10:10 Allura didn't set Thordak free, She sealed him away and she just blames herself for his escape because she's a hero and she "Should have done a better job" blah blah blah, the usual hero guilt complex. She's amazing and powerful and I shall tolerate no Allura slander, not even from Allura!
@FulcanMal2 жыл бұрын
I never found that whole guilt complex thing to be particularly heroic. It just tells me you lack the intelligence to properly assign blame. If a bad person does a thing, you aren't a bad person for failing to stop them when you tried. They did the thing...like it isn't a hard concept to grasp.

@@FulcanMal having a self guilt issue has absolutely jack shit to with intelligence level. It's an emotional, psychological thing, and fits perfectly into Alura's slightly perfectionist attitude.

@@brewdaly1873 Which would be fine, if it was a quality possessed by the occasional perfectionist character, and one that's addressed as an actual character flaw. But its practically the default assumption of "heroism", associated with any kind of hero character. The Arrowverse being the worst offender, to the point where the protagonists spend more time brooding over what terrible people they are than they do fighting the actual terrible people. This is not a trait to aspire to, is all I'm saying. Rarely is it ever pointed out to the characters who have this quality that this is a bad trait, nor is the psychology of it (psychology not being divorced from intelligence by the way, as it requires intelligence to objectively view your own psychological faults) ever actually approached as a psychological problem.
@mayaenglish54242 жыл бұрын
@@FulcanMal campaign 1 spoilers about Allura Well in the campaign there's more time to have complicated nuanced emotional takes. In the animation they have to kind of boil it down to the essential tropes because they just don't have time to be subtle very often. Guilt is just Allura's knee jerk reaction due in part because Thordak's edict was directly aimed at her and was purposefully TRYING to make her feel guilty. So the implication was that Emon was chosen directly because Allura lived there. The backstory has a bit more connective tissue to work with in the campaign. Some of her friends/party members died fighting Thordak, so you can add that to the emotional soup of badness. And she also probably feels bad about not having been strong enough to just kill Thordak back then and having to resort to sealing him away. (None of which is her fault, but emotions don't work like that).

The good ones have a more involved discussion at the end which, to be honest, is the main thing that actually interest me, that perspective of a different person watching the show. Glad you’re coming around on Vex! Some additional context on Vex and Keyleth for you that’s been revealed in after show talks and conventions: Keyleth, Vex, and Vax are all half-elves, but the way they were raised in their respective childhoods were night and day. Vex and Vax were born from a Elven nobleman’s fling on his travels and were raised by their human mother until they were 10. When their father found out of their existence, he took them from their mother and brought them to Syngorn to provide an elven education. But while they were in Syngorn, the twins were constantly looked down upon because they weren’t “true elves” and were a stain on Syldor’s reputation, and target of his scorn. To make things worse, when they finally left his home and returned to Byroden, they found out that their mother was killed by a dragon attack, starting Vex’s journey of picking dragons as their favored enemies. Keyleth, on the other hand, grew up among the Ashari, born from parents who were both half-elves. The Ashari people aren’t a homogenous race, but a community of different groups of people, united under the ideology and purpose of loving nature and protecting the world from Elemental forces. She was doted on by loving parents, and shielded from a cruel world in a harmonious community. When Keyleth left that and met the party in Stillben, she was an incredibly naive princess (even more so than she is now), and for someone who had to fight against the world their entire lives, she was a sore sight for the twins. In fact, even Vax was exasperated by Keyleth in the early days of the party. She was essentially everything that the twins could have had, but was denied by a heartless father, and a cruel city. But now that they’re forming bonds and becoming a family, Vex is once again learning to open her heart, and she’ll come to love Keyleth like a younger sister that she has to take under her wings. Still naive in her eyes, but Vex comes to cherish that naïveté as optimism and hope she sorely lacked in her life.
@mayaenglish54242 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and Keyleth was more annoying and more of a disaster with her powers in the campaign so Vex's exasperation comes off as less harsh than in the animation. They made Keyleth more adorkable and cute, but kept Vex the same level of annoyed about it, which seems more unfair. (Similar to what's going on with Scanlan actually, he was more of a horndog and had a much sharper tongue in the campaign, so everyone's sharpness and exasperation in return was more equal).
@yiklongtay60292 жыл бұрын
39:23 I actually liked that they frequently get separated. Most conversations can only comfortably fit 3 or 4 members with everyone managing to give significant contributions to the convo. If they want to do character-developing dialogue, we wont get it from a party of 7 with 2 sentence each. Critters are aware of how intense the Fey Realm arc and the back end of the Craven Edge arc is. So these smaller groups are very much appreciated.

