"Where was Trinket during that fight?" In the game Trinket sometimes got left behind, as Laura was very protective of her bear and he wasn't well protected early on, so it kind of fits, but the real reason is that apparently animating animals is a lot harder than animating people, so they kept it to a minimum. Edit, also animating him in combat would be even harder work than like the scenes we saw of him just being adorable.

In the game a Ranger's pet has to share their turn actions, so Laura often chose her own actions as they were often more useful than trinket attacking, and she often forgot about utilizing trinket in combat because of this. usually only when she had nothing else to do she'd let him attack. Ranger Pets also do not scale well in levels and constantly are in danger of benig one shot killed.

'I would like to RAAAAGE' In D&D, Barbarians get a number of Rages per day (or rest or whatever, depending on the edition). While raging, they generally get bonus chance to hit, damage, ability to take damage, and sometimes a number of other things. But rage only lasts a fairly short amount of time. So while in a game, it's important for players with barbarian characters to declare that they are actually doing so; they can't try to retroactively go 'oh that was all while raging.' Gotta SAY that's what you are doing, and use up one of your rages. So... art imitating ... an imitation of life. As it were.
@andyme3541
@andyme3541 2 жыл бұрын
Also during the campaign that was what Travis would say basically to show Grog was raging 'I would like to rage' it became a running joke in the campaign and since then, I think in campaign 2 and 3 the same phrase has been used by other people playing Barbarians, so it was also a little nod of the head to that

It wasn’t Krieg’s son who he was talking to, just one of the soldiers under his command. It was a “son” from an elder in authority to a younger subordinate. Also, you must have a pretty solid following. Watched this video less than an hour after it posted, and there’s already a solid number of views and likes. I don’t know if you take notes or are just very observant, but for someone coming to this without prior knowledge you catch on quick!

Also, at least in the campaign, Brimscythe killed the original general Krieg, and was posing as him. So even if this soldier was Krieg's son (he wasn't), there wouldn't be any contradiction.

@jaywhite6
@jaywhite6 2 жыл бұрын
So just to address some of your questions. Brimscythe is not the dragon that killed Vex and Vax's mother. Vex said in episode one that 'A' Dragon killed their mother, and thus, she spent her formative years studying them and trying to track down the one that killed her. Keyleth is a druid, and thus uses nature magic. Pike is a cleric, She uses her connection to The Everlight (her deity) to use magic. she was so tired in episode 1 after she healed Grog, because she had already been using a lot of magic during the first fight with Brimscythe. In D&D you use 'spell slots' to cast spells. This is the shows way of saying she ran out of spell slots. Pike and Scanlan are both in fact Gnomes. :) Hope this helped with some questions.

Gilmore's has so many little easter eggs for various of the campaigns (like Tusk Love, a romane book that became a running gag in Campaign 2) as well as other, more esoteric DnD references. For example, the sandal is a reference to Gygax's sandal. The creator of DnD, Gary Gygax used to make shoes. One day he realized that he could make a living out of this DnD thing and the last shoe he ever made was a sandal. That sandal is now a treasured object in the community and gets passed around. The head of Titmouse, the animation studio, is the current owner of the Gygax sandal.

Scanlan first showed his ability to cast illusions of the group in the first episode, when he sang an introduction to the group in Sovereign Uriel's throne room in Emon. He made them all look heroic and stuff during the song, and even showed Trinket the wonderbear, even though Trinket had to wait outside with the guards, and they were all very hung over and disheveled from the bar fight. In addition to their standard abilities, all the characters have certain limited-use special abilities, according to their character classes and choices and paths their characters make. Some are magical and some are physical, depending on the class of the character and their experience level. The more experience a character gains, the more abilities are unlocked.

