That same Russian studio did the art for several PC CD games in the 90s, including Kings Quest VII. So I have a very bizarre nostalgia for their animation style. It's so bad, and yet so distinctive. It's not incompetent, per se, because it's clearly a choice. And a choice they stuck with. For some reason.

Shoutouts to Seth Fulkerson (aka Dopply). Before developing Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, they remade both Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: Wand of Gamelon in their entireties as native PC ports, complete with vastly superior performance that makes them far more playable, practically instant load times, quality-of-life features like better controls and subtitles, and even extras like a playable, caked-up King Harkinian.

I had this game as a kid and, honestly, the most challenging part of it was dealing with the controls. I remember bouncing off of it pretty hard the first couple of times playing it, but when I actually sat down and started chipping away at the levels and progressing, I had a pretty good time. I felt accomplished overcoming this game given that the controls were such garbage. I still think it's an okay game today, though I mostly feel that way because of nostalgia. Also, the music slaps. Though I no longer have the CD-I, I did have the foresight to hang onto Link: Faces of Evil, jewel case and all.
@schawangus
@schawangus Жыл бұрын
Did you play with the “Presentation Controller” or the dedicated game pad when you were a kid? Because that also apparently makes a difference
@deepstothepeeps
@deepstothepeeps Жыл бұрын
@@schawangus We had two controllers, actually. The one that came packed in with the CD-I was a wireless remote control with a small joystick (about the same size as the joystick on the N64 controller). The controller I'm describing is different than the one the GameGrumps used when playing Wand of Gamelon, if you've seen that playthrough. Some time later, we did end up getting the gamepad. Being kids, we weren't very gentle with the gamepad and so we ended up ruining the pins that plugged the gamepad into the CD-I. I can't remember which controller I used to beat Faces of Evil the first time I played it, but I can say that I've beaten it more than once and I definitely used the pack-in remote control at least one of those times.

Just a quick heads up, There's actually an unofficial "HD Remake" of both Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon that fixes a *lot* of the issues inherent in the CDi Versions and makes them... well, not good, but definitely *more* playable. It's in the same limbo as AM2R however, so you'll have to go looking for it yourself. The developer has gone on to start development of a new, spiritual successor to the CD-i Zelda games, "Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore", which takes the silly dumb concept, and actually makes a *good* game out of it. I hope to see Jirard play that one day.

To be honest, I enjoy the concept of Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon. Besides having Zelda be a snarky heroine in the Wand of Gamelon, being pretty neat compared to the submissive, stoic damsel, it's also the setting. I like also the sort of wacky worlds that goes outside of Hyrule. Which is the reason I also prefer Majora's Mask over other Zelda games and it being also a story, outside of the whole 'destiny' spheal, always having Zelda and Ganon, etc. Feels more like a 'hero's journey', where you aren't destined to succeed per say (like being a chosen hero at birth) and don't have the 'evil's bane' to solve your problems. Also more genres of music could be open to experimentation in the series, like with the OST of those games. Mix some guitar, synth sounds, etc. With folk instruments, for example. As games, I don't think CD-I games are good, yeah. But as an attempt at art and also the concepts I mentioned, is something I can appreciate and think about.

I was at FAO Schwarz on a school trip in 1994. My friends and I saw these games on a glass display case. We didn't know what they were, and there was nothing explaining it. It was so exciting at the time.

Believe me Jirard I heard of it. I unironically love these CDi games. I really wish Nintendo would acknowledge them. I prefer Wand of Gamelon because that overworld theme slaps.

It feels so weird to have a “bad” Zelda game. It’s like an oxymoron.
