He was a player that came out of the draft 20 years too early. If he was a modern player he would have benefited tremendously from the new QB running games like the RPO. He also would have benefited from having today's coaches that understand a mobile quarterback much better.

I always said history will be infinitely kinder to Kordell than the haters in the Pittsburgh faithful. He endured more ticky tack rumors and racist driven hate mongering than any quarterback in my lifetime. I Loved Kordell. Saw him play in both of those AFC Championship seasons live in person. Saw a lot of his regular season games too and all of his home playoff games. I remember many a day, between him and the Bus, we would be dominating teams so heavily in the 4th quarter, that I would catch the last 5 minutes on the ferry, with a Jack n Coke, listening to Bill and Myron kabitz on the radio, waiting to get taken back to the parking lot in Station Square on the Southside.

I think we could all agree that Kordell was a player before his time. Imagine him playing in today's wide open offenses? He was called "SLASH" for a reason because he did it all! He could run, he could pass, he could play WR and heck I think he even punted at one point too! The thing is, we can all agree he was super talented and have game changing skills and abilities. Not to make excuses for him but he had numerous coordinators at one point as guys left to take on either head coaching jobs elsewhere since "HE" directly or indirectly helped them get those gigs. Kordell's only failure was not being able to win in the playoffs and let me tell you as gut wrenching as it was to lose to Denver at home and to New England at home, he was not the play caller. Not all of those errors were on him. Sure, he was the pulling the trigger but I have watched some of those games and in hind site, the coach was managing Kordell and not fully letting him do his thing! If anybody remembers Marty Schottenheimer, he always put together great teams and great regular season records but come PLAYOFFS, the was different. To some degree. Coach Cowher did the same and coached the game not to lose instead of trying to win the game! Kordell played in a time when the Steelers were a run on 1st, 2nd downs and then chuck the ball on 3rd. We challenged defenses to stop the BUS and let our defense to out there and punish and play behind what I would call a short lead. Perfect examples again are the losses in the playoffs while holding small leads! When Kordell was allowed to be KORDELL, he was awesome! His playoff record and TD to INT ration will always be the reason why he is not looked at as a great QB in Pittsburgh. I for one, see him for what he hwas and that was a super multi-tallented player that always did what was asked of him and more! He revolutionized the QB play in the late 90s and made teams look at player like him in totally different manner! If Kordell was playing today, we would be having all sorts of other conversations. Kordell, once a STEELER, Always a STEELER! You are still very much appreciated and loved in the BURGH! Will always be remembered by me as a Steeler Great!!!

While you can point to other, earlier rushing QB's like Randall Cunningham, Warren Moon, etc...I think the emergence of the dual-threat QB started w/Slash. A QB who can throw 70+ yds in the air while breaking off 80yd TD runs thanks to his 4.4sec 40yd speed, having career seasons w/21 passing TD's while rushing for 11 more, Slash was one of the most explosive & entertaining players I've ever seen. If I didn't know any better, I'd think that Slash was Lamar Jackson's distant relative...completely untouchable in the regular season, but unable to win the big game in the post-season. Whatever the case, Slash broke the mold for all the dual-threat QB's who would later follow in his shoes.

Kordell Stewart. In other words. How not to manage and develop a young QB. He took a lot of unfair heat for the lean years of 1998-2000, but it wasn’t his fault. The 90’s Steelers were hemmoraging talent from free agency and Cowher never truly respected him. Stewart was banned from QB meetings. Four different offensive coordinators in five years. Ben didn’t get his fourth offensive coordinator until his 15th year in the league. He managed to put together one more solid year in 2001, but by then the damage was done.

Kordell's only flaw, and it came to haunt him, was trying to do too much with his arm in the huge situations......2001 AFC Title game second half. But given that the OC and the plays he was running were not tailored to his style, but more to a normal drop back passer, its not entirely his fault. He just came 15-20 years too early. Imagine him and Randall Cunningham in today's offensive systems....

How did the Cowher Steelers always get outcoached in the postseason? They let the other team’s offense dictate their incredible defense and through lack of an offensive game plan, they allowed the defenses to dictate that Stewart throw long in order to win the game. He rarely had decent wide receivers to work with, Still shaking my head.... Stewart was hard as nails. He took incredible shots. I only saw him unable to get up one time.

If Cowher had just believed in him, Kordell would have had a fantastic career. But between the rotating door at OC, Kordell being on a short leash, and being forced back into the Slash role, it never happened.

Damn I wish Cowher would have been the head coach like 5 years earlier. He only had like 12 seasons.

With the kind of intensity Bill Cowher brought to the sidelines, not sure he could've lasted another 5 yrs. 12yrs was enough..he had a wonderful run as coach overall.

2 minutes into the video and I'm falling asleep. I was a Steeler fan at this time. Still am. Slash was a disappointment. Not clutch at all. Running quarterbacks always fail. Just like Vick. I repeat, running quarterbacks ALWAYS fail. Go Steelers!

Taysom Hill is Slash reborn. Kordell Stewart paved the way for Taysom Hill. People seem to forget that.

Kordell Stewart came to the Steelers at the wrong time. The Steelers didn't have the tools needed to give Kordell a chance to be a super bowl champ. He had the talent to get there, just not the team.

His downfall started when they tried to suppress his running and make him a pocket QB

I hated the Kordell Stewart era. I couldn't wait for it to end. The coaches should have kept him 'slash'. Never a starter at QB.

And I was wondered this at 1997 let's say that if the steelers decided to have a season where they tanked on purpose finished dead last so then go in the 1998 NFL draft and they drafted Peyton Manning to the steelers I think that would have been one of the greatest dynasties of all time 1 that would have even showed up the New England Patriots.

Fun to watch. Actually, LOVED watchin' SLASH & listenin' to Myron get worked up, BUUTTT choked 2 AFC Championship games, so it's bitter sweet. Then again, Big Ben's choked more playoff games than Slash & he's Pittsburgh's Golden Child, so I say, BRING BACK SLASH!!! He's prob faster in a wheelchair than Ben anyway.

@@elchingonracinggarage4649 1st off, I live & die Steelers football, so watch urself, I'm anything BUT a hater...but facts r facts. Ben's been to 3 SB's. U know how many of those games he actually didn't suck in?? 1, that's it. Even he said he played like ass in SB 40. Don't get me wrong, I'm constantly arguing that Ben's name needs to be included in the convo w/Aaron Rogers, Drew Brees...actually ANY QB that's still playin', ('cept Brady, as much as it pains me to say it) I'd take Ben 6 days a wk & twice on Sunday's...but u can't deny that while he's had some HUGE playoff wins, he's had some absolutely GOD-AWFUL post season performances, i.e. vs. the Pats, TWICE, vs. the Jags, vs. the Broncos, TWICE...lemme know when I should stop. Plus, no NFL QB has done LESS W/MORE TALENT than Ben. Ur argument that Ima hater is based on Ben's 2 rings. U know who else has 2 rings?? Eli Manning. Are u gonna sit there & tell me he's still an elite QB just cuz he has 2 rings?? C'mon now. If u don't agree than fine, let's jus agree to disagree.

7 ints in two playoff games...athletic? Yes. Legend? No. His insistence on remaining a qb was his downfall. He was arguably the second, perhaps even best wr on the Steelers. Had he accepted the conversion, he could've played for a decade or more as a starting wr. Had really good numbers and woulda made more $ in the long run. Now he is known as a below average qb that could run. One good year is not much of a legacy.
