his reign is over and faith is far from him.
These lines were written by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji in his Zafarnama which was a poetic letter he sent to Aurangzeb declaring his moral victory over the Mughals. Forever, the legacy of Aurangzeb will echo within these words. This is the legacy we’ll go over in this video. I’m going to try and answer three questions about Aurangzeb. First, was he a good emperor? Second, was he an intolerant bigot who cracked down on minorities? And finally, did he destroy the Mughal Empire? Let’s get started.

The Akhbarat chronicles of Aurangzeb's court official records proudly the temple destructions done under his rule. Some of the samples: 25 May 1679: ‘Khan-i-Jahan Bahadur returned from Jodhpur after demolishing its temples, and bringing with himself several cart-loads of idols. The Emperor ordered that the idols, which were mostly of gold, silver, brass, copper or stone and adorned with jewels, should be cast in the quadrangle of the Court and under the steps of the Jama Mosque for being trodden upon.’ January-February 1680: ‘The grand temple in front of the Maharana’s mansion (at Udaipur) - one of the wonderful buildings of the age, which had cost the infidels much money - was destroyed and its images broken.’ ‘On 24 January the Emperor went to view the lake Udaisagar and ordered all the three temples on its banks to be pulled down.’ ‘On 29 January Hasan Ali Khan reported that 172 other temples in the environs of Udaipur had been demolished.’ ‘On 22 February the Emperor went to look at Chitor, and by his order the 63 temples of the place were destroyed.’ 10 August 1680: ‘Abu Turab returned to Court and reported that he had pulled down 66 temples in Amber’. 2 August 1680: ‘Temple of Someshwar in western Mewar ordered to be destroyed.’ September 1687: ‘On the capture of Golkonda, the Emperor appointed Abdur Rahim Khan as Censor of the city of Haidarabad with orders to put down infidel practices and (heretical) innovations and destroy the temples and build mosques on their sites.’ Circa 1690: Instances of Aurangzeb’s temple destruction at Ellora, Trimbaakeshwar, Narsinghpur (foiled by snakes, scorpions and other poisonous insects), Pandharpur, Jejuri (foiled by the deity) and Yavat (Bhuleshwar) are given by K.N. Sane in Varshik Iribritta for Shaka 1838, pp. 133-135. 1693: ‘The Emperor ordered the destruction of the Hateshwar temple at Vadnagar, the special guardian of the Nagar Brahmans.’ 3rd April 1694: ‘The Emperor learnt from a secret news-writer of Delhi that in Jaisinghpura Bairagis used to worship idols, and that the Censor on hearing of it had gone there, arrested Sri Krishna Bairagi and taken him with 15 idols away to his house; then the Rajputs had assembled, flocked to the Censor’s house, wounded three footmen of the Censor and tried to seize the Censor himself; so that the latter set the Bairagi free and sent the copper idols to the local subahdar.’ Middle of 1698: ‘Hamid-ud-din Khan Bahadur who had been deputed to destroy the temple of Bijapur and build a mosque (there), returned to Court after carrying the order out and was praised by the Emperor.’ ‘The demolition of a temple is possible at any time, as it cannot walk away from its place.’ - Aurangzeb to Zullfiqar Khan and Mughal Khan. ‘The houses of this country (Maharashtra) are exceedingly strong and built solely of stone and iron. The hatchet-men of the Government in the course of my marching do not get sufficient strength and power (i.e., time) to destroy and raze the temples of the infidels that meet the eye on the way. You should appoint an orthodox inspector (darogha) who may afterwards destroy them at leisure and dig up their foundations.’ - Aurangzeb to Ruhullah Khan in Kalimat-i-Aurangzib. 1 January 1705: ‘The Emperor, summoning Muhammad Khalil and Khidmat Rai, the darogha of hatchet-men…., ordered them to demolish the temple of Pandharpur, and to take the butchers of the camp there and slaughter cows in the temple…. It was done.’