Craven edge, mechanically in the game, basically lowers the strength score of an enemy you hit, and adds some of that to your own strength score. After your strength score gets high enough, then you do more damage. The drawback is that Craven Edge can force you keep using it, even when you don't want to. If you have good mental resistances, you can resist Craven Edge... but this is Grog we're talking about. It's portrayed very well in the show. And in regards to Kamaljiori's death. They never addressed it in the campaign-Him and Osysa were separated because the Knowing Mistress (God of knowledge) is weakened from an injury she took during the Calamity, so to safeguard what knowledge remains, she had it all scattered and hidden away, until she recovers. This is why Kamaljiori and Osysa were separated. What makes it even sadder, the injury on the Knowing Mistress can never be healed, so the two sphynxes would never have reunited and would have spent the rest of eternity apart, knowing they can never be together.

You asked about how Craven Edge works. Its stats are up on the Critrolestats blog, but since KZbin won't let me put up links, I'll boil them down for you Craven Edge is a Legendary greatsword that can only be attuned to by creatures of non-good alignment (Grog is Chaotic Neutral, so he squeaks by). It grants +2 to attack and damage rolls made with it, simply as a baseline and has the following unique traits. *Sentience: Craven Edge is a thinking being with a Chaotic Evil alignment, an Intelligence of 16 (SIGNIFICANTLY higher than Grog's), a wisdom of 12, and a Charisma of 18. It has hearing and Darkvision out to a range of 60 feet, can understand Abyssal (the language of demons), Common, and any language spoken by a person attuned to it, and can communicate telepathically with anyone wielding it (whether they're attuned or not, in the campaign it had a brief exchange with Percy before being handed off to Grog). *Personality: Craven Edge is cold, cruel, and bloodthirsty, and seeks to drive its wielder into battle where it can experience new heights of violence every chance it gets. It wishes to be wielded by the merciless yet pliable, who will feed it on demand. * Dark Aura: when wielded unsheathed, Craven Edge grants an attuned wielder a palpable air of menace that gives them Advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks (they roll twice on the check, and use the higher of the two results). *Devour the Weak: Once attuned, whenever Craven Edge deals damage to a living creature, that creature must make a Constitution save (dc 12). If they succeed, nothing happens and the attack damages normally. If they fail, they lose a point of strength, which is transferred temporarily to Craven Edge's wielder, increasing the wielder's strength by 1 up to a maximum of 25 until they take a Short Rest. Creatures brought to 0 strength by this die outright, lacking the life force to keep their body running. (In the campaign, Grog was voluntarily avoiding rests to keep his strength from resetting, up to the point of taking points of Exhaustion from failing to sleep and relying entirely on magical healing for hitpoint recovery. This would arguably be an optimal strategy if it weren't for the NEXT trait on Craven Edge's sheet.) *Gluttonous Evolution: If Craven Edge devours enough strength to bring its attuned wielder's strength to 25, it changes its shape, becoming larger, jagged, and serrated, and it begins emitting a shadowy aura until its wielder resets their strength to baseline by taking a Short Rest. While in this enhanced form, Craven Edge deals an additional 2d6 Necrotic damage with each successful attack. When the attuned wielder finally takes a Short Rest after Craven Edge has reached this state, they must make a Constitution save (dc 16). If they fail, their soul is devoured by the now-empty weapon, killing them instantly. (I believe Silas was able to make use of this effect fairly casually by simply saving one of his Legendary Resistances for the end of each combat, which allowed him to simply CHOOSE TO SUCCEED on that Constitution save even if he failed the roll.)

