For anyone wondering, this series has a long history of delayed western releases. Both this game and its predecessor have been out for ages in japan, its just only now coming over, hence why the releases are so close together.

Honest thank you for the information, I was confused for a moment there since the first one literally just released. 😅 Aside question, do you need to play any of the other games to play the first one of this? I have never played any of these games, yet they look like I would enjoy them, but I don’t know where to start with this series 😅

@xeveemon while there's some minor references you won't get and a small amount of returning characters, Daybreak is a perfectly fine starting point as it mostly follows its own plot and it's own cast. If you're mostly only a switch user, it's your best choice for a starting game since the other two best options aren't available on switch and one of them isn't avaliable on modern consoles besides PC.

​@@xeveemon Yes this series is very connected and has an overarching story. Ideally you want to start with Trails in the Sky FC but if you want to play something newer then Daybreak 1 is a decent start! I started out of order myself and I love the series so do whatever is the most fun for you!

Just don't start midway through an arc, that's a terrible idea. If the game has a 2 or a 3 or a 4 in its name avoid it till you've played the first game and move up. Arcs are generally relatively self contained and understandable as long as you play the games in said arc in order.

Hope you have fun! Be very careful with trails burnout though, those games get very long (mostly with the CS games, I’ve put between 70-120 hours on a single playthrough), and some of the series get very very samey after a while. Make sure to take breaks, but hope you enjoy them :)

Just don't let FOMO get to you, just go at your own pace and eventually you'll be all caught up, NISA takes forever to localize these games anyway. Savor the series and take breaks whenever you start to feel burnout, series is an absolute blast and full of masterpiece storytelling.

Well... there's the sky trilogy, the Crossbell duology (Zero/Azure), Cold Steel 1-4, Reverie, and now Daybreak 1 & 2. That makes 12 games and I don't think any of them are short... I'm just now realizing this series is like the video game equivalent to One Piece, good god.

Daybreak came out today, Ys: X Nordics is out in October and Daybreak 2 launches in Early 2025. If we by some miracle get Kai late 2025/early 2026 then it’d be the first time since the franchise began in 2002 that international audiences are caught up to the original’s release. All this being said there is now a small possibility that the Final Saga for Trails will POTENTIALLY be launched worldwide simultaneously.

Assuming Kai doesn’t release before “early 2025” then western audiences will be caught up as soon as Daybreak 2 releases. Good point about worldwide release though. If they release Kai in late 2025 and target a western release for mid 2026, and leave a gap of a year and a half or so between Kai and the next game, that does leave enough time for both regions where a worldwide release would be sensible - though it would require Falcom to share the scripts internationally pre-release

Dont let these comments daunt you , Its perfectly fine to start with day break since its a completely new arc, while major events will be spoiled to you from previous games, if your interested enough of those events and characters you can always go back and play the previous arcs.

Start with Trails in the Sky. The entire series is on steam (and on sale with the summer sale). There is also the EVO voice mod for the Sky games which adds in the japanese VA from the Evolution releases.

You can start there, but you'll miss a lot of references. They openly spoil the huge plot twists of previous games. Its an okay starting point, but Cold Steel 1 or Sky FC are the best.