I didn't hear you say that you noticed, but General Krieg is voice by David Tennent. Its a bit hard to tell as he went full Scottish for the part... They said in some of the behind the scenes stuff that he actually recorded his lines in his attic, as it was right in the middle of the pandemic lockdown and he couldn't get to a professional studio for it. Travis also said that when they first started getting some of the animation back, its was a bit tame, as most of the animators were used to doing children's shows. They sent it back, asking for it to be a bit more graphic. The next version came back better, but again sent it back saying "Close, but really f**k our characters up." What came back the next time is the fantastic level of violence we get to see.

in DnD rules, Trinket is the animal companion of Vex, who is a ranger beastmaster... The trouble with that particular class and subclass is that the animal companion is rather underpowered (things have improved in later rewrites, but not at the time in which they played this campaign)... so Trinket was mostly a liability in fights and would be quick to die if they let him out... So they mostly keep him out of sticky situations. quick rundown to the characters and classes: Percy is a human gungslinger fighter... which makes him good with most weapons but in this setting he is the guy who invented firearms.. his weapons are early prototypes and prone to misfire or jam. Grog is a Goliath barbarian. he soaks up damage, can take a punch and deal them too.. in raging mode, he becomes a beast. Goliaths are renamed half-giants in this cartoon because of copyright issues. Scanlan is a Gnome bard of lore, which means he has a lot of magical abilities and is a great support character/jack of all trades.. his magic expresses itself in the form of music. Pike is a war cleric Gnome. her deity is the Everlight. She has healing powers, damage dealing magic and packs quite a punch, especially against the undead. Vexalia is a half-elven beastmaster ranger.. making her expert at tracking and archery. Trinket is her companion. She has chosen as favoured enemies the Dragons, which gives her a few advantages against them. Vaxildan, her twin brother, also a half-elf... he's a rogue assassin, making him quite lethal with the daggers, and expert at stealthing around, pickpocketing and lockpicking. Keyleth is a half-elven Moon Druid. this makes her an expert in magic that has to do with manipulating and controlling nature and the elemental forces. Druids are one of the most well-rounded and powerful classes in the game, and moon druids are especially good at wildshaping. Each character is voiced by the actor that played the character in the game, and the DM, the dungeon master who runs the game, voices a bunch of minor characters and Sylas Briarwood. if you google the voice cast, you will find that you probably have watched cartoons or played games with a bunch of characters that have been voiced by at least a few of them. In fact, in this show, the extended voice cast includes some very big names of television and big screen fame. Check them out...I am sure you will recognise at least a few names.

What’s really funny about Grog, is that his player, Travis, is one of the smartest people at the table and very often figures connections or plot points out long before the rest of the group. But Travis is such a team player and committed to his role of idiot barbarian that he either sits on it and waits for the smarter “characters” to figure it out or finds some goofy way for Grog to say something or do something stupid that points the team in the right direction. Every table needs a Travis at it. XD

Dragons are very powerful creatures. A single adult dragon, at least in 3rd edition D&D, is a formidable opponent for a team of fairly advanced adventurers. They have powerful natural attacks (biting, wing buffet, tail swipe), they are incredibly tough (armor-like scales, lots of hit points to soak up damage), plus, obviously, their breath weapon. The running joke about Trinket never being in the fights was because at the time the Ranger class in D&D that used pets was *incredibly* under powered and Trinket would basically get one shot by any of the baddies that they'd face at the levels they're currently at. So he was always "left at home" or (eventually) put in a magical necklace where he could just chill out in his own demiplane. Fun Fact: the person who voices the captain in the cold open is Felicia Day, who convinced Matt Mercer and company to move their monthly Pathfinder home game to a weekly D&D streamed game on her Twitch Stream, 'Geek and Sundry'. Tusk Love is a smutty romance novel introduced in the second campaign about a noblewoman's romance with a half-orc commoner, and was one of the reasons that Laura Bailey's character, Jester Lavore, started crushing on Travis Willingham's character, Fjord Stone, who was a half-orc. Laura and Travis are married in real life, which is the only reason he was comfortable with playing out the romance. The 'Lance of Dragonslaying' is a reference to the campaign setting 'Dragonlance', which is where the D&D animated movie adaptation of the books takes place. The troll dick was a thing in the home game, which they'd lost before the live stream started. As the cavern was coming down there was a giant bolder in the shape of an icosahedron (20-sided die, commonly called a d20) that was smashed by Scanlan's spell. This is a reference to the Luck feat that Vax'uldan has and to the Bardic Inspiration that Scanlan can use to give his party members, allowing them to succeed saving throws. "I would like to rage" is a catch phrase Travis would say when Grog would go into a rage.

