Something that always hits me about Korra’s recovery journey: Ever since her poisoning, people were telling her “Don’t worry about the world. We’ve got this. You don’t need to worry about anything but getting better. We can handle everything for you while you’re away.” It was all well-meaning, but I’m not sure it was what Korra needed to hear. To her it probably sounded more like this: “We can handle everything without you. We don’t need you. The world will be okay without you.” We know from her response to her friends letter that she saw her self worth dwindling while her friends were off helping the world and she was still stuck in a wheelchair. A person needs to feel needed. Then the Airbender kids show up, and tell her that they need her. I believe that was exactly the push she needed to step forward and get past her current block. I think it’s beautiful.

Now that you are already close to episode 8, it seems necessary for you that you learn the story of how that episode was generated, so you do not take a disappointment. At this point of the show, Nickelodeon wanted to get rid of Korra. Episodes no longer premiered on television but on the Internet (in a time where the streaming was not so popular and taking a television program and sending it to the internet was synonym of death) and the study reduced the Budget of the series to the minimum (That is why there are characters that no longer appear - like Kaya- or others whose participation was completely reduced - as Bumi or Kai-). Originally episode 8 was going to count the origin of Kuvira, but only counted on budget for 12 episodes. The creators wanting the season to have 13 episodes like the previous one, that's why they had the idea of doing a recap to show how the characters had changed throughout the four seasons. That episode would be the equivalent of the actors on Ember Island. However, there was no money for more, for that reason they chose to take clips of the whole series and put an episode with them plus some new scenes. I hope you know how to appreciate the effort beyond the result since, as Varrick says at the end of the episode "never let reality prevent you from telling a good story."
@Aoitetsugakusha3 жыл бұрын
That information doesn't sound quite correct. It's true Nick basically bounced the series from airing on TV to airing online, in addition to screwing around with the release schedule in general, but those decisions were completely separate from and made well after production of the episode and the budget changes. Book 4 did have its budget reduced, to the tune of an entire episode, but production on everything was finished before the final Book started airing.

@@marioalbertomoreno3819 That's true, episode order isn't necessarily production order, but starting to air the season early wouldn't have been a feasible solution if they didn't have a contiguous set of episodes done for almost the entire season. @@Aoitetsugakusha I think that in an interview they said something about having troubles keeping up with the given schedule (?), I don't remember the words so I'm willing to take it with a grain of salt, but overall you can see how the animation took a little easier approach, the characters don't move that much and certainly not a lot of sudden movements (with withstanding exceptions obviously, that fights against Kuvira are a delight) and there's way more CGI in the season, "cheaper" animation in the sense that they didn't need to draw those things separately, just make a 3D model of them and copy-paste

And Appa and his friends being in constant danger, Katara getting captured and nearly defeated by Zuko and Azula, losing Ba Sing Se...and just wrangling with all this stuff and all these deadlines at such a young age....but, he had the mental tools to handle it. He had a great advantage being born to the the original Air Nomads. I always say Aang represents them all in that show...and the real world inspiration(s) of Tibetan Buddhism....and so, he experiences the extremes of human emotion, struggle and weakness, especially as a young boy, but he has the best mental and spiritual capabilities to deal with it. But it shouldn't slip anyone's mind that it's this everyday battle.....something that Legend of Korra really highlights. Let's not forget that THIS is a unique show in that there's a major threat Korra gets tangled up in EVERY season....which is directly tied to the production issues the show suffered. They HAD to write things this way.....and then, at the end, they had to tie it all together and address how Korra has just dealt with all this shit. And it is also the unspoken goal of a sequel series to up the ante! Some Avatars we will never know.....but some had one or two major threats, and some had less, but they all had to deal with the politics of the world, and make decisions on a global scale and deal with their position.

I'm so glad that much is clear! This is the third time I edit this hahaha but I also almost forget: I hadn't realize the meaning about Korra fighting the poison the way she kept fighting her former enemies. I think she was never entirely satisfied with her actions and blamed herself for that. It makes sense, since she was doubting her self worth so much, she was internally fighting all of her previous "failures", holding onto them, and also not letting herself feel the emotions it all caused to her. The way Toph instructed her to get the poison out strikes me as very similar to the process of dealing with any human emotion in real life. She was basically helping her get through the phases of grief of her battles.

