Although Luigi does get unfairly limited screen time in the movie, and I know a lot of people like to make fun of or make parodies about Mario being a bigshot and hogging the spotlight while Luigi always gets bullied, I was really touched by the brotherly bond the two had in this film, and it really warmed my heart to see how much the two cared about each other, and seeing how close Mario was to break down in tears after reuniting with his brother was quite wholesome. Not to mention Mario always looking out for his little bro and Luigi supporting his brother's dream and overcoming his fear in the final act. Reminded me of my connection with my brother

@@philipconklin2830 This is a movie based on a video game franchise that all of us played as kids. So OF COURSE it's going to lean heavily into nostalgia and easter eggs since it's specifically targetting people who play or have played the games. And since when have Mario games had deep storylines?? Plus it's a kids' movie at the end of the day. When I went to see it, the audience was 80% kids with their families. So honestly if you're holding it up to high standards, that's on you. It's a very simple, fun movie that's entertaining to watch, and that's all anyone wanted from it.

2:16 I feel a lot of people miss something here. I noticed this on a 2nd watch of the movie, Peach told the council of Toads that she was gonna leave for the Kong Kingdom THE NEXT MORNING. She wasn’t planning on leaving right then and there. When she met Mario (a potentially concerned citizen) and heard that his brother was captured by Bowser, Mario himself insisted on coming with. She wanted to test Mario’s ability and see if he was capable enough to actually face the potential dangers. You have to remember that she admires bravery and determination. She saw his determination to want to save his brother himself and respected it. By the next morning, even though Mario (ultimately) didn’t pass the course, she let him tag along cause she liked his tenacity. I’m sure if he didn’t show any progress at all by the morning, she wouldn’t have let him come. Ultimately, she didn’t “waste time” training Mario, because as she said, she wasn’t planning on leaving till the morning anyway. She probably would’ve slept or something within that time until she left at daylight. You may believe she actually should’ve left right away, but that wasn’t her plan, so it’s not a flaw within the script. Whether or not you want to count her not leaving right away as a critique, her taking time for Mario was not. That part is covered. That one line of dialogue is just very easy to miss.

If Mario hadn't appeared would she have just had a nice luxurious dinner and gone to bed before walking all the way to her destination when time is of the essence to save the entire kingdom? Story wise it doesn't make sense.
@NivMizzet89 Жыл бұрын
@@gymnastgirlflips I think most of that's implied to be happening off-screen. The wait until next morning is (presumably) to make time for any necessary preparations and arrangements for such a journey. With or without Mario, at the very least some time is needed to decide how the kingdom is going to be run in the meantime (and what happens if the journey does run into complications). Leaving the next morning makes a lot more sense than running off at once.
@Goro_Maj1ma7 ай бұрын
@GuyWithNoNickName cool still doesn't make sense. Why did she not leave immediately? Why did she not use the time to prepare more readily instead of choosing to help Mario? Yeah, all these people whining about the film being too "safe" drive me nuts. Like... How exactly was this too safe? This is basically the first video game movie to take the plunge and completely embrace its source material instead of feeling the need to change it in some way to try to optimize those profits. They made a Mario movie, and they let the fact its Mario speak for itself. The plot might be standard, but this film worked its ass off to be a Mario movie.
@ewormXD Жыл бұрын
@@ElvenRaptor Embrace its source material??? By having princess Peach be a kick-ass warrior rather than needing help and Mario, the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, not being a hero NOR from the Mushroom Kingdom? Luigi was allowed to be a scaredy-cat, but that only works when he is nonetheless determined to act, save Mario, save the Kingdom etc - in this case he was absolutely useless, being imprisoned for the entire movie, and the "brothers stronger together" angle the movie was going for (and the "Bros" in the title) was therefore completely inappropriate. I went into the film with low expectations and still ended up disappointed by the "fish out of water saves everyone" movie #48096, and that's only the last decade or so. Why can't a hero be a hero? Why can't Mario be from the world of Mario? Why can't a princess be a princess, rather than the greatest warrior in the land? Mario didn't need a family of assholes either and the only potential good thing they could've done with that - ie. Luigi being his emotional support, the one person who, despite needing his help a lot, actually helps Mario more than he could ever know by just always being there for him - was dropped for the sake of "well, the princess can't be the kidnapped one, that's not how we write women now". And hell, why keep introducing interesting ideas and completely ignore them for the sake of the aforementioned boring plot? There's a portal between Mushroom Kingdom and the human world. Again, I hate the human world being a part of the story, but at least make something out of it - the portals, especially on the Mushroom World's side, is not even hidden or anything, how has nobody stumble upon it before? If Peach has to be a foreigner to her own f*ckin' Kingdom, who f*ckin' wrote this, at least give that a proper explanation and make it mean something. If the Mario Bros come into a foreign world, make them ACT like they've come to a foreign world and make the foreign world act like they're foreign to it. Peach was made into a princess (what happened to the former royalty? Or did the Toads actually establish monarchy just because a woman showed up, those simps?) but a second human - only the second human ever, after the princess herself - gets a couple weird looks at most? I'm not expecting a story that elaborates on and explains every little bit, but a story that tries to marry a "fish out of water" story (one of the three stories Hollywood has at this point) with the games' premise is just incoherent. Heck, my old old idea about Mario and Luigi being the royal plumbers does the "unlikely hero" scenario better. In that one, Mario hated his lot in life and actually created tunnels under the castle in order to escape and seek a better life, with Bowser coincidentally coming upon said tunnels and using them to kidnap Peach. And it's Luigi, Mario's sole family and cowardly yet heroic sort, who convinces him that they should help, rather than escape. Ta-dah, the plumber nobodies end up the heroes, with Mario learning to love the Mushroom Kingdom as he travels through its wondrous lands, and eventually saving it not due to guilt or obligation, but out of sheer heroism and maybe a smidge of attraction towards the princess who turns out not to be the stuck-up arrogant royalty he had pictured. Hardly the best idea for a Mario film, with Mario himself being quite a different character from the brave optimist hero of the games, but if the movie had to do a f*ckin' "origin story" for said game hero (like this one we got), at least make it unique and interesting.

