10:25 The important part here isn't that she doesn't have arms. It's that she's able to BEND without arms. Every bending style uses the arms a lot, but especially water bending has a lot of flowing and wave-y arm motions. She has no arms to do those motions. We've seen Bumi bend with just his face, yes, but he was an outlier and he probably still at least clenched his fists inside that coffin. Ming Hua being able to bend completely without arms to the level that she does is beyond impressive.

Question? Does it count as inventing or discovering? I remember people in ATLA basically saying that metalbending was a myth, but Toph proved it was possible. I thought inventing it would be taking something never thought of and making it possible, like Guru Laghima, but since metalbending was talked about and never done it was seen as a myth rather than a completely new concept. As the guru Aang talked to even mentioned that metal was just earth that had been purified. Again, just wondering where the line between inventing and discovering was. Edit: Other examples include the Air Scooter and Bloodbending.

In theory, it was always possible, but Toph had a heightened ability of sensing those impurities in the metal, and figured out herself that she could manipulate them. So she discovered it, and kind of invented it because her own gifts and abilities allowed her to be the first to utilize it and make it possible

@@sprocket403 Inventing is creating something that doesn't exist. Discovery is figuring out how to harness something that exists naturally. Humanity *discovered* electricity but *invented* electric lighting. For bending, specific moves, like the air scooter, certainly fall into the invention category, but sub-bending disciplines are a bit more ambiguous. We don't know enough about how bending actually works to say for certain which it would fall in. However, based on this episode explicitly stating that not all earth benders can metal bend, I think it would be more accurate to say that the sub-bending, like metal bending and blood bending, are probably discoveries. The potential likely always existed, but no one ever did them before.

​@sprocket403 I don't think Guru Lahima really invented flying, we see the early airbenders flying with ease when we are given the Wan flashbacks... I think the airbenders became more attached to each other and the world over time and lost this ability which was unlocked again by the Guru at a later time. I would say discovering and inventing can be similar in this case, yes she uncovered that it was possible but she also invented the technique necessary to wield it and utilize it.

ehhh not really, he was a non bender locked away in a secluded white lotus cell on the top of a mountain. he obviously had to be some sort of menace to end up there so all he had to do was apply air bending to the skills he already had. and he doesn’t move around like a natural, he fights like a savage you can see his way of airbending is far more aggressive and unhinged

Honestly I’m neutral cause I understand why Lin was mad for so long but also she was being a bit irrational because she took some of that anger out on Opal who had nothing to do with it. And with Su yeah she messed up and she’s aware of that. But at least she tried reaching out to Lin however she didn’t have to bring up Lin and Tenzins break up cause that just pissed Lin off even more. Which is why I liked that Opal stopped them from hurting each other even more and scolded them for fighting instead of immediately picking a side. Like this whole things a massive grey area because they are both kinda wrong in their own way

Su committed a crime, permanently scarred her sister and forced her mother to resign in disgrace but was never punished or even held accountable for it, got to live a happy life and any attempt at reconciliation was superficial at best considering she refuses to apologise or even acknowledge she was in the wrong

If you watch the avatar sircle in atla you can see that beside Roku there's a spot to Ang's statue and one spot to korra. And no more space to the "next" avatar. There's a theory out there somewhere that Suyin's father is actually Sokka. I mean...look at her facial features, it's kinda Sokka. Maybe something happened between Sokka and Suki, and Sokka hooked up with Toph for a sec. But, that's just a theory.....a film theory. By the way, 2nd theory: I wonder if deep down Lin associates the scar Su gave her with Tenzin breaking up with her. I feel like that would be so painful if she thought Tenzin lost interest in her because she thought the scar made her less attractive (and all these years she's been dealing with that insecurity). I don't think Tenzin is that shallow, but I find the insecurity about a physical scar very relatable. I love Lin.

Unpopular opinion but I was more on Lin’s side than Suyin. Always felt like Suyin got too high and mighty about her situation when it came at the cost of Toph retiring and scarring her sister.

I don’t believe it was why Toph retired. I think that was just Lin’s interpretation, but we find later that Lin hadn’t spoken with Toph in at least a decade or two either. Toph’s conversation with Korra about how she worked so hard as a cop and yet there were still criminals everywhere makes it seem more like she just got old and disillusioned with her work. All that being said, Su takes essentially no accountability for her past actions. The closest she comes to apologizing is when she and Lin agree she’d have probably been in jail if she’d stayed in the city. She mostly just goes “I’ve changed, why are you still angry?” And it is pretty frustrating.

Honestly, I wouldn’t get in the middle of a fight especially when it comes to the Two Daughters of Toph Beifong! The family drama in the Beifong Family is so problematic, you have Toph who was basically sheltered for most of her life and the minute she left home instead of supporting her, her dad basically disowned her for choosing her freedom. An even in this generation in her family, Toph tried to give kids the freedom that she never got to experience but sometimes too much freedom can lead to future consequences hence the fallout between Lin and Su. But luckily they made peace with everything.

There is nothing canon to back it up, but there is a popular fan theory that Sokka is Su's father. Toph had sort of a crush on Sokka and Su has a bit of Sokka's tendency for imaginative ideas and unorthodox methods. Canonically, there is a comic where Toph tried to teach Aang metal bending and Aang flunked. The armless water bending reminds me of Toph the blind earth bender. I don't see a lot of people make that comparison. Maybe it's so obvious people don't bother pointing that out.

Ah now we're in for the Beifong family drama segment of Season 3; Lin did not look good in these episodes, but Su needed to hit a nerve to get her to confront her issues, fighting each other to resolve their disputes is definitely the Beifong way. But that's 2 for 2 on siblings reconciling in front of their parents' statue

TBH I didn't notice she was armless for several episodes. In my defense, I rarely WATCH a series I'm binging. I always have a craft project going on. I look up when it sounds really interesting. I also didn't think the Avatar should be able to learn secondary bending. To go along with that, I didn't think the avatar should necessarily be the strongest bender of whatever element they weren't born with. So like, Aang could be the best Airbender of all airbenders ''granted, he was the only one of his era'' but I didn't think he should be the best firebender, or water etc...as well. Which seems to be the case, but I kind of wish it were more referenced. But all bending has elevated in Korra, so it seems even less likely the Avatar could be so OP. Like brand new bending is being developed, that even the past avatars were seemingly unaware of.