We literally have court documents written and signed by Aurangzeb stored in the Rajasthan Archives museum. Why don't you mention the fact his army took s* x shlovos in hundreds of thousands during expansions into other kingdoms. Why don't you mention the fact he offered money to the puar to kanvort (spelt incorrectly to avoid censorship of comment). All these undeniable historical facts from first hand primary sources of information like court documents written and signed by him and his biography written by Saqi Mustaq Khan a member of Aurangzeb's court and close ally ie Maasir-i-Alamgiri. The fact is religions all over have symbols which others may not believe in . We need to respect sensitive feelings of Muslims regarding Mecca . We also need to respect the golden temple of Sikhs , church of nativity in Bethelhelm and Al Haram mosque in Jerusalem Aurangazeb whether he was directly responsible or not for the destruction of Kasi Vishwanath temple in Benares and Krishna birthplace in Mathura which Hindus consider as holiest of holiest of places,These happened during his reign. The fact that Hindu Mansbdars under his collaborated with him is no excuse. There seem to lack of humanity when you humiliate ,blind and kill your own brother in pursuit of power . His frugal religious existence , administrative ability and his grasp of realpolitik cannot compensate for lack of humanity in him . Hitler was also a teetotaler , vegetarian and was kind to children and dogs . It does not compensate for his evil doings.

I wouldn't really say he lacked humanity. He just did whatever he needed to do to keep the Empire stable. Any actions that he took against Hindu temples wasn't out of hatred for Hindus or their religion, as has been already established, otherwise he wouldn't have funded the building of Hindu temples and he wouldn't have kept so many Hindus in governance. The temples or Masjids he destroyed were destroyed simply because they posed a threat to his Empire. I think it's completely justifiable for Hindus to hold contempt for Aurangzeb's destruction of their temples. But when I see them painting him as some sort of Hinduphobic bigot that looked down on Hindus, I have to completely disagree with that notion (not saying that's what you're doing tho).

@@rudrakumar5516 I wouldn't say that. The Marathas fought fiercely in their rebellion against the Mughals but conventionally they were no match for the 500,000 strong Mughal Juggernaut. That's why they had to resort to Gorilla warfare and scorched earth tactics. It is only after the death of Aurangzeb (1707) do we get to witness the emergence of the Marathas which lasted till 1772, the year Peshwa Madhavrao passed away (The Marathas began to stagnate after his untimely demise). That makes it 65 years of dominance and hegemony (Which was by no means unchallenged, A perfect example of that being the 3rd battle of Panipat).

After this Guru Guru Govind Singh made 5 rules compulsary for Sikhs. One was that every Sikhs should carry a kirpan to defend himself. Arungzeb also killed thevtwo sons of Guru Govind Singh. Then Banda Bahadur also fought against the Mughal empire and was killed. The Sikhs kept fight against the Mughals till thevempirebwas finished. It was the common practice for Muslim rulers to kill all of their brothers and nephews. Even the grandsons of Muhammad ( Hasan and Hussain ) were killed in the fight for who woukd became the Kalifa. Later whenever a Turkish Sultan died once son used ton become the Sultan and the others wete all killed.

The guru was given a choice to convert to Islam which he didn’t so he was martyred he didn’t rebellion at all. Guru arjan was literally martyred because he was gaining influence among people and the Mughal emperor Jahangir viewed him as a threat so he decided to kill him. They’re also sources saying that Jahangir wanted guru arjan to remove some of the text in the guru granth Shaib that he found offensive to be taken out. That’s a very disrespectful thing to ask

Finding your KZbin channel has been like discovering a new Book series like Lord of the Rings, GoT, or Witcher. Stories from a Rich world I know so little about. I was wondering if you would cover the evolution of not depicting the prophet Muhammad. I remember visiting Istanbul and seeing an old Koran in a museum. It had a depiction of Muhammed but someone had cut out his face. Meaning when the book was originally made it was okay to draw him. Could you maybe make a video of the history of the evolution of the depiction of the prophet and Allah? In Sunni Islam, plenty of paintings of him including with his face fully on display have survived. And not that this really matters in terms of history, but I feel like there's no problem depicting him and have done it myself in art, and I'm Sunni by the way.

The last bit about the empire collapsing because he had undermined his children to strengthen his hold on power seems to be not brought up often, like later Mughals generally being failures and bad rulers is well known (well ok like Shah Alam tried but it was too late by that point) but that explains everything a lot.

Alamagir II tired as well but he was assassinated. Bahadur Shah II tried but that was way too late. Although, if he was actually in control of the Sepoy Mutiny, he could have brought it back. Akbar II also was against the British but he ended up losing his royal mint and a couple of other things.