@@ewormXD "Embrace its source material???" Yes. "By having princess Peach be a kick-ass warrior rather than needing help and Mario, the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, not being a hero NOR from the Mushroom Kingdom?" That's how Miyamoto has gone on record saying he imagined her, and she has played the role of fighter several times over the years. Seriously, read the Nintendo Power Mario comic where she's the exact same way. Back in the 90s. Except she did end up needing help, because her attempts to save her kingdom fail, and she did end up needing Mario's help. Not sure how you missed that. "Luigi was allowed to be a scaredy-cat, but that only works when he is nonetheless determined to act, save Mario, save the Kingdom etc - in this case he was absolutely useless, being imprisoned for the entire movie, and the "brothers stronger together" angle the movie was going for (and the "Bros" in the title) was therefore completely inappropriate." Not even remotely. Luigi was determined to act. He took action as soon as he was able to again. Not sure how you missed that, either. "I went into the film with low expectations and still ended up disappointed by the "fish out of water saves everyone" movie #48096, and that's only the last decade or so." This is not a new element to the Mario series. Mario and Luigi in cartoon and film adaptations always start as fish out of water. It's a part of the story Nintendo chooses to tell in media outside of the games. "Why can't a hero be a hero? Why can't Mario be from the world of Mario?" Because Mario is always from Brooklyn in media outside of the games. Look up how the Nintendo of America always told his story and how that was reflected in the old cartoons and even the 1986 animated film, and the 1993 film. And Mario was the hero. "Why can't a princess be a princess, rather than the greatest warrior in the land?" How to tell you're sexist without telling me you're sexist. "Mario didn't need a family of assholes either and the only potential good thing they could've done with that - ie. Except Mario's connection to Luigi was what kept him going when he was trying to save him. And yes, how dare Mario begin the film at a starting point that he grows past. How terrible./s "And hell, why keep introducing interesting ideas and completely ignore them for the sake of the aforementioned boring plot? There's a portal between Mushroom Kingdom and the human world." That exists in all adaptations of Mario Bros without explanation in other media, too. Seriously, where have you been for the last 30 years? "Again, I hate the human world being a part of the story, but at least make something out of it - the portals, especially on the Mushroom World's side, is not even hidden or anything, how has nobody stumble upon it before?" We don't know they haven't, and it was located way down in an abandoned part of the sewers the bros fell into that no one had been to for years. "If Peach has to be a foreigner to her own f*ckin' Kingdom, who f*ckin' wrote this, at least give that a proper explanation and make it mean something." ...You're really that surprised with Peach being the only human aside from the Bros? I didn't find it to be incoherent at all. The toads loved and respected the child they adopted enough to make her the princess. Sometime it doesn't need to be super complex. You also sound like a whiny bitch at this point. "Heck, my old old idea about Mario and Luigi being the royal plumbers does the "unlikely hero" scenario better." ...You're mad that your personal headcanon wasn't used in the film? Okay, I can see that you're just the entitled kind of fan who really doesn't deserve to be listened to. Thank God you will never work in the business. "In that one, Mario hated his lot in life and actually created tunnels under the castle in order to escape and seek a better life, with Bowser coincidentally coming upon said tunnels and using them to kidnap Peach. And apparently, an overwhelming majority find the film interesting. Must suck having such a minority opinion. Now run along, little bitch.

