The Vex scene on the tabletop is absolutely legendary, in the campaign Laura says "I open the door COMPLETELY NAKED" and everyone had a mixture of horror and laughter on their face. Except Marisha, who was busy doing a little dance and yelling "ITS A POWER PLAY! YES!!!" Keyleth is a special case in terms of life expectancy: if she completes her Aramente and becomes an Archdruid she practically stops aging and her lifespan increases for literal millenia. She is going to watch everyone she knows die of old age.

I always loved how Keyleth's awareness of the shear weight of time in front of her was such a major factor in her character. She's a sheltered 20-something staring down a possible two thousand years of responsibility and plagued by the knowledge she will in many ways be alone through most of it even if everything goes well.

It took a while, but we finally got the really crucial piece of Keyleth's character: that she will outlive them all if she finishes her Aramenté. And at this point, she has the confidence to believe she actually will. We get bits of that in the opening theme with the other characters vanishing around her, we got a bit of that with Vax's vision in 3x1, but now we've actually heard why.

i think a lot of people misunderstood the last scene between Vex and Percy. She specifically said 'this CAN"T be anything more than a fling'. She cant (and is not ready to) take it any further than fling, tryst, distraction. Percy ends up giving up his own boundaries to settle there even though he wants what they have to be more than a fling.

@@digifreak90 I don't disagree. I think my wording didn't really express the perspective. I think the point I am making is he is settling instead of sticking up for his worth. He is allowing himself to be her fling instead of her 'all or nothing'. She is not wrong for having her walls up. But it also isn't fair to only see him as a play thing when she is in the mood. I know how this story plays out ultimately but in the moment I wouldn't blame him if he shut down any intimacy/flirting with her going forward.

The main group records all together and Liam (Vax) apparently recorded Laura (Vex) and Taliesin (Percy) voicing That Scene on his phone... Taliesin, as the eldritch immortal being that he is (fandom injoke) was completely unphased, while Laura, despite not being the shyest person around, was a bit embarrassed. We will likely never see that recording, as it's only fair that they keep it within the friend-group, but it's fun to imagine them giggling and going red in the face. Also Travis (Grog), who's married to Laura, is Thee biggest Perc'ahlia shipper.

For the most part yes. I believe there's a specific enchantment places on most magic items that preserves and protects them from damage. That's why you can find magic items in pristine condition that were burried in dungeons for centuries. However this is not always the case. Take the Staff of Power or Staff of the Magi. You can just snap them in half and they explode lol.

Interspersing THAT scene with the other scene is devilishly evil haha! Obligatory EXU Calamity shoutout part three now - I think I speak for at least five people when I say we would love to see a reaction to it. If it's not your thing, that's totally cool and you should watch stuff you are genuinely interested in, but I think it's that good that it would hook anyone into the story. Collaborative storytelling as a form of media is so incredibly unique and cool, the talent on display is wondrous and seeing the magic happen as it's happening is a joy. The story beats that happen are created by the people at that table, and it feels so raw and earned. Anyway, can't wait for the next three episodes and the reactions, love the channel and the Who reactions too!

Namely Vex's blue feathers in her hair, Keyleth's antlers (she only ever mentioned having a circlet, Kit ran with it and made antlers stick out of it) and I believe the design of Percy's glasses which had fold out lenses for focusing on tiny details since he is a tinkerer.

I’ve had this discussion in other comment sections but yeah, the twins are cowards. Traumatized, so very much understandable, but still. Vax is coping with his (again, very understandable, especially because of the visions as well) fear by telling himself he’s saving Keyleth, but Keyleth accepts the future pain knowingly, so he’s really just kinda abandoning her. And vex is also a bit cruel, letting Percy in this much, it refusing to fully commit, even though the show makes it so obvious they are just absolutely besotted with each other. She’s trying to create a distance that just is not there any more.

I'd say they both have philophobia. The specific fear of falling in love and having a meaningful relationship with someone. Due to their pasts and their present.

I’m using the term coward because it’s a more general term, I’m not well versed in psychology or psychological analysis, and I’m not sure both of them necessarily have the same underlying thought pattern. It was the best coverall term I spontaneously came up with, even if it sounds harsch. Also, considering the amount of misery Keyleth is in, I’ll give vax a little bit of shit and stick to the term. Especially since he started it, in season 1 („you know I’m in love with you, right?“). He opened this can of worms, he was the first to push for a deeper relationship, and now he’s pulling back. All of these steps are being taken without talking to Keyleth first, he always comes to her with a decision already made. Again, all because of understandable reasons, but specifically from the perspective of Keyleth, he’s being a massive douche.

