Don't we only hear Kya's name one time in atla, when Hakoda calls out her name during the raid when she was killed? I feel it is a much more niche reference than Bumi, who is one of the most famous characters on the show. Lightning bending was only rare because it was a Royal secret. This was explained in the comics. It is now public knowledge and publicly trained thanks to Firelord Zuko Metal bending is now common for a similar reason. Def check out the comics

Another thing I love about this series is that we get to see the evolution of bending: Metal bending becomes common practice among the highly trained police force. In a time of Industrial Revolution, lightning bending has become a function of society that many people have developed for the sake of work. Chi blocking is a practice that can be trained and is becoming common in an insurgent, bending fearing world. I love the world building and development that this show gives :D

There is nothing in atla saying that you have to be born with metal, lightning or lave bending, it seems like something that you can just learn as long as you have the element for it. Also in Lok how powerful you are seems to be based on who's child you are while in atla it is based on the learning. Katara was the child of two non benders, she became super good by practicing. This does not seem to be the case in Lok. Lok is alright (more then the 2 season) but it does not seem to follow the same rules for bending.

As you go through the series, keep in mind that the creators weren't able to plan out the entire series from the beginning. They were only approved for one season at first. Then they were approved to do a second season after the first one did well. And THEN they were approved for the two final seasons. Then in season 3 they were pulled from airing on TV and episodes from that point forward were only shown online. And then they had major budget cuts in season 4. So nothing went smoothly. The creators weren't able to make the series the way they wanted because of so many roadblocks from the network, and the results from that end up being the cause for a lot of the complaints people have of the series.

My favorite difference that instantly set Korra and Aang apart was that he had to struggle to learn the other elements, and Korra is a prodigy. It shows in the first scene of this show what we were shown in ATLA, every avatar is wildly different and each their own person. I love it ❤

Aang only struggled with earthbending. The other elements were pretty easy for him. I mean, he was already a master of airbending at the age of 12, could waterbend without training or help from a teacher and learned firebending before earthbending. On the contrary, knowing how to do the bending and mastering it are completely different things. Korra knows how to bend the elements, but she didn't master them the same way Aang did. Aang mastered bending at a deep level, he bend each element as if he were a member of that nation, largely thanks to the masters he had, learning the original style of Earth bending from Toph who learned from the earth animals, and fire bending with Zuko and the dragons. While Korra was trained from the beginning by the best teachers, she does all the bends the same way, look at her air bending, she bends air as if she were bending earth and fire, the only bending of hers that she does differently is water, all this because her focus is power and fighting, she doesn't think about the complete mastering and spiritual side of bending

I blame a lot of this on the producers, the bendings in Aang's were connected to the spiritual and martial arts, each style of bending was different and unique, also differentiating the characters, here in Korra, the bendings became all the same thing, there is no difference in how eachother bend their elements, it ends up not being possible to differentiate between those who really master it and those who only know the basics.

Having the new Avatar be a 17-year-old was perfect, as Korra was seven years older in her first season than Aang was in his first season. So it's like the creators aged up the main character to match how much time had passed for any audience members who happened to be a similar age to Aang when they watched it on TV - ATLA in 2005 to LoK in 2012. I was around the age of the characters in ATLA when I watched each episode on TV, so having Korra be a similar-ish match to my own age too was a nice touch.

Another common insight is this: ATLA was about a person learning how to be the Avatar. Korra is about an Avatar learning how to be a person. TLOK takes place 70 years after ATLA. Korra is 17 in Book 1. Katara is 85. Good catch on the polar-bear-dog. So many people just can't quite put it together.

This show is 70-71 years after ATLA. Unfortunately being in the Avatar State in the iceberg for 100 years decreased Aang's lifespan which he began to notice later in life and passed at 66. Korra is 17. The Avatar wiki says Aang was 12 throughout the show, but I remember at one time it said he was 13 for book 3 so that's why I'm not sure exactly how much later this is. 15:45 a couple years ago Nickelodeon established Avatar Studios run by the original creators and they have been hard at work at several new projects including an animated movie of the Gaang as adults that's planned to come out Oct. 10, 2025 which is the year of the 20th anniversary of ATLA's premiere.

