He had me sold when he said "My job is not film-making. My job is to be creative. My job is to express myself and to share my ideas and my point of view.". This came off to be such a profound truth, and it's so universal if you think about it. Most of us spend our lives finding that perfect job, perfect title, that elusive thing called "calling" - and all that we should rather be doing is just be ourselves at whatever we do.

I agree with how he presents creativity as a matter of perception and expression through the lens of obsession. If you can't become obsessed with your work, your passion won't come through, and you just won't grow as you would otherwise.
@Eowynnofrohan5 жыл бұрын
I just be obsessed with my idea for a story, I've been writing versions of it since 2011, sometimes the stories takes off, sometimes they turn into nothing and I start over again. I try to quit this idea but it won't let me go so maybe there is something to it? I hope. Not earned much from my self published books but ...money isn't my main goal... Tho it would be nice. Also I want to share my ideas but I can't when people don't read it :(
@devonseamoor4 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with the part called obsession. For that implies control, the wanting and force involved. Which is completely opposite of the true nature of creativity, as I perceive it. I myself would choose passion as the driving quality, for that's freedom of expression in a joyful manner. The best vitamin for my creativity.
@devonseamoor4 жыл бұрын
@@Eowynnofrohan I suggest to let go of your obsession and start writing a daily journal, just after you wake up. Write down whatever it is that comes to mind and, after a while, discover your imagination in your natural talent for writing down what is in resonance with your unique and authentic form.

Through my 20's, 30's and 40's, I was on fire with multi-media creative inspiration and expression. Drawing, painting, textiles, Mixed media sculpture. It was unstoppable, I thought, until aging extinguished it. There's no forcing it to return. It used to be an effortless gift and joy. There's no filling the chasm left behind. This is too personal, but there it is.

@BriannaBanana14 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that upon hearing that, Taika would give you a pep talk about how great it is that you're here, and probably how he's had the same feeling at times in his own life. I feel that feeling a lot these days, but Taika also reminds me of myself in ways after watching this, with his inability to focus on just one creative outlet, and having a drive to express himself and his viewpoint through creativity, and getting obsessed with all kinds of things over the course of his life. When he was talking about his mom's cancer and how maybe doing a series of random bodily movements would keep him from getting cancer, that struck me as a very OCD sort of thing. I can relate to that. Maybe he was totally joking, or maybe he was poking fun at actually having OCD. Idk. Either way, Taika actually gives me hope for my professional future because he reminds me of myself in the ways I've mentioned, and has gotten as far as he has now. I used to compare myself to others a lot, but over the years, it's sunk in how unhelpful that is, and how miserable it can make you. I'm still tempted to do it, but when I feel myself sliding in that direction, I try to talk myself out of it and remind myself that it isn't going to help me. Just try to focus on being better than you were yesterday. That's been a more successful approach for me. I mean, I still get down when I feel I've stagnated, but you and I both also need to be kind to ourselves. Tearing ourselves down won't get us anywhere either.

Inspiration comes from an appreciation and understanding of art. Creativity comes from an internal uncontrollable need to create. You can’t necessarily “be” more creative but you can think more creatively. Just watch movies, shows, animes, animations, and short films. Look at comics, paintings drawings, and sculptures. Listen to music. Go on walks, watch people, listen to people.. really actually listen to people. Just observe the world that’s been there the whole time, you’ve just forgotten about it because you were too busy thinking about your own life. The world is an incredibly rich and beautiful place. You just gotta look at it... really actually just look at it. And the appreciation and everything else comes easily.

Just watched his new film What We Do in the Shadows. He has co-directed and co-written it and also plays one of the leads and it is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I think the guy is incredible. From watching this talk however it is clear he suffers from a compulsive disorder or did as a child. I'm sure he must know this, but I wonder why he did not mention it specifically, just all the symptoms.

Agreed, I love Taika. I think he's genius. Also, What We Do in the Shadows... let's just say I've seen it four times :b

Robert J. Williamson Whoa, agreed. He definitely has obsessive compulsive disorder. I have it too and when he mentioned thinking about cancer and having those rituals, it was all too familiar. I have it as well and construct these ridiculous meaningless rituals to stave off things that can't be controlled (to a degree). Interesting guy though.

TheMartine haha I rented it and watched it 2 times. I miss it! Might rent it again. Its really great film. They should release an extended version with another 2 hours.

Robert J. Williamson Yeah he mentioned some Obsessive Compulsive symptoms.

***** - Yes, he seems at ease with it, I just noticed all the symptoms and wondered if he even knows these were part of OCD.

The entire point of this TEDx talk was wrapped up in the last 15 seconds - this is why he's so genius. We are important because we are here.

Coming here after watching Thor: Ragnarok. I had already seen Hunt for the Wilder People beforehand, and after listening to this TED talk, I really like Waititi's perspective on the creative process. Great director!

I can listen to Taika for days. This talk is one of the best I've heard and, from all the talks I've seen, it's the one I've learned from the most. It's funny, because he didn't take it that seriously and yet he expressed an idea better than most Ted talkers I've seen. He spoke honestly, I guess that's where the difference lies.

Totally agree with the bit on failure. It was always characterised by too many people I came across as something to fear and avoid, especially during my early school years. Sadly, I only realised much later in my life that it is definitely something to embraced as a means to improve myself.

That was an incredibly well-constructed mess. It feels like he has not written a word of it and just turned up and winged it but I bet he rehearsed every word for weeks. That is a true skill to perform like that.
