@closeben4 жыл бұрын
Yea, Aang definitely did not blood bend.
@Yous01474 жыл бұрын
That's true and also acknowledged in the show. What made people feel awe towards Amon was how he seemed to be able to do the same as Aang did to Ozai. But in reality Amon just chi blocked using his ability to blood bend, which is more like doing what Ty Lee did using people's blood instead of direct contact. So it's like blocking the path for the energy to flow, whereas energy bending it working with the flowing energy directly, possibly drying up the reservoir or redirecting it entirely.
@XLE6IONX4 жыл бұрын
So two things you might want to know non-spoilers: 1. Amon and Aang take away bending in two different ways. Amon used blood bending to permanently block chi. Aang performed Energybending to directly effect the chi/chakras to take away bending. Aang gave Korra access to energybending which allowed her to fix her chi 2. The reason they did not leave Korra without her bending is because they couldn't get confirmation that they would get.a season 2. So they didn't want to end it with Korra defeated.
@alearnedman4 жыл бұрын
@@XLE6IONX Yeah, while I do get the criticism of the consequences that Korra suffered by losing her other elemental connections got undone too quickly, it really makes sense that it was able to be undone once she connected with her past lives. Because entering the Avatar state imbues you with the knowledge and experience of every past Avatar and Aang was able to energybend it follows that entering the state allows Korra to do so as well. And since she'd already been having visions/memories of things Aang had experienced earlier on in the season, it was kinda set up that she was building to being able to connect with him. And while having the double convenience of both unlocking airbending and connecting with her past lives right when she needed to, it also kinda makes sense in that finally being able to airbend was the final step in being able to connect with her previous life as an air nomad.

The biggest problem of the legend of korra is: " NIckelodeon" In short: -Nickelodeon should have given Brian and mike a green light to do 4 seasons. -nickelodeon cuts budget -nickelodeon messed up the airing time/method Season 1- Brian and mike(brike) were asked to make a season of korra, they were hoping for a green light to make more seasons and thus a better story. But Nickelodeon didn't gave them a green light for this, so they had to wrap all of the story in one season. Season 2- Brike was asked to make another season, but since they just wrapped up the story...they had to come up with a new one in relative little time. Season 3: they finally got green light for 2 extra seasons, Nickelodeon removed korra from the tv and made it online only. Season 4: NIckelodeon decided it was a good idea to cut of Brike their budget for korra. but still wanted the same amount of episodes from them. (brike actually handled this pretty good)

Korra's sheltered but eager to be the Avatar, dealing with post-war politics (the Equalist Movement) and what I consider to be the main question of the series: is the Avatar needed to keep balance anymore? And if not, or if the Avatar actually does more harm than good, where does that leave Korra, whose identity and fears revolve around being the Avatar. It's essentially the same question that Batman V Superman tried to tackle. Enter Asami, a non-bender proficient in hand-to-hand combat, the future head of Future Industries, (SPOILERS FOR BOOKS 2, 3, AND 4! LOOK AWAY!) one of the leading faces of the progressive Industrial Age Revolution that seems to be moving the world away from the mysticism and blind worship of the Avatar and the Spirits, AND with motive to be sympathetic to the Equalists Cause? It seems like she was set up to be the Lex Luthor Smallville-style frenemy to Korra's archaic spiritual Superman. The pieces were all there, and their interactions would directly affect their character arcs (and any other developments) as well as represent the central conflict of the Equalist Movement, the Red Lotus's motives (and really, the whole series). "I mediumed it." I agree. Also, a lot of the cool, rare bending like blood bending, metal bending, lightning, etc that only some amazing benders could do with a lot of training in the last airbender, just become commonplace in this one. For e.g., Mako and some workers just shoot lightning into machines in a factory for minimum wage. All the cops (or maybe just most, they never made that clear, I think) are metal benders. Blood bending is still rare enough, but mostly if it is not a full moon. All this bugged me a bit.

@Musomania27 I’m sorry, but Zuko would have known lightning bending if it was something that could just be taught to any old high schooler looking for a summer job. Toph also wouldn’t have been the first metal bender if you didn’t have to feel every element of the earth without looking at it. Someone would have figured out metal bending if it could be taught to people. I imagine you would have to see with your feet to metal bend and most people never had to delve into bending so much as to rely on it as a sense. The masters should all be able to learn metal bending but your average police officer shouldn’t. Blood bending should also only be possible during a full moon or at least only at night. Blood isn’t completely water so it makes sense that you wouldn’t be able to bend it unless you are incredibly powerful. These aren’t things that would change because the world is more connected and technology is more prominent. The peak of bending performance should not be treated like a common element.