SO happy you are watching and enjoying this series! You have such a talent for understanding the characters and themes of these shows in a short amount of time. An important thing to understand about Tenzin's dogmatic approach is unlike Aang who's sole duty, to quote Avatar Yangchen, was to the world Tenzin feels that his sole duty is to the Air Nation. As the son of Avatar Aang and one of the only Airbenders left in the world, Tenzin has an enormous amount of pressure to both uphold the legacy of his father and to preserve and restore an entire culture and his strict adherence to the dogma of the monks is a result of that pressure. Tenzin certainly is on a journey as a teacher just as much as Korra is on a journey as a student. On a lighter note, I've seen Tenzin described as trying to embody Aang's peaceful nature when he very clearly has inherited Katara's temper.

Only a few years after the end of the show aang is seen carrying both Hakoda and his new girlfriend with only one hand and in their books kyoshi and yangchen are able to lift men much larger than them just like Korra

i think a lot of the reason ppl may not like korra as much is because of things that are really out of her control tbqh. she’s very obvious and blunt and when things aren’t working for her, it’s not her being difficult, it’s just her establishing what works for her and what doesn’t and how to instill boundaries and stand up for herself. korra has such a strong sense of self and she knows herself more than anybody so she learned very early on to advocate for herself and to tell people who she is and what she needs.

I’d argue that having conviction in yourself can be very easily blurred with being arrogant and unwilling to accept you’re flawed and need to grow or adapt. I think Korra (based on my very limited understanding) is a bit of both. She’s so intriguing and charismatic because she’s so determined and self-confident which is great! But she’s also very naive and arrogant and needs to learn to let some of her perspectives go in order to grow and mature. It’s all about balance which is a huge theme in this universe. I mean toddlers can behave the same way but just being around other people for a couple decades teaches them to be more open and accepting of others, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to listen to people like Korra 😆 you’d just have two people yelling at each other unwilling to compromise at all.

I actually really love the pro bending concept. If you really think for 100 years they were at war, fighting over territories across the world and then with the peace they made a game that echoes that. You fight over territory and the match can go either way at any time, you've gotta use strategy to push them back. Its really interesting to think about.

Aang and Katara have three children as confirmed by this episode. Bumi is named after Aang’s old friend Bumi. Kya is named after Katara’s mother, Kya. Tenzin, the one child we actually have seen is named after the real life Tenzin Gyatso, the 14’th and I believe current Dalai Lama, a notable spiritual leader. Monk Gyatso from Last Airbender is also named after him, so in a way Aang named his own son after Gyatso, his father figure.

@@ZeallustImmortal yeah, the Industrial Revolution (which the Fire Nation started) started in our world in 1760. It ended in 1840, with Korra's era being circa America in the 1920s. The Fire Nation had its industrial revolution for a while, and had time to refine its metal and machines, and with other benders and nations helping and without war, technology and progress were allowed to flourish, and from the end of the war to Korra's era is 71 years after the end of the 100-Year-War (171 AG, and 18 years after Aang died). Time definitely checks out.

People seem to forget they had steam powered engines in ATLA. Technology progressed much differently but very quickly in the ATLA universe than real life industrialization. It was very deliberate to have the Fire Nation possess the most advanced machines which they used primarily for military purposes. In LoK we see these technological innovations being used for the benefit of society, not just warfare. (Aside from a few things which are spoilers, so I won’t mention them).

​@@lilscenechick1995they had tanks, hot air balloons, giant drills, submarines, etc. Most of which were designed by the Mechanist/sometimes Sokka.(props to the Fire Nation though for reverse-engineering hot air balloons into freaking metal airships). Both are alive at the end of the series as well. Like, whatever the Fire Nation had, the end of the War had been an utter explosion of technology. And now they can share that with the world _peacefully_... Yeah, it makes perfect sense to me that if Sokka and the Mechanist can design and produce submarines in a matter of months, that 70 years is more than enough for cars. If anything, I'm surprised technology is not _more_ advanced

I love that even during a time of war, the simplicity of aangs world was peaceful… he was a peaceful boy in a fairly calm world, but Korra has to find “inner peace” within a noisy world… with engines, cities, and pollution… nothing about this more modern world is peaceful… it’s not a great environment for someone to find inner peace.