@@ElvenRaptor I'm glad your argument for how they stuck to the source material is "look at other adaptations, not the games"
@ElvenRaptor Жыл бұрын
@@ewormXD Oh, but it wasn't always this way. The film did stick to the source material of the earlier games, actually. The narrative for Mario and Luigi was that they were from Brooklyn until 1996. It was only after "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" that Nintendo decided they were from the Mushroom Kingdom. And the only reason Nintendo did this was to keep things simple in the games. The Mario series, outside of the RPGs, has always been minimalist when it comes to story. Making this change made things simpler, like Nintendo like. Like I said, those early cartoons and 1993 film gave Mario and Luigi the origins Nintendo wanted them to have. Mario and Luigi being from Brooklyn is not an Illumination invention. This is Nintendo's doing. The very company that created them wants them from Brooklyn in any media that's meant to tell a story. Believe me, few are more surprised that they brought back the "plumbers from Brooklyn" story from the old days more than older Mario fans. As for Princess Peach's portrayal, the games outside of the RPGs haven't really been able to portray her personality at all until relatively recently, but Miyamoto has always made it clear he saw her a take charge and fight back kind of girl. And in the RPGs, she was always consistently active, never just laying down and letting Mario do the work there, either. She was always doing everything she could help Mario win the battle, even if it meant constantly escaping her prison and sneaking around to drip-feed him information either through Twink or emails. Seriously, how do you not know any of this? Did you never check out the earlier games or the RPGs?

I KNEW as soon as I saw the eel part in the theater that that was going to be the “super easy, barely an inconvenience” part of this pitch meeting

I was thinking he would mention how Bowser is defeated using a blue mushroom to make him tiny/put him in a jar... throughout the whole movie when people get hit the mushroom powers go away-All Bowser had to do was hit himself, grow back, and bust out of that jar.
@KasumiKenshirou Жыл бұрын
Maybe someone else has to hit you? They don't really specify how HARD you need to be hit, either. At the end when he's in the cage, when his cage is shaken he kind of hits the back of it but doesn't grow. (When that happened I expected he was going to grow and break out of the cage as a tease for the next movie.)

That’s absolutely going to be how he escapes in the sequel

I was literally thinking to myself this morning about what a mario movie pitch meeting would look like and here it is! Me and my family love all your comedy skits and pitch meetings, and we always love to sit down after a long day and have a laugh. Thank you and let's a go!

In Peach's defense, she did say she was leaving in the morning. The obstacle course did not disrupt her schedule at all.

Which is also why they leave even though Mario fell just short of completing the course. Time to go, not waiting on him to give it another try.

Some people nitpicking that scene. I love it. I recognised things in that scene!!! 😆

So...to be clear...you three think there wasn't anything else to be done in preparation for a journey to literally save her whole world...other than watch some guy jump. Yeah, you're all so clever.

1:45, also Mario in this movie, as was already established in Brooklyn, is great at keeping his head about him in potentially dangerous situations in stark contrast to the more easily frightened Luigi
