Wonderful. Congratulations! I have a relative (but adopted so not a biological relative) who has struggled with drug and other addictions for many years. He does attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes because he was raised in it. I often put his name on the temple prayer roll.

The more I learn about world religions, the more I appreciate how moderate the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints actually is in its interpretation of commandments and other requirements of its members. Muslims fast for an entire month during daylight hours… that’s obligatory for them. If they are good Muslims they have to get up before dawn to pray. Observant Jews have huge requirements surrounding food, when in the month married couples are allowed to have relations and even touch, and of course very strict rules regarding the Sabbath. Orthodox Christians have a very prescriptive fasting schedule leading up to Easter. Plenty of religions require women to dress much more modestly than the LDS church does. Etc etc. In comparison with non-denominational Christianity or no religion, sure, LDS looks “higher demand”, but that’s such an American-centric point of view. There are many religions with strict rules about how their members live- the LDS church gives so much leeway to member to make their own decisions about how to implement commandments in their life. Having standards to strive to meet or an understanding of widely accepted biblical commandments to be sexually pure, tithe, keep the sabbath day holy, keep the 10 commandments, etc doesn’t make it exceptionally “high demand”.

So I have been a member all my life. I have always found it very interesting when people refer to this as a high demand religion, because I literally have known no other way. The demand that people are so exhausted, daunted by, or don’t like, are all things I’ve just been raised to be, and it feels like my personality. I really don’t know what it’s like to be more “lax”. But for me, it’s not a bad thing at all. It motivates me and has taught me to go for things I really want in life and what’s worth keeping up the good work for. Have I struggled with being a perfectionist in life? Yes. I definitely had it in my head for a while that if I sin at all, then I was a terrible person. Obviously, that’s a terrible mindset to have but I really don’t blame the church on that. I just blame what I thought I was supposed to be doing as a member and I realized that it’s not what the church or the gospel is about and it has literally never taught that. I realized that everyone makes mistakes and sins. We just need to pick ourselves up and try again. The atonement was made for literally everyone. Jesus saved the ones who thought they needed to be the best member of the church ever. We need to let go and let God now. Anyway, I say all this because I’m sure people think I live a high demand life, but living this way has been a great lifestyle in so many ways and it keeps me so grounded!

Which is good! Also, I think that's where the high demand comes in most people don't like to be held accountable and I think that's one of the biggest problems people have with the LDS church, is being held accountable!!

You might say it’s a high demand religion. However, you could say it’s the ultimate blessing religion. I joined the church along with my husband when we were barely 20 years old. Nearly 60 years ago. at my age, I can look back and compare my siblings health with my own and find immense blessings. I had no problem with the word of wisdom because I had faith in what the gospel was teaching me. I haven’t lived it perfectly but definitely, I lived what I understood. The discipline I received in my life by living close to the gospel principles has been the greatest blessing. I’m not a gospel scholar, but I have a strong testimony. When my husband and I joined the church, we had one small child age one and a half years old. We now have nine children, spouses to most of the children, 25 grandchildren and nearly 29 great grandchildren. The gospel brought us those. I will be eternally grateful for them, everyone. The wholesomeness alone by obedience to gospel principles brings so many blessings. It never felt high demand to me because of the many great blessings and tender mercies.

I would describe it as having high expectations. As an educator, you expect the best from your students. While it's important that they try their hardest, it's also okay if they can't meet those expectations right away. The key is that they continue to work towards those goals, with the understanding that they will eventually achieve them. Whereas "demand" implies a lack of choice, agency is at the core of what we do.

Huh... I've never considered the gospel to be 'high demand'. It's so much a part of my lifestyle that I've never considered it to be super demanding. If you're going to live a religion, it will have expectations. Like you said, Christ calls us to do things that are beyond our comfort zone. Today's culture is also uncomfortable with living a disciplined, clean, and wholesome life. Thereby making it 'high demand'.

I like the idea of a "high opportunity religion." It's like a "hard-easy" religion: hard now but easier later. Often, the pressures of living the gospel of Jesus Christ are ones we put on ourselves because Jesus asks us to "do our best” and he makes up the difference. It's worth noting that "our best" can change. What we can do today might be different (read: less) from what we can do tomorrow, but it's still "our best." Only we really know if we did our best.

In other religions people have to presently go to church several times per week or you can go to church early and in the middle of the day and at night everyday. I live it daily but most people didn’t or do not notice it my calling is on Sunday and because church is only on Sundays and I let ve my faith privately since every is working or studying.

