I used to sell TVs at Walmart, and TCL/Vizio were top sellers, which accurately reflected the budget buyers at the store. Side-by-side, looking hard enough, TCL and Hisense were inferior to Samsung and LG, but the TCL/Hisense had unbeatable prices. To start out, TCL had good enough TVs at very attractive prices. Not too cheap and not too expensive. Now, TCL has the scale and the technology to go big and bring top-tier technology at Samsung, LG, and Sony's level. A major factor to TCL's insane growth is that the Chinese government/provincial governments were known to provide cheap loans to promote industrial production. Building new factories and equipping them is a highly capital intensive. TCL effectively had unlimited loans in their ascendancy, so TCL could lose money without consequences to gain market share until they can compete at Samsung or LG's level.

I think the secret to their success is they offer mid-range TV's with high range level specs and performance. It's really hard to beat TCL pricing and quality . Though recently Hisense has been making a play at it and seems to be doing pretty well. It's even more aggressive with specs and pricing sometimes... though their picture processing and QA seem to be slightly behind TCL. but it's getting their. Every year they get a bit closer to narrowing the gap.
@tmittelstaed21 күн бұрын
The last thing mentioned - practicality - is why TCL is dominating. But, it's NOT like how the video portrays it. The real reason TCL is dominating is because nowadays, people who are buying expensive TVs (anything over $600-$1000) are buying long extended warranties from the retailers. For example I just bought a 98 inch 4k TV set for a corporate conference room and it's TCL. I bought it from Best Buy and got a 5 year warranty on it because when you spend that much money on something you do not want it to fail in a year and a day right after the manufacturer's warranty runs out. Instead if it fails you want to go to the store and have them send 2 guys out who will take the monster off the wall and put a replacement up. You get that if you get the store warranty. So in that class of TV's the stores are going to only stock brands that don't have a high failure rate. I bought the TCL tv because that was the only brand the retailer stocked in that class and price range, and the reason it was the only brand in that class and price range is because the store doesn't want to stock TVs that most buyers are going to get a store warranty on that have a high failure rate.

The only problem with a TCL/Hisense is that it's an extremely good panel but the upscaling is not even close to what a samsung or sony offers. Native content plays great but since there isn't a lot of native high resolution content available, so since you are relying on upscaling for watching sports/live tv or watching content via netflix which is known to notoriously save bandwidth by streaming at 1440p to 4K screens and its very rare that you get a true 4K signal which is again not even close to bluray quality, so low bitrate native content. which is why you need to think your usecase and content consumption habits to know what kind of stuff you are looking for, going for a samsung means even 720p will look good on 4K panel, but 720p will look like 720p on a TCL/Hisense with close to no upscaling
@gman76utube8 ай бұрын
I think you’re on to something, the extra magic that makes a good looking image is the video processing ASIC, whether it’s upscaling or adjusting colors, contrast, black levels on the fly. Maybe it could be better in the area of shadow detail, but it’s much better than cheap 4k tvs. And also not crushing whites.

I was skeptical about Chinese brands like Hisense and TCL. So I started following reviews on the TCL QM8 from various YTubers I follow. Not seeing the TV in person but impressed with the price, reviews and how close the QM8 was compared to previous years OLEDs I pulled the trigger last August and still amazed on how the TV performs. Although it’s not an exact match for the ultra detailed black levels, motion clarity and specular highlights like typical OLEDs, the high brightness levels, not having to baby-sit the TV to avoid burn and lower costs per size of the TV in was my selling point. There are some cons such as the QM8 UI is not ultra snappy like my Samsung or ATV. It takes a bit for the UI to be fully loaded and functional. Which is pretty disappointing for TCL’s flagship line. Seems as if the software updates have been slowing things down compared to day one of ownership. Overall it was a good bargain.

I'd like to see TCL make 50" and larger with *NO* smart TV features, instead allowing the buyer to choose their streaming device from the likes of Amazon, Apple, nVidia and Roku connected over the HDMI port. That way, TCL could cut the price of their TV's even more.

Sony also uses Samsung OLED panels for their high-end models like the A95K and A95L. These models are superior to Samsung's models that use the same panels, as they have a better processor, better heatsink on the back of the screen to cool and extend the lifespan of the panel, and they license Dolby Vision so you can watch the highest quality HDR content. Samsung still doesn't license Dolby Vision and most titles don't have HDR10+, so you're almost always limited to standard HDR on Samsung TVs. I believe most reviewers rate the Sony XR-77A95L as the absolute best TV currently available.

I got a TCL TV a couple years ago, thinking I was just getting something cheap and disposable. But I was pleasantly surprised! First, the interface was more responsive than other TVs I'd used. That might sound like a small thing, but it's actually huge. And I had no idea what the "Roku" thing was supposed to be but it means I'm getting free ad-supported TV and movies. I particularly like that it's not just the latest generic content. I've been using it for the 1976 _Bionic Woman_ show and 1984's _Murder, She Wrote._

@tim31728 ай бұрын
@@TheAbinn Ehhh... a lot of their screens suffer from vignetting. Their OLEDs have ultra-extreme ABL dimming. Their newest series have buzzy, shrill, inductors of poor quality that sound like the TV is dying all the time. They're stuck on 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs because they refuse to produce their own SoCs and instead use garbage MediaTek chipsets which are slow, have insufficient RAM for Google TV, and are limited in HDMI bandwidth. They're, no doubt, the king of color science, but they're far from the king of screens overall.
