When this episode came out, it started a fan theory that Zaheer studied Airbending philosophy and forms so much because he was planning on being the one to teach young Korra to airbend.(since obviously back then they couldn't get a real Airbender to join the Red Lotus lol). I like this theory cuz it further explains why Zaheer was so good at Airbending right after he got it!

This is the episode made me understand the whole story with Zaheer and even Unalaq. At first I didn't understand how was Zaheer so good at Airbending right away or were the heck he knows so much. After thinking about it, everything clicked together so well it's crazy I never noticed that before. First of all, this episode gives us a lot of close ups of Zaheer's head. Notice the scars that are all over his head and eyebrow, they look like sword slashes. And he has cauliflower ears, which are very common with MMA fighters. These details indicate that Zaheer is a great martial artist and probably did a lot of battle before becoming a bender. Second of all, the Red Lotus obviously have a lot in common with the White Lotus. In Avatar we learned that members of the WL share their culture, knowledge, techniques, spirituality and etc. The RL does the same. So that's how Zaheer learned about the Air nation culture and bending techniques. He really connected to there ideology but radicalized it. Another interesting detail is when Zaheer told Korra about the kidnapping plan and how they wanted to train her with the RL members as her elemental masters. It's easy to find water, earth or fire teachers.. but who would've taught her Air? Maybe that's were Zaheer comes into play. Zaheer was probably sopouse to be her Airbending teacher. This episode also beautifully connects season 2 and 3. Unalaq makes so much more sense now. I love it.

Fun Facts: Team Avatar is wanted in the Earth Kingdom due to their liberation of the Earth Queen's elite airbending army in "In Harm's Way". The mugshots used in the wanted posters are the same mugshots obtained by the Metalbending Police Force from the various instances when the members of Team Avatar were arrested. Korra was arrested for causing significant damage to commercial property while fighting against members of the Triple Threat Triad in "Welcome to Republic City". Asami and Bolin were arrested by Tarrlok during a lockdown of the Dragon Flats borough in "When Extremes Meet". Although Mako was also arrested in the incident above, his mugshot was taken from his arrest for allegedly bombing the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center and stealing Future Industries property in "The Guide".

So Zaheer studied the air nomads and airbending so he could become the next best thing to a real airbending teacher. They wanted to raise, train, and brainwash their own fully realized avatar. That's why they attempted to kidnap her as a child. He says it was Unaloc's plan, but he seems to be very committed to his role.

"The natural order is disorder" this is why zaheer is such a good antagonist. Even though in terms of society it can be evaluated to be objectively bad to have a chaotic environment or at least worse than an ordered one (because lets be honest ordered isn't always great sometimes) but from a naturalistic scientific perspective the natural order of the behavior of systems is disorder. This is true even in physics (cosmology) that during the early universe entropy (the amount of disorder in a thermodynamic system) was lower than now meaning it was more ordered. As time goes on entropy inevitably INCREASES and according to the second law of thermodynamics entropy only increases meaning that as time progresses systems will naturally and inevitably all become disordered, or from zaheers philosophy "the natural order is disorder". Excellently said

This is why I love Zaheer. Remember the explanation Iroh gave Zuko about the 4 Elements? _It's important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding other elements and the other nations will help you to become whole._ If you think about it, the entire philosophy of Zaheer is only based on the thoughts of Guru Laghima, totally contradicting Iroh. He even gets to misunderstand him. Guru Laghima had anarchist thoughts, but the Air Nomads did not have a government like the other nations, so his way of thinking would apply only to them. Also, he was a pacifist, I don't think he was looking for a way to impart his philosophy by force.

Yes i think that's where zaheer loses most people he tries to force his ideals on the world. And it's hypocritical to do so you hate power structures but you want to use power to enforce chaos. And that's not to discount his goals or their validity. But methods do matter. Maybe he could of worked through the white lotus to become a mentor and advisor. Showing the avatar a better path isn't the worst plan but kidnapping her and destroying order entirely isn't the best PR strategy

Also, there is something called the tyrant axiom's or something like that, that state that however your views, trying to impose your views of the world to others; even if you think it is for their good, is already acting tyranically. So, by acting on his ideals, Zaheer is enfonrcing tyrannically his own beliefs unto others, and became the very thing he try to prevents. His philosophy is flawed.

My daughter, who self identifies as an Anarchist-Communist, might well be part of the Red Lotus if she was in that world. Zaheer's speech is a wakeup call to how everyone see airbenders. Their value of freedom is not gonna be limited by the restraints of order and bureaucracy. A lot more of them are like Laghima than we realize, we pretty much have only Aang and his descendants as examples of airbender culture, but it's hinted (even more strongly in the Rise and Shadow of Kyoshi books) that the Air Nations are more diverse in ideologies (also see how Yangchen advised Aang about the kill or not to kill debacle) than it's shown. This episode also "explains" why Zaheer is such a good Airbender without ever having it prior to Harmonic Convergence. Because the Red Lotus' original intention was to have elemental masters for Korra, with the only actual Airbenders being affiliated with the White Lotus, Zaheer most likely prepared to be Korra's Airbending master by learning the different forms and what not of Airbending. He most likely had all the theory and traditions already known since he was such an avid follower of Laghima, most likely another reason why he's so spiritually attuned.