There's that little moment where she goes into the avatar state and Katara has this super genuine little smile and it always tears me up so much because that little smile to me is Katara recognizing that Korra connected to her previous lives. Of course she feels good for Korra, but it also means her life-long love, which she had to live without for about sixteen years, is now back, helping Korra along her way. The feels! Anyway I agree with most of your points. The ending is quite rushed; this is most likely because the season was booked as a pilot and it might've never continued. If the next seasons weren't funded, it would've been nicest to just leave on a completed arc, a happy end. Be warned, season 2 has the same problem, but seasons 3 and 4 were booked as one whole deal and have a on-going arc which is much nicer. In general, as someone who has watched both shows half a dozen times, I can recommend considering its LOK its own thing. If you go into LOK with expections based on ATLA, it will never live up to them. However, watching it as something completely new has gotten me to appreciate even the earlier seasons. Regarding the ending of this season being the unsatisfying "and then she has them all again" thing (and, moving forward, the weird pace and lack of a unifying story in subsequent seasons)-I blame Nickelodeon. Korra was originally meant to be a mini-series, so this episode was meant to be the end. The second book wasn't ordered til the first was already well into production, and books 3 and 4 weren't ordered til book 2 was underway. If Nick had just ordered what they wanted from the start (or even if they had just ordered the first two together), we could have had a more unified storyline.
@Chaosm034 жыл бұрын
That and for the Last two seasons Nickelodeon really started screwing around with the airing schedule. Season 4 barely got aired on television and the last 4 episodes were kinda dumped on Nick.com without much fanfare.
@Yous01474 жыл бұрын
Well I beleive it's part of it and for the transition between season 1 and 2 it definitely did have a huge effect. But there are definitely huge things outside of that context that had hit the show pretty badly and besides that Season 1 had a lot of less than ideal aspects even just thinking of it as a single season show
@klaidas74094 жыл бұрын
Nah, you can't blame Nick for "and then she has them all again". that's purely on the writers. Say you're given 1 season of a show, 12-13 episodes, why would you make a story where the heroes powers are taken away towards the end. The only way you can resolve that in 2-3 episodes is by giving her back the powers, there is really no other way to do it. It's just really lazy writing and that's not really excusable. I feel for the writers, I really do, but it was their decision to take away her bending, they were ok with just giving her it all back.
@satinsleeves4 жыл бұрын
@@klaidas7409 Thank you!!! This was on the writers.
@Frozen_Death_Knight4 жыл бұрын
@@klaidas7409 There were always going to be problems with the 1st season because of the very short runtime and the high expectations set by The Last Airbender. 12-13 episodes are really not that much to create a continuation to one of the most lore heavy and critically acclaimed animated shows of all time. Korra losing her powers is conceptually a very compelling idea, but because of the very limited episode run it is inevitable that certain aspects are going to feel rushed about it. Sure, they could have gone a different route by not taking her powers away, but it was also one of the best aspects of season 1. How are you supposed to fix that without having more episodes to work with? That aspect of the show made Amon one of the best villains in Avatar. It also added some extra dimensions to Korra as a character because of her fear of losing her bending and how that fear formed her during the course of the story. I don't think it is fair to call it lazy writing when it's what gave the story depth. Even just one or two more episodes would have done a lot to help fix whatever pacing issues Book 1 had, which really makes you wonder what the heads of Nickelodeon were thinking when greenlighting such a small project as a continuation to one of their most popular shows of all time. The original Avatar had around 20 episodes per season, which is not far off from double the amount of Book 1 of Korra. Imagine if the original show got that kind of treatment with only season 1 being guaranteed to enter production with zero room for filler to help pace out the story to not feel rushed. We would likely not be talking about The Last Airbender as a masterpiece and instead think of it as a very good but flawed show which had production issues and a bunch of missed potential because of the limited budget and episodes per season. Frankly, Korra deserves more credit for managing to stay as good and coherent as it did considering the amount of limitations it had since its inception.

