, meat-eating image of H*tler shows us that Jojo has near no knowledge of H*tler, which shows his deep misunderstanding of his hero. (Note: censored H*tler bc I don’t know if YT would hide my uncensored comment or not)

Hitler certainly wasn't vegan, and he wasn't even vegetarian. There are loads and loads of witnesses claiming he ate meat. The man ate eggs every day. According to his personal chef, his favourite meal was stuffed dove. Goebbels was the person who spread propaganda that he didn't smoke, drink alcohol, eat meat or "enjoy women" and thus was the ideal leader because he solely focused on the needs of the nation and ignored his own needs for joy. My guess is, he really didn't smoke, I do not know about the alcohol aspect, but he was a true junkie (amphetamines and opiates).

I've started to wonder if Love and Thunder was a bit of a protest on his part. Other directors like James Gunn confirmed that none of them had any say in what happened to the characters during Infinity War/Endgame, they were just left to pick up the pieces after the fact. Ragnarok was about Thor finding his inner strength and becoming the king and leader of his people, even though he lost his father, best friends and arguably his sister. But more notably, he lost his weapon. He learned that he needed no weapons, he was more powerful without. So what's the first thing he does in Infinity War? Obsesses over a weapon. It undermines a key point of his character arc. Then in Endgame, he obsesses over Mjolnir again. Aaaaand has lost his strength and leadership and just peaces out. His entire growth, just kinda thrown in the bin by the Russos, then Waititi is told to suck it up and make Love and Thunder. So... he does what they did to him. His character is completely altered off screen, all the changes they made are thrown out, and now he's utterly obsessed with and powerless without Mjolnir. Thinking about it like that, I can see why he made the choices he did. His entire film was undone, and then he was told to carry on. I think it's why Guardians 3 wasn't as good as it should have been, as it couldn't either continue as before OR allow the characters to come to terms with Gamora's death.

It's ok there children's stories for young boys and young men who haven't carved out there place in the world yet, these stories will always resonate with h them like star wars did for me especially return of the Jedi, but that movie doesn't mean what it used to to me, cuz i hope i have grown emotionally as a person compared to my 10yr old self. Jojo Rabbit was really good. The problem is that in most of his projects, he lacks vision, he lacks interest. He is a like a guy who is doing this for money and as a way to have fun. Fun part is fine but art needs to channelized in a proper way. It is evident from Thor films. The first one, he admitted that he made it for money cause he was struggling financially and when he read about Thor, he hated the comics and made up his own things on screen in Ragnarok. That was his luck that it did good but unfortunately, this statement becomes relevant when you watch Thor 4 again, which was a disaster. He doesn't like the character, has no interest to make it remarkable and then he makes it a joke. He came out with a Sports film and has no idea what he has done. In all of his breakdown videos of his films, he has no idea what he has done and what was his thought process. While other filmmakers will tell you what they had in mind, how they wanted to present it and also, will tell you about the fun they experienced. So yeah, he is lazy.

Did you see anything else than Thor 4? I remember when Thor 3 came out everyone loved it. Not to mention a movie like jojo rabbit which is a straight up masterpiece

@@orian8837 I watched all of his movies to see what the hype was. Just seems like a bad actor who got lucky and gets to write himself into everything tbh. JoJo Rabbit is decent but it's hardly the next Peter Rabbit.