These first 2 episodes were mostly made for the fans of Critical Role because they sum up a little the story before they started streaming the game. On another note, "I would like to rage" became Travis Willingham's (Grog) most iconic phrase from Campaign one (and Ashley Johnson uses it in Campaign 2 when she plays a barbarian). That and Sam Riegel's "Bixby's haaand" that was replaced in the show with "Scanlan's haaand" (because of the copyright from D&D, I believe). Oh, and Liam O'Brien's (Vax) "I walk away".

It's not just copyright -- all the people who'd never played D&D before would be asking, "Who's Bigby?"
@Zenshu1
@Zenshu1 2 жыл бұрын
@@magp1001 it was definitely a copyright issue moreso than worrying about people being confused about the name bigby, same reason that they never use the proper names of any gods or spells or anything, grog is a half-giant not a Goliath, Pikes god is just "The Everlight", "The whispered one" will never be called by his true name(unless the cr crew gets a license from WoTC to use the name in later seasons) they mentioned on one of their many Q&As at some point that it was just easier to not use anything that was owned by WoTC than to try to go through the hassle of getting a license to use the proper names when they could just change a few minor things that would still be recognizable without violating any copyrights...same reason why the groups safe word on the animated series is Chenga instead of Jenga.

Gnomes in D&D have evolved over time and editions. They started out as an option in the books as the typical pointy hatted gnomes. But that wasn't as conducive to adventure roleplaying, so they were played a bit differently, which resulted in changes over time to they way they were written in the lore and the way they were played. But that's also true of many of the races and classes in D&D. But that's a lot of why Scanlan and Pike don't seem like the type of gnomes you think of.

The dragons on the rug: Red, Blue, Green, Black and White are the chromatic dragons. In D&D they are typically evil. Blue has lightning breath, Red has fire, Green has acid, Black also has acid, but instead of a cloud of acid they spew a line of acid, and White breaths frost. Just putting this here for later: Tiamat? (I haven't watched ahead so this is a prediction, wonder if it'll amount to anything.) Great work as always, both of you. ❤️

Scalan and Pike are both gnomes. Vex, Vax, and Keileth are half-elves, and Grog is a goliath. Goliath are also called half giants, but that doesn't mean one parent is human and the other is giant, it's just a nick name.

As to then reminding her of elves, elves in DnD are very different to 'Santas Elves'. Think Lord of The Rings. And to be honest, DnD wise, I would describe Gnomes as pint-sized DnD elves, whereas Halflings are pint-sized Humans.

When you said you like dragons, there will be more next season, and at least in stream they meet at least one who isn't evil. That being said, others have pointed out that there are the Chromatic (generally evil dragons) like Brimscythe, but also Metallic (generally good dragons). There are also others but that gets complicated

"Deus ex Machina" is an old theater term translating to "Hand of God" - Machina = Hand. So Vox Machina also means "Hand of Voice" and Scanlan does his magic as song, so when he does the big glowy purple hand spells, they are literally "Hands from his voice"

Episodes 1-2 are kind of the prequel. Episode 3 is where this story arc really kicks off. Bu5 already there's a lot here you should remember from this episode, it'll come back later. You catching the red blue black green and white is exactly right. What you didn't mention is that wall with the 4 orbs that Keyleth found, one of which turned into a green reptilian eye, and then it said "intruuderrrsss...." and then it alll crumbled away. Scanlan and Pike are both gnomes, yes. Everybody loves Gilmore.