@Gary Wright @Ken Osiris Exactly both of you are right. What was so shocking about Amon was his ability to seemingly do the very same thing Aang did to Ozai. Well, I think the difference is Aang wanted to help people and be the best person he could regardless of his Avatar status. He didn't want to be the center of attention all the time or put on a pedestal. Watching Korra it feels more like she puts so much stock in being the Avatar because she wants people to need her. She wants to feel important. We could have a whole discussion about the psychology of that, but it seems as if she does things for the praise and admiration she feels she is entitled to as the Avatar rather than because she feels what she's doing is for the benefit of others (most of the time).

Amon was cool but my favorite had to be Zaheer. Korra and the gang on the other hand... They just didn’t do it for me. Korra wasn’t even that likable to begin with and the rest of the cast were undercooked characters with undercooked relationships. You can tell the writers were really tryharding to create engagement by pandering to the fandom’s shipping culture and as a result everyone had at minimum a crush on or a relationship with everyone else in the group at some point, instead of the writers putting their energy into writing overarching, earned, actually satisfying romances. In the end they didn’t even have a plan of their own, they just went with what was more popular among fans and the show felt like there wasn’t a coherent vision or identity behind it. You are free to enjoy LoK more than ATLA all you want, but to claim it’s a better show? Nah fam, the writing wasn’t nearly as good.

I almost wish they would have played into the “raised as the Avatar” more, like a “raised to be a weapon” kind of thing, and just being dreadful socially. I think it would have contrasted nicely with how friendly and natural Aang was in social situations. Korra could have been more of a awkward robot which I think would have been funny, but also given her more of a interesting flaw then “bullheaded”. Korra of course would still be a bad a** without being so shallow (at least in the beginning, she definitely was more interesting after the 3rd season). I know they were kind of trying to make Korra like a new Kyoshi, but they missed out on what made Kyoshi cool. Kyoshi - for the most part - is a stoic bad a**. Korra was mostly just a hot headed hooligan. Moments that would have made her cool just fell flat sometimes because she was just being such a thick-headed bull that sees red. It separates her from the audience in a bad way. :(

Very excited for Merph's take on book 3. My overall/nonspecific thoughts on Korra are that it's a more uneven show, partly due to being 4 stories told in half size seasons rather than one big one, and with twice as many recurring characters sharing that smaller runtime. But while it may stumble at some things the originals did better, it does gain new strengths the original didn't as well. In particular the philosophical challenge each season poses and demands a resolution to. And touching more on some of the topics stuff like The Promise broached as well such as shifting cultural heritage over generations, self-assimilation, post colonialism, neutrality vs being complicit with injustice .etc Ultimately branching out into these topics gave it a good personal resonance with me even if they aren't all primary themes.
@noelle37804 жыл бұрын
Personally, I really don't like how bloodbending was handled in Korra. The whole "this specific family can use it whenever" didn't sit well with me. Why did they change the established rules in atla with no other explanation? I think it would've been smarter if they'd had Amon hold rallies on full moons or something, so they wouldn't need to tie in some arbitrary family line to justify it.
@AgentOrange887854 жыл бұрын
Yea, I feel like that is one of the major issues with the series as a whole. There are lore breaking elements that really don’t make sense. Like being able to blood bend whenever.
@shift98944 жыл бұрын
I thought their explanation was mostly because the guy had learned to do it during the full moon and then while his kids where really young he taught them constantly so they became better at it than most and eventually learned to do it anytime. Something like it was drilled not them since they were kids.
@Qupatroo4 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree, Hama said that she can only bloodbend with a full moon because you need to be really powerful in order to do it and at full moon they’re the strongest. But if you really master it it makes sense that you are able to use it with a bit less of a power boost right and then eventually whenever you want
@rohhaiil4 жыл бұрын
I agree with nonexistent. Really a bloodbender like Amon becomes unstoppable with that amount of power, it becomes essentially impossible for a way to defeat him which leads to weird ways of solving the conflict (e.g. the way Korra unlocks her Air bending and the since Amon is a bender every one knows the truth and problem solved)

In my personal opinion, Avatar's seasons, in order of greatness, are: A2: Earth: lots of great characterization, holds tension that Water overall lacked. A3: Fire: excessive amounts of filler, but we also had the final battle and Zuko's redemption arc. K3: Change: I'm just a big fan of the members of the Red Lotus. The first time that there were major consequences that had to be endured rather than solved. A1: Water: A big portion of the first season was much more child-directed, and it had a much more meandering pace than the other seasons. K1: Air: We get to directly learn a lot more about Amon than we ever knew about Ozai. Makes him much more engaging. However, as you said, suffers from poor characterization. K4: Balance: Honestly, I don't remember most of Balance. I know Korra deals with PTSD, fights a giant mech that was honestly pretty lame, and comes out as bi, but that's about it. K2: Spirits: Villains had little depth, confusing character arcs, and they royally messed up the magic system.