I'm so so happy to hear you guys acknowledge and appreciate the character growth in this show. That's the thing that pisses me off about Avatar Genwunners, are that the settings and situations are completely different. Aang was raised by monks prior to the 100 year war, and then was thrown into the tail end of the 100 year war when things were at their worst. Both those things encourage someone to develop emotionally much faster, especially war time. Korra however, was sheltered and spoiled up until she made it to Republic City, and she knew from a very early age that as the Avatar, she was going to be one of the top 5 most important people in the world for her entire life, so that gave her a bit of a big head, and the idea that basically whatever she said, undoubtedly, people would follow. Even regular kids, who are not important, who are not sheltered, who are not spoiled, but grow up in peace time, like the new Avatar gang, tend to be brattier and more immature. I said in the comments for the first episode of Korra that you reacted to, you were going to be shocked by ALL the characters growth and development. Literally all the main characters are going to be completely different people from 1x1 to 4x13. It's night and day. But the point is in atla every character has more development and more focus because it's a show about all of them. Like these reactors said in the finale Lok is a show about korra and her villains that's the reason why they get more focus. I mean I never saw people ranting and criticizing ozai for how badly written he was just they rant about underdeveloped side characters in lok or aang being bad father or toph being a cop etc etc. You won't believe me 90 % of my friends who are atla fans suggested me not to watch this show calling lok a garbage and internet deemed this show as colossal failure with all the hate videos. Just type legend of korra and see how many hate videos you get on your time line. Which is why I didn't watch this show for 3 years until recently. My first reaction is that this show is no where close to being bad or avg. It's really solid show especially when you compare this to show with lot of shounen that last 100s of episodes With zero character development while korra had incredible heros journey in just 52 episodes. The point is people don't choose to nitpicking atla because it's beloved so they ignore the flaws. I understand pointing out flaws In lok and criticizing it but I never saw real appreciation for this show except 1or 2 videos and some reactors like these 2 girls. That's hardly fair criticism because a fair criticism should address positives and negatives. But most of the criticism for this show is basically one sided focusing on what's bad

@@sanathkomire4719 I don't think that LoK is an awful show, I enjoyed a lot about it. The difference between bad Charakters like Mako and Ozai is that Mako enjoys much more screen time. Ozai served his purpose of flashing out Azula, Zuko and the fire nation. His contrast to Iroh, Zukos Mother...he has a reason to be in this show. Mako well he is just hired muscle. I guess Korra finds her sexuality with his help but that's basically it. He has so much screen time, yet so unimportant. You can compare Unalaq with Ozai. Unalaq is so much worse why? Again too much screen time. The writers wanted him to be relatable in some ways but it didn't work - he's just evil - that's it. He is used to explain a little of backstory to Korra's father but even that - this backstory doesn't effect anything in the course of 4 seasons. Tonrak is just a good father that's it. He's basically a NPC. There are way too many NPCs in LoK. They're just existing. The problem with that is: You expect them to do something, to challenge your main protagonist but they don't. Ozai has little contact with the main crew. That's why he doesn't need to be that person. But at least he challenges Zuko. Zuko learns to speak against his own father. He grows and learns because of him.

There are several similarities between the time Team Avatar flew over the swamp in "The Swamp" and when the airbending children did so: A member of each team, namely Aang and Ikki, wanted to head down to the swamp with the other two members, Sokka/Katara and Jinora/Meelo respectively, disagreeing. When trying to resume their journey, both Appa and Pepper get pulled down into the swamp. When asked about the swamp, both Aang and Ikki reasoned that the swamp wanted them to land there.

this is one of my favourite episodes! just the entirety of the finals from season 3, the cause of the trauma and now a big relief of it is such a powerful depiction of both mental and physical health struggles and give her so much character growth along with the great music and animation it's simply stunning! the next few episodes are also cool but they are a bit less awesome and deep and ep8 is just a recap they had to do due to last minute budget cuts. but the final episodes are great again.
@chubbychuckle3 жыл бұрын
My only issue with the show is that there wasn't enough of it. I think it needed 3-5 more episodes each season to explore all the characters more, especially the villains. They all should have had stand alone episodes that showed how they got to where they were in the show. Unalaq definitely needed an explanation on how he was so connected to the spirts and how he first met Vatu.

