In this video I sit down with my Grandfather, Dennis Field, as he talks through his photo albums from his years in the Royal Navy, from 1945-1947. He traded a box of player cigarettes for a box brownie camera in Hong Kong in late 1945 and proceeded to take photos of his two years of service. On top of listening to some of his stories, and seeing his images, I also offer some thoughts on how this has challenged me to look at my work beyond today, and start to think about how my images might tell stories to future generations, showing what life was like in my day and time.

Thanks a lot for sharing his story Sean. I remember when I spoke to my tattoo artist who told me he would like to do more painting and photography because while we think tattoos last forever, they only last a lifetime. Photography and paintings can live forever.

When we have KZbin video recommendations flooded with "camera hacks" simply because of popularity, there is a Sean Tucker that shows what can be expressed because of photography. This is the kind of video that should go viral. I understand that there will always be new people wanting to learn how to use their cameras. But at some point, these new photographers should understand WHY they are photographing something or someone.

I’m from Singapore, what lovely photos your grandpa took, including the ones in Singapore! He is sure right about Singapore being no where near what the photos depict today. These photos are a treasure for us Singaporeans too as we often cherish the sights and scenes of our past, being a relatively young nation. What a dear lovely articulate gentleman with a great storytelling gift and fantastic vivid memories at his age, and with the foresight of wanting to capture precious memories over cigarettes at that age. RIP. Thank you Sir for your service & sharing!

My God, between the story, your Grandpa, and the music--this memoir chokes me up! I've lost a father, father-in-law, and a favorite uncle in the last two years. All passing at about the age of 96/97. And only now do I realize I do not have nearly as many pictures of them as I wish I had. Your Grand-dad is tough old dog and a real treasure, Sean. This video reminds me that I need to start taking pictures of my family, town, and the people around me. I've spent too much focus on animals & artifacts--which have their place--but it's the people in our lives that make it a world worth living in. Thank You, Sean

The video you uploaded on KZbin "legacy" moved me a lot, As a naval school graduate and a member of the Israeli Navy, I was very excited and gave the atmosphere that your grandfather told in the video I found myself longing for the 80's and the sailing of a missile ship I served on Well done to you for great documentation Thank you from me your No. 1 fan in Israel Shlomi Ben David

That's amazing. Our parents and grandparents had only a couple of albums with photographs from their youth... and tons of stories. Todays youth will have tons of pictures, with hardly any story to tell in the future. That is sad, but I hope that with videos like this one, some of us will go to our grandparents, our old teachers or neighbours to listen to them, their stories and memories. We can learn a lot from them and a lot from their past. Hats off to you and Mr. Dennis.

Incredible. This is so like my father's memories. I have all the photos he took during the war with his Brownie which my sister has. Dad photographed battle ravaged towns, liberated orphanages and camps, mountain ranges, the soldier's life. My dad was born in Malta, fought at Anzio, perhaps the worst battle of WWII. He caught spinal meningitis from a small bird, and died at 49. I cherish his photos. Thank you for sharing your grandfather with us.

Thank you Sean, for sharing. You are very lucky to have the opportunity listen to the stories behind these photos. My dad served in the Royal Australian Airforce during the 2nd world war. He too had a brownie box camera. I wish I had asked him to tell me more stories of his time in the air force before he passed away. Now I have two full albums of photos that I now have the daunting task of scanning, restoration and achieving. Two full albums of photos that I have little to no stories to go with them.

This is very moving & inspiring. I personally feel that photography is now more ‘disposable’ than ever. Even your best work gets ‘liked’ and then people move on in a second, without fully appreciating the art form. This is why I like to print my images. There is something tactile and engaging about looking at printed images that digital will never replace.
@TL-xw6fh

I have to agree with you. Digital has in some ways make us just too complacent. Indeed, modern living is all about "in the moment" and very little is valued and shared for long. Just look at how Instagram and Snapchat is used. Very sad how we have evolved to just living for the present and not valuing what we have experienced and achieved in the past.

t Lim absolutely, digital is very important and has a place but look how much history would have been lost if it was not for the photos in this video. Who knows what the future will bring but I do hope we don’t lose the art of printing and appreciating images

Amazing to be able to hear your grandfathers story around his images. For me this is what it’s all about certainly not how many likes or views. I share what I love and it means a lot to me because of the stories behind the images. I recently finished scanning several thousands of negatives to digital so those image that I took over 30 years ago can be shared and I totally was living in the past for months. So many memories and stories as well. Thanks for sharing why it’s so important for what we do.