The industrial revolution started with the Fire Nation as seen in TLOA, but the people responsible for speedrunning it were Zuko and Toph. Afer Zuko became Fire Lord, he made the Fire Nation's technology common and revealed Lightning Bending, which was a Royal secret, to the world. Toph at the same time created "Toph's Metalbending Academy" and made a partnership with Eathen Fire Industries, a industrial company specialized in refining/building/technology that was active in basically the whole world 1 year after the animation, with her father being one of the bosses of the company. Toph and her academy students later started working with the company using their metalbending to accelerate the industrial process and the construction of building and other fabrics. She became an "Executive Partner" as she liked to be called. So basically Lightning Bending and Metalbending were the 2 catalysts of the big Industrial Revolution of this universe. The creation of Republic City was hinted in the comics to have started with the former city of Yu Dao, a Fire Nation colony that was first part of the Earth Kingdom, but was stolen from them during the 100 years war, among other colonies. After 100 years of the Fire Nation controlling the place, the city basically became a peaceful place where Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation citizens lived together as equals, having children, families etc. Republic City was created cause they had to remove the Fire Nation's army from there and return the place to the Earth Kingdom, but they lived there peacefully and the Earth Kingdom citizens also didn't want them to leave. Earth King Kuei(the one that was kept in the dark about the war by the Dai Li) and Fire Lord Zuko almost started another war to decide who would keep the colony for his own kingdom, but they realized that the world had changed and different nations living together was now possible so, with Aang's help, they created Republic City to be the center of harmony between all the different societies.

Honestly the technology speedrun was already going full BLJ mode with the Mechanist and his contributions. Man created tanks, subs(with Sokka's artistic help), hot air balloons(Sokka helped too), a giant mile long Drill... And then the Fire Nation took those balloons and decided they were child's play and invented freaking metal airships in like half a year from having the basics of a hot air balloon. Honestly if anything, it slowed down after that, or Korra would have been even _more_ technologically advanced. Cars aren't even all that impressive by comparison imop

This series is amazing, from the storytelling, to the major upgrades in animation, whether it be high definition or the lighting, which you could hardly tell wasn’t as used in the main series until you see so much more lighting used when they bend in this show.

Korra in base doesn't count because despite the word reincarnation being used, each Avatar clearly has their own distinct consciousness and soul that persists even after the next one comes about, even able to converse and learn new things

@@MWSin1 I was referring to the whole "every past Avatar acting through you" part of it. Not that Aang would physically manifest, but that in that moment Korra's eyes would also be his eyes. Then again, as I said, their spirits are still distinct and I'm sure Aang has seen them in some way or another the same way Roku became aware of both Sozin's Comet and Zuko being his great grandson, both things that he could only have learned _as_ a spirit. Meanwhile Katara will live to her third great grandchild. I mean, assuming you take Aunt Wu's fortunetelling as fact. I myself am a bit wary of anything dealing with fate as a plot point(because predestination is pretty existentially horrifying and the same episode has her say the future can change right?), but I digress. Either way, it really must be awkward seeing Korra for Tenzin.

Being of the crowd that grew up with ATLA, I was there on day one that Korra began airing and watched each episode and season with excitement. You've read the comments here and elsewhere and know how this show creates a bit of a division among the fans but I'm personally of the opinion, and I believe its become a majority opinion, that while ATLA is an incredibly high bar to ever live up to, Korra is nowhere near as bad as the haters want to claim and even has moments that are as good as peak ATLA. You're one of the most open-minded reactors I've come across in years and while I don't want to misconstrue my tastes with your own, I actually think you're really going to enjoy and even love this series.

On the subject of lightning bending. In Aang's time it was mostly a guarded sercret, kept by the fire nation royal family for them to learn. Over time, more people learned it, and variations were created so that it was easier for people to learn. For metal bending, there are comics that show Toph teaching others how to do it.