@Seraphimisdead I feel like people aren't giving Vax enough slack. Not condoning what he's done or what he's doing, but nobody else is going through what he specifically is going through. He has a relationship with death that nobody else does. His vestige is the only one that comes with responsibility. He gets fed direct visions of death and all its aspects from the Matron herself. He can't take the armor off. He belongs to her now. He tried to initiate the relationship with Keyleth before he had the armor. He is by and large a different person than he was before. His fate is more or less set in stone, but he still doesn't fully understand what he's going to become. He tried to get close again and was shown an actual vision of her future suffering. This fear that Keyleth has about the future that she hasn't seen. He saw it. Probably felt it. Was shown it as an inevitability. From his POV, the Matron was warning him against getting too close. That he can't be close to anyone. Realistically, they're all mentally unstable people who have emotional issues they need to solve before trying to fall in love. Not to mention, they're trying to save the world. As much we as outsiders are like "just love eachother its worth it" we aren't in their situation. We don't have to worry about watching the one we love get eaten by a dragon or demon in front of our eyes. That can be life ending trauma. Not easy to willingly accept that risk. Especially if it's shown to you, like Vax.

"Coward" has a lot of derogatory baggage associated with it. We're acknowledging trauma so I'm assuming it's not intended as a slight. So I kind of agree with the gist of the observation of avoidance. But I think it goes a little deeper - a little more ingrained in to their personalities. The twins have survived through avoidance. They have grown up relying on just each other. And they survived dealing with less-than-reputable individuals and situations. We get glimpses of their history as we hear about or meet people / organizations that they've encountered before. And we see early on that they supposedly only care about each other and have an instinctual reaction to run, leaving the group behind. They go up against powerful odds, striking hard with effect, and then melt in to the shadows to disappear when the situation turns on them. Vex often gets heat for being critical of Vax and Keyleth's budding romance. But we see now that this is a rule she applies to herself as well. Relationships add complexity and doom to anyone beyond the two twins. Or at least... that's been her instinct. Things are changing. The twins have relied on others. Began trusting others. They did not flee when they could have. They've put themselves in danger to serve the larger group. They've even been slipping in to expanded relationships. Avoidance is becoming less of an over-arching strategy and more of a situational tactic. The instinct is still there; still strong. But it is slowly changing.

I didn't catch it the first time but Pike goes in for the kiss too at first before we cut to the "Courage" wine bottle. Especially after she admits to chickening out about admitting her feelings to someone, I think it shows while Scanlan is letting his fear interfere with connecting to Kaylie, Pike is the one who is struggling about her and Scanlan's relationship (he's been pretty up front - if a bit jokingly so because he doesn't know where she stands). And then the Vax-Keyleth and Vex-Percy issues are pretty apparent but are following the fear theme.

While I agree that Vax is in the wrong here I'll play devil's advocate for him a bit. No spoilers down below. I dont think Vax consider himself to be "alive". Let me explain. He doesnt exactly pictures himself as having any kind of future. He only thinks in terms of what happens after he's not there anymore. His visions and deal with Matron of Ravens that essentialy is "take me instead" as in take my life instead of my sister's are promoting that train of thought. To tie a bit of changes from campaign that might explain it better. Vax in original campaign was very depressed at this time. Ever since the begining of Briarwood Arc to be precise. He didnt feel like he has any purpose in life and was looking for something to fill this void. He wanted to tie himself to a Pike's God to find it there but Vex's death in Matron's Temple steered it away. One of the reasons (not only) that he offered his life for hers is because he doesn't value his life. You can actually see it reflect in how he fights. His skill set supports hit and run tactics from safety, similiar to his sister. Instead he constantly rushes head first into danger. Constantly on the verge of death. After the deal with Matron he was not exactly happy about it because it tied him to a God he didnt want to be tied to. But he eventually accepted it. he found his purpose. To eventually serve her for eternity and usher in dead on the way into afterlife. He latched onto that but unfortunately its pretty overwhelming and his perspective on priorities is deeply tied to that purpose from that moment. He doesnt think: "As long as I'm alive before my service" but rather "What happens after I'm gone". Its wrong but I can see that to be the case. I think Vax just needs time for all this chaos from visons and Matron calms down a bit. To digest it and look at it objectively.

Oh there's no hypocrisy in liking Vex's portrayal and complaining about young girls being sexualized in anime. It's not the same at all! Canonically, Vex is 28-29 and, though she has a longer life-span, half-elves mature at about the same rate and are considered of age at 18 just like humans. Vex is not a young girl being sexualized, she's a confident fully grown woman who isn't afraid to go after what she wants...there's all the reason in the world to stan that!