I'm so glad that you mentioned the fake-out deaths. Cassandra and Keyleth in season 1, Vex and Pike in season 2. You could even count all the falling rocks to the list which look like they crushed people, although those fake-outs weren't at the ends of episodes (s1e1 when vox machina is buried by a cliff face which Keyleth blocked with roots, or Kima and Allura in s2e1). While the moments are shocking and emotional, they do get weird and frustrating in that frequency. About Scanlan singing: Sam Riegel does often sing in the campaign. He doesn't sing these originals however and instead covers segments of pop songs with adjusted lyrics to fit the situation. The rest of the cast joins in quite often :)
@troikas33532 жыл бұрын
A lot of those moments really happened and are big points from the campaign so I get why they are keeping them in. But I think they may need to start taking more liberties with the story to avoid that repetition. In this one they probably should have made it visually clear Pikes alive but badly hurt. They've established their relationship well enough that just watching Grog injure her is strong enough on its own to be the gut punch you want without needing to add another possible fakeout. People familiar with the game and the source material know there is absolutely no plot armor protecting any character, but people only watching the show may start feeling like there is.

This episode wrecked me more than ep 3-and I knew that one was coming. Sam does do singing in the stream (but couldn’t do the songs from the stream because they were Weird-Al-esque parodies of popular songs). Mighty Nein is not Allura’s story. I’m just going to say there is a character in thr Mighty Nein that you are going to adore! The Osysa part of the song that Sam sang was sung by Ashley (Pike).

you're in for a ride with Sacanlan's story in the next batch, believe me. FYI he sung as Scanlan while playing, as one of his character's features as a bard was "inspiration" that allowed a boon to other players, he would come with some improvised lyrics for a top 40 song that alluded to the moment during play; it was the best.

Short answer is that we don't know if we're going to get more of Alura's backstory. The party's relationship with her was developed in the pre-stream portion of the game, so we never actually got to see much of that development. They've already changed their history somewhat, as in the original stream Alura was the one who set the group on the hunt for the Vestiges, but we'll have to wait to see if there are any more. She's basically the McGonagall of this world (the Maggie Smith version).

If you go back and rewatch the beginning of Season 1 Episode 2 Uriel asks Allura how to deal with dragons as she's dealt with them before. Allura says that "that was a red dragon, but that was years ago." Really clever of them to sneak that in as foreshadowing to Allura's backstory. As for Sam singing in in the Campaign? Oh yeah. Many times. He mostly ripped on tunes from the top 40s from when the campaign was airing. But he did come up with his own lyrics to the melodies all the time, to the applause of the rest of the cast. This episode in particular was a pretty stark departure from what happened in the Campaign! And I am here for it. I love their retelling of this story.

GAME VS SHOW DIFFERENCES SEASON TWO 1. They went to Vasselheim to get Kima 2. Kima is with them in the Raven Tomb 3. They fight the beholder first (Zahra gets the kill not Vax) 4. Beholder droped Kima down a hole and Vax went to get her(why he wasnt looking for booby traps) 5.Purvan had the Amulet of Raven Slumber in his tomb that held his animal a pet wolf named Gauldrick(not given by Zahra) 6. Keyleths aramente and the closing of the fire plane at Pyrah are two separate events 7. Vox has been to Vasselheim befor during there Slayers Take arc. People there were helpful both times. 8. Vex loves flying. She had a flying carpet (lost in the slayers take arc) a potion of flying (taken from Ripley) and a flying Broom (stolen from a IRL guest, Chris Hardwick) 9. The Deathwalkers Ward Armor may have originally been for Vex but Matt said it could work for either Vax or Vex 10. More Vestiges were reveald earlier, and they were closer to home. 11. Kamaljiori test was to figure out his name, not to wound him.(Also Scanlan didn't sing that amazing song in game) 12. There is no Dragon on Sphynx fight 13. Kamaljiori is in Tal'dorei near the city of Westruun the city Pike and Grog are from. And other stuff I left out because spoilers

These three episodes are probably the most different from the campaign out of the entire show so far--but in my oppinion some of the best. Especially 2x6! Good to see they can make great adaptation and not just great copies from the stream--we knew that already from the rest of the show but I think 2x5 & 2x6 have been the biggest changes & streamlining & my personal favourites. This is promising for when they adapt the Might Nein as there is a lot I think they will need to trim down

Minor correction - they did go to Vasselheim to seek aid from the temples, and High Bearer Vord offered to send one of their best champions with them as aid, only for the guy to get unceremoniously knocked aside by Kima who declared she would be the one to go instead.