Honestly, such a hard task to follow the OG series EVEN IF they got everything they asked for and all the time in the world. I love that they tried different things, (letting Korra be so brash and flawed and not Aang) even if they dont all play out perfectly. They sure didn't rest on the popularity of the first series! You can tell they really tried to imagine where the world was going and how it expanded. I will FOREVER be grateful for the next generation of characters and dont mind talking about its flaws. Just glad it exists.

The bending in korra has definitely improved. Its absolutely visually stunning an there is a point you can see all the trauma has an effect on korras bending for a while. I dont want to give too much away, but there is a fight later, after she thinks she is better, but you can see her fighting is off. Its not as fierce an seems more defensive, then when shes starts to really get better shes right back to being a brilliant fighter

25:05 this is similar to what the airbending kids thought about aang when it was revealed he was the avatar but rlly the avatar is just another bender, they're not inherently better benders what makes the avater powerful is their ability to bend ALL the elements but if they're only bending one then they're just like any other bender (excluding going into the avatar state)

I have mixed feelings since the Avatar does pick up those abilities much faster. The avatar has a limit like everyone else and therefore a skilled water bender could surpass the avatar in time but I think the Avatar is much better initially like we see with Aang vs Katara in S1 and then Korra pick up Airbending movement mid tournament (I believe could be due to past lives giving her an edge, like it’s just in her soul)

@@thecocoacouch apologies for how long this is jesus i can see that, my view on it is different in that aang was definitely a prodigy in airbending and therefore waterbending bc they're so similar and he fits the personality of both pretty well imo.. but we know he did initially struggle with fire and earth a bit (less so with fire but i still think it was affected by his personality) and korra being a prodigy, i can't help but be a little eh about bc i'm pretty sure the main reason is that the creators were originally only given one season so they kinda had to speed things up like that BUT if i ignore that, my main thought is that it seems like the avatars are discovered pretty early on in life, even if they're not usually told until they're about 16, and so probably trained in their main element a little harder than most (korra is undeniably a natural though because of her ability to bend all the elements except air so young) ^sorry if that paragraph doesn't make sense im running on like 3 hours of sleep lmao something i also thought about was we rlly only see aang and korra, and then other avatars when they're already masters - but i think roku might've been not-as-good before being revealed as the avatar, if only because in his (friendly) fight with sozin, he loses and sozin says "looks like i win again".. and when he beats sozin in the future, he uses other elements instead of just fire - earth bending to evade his attack and then airbending, and he goes into the avatar state i rlly think its like iroh said to zuko "It is the combination of the four elements in one person that makes the Avatar so powerful" he also adds that understanding the other elements can make one more powerful and says he developed the technique to redirect lightning by studying waterbenders, and a common thing stated by commenters on reaction videos of the bloodbending episode is that katara uses an earthbending technique while fighting hama (stopping the water head on instead of redirecting it) which is why hama is so shocked, katara learned by travelling the world and seeing different benders anyway, that's just my view on things, it could also be that the avatars tend to be natural prodigies but i rlly think the fact they're able to bend all the elements is the main factor in why they're so powerful, and why if they're only bending one element, their opponent isn't necessarily at a disadvantage

Korra is an amazing series. Something to remember is that the authors were only given funding to write one season at a time so there isn't that one goals that expands seasons. Season 2 gets rough but Season 1 and 3 are peak!

Idc what people say i love this show so much and i cant believe i listened to people on the internet hate it for years and hated it myself until i finally watched it and WOW for all its faults it was still an amazing show. One thing about season 1 i hate though is people calling her a mary sue because she was a great bender. She may have been a great bender but she wasnt perfect by any means, brash, headstrong, hot tempered and quick to fight but not think. She was an avatar with alot of growth ahead of her and far from a mary sue

Aang was comfortable with defense and evading but needed to learn offense and attack. Kora is exactly the opposite, she needs to learn defense, evading, patience, and find her spirituality- something Aang found on his own and was a natural at. Funny how each Avatar is similar and yet so different

30:10 Bending techniques have also improved in the past 80 years. While there was only one method of lightning bending in Aangs childhood, heavily protected by the Fire Nation royals, in Korra's people developed simpler ways to achieve a similar effect. Toph was the first metalbender, but her skills have also been passed down and improved upon. Same with nonbender technology, really.