The _Akhbarat i Darbar i Mualla_ (records of Aurangzeb's court) mentions proudly the temple destructions done under his rule. Some of them are listed below: 25 May 1679: ‘Khan-i-Jahan Bahadur returned from Jodhpur after demolishing its temples, and bringing with himself several cart-loads of idols. The Emperor ordered that the idols, which were mostly of gold, silver, brass, copper or stone and adorned with jewels, should be cast in the quadrangle of the Court and under the steps of the Jama Mosque for being trodden upon.’ January-February 1680: ‘The grand temple in front of the Maharana’s mansion (at Udaipur) - one of the wonderful buildings of the age, which had cost the infidels much money - was destroyed and its images broken.’ ‘On 24 January the Emperor went to view the lake Udaisagar and ordered all the three temples on its banks to be pulled down.’ ‘On 29 January Hasan Ali Khan reported that 172 other temples in the environs of Udaipur had been demolished.’ ‘On 22 February the Emperor went to look at Chitor, and by his order the 63 temples of the place were destroyed.’ 10 August 1680: ‘Abu Turab returned to Court and reported that he had pulled down 66 temples in Amber’. 2 August 1680: ‘Temple of Someshwar in western Mewar ordered to be destroyed.’ September 1687: ‘On the capture of Golkonda, the Emperor appointed Abdur Rahim Khan as Censor of the city of Haidarabad with orders to put down infidel practices and (heretical) innovations and destroy the temples and build mosques on their sites.’ Circa 1690: Instances of Aurangzeb’s temple destruction at Ellora, Trimbaakeshwar, Narsinghpur (foiled by snakes, scorpions and other poisonous insects), Pandharpur, Jejuri (foiled by the deity) and Yavat (Bhuleshwar) are given by K.N. Sane in Varshik Iribritta for Shaka 1838, pp. 133-135. 1693: ‘The Emperor ordered the destruction of the Hateshwar temple at Vadnagar, the special guardian of the Nagar Brahmans.’ 3rd April 1694: ‘The Emperor learnt from a secret news-writer of Delhi that in Jaisinghpura Bairagis used to worship idols, and that the Censor on hearing of it had gone there, arrested Sri Krishna Bairagi and taken him with 15 idols away to his house; then the Rajputs had assembled, flocked to the Censor’s house, wounded three footmen of the Censor and tried to seize the Censor himself; so that the latter set the Bairagi free and sent the copper idols to the local subahdar.’ Middle of 1698: ‘Hamid-ud-din Khan Bahadur who had been deputed to destroy the temple of Bijapur and build a mosque (there), returned to Court after carrying the order out and was praised by the Emperor.’ ‘The demolition of a temple is possible at any time, as it cannot walk away from its place.’ - Aurangzeb to Zullfiqar Khan and Mughal Khan. ‘The houses of this country (Maharashtra) are exceedingly strong and built solely of stone and iron. The hatchet-men of the Government in the course of my marching do not get sufficient strength and power (i.e., time) to destroy and raze the temples of the infidels that meet the eye on the way. You should appoint an orthodox inspector (darogha) who may afterwards destroy them at leisure and dig up their foundations.’ - Aurangzeb to Ruhullah Khan in Kalimat-i-Aurangzib. 1 January 1705: ‘The Emperor, summoning Muhammad Khalil and Khidmat Rai, the darogha of hatchet-men…., ordered them to demolish the temple of Pandharpur, and to take the butchers of the camp there and slaughter cows in the temple…. Information without context is useless - Places of worship are destroyed everyday even now by the government itself to remove encroachment, create public infrastructure etc. 2. Jadunath Sarkar has translated all the mughal records related to Aurangzeb inito English and painted a realist picture of the fellow in his _History of Aurangzeb_ . Do also look that up. The mountain of evidence against Aurangzeb is so huge that ideally there should have been no scope for debate on it. but such is the effect of media, academia, and Islamic propaganda that medieval history of India has been turned upside down even when the primary records are unambiguous. For ex., Ibn Askari writes in _Al Tarikh_ that Aurangzeb offered privileges such as administrative posts in the empire, freedom of the criminals from prison, settlements of disputes in favor, and honor of imperial parade among other inducements for conversion of Hindus to Islam. - _The State & Religion in Mughal India_ , ML Roychoudhury.

