Interestingly, this has been entirely changed in the new production with Kristin Chenoweth and Peter Gallagher. All of the lyrics have been changed to a ballad, "Because of Her," in which Oscar recounts his love for Lily. But to all Ot20C fans: go see the new production. Kristin Chenoweth steals the show and it's well worth the price of admission.

We just bought tickets for April. I'm so disappointed to hear they left this out of the show. What were they thinking? This actor's fund concert is great. There a post from this production showing "She's A Nut" which is very funny. I hope I enjoy the Kristen Chenoweth production as much as this one.

joey w I think the change was to bring the story around to reconciling Oscar and Lily. I saw the new production last Sunday and it was pretty good, especially for the third preview performance--but there are a few kinks they need to iron out. I saw the original with Madeline Kahn right when it opened and the version is much more Lily-focused but otherwise comparable. BTW, you can buy the Actor's Fund DVD at operaddiction.com

joey w The song is still in the show, and only about half the lyrics are changed (starting with "To you I leave...). I was skeptical, but the new lyrics are actually funnier than the original.

The song was cut in the new production because director Scott Ellis thought it was just a 'list' song with too many references that would not be known to today's audiences. Big mistake. When will hacks stop playing with solid gold?

That is Douglas Sills. The woman that played Lily in this production was the late, great, Marin Mazzie.

well....if they cut this because no one will know the references they would have to cut most of Anything Goes, especially You're the Top! I have to say as someone who has only seen the bits on KZbin I cannot understand why the cast of this SUPERB performance didn't do the revival. The clips look like hard work of the new one - sorry.

Brilliant performance of the song...vocally and dramatically...is the key raised from the original with John Cullum?

He doesn't have the grandiloquence that Oscar needs, that John Collum provided galore.