Hiya! Love your analysis. Just wanted to add - Aang doesn't blood bend to remove bending, he energy bends. Amon's method of removing bending is, more or less, like a long term chi blocking that he does through his very powerful blood bending. Aang energy bends to completely remove bending, and Korra uses it to life the blocks.

With Korra, its like season 1 of ATLA. You have to watch and see Season 1 & 2 of Korra to understand Season 3 & 4. There are really great parts of S1 & 2 but oh boy S3-4 are definitely of quality level with ATLA. Also, Nickelodeon really gave them hell, pushing some HEAVY creative control onto the team. So each season had to be treated as an individual season, bc Nickelodeon could cancel the show at any minute. Its a sad position for the creative team to be in.
@justincain27024 жыл бұрын
I think even though the pacing in s1 of ATLA was a bit off, it was still really well written overall and set up the characters and plot really well. It also kept the rules of the world consistent and believable. I cant really say the same for korra. S1 and s2 retcon a ton of lore and dont really set much up for s3 and s4 as far as i can remember. The last 2 seasons are still pretty great, although i'd prefer to just rewatch ATLA.

That's the major downside to Korra is that Nick didn't really know what the Avatar world needed in terms of planning and they didn't give the creators enough time to tell their story. I would say what I didn't like about the ending of the series but I don't want to spoil it for Murphy in case she's reading this but in her overall review of the series I hope she sees that had Nick given the creators enough time both in the planning and the number of episodes they could have flush out the ending of the series better.

Season 2 is going to suck worse but you will LOVE the lore. Season 3 has a lot of what you are looking for. Season 4 has Robin Williams' daughter so like that that's great. . But yeah, the showrunners didn't really seem like they knew what to do with air. As I posted on I think your last video ("which bender are you?"), they had a love affair with Earth. I can stretch the story to make it somewhat fit my idea of how airbending would be "learned" or "triggered". "At our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change" is a bit of a hint, there. . Basically, while earthbending involves finally taking the world around you head-on, airbending would more often be discovered when everything you know is flipped on its head. Korra main source of personal identity came from bending and that was taken away, so her entire identity was stripped away and she had to find something new. A bit of a stretch. And of course it resulted in punching air like we see so much of which is a very ineffective way of using the element. . Other examples might be running away after discovering your "parents" turned out to be a random couple who killed your real parents to kidnap you. It is all about that feeling when you are going down the stairs and think you've reached the bottom but realize there is another step. Take that feeling of your stomach flipping and get stuck in that moment. . Another could come from freedom and breaking away from restriction. Under pressure, air becomes hot and exerts a force. You might think you are a fire until you get out of that situation and get out on your own.. . Or it could come from dodging responsibility. . In other words, if Simba was an airbender, he would have had 3 different opportunities to discover it throughout his arc. When he runs off as a kid. When his dad dies. When he joins Timon and Pumba.

Korra is energybending, which she can do in the Avatar state because Aang knew how to. So in a way, it was Aang giving people their bending back. Also, remember that when they made this first season they weren't sure they were going to get to make any more. I would recommend finishing it, season 3 and 4 are good, although I agree with you... The main cast is not fun to watch and Korra isn't very compelling. The reason I liked season 3 is because of the villains, and season 4 as well. Korra never really felt like an Avatar to me. But I always wondered, what if we were shown Kyoshi like this? Would we have hated her too? Probably not because we knew what she became and how much of a badass she was and didn't give a fuck. Everyone loved Kyoshi, so why is it we hate Korra? It's pretty weird to think about it like that, but I think it's because we would already know Kyoshi and love her so we'd be like ''Damn it Kyoshi just listen but it's okay because she eventually turns into a giant badass woman''. With Korra it's kinda like, we don't know if she'll change and it's in the future compared to ATLA, so we're gonna compare her to Aang and wanna see him etc. Personally I think this character would've worked, but not for someone new, because it feels like she's an arrogant prick who doesn't deserve the spotlight as main character. For someone we already know it would be different, but it's still weird to think about it like that. Anyway, I'd recommend you do finish the show because it gets better and imo season 3/4 were worth watching, but compared to ATLA it was disappointing, and this is because of Nickelodeon, not the writers.