Brimscythe didn't kill Vex and Vax's mother, in the last episode she said A Dragon killed their mother. In Critical Role (the DND show this animated show is based on) they specify that it was a Red Dragon that killed her.

There are 2 kinds of dragons in D&D, divided into 10 different sub-races depending on their colour, the ones in the show are the Chromatic Dragons, (Blue, White, Black, Green & Red). they all tend to be Evil. The other kind is Metallic. ( Bronze, Copper, Silver, Brass & Gold). they tend to be Good.
@LordBaktor

Traditionally in D&D, Chromatic Dragons (Red, Blue, White, etc.) tend to be on the evil side and Metallic Dragons (Gold, Silver, Iron, etc.) tend to be good. This is not a spoiler, it is common knowledge in the world of D&D so use it to inform your reactions whenever a dragon appears in the show.

The "Tusk Love" book is an in-joke about Critical Role's second campaign. At one point, Liam O'Brien (who plays Vax here, but played Caleb in campaign 2) derailed a huge portion of the game by deciding to just explore a city that Matt, the DM, hadn't prepared. So Matt had to improvise everything on the spot, and then Liam asked if there was a bookshop, and what the titles of every book were 😂 At one point they start asking about the smutty books, so Matt ad-libbed "Tusk Love" which is basically a smutty fantasy version of Romeo & Juliet. Laura Bailey (Vex here, Jester in that campaign) bought the book and they referenced it constantly the rest of the campaign.

That was pretty good perception to predict/foreshadow the other dragons based on the design on the floor in Krieg's "dragon room", but I think it was actually Tiamat's design. I haven't played D&D since the 80s (the original AD&D) and dragons were pretty rare. Encountering one is pretty much all you could expect. Tiamat was a multiheaded chromatic dragon (black, green, red, blue, white) Queen of evil chromatic dragons. I didn't make anything more of it since everything in the room had something to do with dragons.

The rug with five dragon heads of various colors is probably a reference to the D&D dragon goddess Tiamat, who is a ... divine evil dragon with 5 heads, one of each of various chromatic dragons. If you look up 'D&D tiamat' you'll get a bunch of art of her. It's one of the hints that Krieg is a dragon or at least has a great affinity for them. (That and the half dragon sexy painting)

Trinket isn't in the animation as much as in the game, because illustrating a 4 legged character is apperently much harder to do. And they were being very budget conscious. Illusion is something Scanlan excels at.

When it comes to what they do it was based on dice rolls and D&D rules. Pike is a Gnome Cleric depending on her level she can do certain spells at different levels only so many times. Like when Vax picks a lock with a toothpick he's a rogue with high lockpicking so he probably rolled high. Doesn't matter its weak wood lol D&D is organized chaos that goes as far as players & DMs imagination lol Not to mention homebrew rules etc.

You can always see when a check suceeded or failed. (Don't know how much you know about DnD in general, but you roll dice to determine if you can do something or not.) For instance, the moment where Grog and Scanlan rolled behind the Barrel to hide form Fince. Definitly a successfull stealth check, and a good one at that. On the other hand, when Scanlan tried to magic he door open, he probably failed his check, while Vax succeded his. And the rage thing XDDD It's something his class can do, and because the players usually tell the gamemaster what they want to do, Grogs player always said he would like to rage when there was a good moment for it. It became his catchprase and I love that they kept it in the show this is a loose recreaction of Adventures they had while actually playing DnD, so moments like that make me laugh hard

I've been binging Critical Role's first campaign (up to episode 51 now... which might actually be campaign two, but the videos still call it one). Was wondering why the show didn't have Tiberius in The Legend of Vox Machina (what introduced me to the KZbin CR series) but as the campaign has gone on I was glad they picked up where they did (Tiberius exited in what would have been early episode three of the show and ep one and two was a original story introduction that covered an earlier pre-stream quest). The player, of Tiberius, ended up leaving their game after developing what many describe as Main Character Syndrome.