Although it's different, its actually better. Suits TV much better with how they did it here, more streamlined and easier to follow. Also adds a bit more conflict in the show by having Zahra acting as an enemy and gives their friendship more of an arc of redeeming.

In fact Allura did mention that she has fought a dragon before. In the 2nd ep of season 1 I think there’s a scene where the council asks Allura what she knows about blue dragons when her history and she says ”that was a red dragon years ago”. I also love that they’ve also mentioned the city of Syngorn several times already but only in passing. Even the fact that Syngorn had disappeared after the dragon attack was mentioned in ep 5 of season 2.
@1ucky026 ай бұрын
Vex's ability to sense the dragon's is actually based on an in-game mechanic that her class, rangers, have. Basically they pick a favored enemy and it makes it easier to track and hunt them as well as for them to recall info on the enemy when a roll is needed. As it has been told before, part of Vex and Vax's backstory is that a dragon killed their mother so Laura chose dragons as her favored enemy for Vex.

Most of the information from the flashbacks have some bits and pieces from the campaign. Like we knew her mom went missing but it was only touched on a few times never role played, so getting those are a nice treat and build the characters along with their flaws even more. I watched every episode of campaign one and two. From day one of campaign one I was a fan. At one point people would send them food while they streamed their game. Pizza orders, donuts candy etc. It feels like I was there and felt every dice fail/success, every death.

Pike did get stabbed by Craven Edge in the campaign, but the details were a bit different. There had been dimensional portals the players had to jump in and out of for Kamaljiori's trial, and when Grog went into one, he got back out by throwing Craven Edge through first while connected to him by a chain. When Grog climbed out of the portal, he found Craven Edge had accidentally stabbed into Pike.

2:07 Fun fact. Matt never intended Vex/Laura to have a flying broom, at all. The actor/comedian Chris Hardwick was a guest star on the show in one episode. His character were a Dragon born named Gern Blanston & he had given himself a flying broom. When Vex/Laura saw that...There was no mercy. She got hand of the broom & then pretended to drop it in a pool of lava, so that it was disolved. When in actual fact she put it in her magic Back of Holding. Both she & Chris had to role to see how that whent. Chris an insight check(To test if some one is lying to you) she a Deception chek(To see if you can fool some one else). Laura won by a small amount & thus she got the flying broom in the game & Chris could go home on his feet... After that though. Vex/Laura did not know the command word to make the broom fly. So it is in fact true that she had to go ask Sam/Scanlan if he could find it among the runes on the broom. He could find said rune & point it out to Vex. Yet he could not read it. Since it was in Draconic. However Vex whom hates Dragons beyond all else. She knew the launguage. So in the game Sam hands over a magical stolen broom to Laura & says there is the Word. I don´t know what the hell it means...In a split second Laura has to invent the command word by her self. What she came up with was awful: Hrrutt hraa. It sounds like some one clearing their throut. Immidiately after stating that she said: Damn!! I whish I had thought of something cooler to say. She got that now I guess

Re: Pike getting impaled by Craven Edge: It did happen in that episode but in a different manner. In the 2nd sphinx scene in the campaign, Ashley wasn't there (shooting for "Blindspot") but her character was & was piloted/controlled by Matt. The test the sphinx had VM do was quite different & involved portals. Grog jumped into a portal to see letters at the entrance but he didn't tether himself to a rope so he was floating in what I think was the Astral Sea. In the campaign Grog has something called the "Chain of Returning" which basically allows him to yank his great ax back to him after throwing it at an enemy. In this episode it was attached to Craven Edge. He threw it through the portal in the hopes it would stick into a wall & he'd be able to pull himself back into the chamber. When he got back to the chamber, Grog saw that instead of it being inbedded into a wall, it was stuck into Pike. Pike was still awake & was grin & bearing it because she knew she was helping Grog get back into the chamber. But the lines were said by Matt, not Ashley.

Yes, Sam does quite a lot of singing when they are playing. Especially as Scanlan when, as a Bard, he has tons of opportunities to do so. Sam is a talented songwriter on his own, but his brother-in-law(?) is also a music producer so if he gets a musical idea he can really just go for it and make it happen.