Reports of the destruction of Temple should be sent to the court under the seal of qazis and attested by pious shaikh." Futuhat-i-‘Alamgiri of Ishwardas Nagar, translated into English by Tanseem Ahmad, 1978. p. 82 The Dehra of Keshava Rai (i.e. Shri Krishna Janmsthan) was demolished in the month of Ramzan, 1080 A.H. (13th January - 11th February 1670) by Aurangzeb’s order. “In a short time, by the great exertion of the officers, the destruction of this strong foundation of infidelity was accomplished and on its site a lofty mosque was built at the expenditure of a large sum.” To the author of Maasir-i-‘Alamigiri, the accomplishment of this “seemingly impossible work was an “instance of the strength of the Emperor’s faith.”

Many islamist who justify temple destruction says it was the traditions of hindus but fail to point out any example except one which happened nearly 700-800 years before mughals. During the same time frame of mughals two hindu empires were bitter rivals and hated each other, that is the Gajapatis of Odisha and Vijaynagara of Karnataka but even during the war these two didn't destroyed each other temples, the Gajapatis stole the idols of Vijayangara after winning a battle and Krishna deva Raya of Vijayangara did the same to Gajapatis after defeating them at 3rd Gajapatis- Vijayangara war. And this was just 10 year before babur I think.

the idols of 'ruling deities' of the kingdom were taken away and worshipped in the temple of the victorious king. This was done because Hindu kingdoms were ruled by a particular God who was the presiding deity of the royal family, and the king was merely a servant of this particular ruling deity. So in order to replace a defeated king, the idol of his Lord, i.e. the ruler of the kingdom was taken away and established in the temple of the victorious king, thus making him the new servant of this deity. In this process, the new king established his legitimacy to govern his new territory. This is completely opposite of what the Islamic armies did in Hindu temples. They broke and disrespected the idols in every way they could imagine, besides looting the wealth of the temples.

well i have always believed Akbar to be the greatest Indian ruler{Indian bcz he integrated here beautifully} he was a military genius as well which nobody talks about people only marvel at his administrative genius.Just read abt his gujarat expedition he was as lightening as Hazrat Khalid bin walid ra used to be[Im not comparing him with ALLAH s Sword] .He was a great social and cultural reformer whether radical hindus and muslims like it or not He abolished certain heretic practices and usurped a n economic system upon which Mughals would continue to live lavishingly until the 18th century.Even after Nadir shah looted 70 cr from the shahi khazana the economy would again revive in coming few years only after implementing his policies again.He was exceptional in maintainig social harmony and consolidating his empire whivh helped th coming rulers to rule efficiently unlike Aurangzeb.To me he is up there with Cyrus the great ,Suleiman the Magnificient

Muslims are obliged to pay yearly Zakat as per Shariah law. Jizya was originally meant to balance this out, as non Muslims would not be expected to pay Zakat. This fact is almost excluded in critics of Jizya.

Jizya was invariably much higher than Zakat, and Zakat earmarked by law to be exclusively spent on the betterment of the Muslim community only. Zakat was and is locked at 2.5% income. Jizya was sometimes levied at as high as 50% income and usually at least 10% of income. Punishment for non-payment of jizya was death. So no, you can't wash away jizya by mentioning zakat

From what i know of him he seems desire to centralize empire as much as he can to bolster his own power and to fund his army for more expansion. The reimpose jizya tax can be seen both as to gain more income and his disdain to Hindu at the same time.

The temple mentioned @13.48 that Aurangzeb admired are the Ellora group of temple and caves in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He is noted to have said that 'these structures are god's divine creation.' During the Mughal-Maratha war, the Mughal army had used some of these caves as horse stables.

