You may think I'm a nut case. I worked 5 years in the early analog cellular days. Had a Motorola flip phone glued to my right ear most of the time. Companies deny it, but I later suffered with an Acoustic Neuroma in my right ear for no known reason. Had to have a brain operation and now I suffer from loud tinnitus in that ear. This is a benign brain tumor. Constant RF on your brain will cause problems. Always tell them to use a speaker mike and hold the radio away from the head. I have this Leixen UHF and it really solves the Bofung low power problem in the house and in town away from repeaters. I haven't measured the power, but after watching this video i will do that. Thank You//KE6QK

im a newbie..wonderin if that can be used as a mobile repeater, so we can clearly transmit using our cheap radios? were on hvac business we need clear transmission when installing long pipe of aircon. we seldom have trouble on our cheap radios in close high wall buildings, proper repeater is impractical to set up for we only work just a day or max 3 days and need to mobilize again to other project.

Thanks for reviewing the radio. Not sure that I would want to have that much power near my eyes but for a remote location with external antenna you would surely be able to access distant repeaters. Wonder what would happen if you did some 10 minute TX tests? Would the radio limit power as it heats up. With that much power that sucker is going to get hot fast. Do you have any information on the antenna design? Might be extra long to get the RF away from the body.

Right. I think maybe I got a fluke radio, I don't think they will all transmit this way. But even 25-watts, as advertised, I wouldn't want to key-up right next to my face.

I bought one of these radios, but using the software that came with the radio, I can't break squelch on a single repeater. I can hear repeaters but not communicate with them. I know how to program a radio for repeaters, and when I set a second HT to receive on the frequency and PL tone a repeater would, I can break squelch on this second HT. Then why can't I break squelch on the repeater with the same frequency parameters? The software that came with the radio doesn't seem to have a specific setting for a PL tone but allows for setting a QT/DQT value (whatever that is). Initially I thought this was a PL tone setting, but perhaps not. Any thoughts?

4W to what? How you can define the e.r.p. power exposing your head if you did not defined the radiating device!!! Do not scare people without exact data... Did you found the SAR level for that frequencies and defined antenna? Please conscious that radiated power is decreasing with square of distance... Of course no doubt that external antenna and mic at high power level is recommended. Also there is big "High power / RF energy" warning writen in the manual. Also in my manual is stated that at highest power level it should be used with external antenna far from body. Anyway I do not thing it is big issue as the transmission is done just for short spots only (as in my case I am mostly in receiving mode, hi) Important is to understand that the main idea of this radio is combination of handheld (at 5W) and mobile radio (at 10 / 25W using car external antenna) so you are not exposed to high RF (head close to whip...)

That much power out of an HT might not be safe RF exposure, especially if your holding the mic close to your mouth. I thought that was the main reason much manufacturers only produce 5W radios.
