Hello all. I was one of the 2020 operators of LTD and featured in this video.. As of 2020, red car #6 is the better ride. A bit faster and tracks very straight. Blue #8 had an issue with binding up on left turns so it would lose considerable speed. Those are the only two operational cars as of now. Plans moving forward are to bring the remaining 5 restored cars back to usable condition one per year over the next several years. Car #1 is in the glass case in the station, and will never be used again. To clarify, PA state regulations prevent us from operating more than 1 car on the track due to the primitive controls.

Everything about this is so cool and heartwarming somehow. A roller coaster that most people could outrun, has been around for over a century and yet still manages to thrill and surprise its riders. Must be a cool one to operate as well, not a lot of roller coasters let you literally push the cars along the track. And the amount of care that has gone into keeping it running more or less exactly as it did in 1902 is just wonderful. Don't know if the fates will ever take me to Altoona, PA but I'd love to ride this one day. It's literally history.

Can confirm. I was 11 when it reopened. Rode dozens of times. Those dips are serious. Legit more "thrilling" than any modern coaster. They used to charge per ride - not included with park pass - when it first reopened. It's ludicrous.

It's genuinely a ton of fun. I'm lucky enough to have it only about an hour and a half from me and I happened to go to the park the day that ACE was having an event and an auction of historic memorabilia pertaining to the coaster, including some of the technical drawings for the ride and some scale models of the cars. It was sometime in the 2002-2004 time frame.

I never expected the oldest coaster in the world to be part of an analysis video~ I agree, roller coasters are a classic that is definitely timeless, especially those that are of the age of Leap the Dips, and even the classic coasters after it, especially until the 1990s. Parks who are able to keep close to 100 year old wood coasters, like Leap the Dips and the Coney Island Cyclone, running are true legends. I can't imagine the around the clock maintenance that has to be done to these old classics to keep them operating and safe to match with the current standards of organizations, such as IAAPA and NAARSO. It's all about dedication of the park's maintenance team, and I think this video shows just how important maintenance is for both old and modern coasters in terms of technology and strutural strength. Kudos to Lakemont Park for proactively maintaining the ride, and their dedication to ensuring that the ride is still safe today~

I remember the first time I went to Lakeomont Park in the late 80's and Leap The Dips was fenced off, it meant nothing to me. Then as a 16 year old I drove a bunch of friends there and no kidding - ride all day cost $2. It's not an impressive park but they had several flat rides and another coaster called the Skyliner which is not bad at all. Then in the early 2000's my future wife and I had become enthusiasts and riding the oldest operating coaster in the world was very exciting .. we ended up stuck on the lift hill which only made it that much more special. I never knew until this video that there were days where you could have air time, my ride was slow and dull. As soon as covid is passed I'm going back... great video - thank you

I love the Cyclone, it really throws you left and right "FUN." Steel coasters and fun and fast but nothing beats the thrill of a bumpy jerkey ride of a wooden roller coaster. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have ridden Ghostrider at Knott's Berry Farm.... Leap The Dips may not be fast but is ride back into history. Lakemont Park used to be my home park before I moved to California. I am so glad that I got to ride Leap The Dips before I moved. I also should say that it is actually really fun because it has no restraints and you fly out of the seat. When I was younger my mom was instructed to help the operator with the brakes as they were short-staffed that day and the ride was running a little too fast.

So nice to see a shoutout to Vuoristorata (literally, "roller coaster") in Linnanmäki. It's my "home park". Vuoristorata is a relative youngster compared to Leap The Dips, and I believe it was very old tech when it was build in early 1950s as a "temporary structure". Which makes sense because it's a copy of the Danish coaster mentioned. Still, there's just something magical about that kind of roller coaster.

With all your technical content, I'm surprised you didn't cover more info on the most technical part of the ride... the engine for the lift hill. The combustion engine, electric motor, and steam engine all existed in some for at this time, but I have no idea which one would have been the most practical at this ride's creation. Maybe a horse on a hamster wheel? Surely the ride operators couldn't have somehow powered people up that first hill. Anyway, great content as always.

Was at Lakemont this summer. I absolutely love Leap the Dips, Skyliner (which is a Pheonix story that doesn't get talked about enough, ie a relocated buzbar woodie. And Skyliner has at least 3 moments on par with Jack Rabbit's doubble dip), and the paddle boats included on the wristband. I also love the community park that happens to have rides feel to it. Hope to see more like it in the future (looking at Williams Grove as a candidate to operate with a similar model).