To be fair, in the campaign, Keyleth and Vax were switched in that it was Keyleth that pulled away. She knew that in the best case scenario, she would watch all of her friends grow old and die, and she would have to go on living, aging only slightly. Marisha knew that a 20th level druid basically lived until they chose to merge with nature, and made it part of Keyleth's future if she were to be the leader of her people. It was actually a huge part of her character arc to come to terms with that idea, and colored a lot of her choices. Honestly, it was one of the things that made her character fascinating so I was disappointed they took that away from her.

@@internaut4257 So in the early days (the 2 years of private home games plus the first two dozen episodes of Critical Role) there was an 8th player in the group. Orion Acaba played the red dragonborn sorcerer Tiberius Stormwind and from the beginning was a member of the group both in and out of the game. Tiberius was from Draconia (and would constantly remind you of it, often introducing himself "Hello, I am Tiberius Stormwind of Draconia" to anyone they ever spoke to. As the show went on however, Orion was struggling both in and out of the game. He was suffering from a drug addiction and in game had a prominent "main character syndrome" where he had to be involved in everything, even if he had no reason to be involved. Vex has a pet bear that everyone loves? Tibs has to get a pet dragonling and go out of his way to reference it but it does nothing while Trinket actually helps. Percy is the tinkerer and comes up with and dismisses the idea of building an Archimedes Death Ray out of mirrors to fight the vampires of Whitestone, dismissing it as being impossible to get enough to make it work and impractical to build. Tibs interrupts a session to forcibly go on a shopping spree to buy up every mirror in the city to do it himself. Vex makes a super difficult arrow shot and rolls high enough to pull it off? He interrupts Laura's description of what she did to say that Tibs used his magic to nudge the arrow into the narrow gap, thus claiming the victory even though he didn't do anything. Furthermore he would cheat all the time by casually rolling dice when not on his turn until he got a roll he wanted and then would keep it until his turn came up and "oh look I rolled a 19 to hit!" It got to the point where the other players (usually Sam who sat next to him) would actively watch him roll to make sure he didn't cheat. He tried romancing Allura and she was showing interest but after he horrifically killed an old lady with a buzzsaw in battle, it trned Allura off and she rekindled her friendship with Kima which resulted in Allura and Kima hooking up. Orion, not Tiberius, took this personally as if Matt were punishing *him* by making Allura be gay all of a sudden. He did a fundraiser for the fans but kept the money for his drug habit and other expenses, never spending a dime on the project he promised. The final straw was when he made a super inappropriate comment to Laura after Vex did something awesome where he interrupts the scene to announce "Tibs is at half chub... but it's hidden so you can't see it." to which everyone pointed out "but you're telling us it?" The comment was directed towards Laura, not towards Vex in character, and her husband Travis was sitting *right there* and was pissed. It's easily the most uncomfortable episode of Critical Role in the decade of it being on the air. He was asked not to attend the next few sessions and finally removed from the group after that. Because Draconia in Critical Role was so heavily focused on just being Tiberius' background origin, it being included anywhere tended to just be in reference to Tiberius. It is actually destroyed in the Chroma Conclave attack right after Emon, with Vorugal destroying it off screen and killing Tiberius off in the process, with Vox Machina holding a memorial for their fallen ally when they find his frozen corpse as a way of the cast saying goodbye to their friendship with Orion and putting it all behind them. Since then if Draconia is ever mentioned at all, it's in ruins and Tiberius is never brought up again. Draconia appearing in this episode is genuinely the first time it's been mentioned with any focus at all since they found it destroyed in Campaign 1 years ago. The female sorcerer in this episode shares a lot of Tiberius' traits (being abrasive, getting butthurt about Kima and Allura hooking up, being a red dragonborn sorcerer, etc) when in the game she was dead before the game even began. They basically went as close to using Tiberius (who Orion has copyright claimed and started his own offshoot show with) without actually using him. There are a lot more issues with him and he's basically been wiped from the franchise as much as possible, you can look up breakdowns of everything that happened. But basically he was a detriment to the group, both in game and out, before being booted two dozen episodes in.

There's an interesting parallel going on between the romantic endeavors of the twins. Vax doesn't want to get into a relationship with Keyleth because he know that she'll outlive him and doesn't want her to feel that loss. Meanwhile, since Vex is a hafl-elf, she will easily live at least twice as long as Percy. Pike is in a bit of weird spot. The Hells are actually the domain of another god. Trying to invoke the power of one god in another's domain can be tricky. Luckily, her god and the Lord of the Hells don't really clash as much as one might think. Their opposition to one another is more philosophical in nature. The Dawnfather, on the other hand, would be a very different matter.