It is a high demand religion because you are required to heavily invest yourself in order to be a participant. The covenants in the temple require you to be willing to make every sacrifice in the name of the church and God. If that isn't high demand, I don't know what is.

LDS theology give everyone agency to receive salvation through the atonement of Jesus Christ into a kingdom of glory according to the law of the kingdom that one is willing to abide, be it Telestial, Terestrial or Celestial. The ordinances and covenants of the fullness of the gosple of Jesus Christ pertain to salvation in the Celestial Kingdom.

As I have gone out to see other Christians, they come freely to Christ. They don't have strict covenants made at 18 and garments to make them obey or a bishop with a spiritual pitchfork. Always be worthy always keep your covenants.. The other Christians obey cuz its the right thing to do and their love of Christ. I'm so jealous of them. Its their understanding of Grace.

I know a girl who was taken out by an evangelical boy, got her wasted and has his way with her. She got pretty messed up and is still healing. I understand he’s still very into his worship stuff. Don’t know if he’s personally looking forward to being in heaven worshipping Jesus, but according to his theology he’s good to go. Not sure if I envy that understanding of Grace.

And the grace you find attractive traditionally only covers the people who believe in the “right Jesus.” That Jesus tosses everyone else in the eternal ovens, including the douchbags’ victims, if they don’t believe in the right Jesus.

Sometimes the Church DOES ask too much of its members, and the external matters of compliance will crowd out other responsibilities as a result. There are countless stories from people whose fathers served on a bishopric or stake presidency and were largely absentee as a result. On tithing the Church preaches math-defying faith to the members while opting not to exercise such faith in the level of GA compensation. There is no limit to the ideals of a church actively seeking godliness, and imperfect humans running the show will make mistakes in asking only the appropriate amount for each person. Part of sustaining that process is seeking the spirit in your own life to know when to accept and when to draw boundaries so that you can prioritize the more internal stewardships like caring for one’s family.

🚩 Big red flag to be grouped with Scientology and JW. I think the view is more accurately described as “high demand, high control religion.” Leaving out the last clause is probably very important. And looking at the definition it’s interesting to overlap with the LDS church: “A high-demand, high-control religion is a faith community that requires obedience; discourages its members from questioning its rules, principles, and practices; expects subservience and loyalty; discourages trusting relationships outside the group; perpetuates the notion that those within the group are right and superior to those outside of it; promotes extreme or polarizing beliefs; and expects its members to suppress their authentic selves in exchange for the sense of belonging and security the group offers.”

yes, there probably aren’t many groups who don’t expect you to follow a set of rules, but among those groups the ones that discourage you from questioning the rules are considered a high demand high control group.

I think the high demand is a misinterpretation of "keep the commandments". People take that upon themselves, thinking they can do it under their own efforts. However we can't follow the commandments without the Spirit. We trust in ourselves instead of the Spirit.

And young lady just made a very good point that I've heard before You're all in or not which is a powerful statement because I wouldn't bet money that you're going to find your way home to the Lord if you only believe in him when it's convenient for you. You believe in him 💯 or you don't. You're all in or you're not.

High demand yes but also high reward. God expects extra from us as he offers exaltation to the faithful. Those who aspire to low demand religion will get a low level reward in the eternities. So it really comes down to what one wants to be in the eternities. Does one want to be a God or a servant? If someone tells me they have left the Church, I say to them great. They can possibly be my servant for eternity. Why is that a bad thing for me?

We are following Jesus which shows our love to God and strengthens us spiritually. We are taught to serve one another and keep God's commandments just as Jesus did in the Bible. Also, the Bible mentions several times the importance of paying tithes (the word tithe literally means 1/10). And it's always voluntary - the church doesn't ask to see our paystubs - it's between us and the Lord as a matter of faith. And Christ used the widow's mites donation to the temple as an example which was all she had and told the young man to sell all that he had and give the money to the poor. This is the higher law of consecration they discussed in this segment. Jesus clearly taught this and wants us to learn it. And until then He asks us to at least give a tithe meaning 1/10 of your increase since God has given us everything. That is a small sacrifice for us to show our gratitude for all God gives us and then God blesses us again for being faithful in it and because it helps to build His church to fulfill His purposes on the Earth which is always accomplished through His people who follow His commandments... Here are some of the scriptures from the Bible that mentions paying tithes... 2 Chronicles 31: 5-6 5 ¶ And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the *tithe* of all things brought they in abundantly. 6 And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the *tithe* of oxen and sheep, and the *tithe* of holy things which were consecrated unto the Lord their God, and laid them by heaps. Deuteronomy 14: 22-23 22 Thou shalt truly *tithe* all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. 23 And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the *tithe* of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.
