A masterful routine performed by a legend of magic. I have just retired from a 45-year career as a comedy magician, and without Paul Daniels, it would never have happened.

Wow, may I ask how you got started in that career?
@funjuror10 ай бұрын
@@---zu9qy I was fortunate to appear on a British television talent show called New Faces in 1978. I scored over 100 points, and although I was not the winner, I was able to appear again in what they called "The Near Misses show." After this, agents took notice, and it enabled me to turn pro. :) Paul saw me and helped me form a practical cabaret act that fits in a briefcase so I could perform a good few shows a night (easy reset, etc.).

This is probably the best performance of this trick I have seen - Thanks very much for uploading, previously I had only seen clips on here and it is great to see the whole routine again. Why Paul Daniels left our screens I will never know. I may not always agree with his opinions or the comments he makes in public from time to time, but IMO there is no doubting that he is the greatest magician this country has ever produced. It is a shame he went out of favour with the general public. I believe he is still performing - I would love to see him live. I know people who have met him and every single one of them has commented on how amiable he is and how passionate he is about his art. Would love to see him back on our TV screens.

Wrong. You are correct in the "cover songs vs originals" argument. He didn't invent this, and says as much at the beginning of the routine. But he's VERY fast. Magic is like the blues. There's only so many basic elements (in magic-sleight of hand and misdirection, in the blues-chord structure and topics). The "Magic" in both is the way those basic elements are put together and the proficiency with which they are presented. Daniels, in this routine, shows himself to be a master of the sleight and misdirection. There are certainly DIFFERENT magicians, and there are a number of magicians who do this trick as well, but differently (Penn and Teller come to mind) but this routine takes a VERY old trick and shows a master doing so with ultimate dexterity. Just take one moment during this routine: Watch the very end when he does the lemon/orange switch. You can DIRECTLY view his hands and you can see the moment when he places the orange into the cup (he removes it from his right hand jacket pocket). You know EXACTLY when he's going to do it, you can SEE the moment he does it, but you can't actually SEE HIM DO IT. The camera is directly on him. THAT is in fact extreme speed and ability. It's not original, but it's beautiful.
@guyfawkes99518 жыл бұрын
vernonclassic It's the premise that makes ANY trick. But true, it's not speed, per se, as much as misdirection and manual dexterity that makes the trick work. And often speed is actually a form of misdirection. Watch Shin Lim doing the "Dream Act". Slow, methodical and absolutely gobsmacking the first time you see it. I think we are saying much the same thing but in different ways. The hands have to be dexterous as much or more than fast to pull this stuff off.
@guyfawkes99518 жыл бұрын
vernonclassic Oh, then you're wrong. LOL! Takes a huge combination of talents to be a successful magician. Lots are ok, some are good, very few are truly great.