Not sure if this is serendipitous or just how life is, but as I watched this I am reminded of the thousands of photographs my father took of the early years of our family and how I had received in the mail just before Christmas an envelope of my mother as a small child growing into adulthood. I lost both parents a few years ago, but yet, there are still photographs detailing a life well lived by both my parents that all of us remnants can look to and see just a glimpse of the life they led. And oh they were a cute couple.

Wow!!! Thank you for sharing this. Not only is it a great glimpse into the past, but a very heart felt story of your grandfather's experiences. I connect with these type of stories as it makes me think of what kind of conversations and stories I'd hear from my grandfather had he still be alive, he too was a WWII vet. On a photography plain...this was a much needed to hear message. I often worry to much about the technical aspects, that I forget to capture the moment. Great story, great message, and may the Good Lord grant your gramps many more years with his albums.

A wonderful video, both personally and as living history. To your grandfather, every image is a full memory, the place, the day, the weather, the banter with pals, the noises and smells of foreign lands, each photo in full colour in his mind's eye. Priceless. I had a notion to video my Dad like this too, but now at 93 he has become, quite suddenly, too frail for that to happen, and I only have our conversations, snippets of his past, many moments quite new to me, in my memory. So I can't underestimate the value of your own video of your Grandad...

Hi Sean. I found this video completely captivating. It is a wonderful piece of film as it will be something you will always treasure. I had a similar conversation with my father-in-law who did his national service in the 1950s in Rhodesia. He showed me these wonderful albums of photos all taken with a Voigtlander Perkeo camera with a concertina lens. Such wonderful memories. He then rummaged around in the cupboard and gave me the camera which is $till operational. Something I will always keep and treasure. I have used it to take a picture of my father-in-law and mother-in-law at their beloved Taunton Cricket Club. I had never shot film before and so despite the. Callenge managed to get a couple of images to come out. We definitely have no excuse whatsoever with all of today’s wonderful digital cameras.. in fact it was this conversation with my father-in-law that inspired me to start putting images on Instagram and to start writing a photo blog. Having lived and worked overseas for 30 years I never took the time to record everything, I am now making the effort to put that right. Thanks to your influence my photography skills are improving but at the end of the day the image doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s all about the story and memory behind it. Something the kids might enjoy in days to come. Thanks for some great viewing. Regards from Dubai, Steve Chivers.

This is brilliant...far more than an introspection on photography. This work tells a story of a very different time, one which the current younger generation has never experienced. Imagine being 17 years old, and seeing the world from behind that lens--and now compare the 17 year olds today. Think about today's photographer, concerned with equipment or gear...and validation of their work. Compare this to the work your grandfather did...which was to record a life experience. I look forward to watching more of this. So moving and powerful. Thank you.

A beautiful story, Sean ! Many times, with all of our attention focused on equipment and software, we forget what photography is all about - capturing moments of the present for the future. I have been on a part-time quest for several years now to preserve memories of my grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren. I have hundreds of slides, 8mm movies made by my father, Super 8mm movies made by myself and hundreds of hours of video to save. In spite of the effort involved, my preserved images are my most important possession. You have inspired me to work even harder for people I will never see (if that makes any sense.) By the way, I hope I'm half as sharp as your grandfather when I'm his age ! Now on to your next episode !

I am writing this as I watch this moving recollection by your grandfather. I am reminded of my father who served with the British in WWII. He too traveled a lot and later shared a few photos with me. I regret that he didn't record his adventures photographically as diligently as your grandfather. He did get into photography after the war. He bought a camera (a Leica) in Germany and started taking photos. Thanks for letting your grandfather relate his adventures without interruption. And, you answered my question about digitizing and preserving the photos! Wonderful animated storyteller, and as an aside, proved that you don't need to focus on the latest and greatest gear to make amazing photographs. Please convey my deepest respect and admiration to him.

My father died when he was 83 and the last couple of years of his life he suffered from severe Alzheimer's Disease and didn't recognize anyone around him, not even his wife, my mother, who he'd been happily married to for 59 years. Lovely story. I think back on my days in the service and the 500 or so rolls of film (mostly Kodachrome) I shot over the 15 years I spent in the Navy and think back on all of the context that will be lost if I don't get the related stories recorded somehow. I’m watching this at 8.30 in the morning on a snowy day in Austria and I did not expect to start today with tears in my eyes. Not only is this an incredible collection of memories told by the man who captured them, a rarity in itself for images so old, it’s a scene of a man listening with fascination and with love. I was watching you, Sean, as he was speaking and the meaning all this has for you is unmistakable. Thank you once again for sharing so much more than images with us and making us think about our legacy, instead of the here and now. You are one of a kind ❤️

Certainly ranks as one of your best pieces of work! My girl sat and watch this and wants to visit with your grandfather just to have a spot of tea. She definitely was smitten with his stories. And again, you did a superb job documenting him and his stories. If I can't take my albums with me, I'm not going.