Yep, vax is being selfish. It was the same driver behind his bargain with the raven queen. He'd subject others to grief of losing him but needs to learn to "accept fate, don't fear death, for death gives meaning to life". The visions the matton of ravens us giving him are her trying vyo guide him regarding what is going to be expected of him as her champion, while also gently trying to guide him where she sees he is in need. She's not heartless. She's the only mortal who managed to ascend to eternal godhood vs the gods who began as eternal beings who shaped and guided the organization of materials into the planes of this universe. So she had a perspective on mortality that is unique from the other deities. They are all siblings, she's sort of the stepsister. Lol. I like that she's helping, vut subtly, without going overboard. He needs to find his own way, but be given a little support.

Lifespan according to Dnd : Grog & Perceval 100 years top, the Twins 180 years, Pike & Scanlan 500 years and Keyleth 1800 years. IMO, Vax saw Keyleth incapable of moving on from her grief as the seasons passed, mourning instead living her life.

The thing that Vax is concerned about with Keyleth, what his vision with her showed and the opening suggests is that once she completes her personal journey, her Aramente, she will effectively become nigh-immortal. She'll only age about 1 year for every decade that passes while all the others have lifespans in the 100-500ish range. Percy is human and has a human lifespan, if he's lucky he'll make it to 80-100 and is currently in his early to mid 20s. Grog likewise has a human-ish lifespan and is suggested by Travis to be in his 40s. Barring falling in battle, they're the two most likely to die first of old age. Next would be the half elves. Keyleth, Vex and Vax are all half elf, half human and as such have a lifespan of about 180-200 years, and all three are in their 20s at the moment with Keyleth about 23 while the twins are 27. Finally the gnomes Scanlan and Pike. They have the longest natural lifespans of the group at about 350-500. Pike is in her late 30s/early 40s while Scanlan is in his late 60s (specifically 69, because why wouldn't he be?). If Keyleth completes her Aramente and becomes a master druid, her 180-200 year life span will dramatically increase, effectively becoming a 1800-2000 year one, minus the decades she would have gotten from the years she already lived. So if she becomes one right now, she's looking at about another 1,600ish years, long outliving every single one of her companions.

I do get what Vax is thinking. It's not rational, but it comes from such an honest and sad place. He's wrong, but his judgement is clouded by becoming the literal ferryman. Ngl, If I got a horrific vision when I kissed someone, I would be thrown way off, too.

8:02 I suspected when I watched the campaign that Pike thought of Grog as more than just a friend. There were too many little moments when Ashley was actually at the table that pinged my radar for me to pass it off as nothing, especially the girl-talk night in Scanlan's mansion. I don't recall anyone agreeing with me. Travis, and therefore Grog, never caught on. This moment timestamped at the top of my post makes me think I may have been right.

Vex said "we can't be more than a fling". She pulled away just like Vax did, but Percy is understanding of Vex's fear and is respectful of her feelings. While Keyleth lashed out at Vax who saw them all dead and her weeping over their grave. Don't forget he told her he loved her and she wasn't ready because of her own fear very recently, to which Vax like Percy was respectful and understanding. The episode shows the difference between Percy's maturity and Keyleth's inexperience in relationships.

I don't think that's a good comparison. Vex pulled away, explained her own feelings, and said she wasn't ready for anything serious yet. She let things open for future change and let Percy make the decision. Meanwhile, Vax unilaterally made the decision for both of them, with no room for change or compromise, under the pretext that Keyleth will suffer, which was her decision to make. Keyleth had no agency on the situation while Percy had a choice. It's not a contrast between Keyleth and Percy. It was a contrast between Vax and Vex.

At the end of season 1, Vax was respectful of HER decision. Here, he is taking a decision FOR her, which is very different. He thinks that it's better for her that she doesn't feel the pain of losing him (even though she's going to either way). I don't blame Keyleth for lashing out, in fact I believe she's 100% in the right, and not immature in the slightest. He caught a glimpse of a future she has had to consider probably ever since she started her Aramenté, and thought he knew better.

I laughed out loud at the show juxtaposing Keyleth and Vax having their angsty conversation with Vex and Percy going at it, because, honestly, that was the way things went in the campaign (just not simultaneously). Vex and Percy always flirted with each other, while Keyleth and Vax had deep, agonizing conversations about their feelings and the daunting obstacles they were facing.

He just agreed to only be friends. It's not about keeping things not serious; she said she wanted to just be friends because it's what she wanted. Their interaction went differently because he listened to why she was making the decision, after he called her out for being too scared to be honest earlier in the episode. Vax did literally the same thing, saying we can't be together. There was no conversation though, because she just said get out. The twins just have different trauma making their decisions for them. The difference is the nature of their partner.

It is weird blame Vax for his fears and be on side Keyleth. Especially you said in the first episode you dont realy like Vax, so...personal likes. They all must go through their obstacles in love. Even for superlover Scanlan:) He even more with his fear to be real Scan as he is.
