One of these days I hope that Kiku will wear my, "Have A Knife Day" t-shirt that I gave him at Blade Show Atlanta. Always a joy to see him at the shows and I hope one day to visit his shop. My wife is originally from Tokyo and her mother still lives in their family home. Kiku, hope you are doing well and my best regards to you and your family. Thank you for making this video to share with us. Yes, I do own a knife directly from Kiku as well as many of the SOG collaboration knives.

This video has presented to me some personal quarrels as I almost always prefer a handforged blade rather than a blade made from a cutout but in the end I can appreciate a craftsman even when their product does not reflect my greatest interests and although I'm sure this blade is still quite expensive, I would assume that a hand forged odachi, katana, or even a santoku could potentially be much pricier. In the end, if I was to pay such an amount for a blade that I was going to use as a showpiece or something to go on the wall, I would almost always choose a handforged odachi created with tamahagane steel but this is just my personal taste nonetheless! Nice video!

I get it, it is easier to just trace a steel into a knife/sword than the traditional forging. And yes the knife/sword produced in this process is beatiful too. But it lacks the spirit, its like a temu blade at this point.

The blade is thick enough for an axe blade, because ive made a few over the years and a 10mm thick or 3/8" is what i used to make a 7.25 pound bush axe. The first blade ive made is getting worn down a little it now weighs only 7 pounds after forty years of very hard use. Im going to pattern it back out and I'll make up another this time out of better steel than the first.