Sean, don't know whether like you or not, but I also have a great interested in history and documented evidences of it, that tell the story. This episode was nothing but a sheer joy for me. It felt like I myself was touching those photographs, which is quite a rare experience for photographers of this generation like me. Thank you so much for this episode. Wish a good health to your Grandfather and you.

Loved this. I'm guessing, to a lot of us who watch your channel, photography is primarily an art form which we to use to create with. It's nice to remember that photos can also just capture a memory, a time and place in our lives, for ourselves to look back on. I hope to have an album like that one day, thanks for sharing.

Wonderful interview! It brought back long-ago talks with my father who joined the US Merchant Marine in 1941. Your grandfather's memories echoed those passed on by my father. I will have to dig out his photos and relay the stories to my children. Thank you.

Beautifully rendered. As I watched, I was so moved by the passage of time. A handsome young man, now an elderly gentleman, and you looking on lovingly like a small boy enthralled by his grandfather. Looking past the "production" and it's content, it was beautiful to see past and present so privately, so intimately. Brave. Thank you, Sean.

This was beautiful, not to mention an insight into such an important period of time for all of us. So many of us take these stories and captures for granted, without thought as to what the backstories really contained. This brought me back to reality, to the importance of connecting with others through photography, to leave our legacy behind for those to come. Great stuff, Sean!

Beautiful video Sean. It reminded me of this photograph of my grandmother. She's very sick now and is starting to fade mentally due to dementia but the photograph she showed me was one of her with my mother and aunt as children. It really is like looking through time when I see that photograph. I try to remember the importance of that photo when practicing my own photography.

Hi Sean Absolutely fantastic, so interesting and moving in equal measure. I have recently returned from a trip to Australia and port Darwin and by shear coincidence i photographed a memorial to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice when Darwin was so heavily bombed during the war. In confirmation you can let your grandfather know that the roads are now tarred 🙂 Thank you oh so much for sharing 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Sean, do thank your grandfather on my behalf for sharing these wonderful photographs and his memory with us. I was born in Malaysia and grew up in Singapore too, and those photographs of KL and Singapore just brings back memories of my childhood days! He's right, Singapore has been transformed completely and it starkly reminded me of why I continue to take photographs for over 50 years!

Thank you, Sean for doing this history trip with your family member. Your Grandfather has amazing recall and it seems like he speaks of those years as if it happened yesterday! I am Australian, born to German parents and my father would rarely speak of his time as a German soldier in the second world war although he had many wounds and spent 8 years in Siberia in a war prison. Your Grandfather spoke about offering the pictures from Darwin to the Museum and I am sure they would be very interested in displaying them for all to see. Australians have deep and sad memories of war time where many lost their lives in both world wars and beyond which is commemorated every year like all over the world. Thumbs up!

An exceptional video. This is the very definition of documentary photography - so glad Dennis took it upon himself to get a camera, use it, and preserve the images he made. Imagine how exotic it all must have seemed to him and his mates from our grey and blustery island. It was just like watching and listening to our dad, Bill, who was perhaps just one year older. (We lost him in 2017, at 91.) Many parallels to Dennis. For example, Dad’s flight training took two years, so he narrowly missed having to fight in the Pacific. Some of his school buddies - whose bombing and gunnery training had lasted only one year - never made it. Dad gained over 70 years of life because of that. Like Dennis, our dad also “crossed the line”, on a US troop ship to South Africa. To celebrate, the lads got to drink Coca-Cola for the first time - a revelation! Dad drank it for the rest of his life. It seems the radiation and the sewage did your granddad a lot of good, Sean. Hope he’s still with us and in such good form.

Sean, first of all your grandfather is a great and interesting man. I loved watching this video. Secondly, I've just found you on KZbin amidst being in quarantine during the pandemic... However, as a formal professional portrait and bar mitzvah photographer in New Jersey (just outside of NYC), I've taken this lock down time to focus on archiving my own family history and have been literally streaming your philosophy and other videos non-stop as I've worked every free minute to scan over a 100 years of pictures. Your are inspiring and probably the most on point presenter I've come across on KZbin. Continue to follow your heart. Thank you!