Korra moved online toward the end of season 3. I believe it was the death of the earth queen by suffocation and the death of the combustion bender by having her head blown up by the metal. I believe in the case of both there was a an extra few seconds of footage that was edited out of more modern releases. For the combustion bender, the cut now feels really awkward since I believe the original cut showed several frames of the explosion coming out of the seams of the metal before cutting to shocked Zaheer. I guess there must have been some controversy or hesitancy to continue airing on the actual network and they finished airing online only.

Agreed. I think the writing of Korra was rough at times but I also think she's one of the highlights of the show. I just prefer Aang and the OG Team Avatar. (PS - I watched both shows semi-recently; did not grow up watching them so there's no nostalgia factor for me).

People don’t like korra because they don’t like her character. They want her to be humble, and innocent like aang. Basically they wanted another aang but don’t understand that every avatar before aang had different personalities dealing with different situations in different time periods. They see her as some spoiled whiney teen and they hate that regardless if she grows because they wanted her to be “not annoying” from the beginning. Also that she often makes the same mistakes until she learns not to do them anymore but….that’s what humans do they will mess up sometimes in the same way until they learn to move past it. Some claim korra hasn’t grown in some things still but again….that’s what humans do…..the avatar is human because in order to help people the avatar must understand them. The legend of Korra may not be as good as ATLA however by no means is it bad, it’s still good in its own way

Korra season 3 (was it the last half?) and 4 weren't released on TV because the episodes were leaked. So they decided to release them all online at once, with the excuse that they were always going to move online. I love this episode just becose how it explains the LOK villains, it shows they were kinda right but really too extremists. Honestly ATLA villains were good but without a good motive (Ozai and Azula were just the typical “I’am evil and need to rule the world” villains) but these villains have motives they were just unbalanced and chose the wrong way to execute them + all of them (except Kuvira) were much more dangerous and more powerful than ATLA villains so yeah Aang had it a bit easier in my opinion.
@Akagami-d7n3 жыл бұрын
Nah Korra is 100% going through traumatizing stuff but aang definitely did not have it easy, I mean one reason is that Korra could already bend 3 elements (and not just bend she probably could have mastered those 3) even before she was the age of aang in the show and she had family and parents while aang really didn’t
@lurker13163 жыл бұрын
I think children can handle pretty much anything in entertainment...if they have patient adults willing to explain and contextualize what they've seen. Explain that it is fiction, why it wouldn't be a good idea to do certain things in real life, and even offer some explanations for how the illusion is created.
@gemelwalters29423 жыл бұрын
Re the Korra and Asami discussion, I don't want to spoil anything but you are correct in that Nickolodeon was hesitant to show certain things on their network which is why a lot of these episodes were only shown online. As far as showing affections, I don't really get it since we saw Aang and Katara kissing and there was no uproar about that. The "dark" themes...suicide and mental health are where I can see things getting more complicated, although as you said I also saw far worse as a kid but often you don't really comprehend what you were watching until you're much older.

9:01 Ok, i gotta take issue with Aang had it easy part, like, the dude found out that he sleep for 100 years, and not only all of his love ones died but his entire people was massacrate, he was captured several times and was hunted by the entire fire nation since he woke up, he almost died by the hands of Azula,he had to struggle with saving the world and carrying that weight, and i am pretty sure i am forgetting some things and all that at the tender age of 12, so nop, i take issue with that part
@generaltoszur66893 жыл бұрын
enemies that korra fighted were much more difficult that azula or ozai . they were just firebenders while korra was fighting strongest bloodbenders evil spirits most dangerous criminals in the world and the worst dictator that ever existed
@Kobrakai213 жыл бұрын
It's just not productive to even have that conversation I think. Both Aang and Korra faced very difficult, but different problems during their journey, but one isn't necessarily better than the other based on the challenges they faced. I think a more interesting discussion to be had in regard to the problems they faced is how well suited they would be to solve the other's problem. Aang generally started off as the more empathetic, caring Avatar, which would've been a real benefit when dealing with the Equalists, with Unaloq, with Zaheer. Meanwhile, Korra started off as the aggressive, take-action type. She wanted a simple problem to focus on and wanted to tackle it head on, which would've been quite beneficial training to eventually face the Firelord. The beauty of it is that both Aang and Korra became better, more complete Avatars BECAUSE they had to deal with problems they weren't initially well equipped for. It forced them to grow as people, as Avatars.
