I thought it was because the father looked at what his son had created and had a "come-to-jesus" moment that strictly following the instructions for a toy meant to unlock your imagination was massively missing the point. The son had created a wonderful and imaginative journey that the father never could create while he was stuck adhering to a perspective that these toys were meant to create a singular scene or tableau.

So, I gotta be that guy for a minute: The turning point is where the son, playing Emmett, says "you don't have to be the bad guy". It's his son inviting him to be the hero in the son's life, to not be a tyrant who's lost touch with the magical elements in life. The story is about not forgetting to breathe and to dream and to play. :)

The multiple messages were actually all about "individualism." There are subtleties of the message throughout the entire film. From the people of Bricksburg being obsessed with consumerism and pop culture, to the Master Builders aspiring for creativity, to President Business / the father learning not to condem one's creativity. One of the best written family films I've ever seen.
