He actually had to be that way for an important but tragic reason. He wanted to keep his bloodline alive in the case of his death at the hand of his wind tunnel. His greatest weapon was his greatest curse courtesy of Naraku placing a curse on his grandfather who was a famous Buddhist monk during a fight in the form of the Wind tunnel. He even has his beads and wraps stitched constantly cause the Wind tunnel was actually tearing open more and more during the series. He wanted to have a child to avenge him in case he failed. Sango was simply just that girl to Love in case he succeeded.

Probably in part because it's such a strange thing to say and because he gets punished for it constantly. They don't make it gross and they don't make him overly creepy or dangerous to these women.