Leap The Dips is legendary, being the oldest roller coaster that's still operating. But considering that it's the world's oldest operating roller coaster I'm a little surprised to discover it has side friction wheels. That's because Coaster at Playland (Canada's oldest still operating coaster, built much later in 1958 that uses flange wheels) doesn't have upstop wheels and it also doesn't have side friction wheels! "Coaster" does, however, have upstop pads.They're pieces of metal that stick out of both sides of each car of every train that fit into it's upstop groove; an indentation in the inside of the entire track length equivalent to the width of about one of the six planks of wood on the inside of both the right and left track, which prevents any car of the train from leaving the track. That inner groove is reenforced with metal on the top during all portions of convex track where any airtime might occur on any one of all seven single bench cars (eight cars before 2020 when one was removed due to covid so that guests can have a front and back ride with every other row blocked off for social distancing measures) possibly resulting in a derailment. In any case, each train has a car 0 which actually contains an oil dispenser to grease (either one of or both) the running rails and/or the upstop pads. To this day not one person has died or become seriously become injured on "Coaster" since it opened over 62 years ago It's one of the top ten wooden coasters in the world today in almost December 2020, and it's even considered better than Cyclone at Luna Beach Brooklyn. I'll admit I've still never ridden Cyclone, but I think it looks to have a better height, drop, speed and length than "Coaster" but the trains looks shitty with only three cars each with four rows. so far the only wooden coaster I've ridden to beat "Coaster" is Ghostrider". I know that'll all change when I ride El Toro. I'm only asking you what think is the best coaster in the world without side friction and upstop wheels, considering that might disqualify "Leap the Dips" for using side friction wheels. I'm not disrespecting Leap The Dips; ; It's legendary for being the word's oldest operating coaster, but if this was about the best roller coaster to not have side friction wheels and also not have upstop wheels, (with upstop pads allowed) what would your oldest favourite be?

I'm from Denmark, and I can comfortably say that Rutschebanen at Bakken is quite possibly the worst roller coaster in the world. You genuinely feel like you are going to die. Not to mention it has a tunnel where (at least when I last rode it) they placed a cutout of a woman spreading her legs above the entrance. Classy. However, do not confuse it with Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens. That one is a beautiful gem and is smooth as steel. I highly recommend it, and the park as a whole.

Thanks for the video giving the history and restoration of operation of this historic coaster. I have had the opportunity to visit this park twice and loved riding it. Growing up I attended Willow Grove Park and this coaster reminded me of their scenic coaster that I believe also was a side friction coaster. The lift hill had that same wooden roll Back system and was one of the first coasters that I liked to ride. Today I have ridden many wooden coasters around the country but did enjoy the unrestrained ride on the dips.

I got to ride it in 1982 on my first coast to coast coaster trip. Two things struck me then. 1.) The bottom track was entirely wood, no steel running rails. At 3:00 in this great video, you can see that there were no steel rails when that picture was taken. 2.) It was/is a surprising amount of fun. Leap The Dips shocked me because it was/is so enjoyable! I'm highly impressed with the dedication of the maintenance crew. I'll be there this year! Thanks for a wonderful video of this magnificent coaster!

It's super interesting that so many rollercoasters, both old and modern, have been given up on fixing, probably for monetary reasons, but this one stood the test of time and they gave it another shot. Not only that but gave it minimal upgrades and rather keep it as original as possible.

Rode this old coaster with my son (a dedicated coaster enthusiast) this summer. The 119 year-old beast nearly cracked a vertebrae of this obese senior citizen-but my 32-year-old son loved it. Beware of the harsh ride, especially the dips, from the back seat.

This is the second theme park thing I’ve had on my bucket list for years, go to Luna Park in Brooklyn. Seeing the oldest rollercoaster standing never fails to make me smile. The Thinderbolt is one of my fave woodies alongside the Racer, and the Thunderbolt’s been around since the 1920s! 😊

Leap the Dips is a fantastic roller coaster credit if you ever have the opportunity. An even more hidden treasure: this park has another, more traditional wooden out-and-back coaster that has NO restrictions. Not even a buzz bar. I was capable of standing throughout the ride. Fun, but super scary! (and highly recommended 😁)

Melbournes my town, and I’ve been on the Luna Park coaster on a school trip years ago. My friend challenged me to go on every ride in the park, finishing with the Scenic. Poor guy was sick after that one! Not much speed, but the car dances around in the corners and the whole track assembly shakes as you pull up from the dips.

I visited Lakemont for the first time since 2016 this past July (the weekend that Leap the Dips reopened to the public), and I must say it was running better than I had remembered it. The park as a whole looks much nicer than it did back in 2016, and although I lament the removal of the SkyDiver, I look forward to the continued improvements in the coming years. Great video, by the by. At the onset of the pandemic, while the parks were closed and the 2020 season faced an uncertain turn, I was furloughed and had fallen into a deep depression. Your videos helped me through the worst of it, offering much-needed respite from an otherwise harsh reality. To you and your fellow Coaster Idiots, thank you for all that you’ve done and continue to do. Here’s to a brighter 2021 all around. P.S. - continued viewing of the Coaster Idiot videos has forever ingrained the Six Flags theme song into my subconscious, for which I fear there is no cure.