As a Sikh, Aurangzeb has always been a rather peculiar figure for me to think about. Here's my perspective on the situation. From a religious standpoint, Guru Nanak through Guru Ram Das (the first four Gurus) were comparable to modern-day Indian "god-men" in that they espoused teachings that were otherwise anathaematised by other religious groups (i.e. Hindus, Muslims). The big reason why Sikhism endured (from my own coconut Desi perspective) over other "god-men" religious movements is largely *because* of their relations with the Mughals. Guru Nanak lived during the advent of Babur, Guru Angad during the advent of Humayun. Before this, the Panjab as a region was no stranger to Muslim conquests so they viewed the Mughals as 'outsiders, but Muslim like our Desi Muslim brothers.' At this point in time, the emphasis of Sikhism in its relative infancy was on brotherhood and compassion for your fellow man, regardless of religion or caste. By the time Akbar came into power, the Sikhs' perception of the Mughals perks up dramatically. There's a historically dubious tale that all Sikhs who attended gurdwara school learn about: Akbar wished to meet with Guru Amar Das (the third Guru), but Amar Das would only agree to meet with Akbar if they all sat together and ate langar (the communal meal) together as equals. Akbar accepted this and was taken aback by the way langar was conducted: an exalted Guru like Amar Das regularly ate communal meals with people of all walks of life, and this was Akbar's first time doing the same thing. He gifted Amar Das the land which would house the eventual Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) that Guru Ram Das would build after Amar Das's death of old age. I say it's historically dubious, because while it is generally accepted among all scholars that the Mughals granted the land to the Sikhs for the Harmandir Sahib gurdwara, the exact details have been lost to time. Then Guru Arjan comes along, and this is where Sikhism starts to become political and each Guru from that point forward becomes a martyr of sorts. The story that I was told at gurdwara school in Amreeka is that Guru Arjan provided shelter to Khusrau, Jahangir's rebellious son because Sikh doctrine says that the doors of gurdwaras are open to all except idlers. The Mughal perspective is that the Sikhs were actively rebelling against the Mughals because of an alliance that Guru Arjan made with Khusrau (or so I was told; I haven't done thorough research on this so please don't quote me). Whatever the story may be, Khusrau was captured and so was Guru Arjan. Arjan was given the choice of converting to Islam or dying, so he chose to become a martyr instead. Each subsequent Sikh Guru was then relentlessly hunted by either Jahangir, Shah Jahan, or Aurangzeb, and so the Sikh story quickly evolved from "brotherhood and compassion for your fellow man" to "actively protecting the oppressed." The Khalsa was established by Guru Gobind Singh with the express idea that there needed to be a skilled, disciplined, and loyal force of soldiers who still adhered to the core of Guru Nanak's message while being willing to put your life on the line against genuine tyranny. Was Aurangzeb a terrible ruler? To my people, he certainly was but the death of Aurangzeb eventually led to the Sikh Misls uniting under Maharaja Ranjit Singh some 50 years after Aurangzeb's death, so in a way... we owe our most significant historical achievements to him. Though I would argue that Jahangir was the true villain in the Sikh history books for getting the ball rolling in the first place.

jahanjir did not kill Guru Arjan Ji he just forwarded the duties to chandu shah who tortured guruji because he refused to marry him daughter at the request of the sangat. At that time, if a bride was rejected by someone of high authority nobody would marry the woman. So Chandu Shah got very angry and thought that he destroyed his daughters life and wanted to kill guruji. He was actually going to accept the marriage but the sangat told him not to because Chandu Shah insulted Guruji in the past, so guruji respected the sangat's decision.

Emperor Aurangzeb has been one of the most righteous and unique rulers in history. He was a brilliant economist. He is the man who alone defeated the English, Chinese and Portuguese. One king mastering multiple disciplines. Other kings such as Louis XVI of France praised him a few times. During Aurangzeb's sharia reign Mughal India surpassed Qing China and became the world's largest economy, worth 1/4 of global GDP and waved the Proto-industrialisation (Bengal showed signs of a possible Industrial Revolution, hence preceding England, but the British deindustrialised its economy starting from the Battle of Plassey). Gujarat recovered from a famine due to his policies based from Islamic finance (Fatwa Alamgiri). As a practicing Muslim, Aurangzeb memorised the entire Holy Quran and never took a penny from the Royal treasury for his personal use like the other monarchs (he imprisoned his father due to his corruption with the treasury), he avoided a luxurious life and by profession he was cap sewer despite being born with golden spoon...Aurangzeb was also the first one to defeat the English (Anglo-Mughal War) and took Mount Kailash from the Chinese. He repelled Tai-Ahom attacks from Assam and protected the hindus and drove back the Portuguese inquisition coming to the north. Stories of the demolitions of temples were highly exaggerated, he paid maintenance for the temples and gave good wages to the hindu priests. He was the greatest and most pious Emperor in Indian history.
