No one told me how addictive this hobby is. I started in radio 6 months ago, licensed for 2 months now, and I started with a lowly UV-5R and Randy informing me about GMRS. Flash forward to today and I have 27 different handhelds, a 25w mobile in my girls car, a 50v2 in my car, a 50v2 as a base station, a spectrum analyzer, swr meter, a ton of antennas I don’t need, and all the accessories. I’ve been ordering a radio every week, Sunday my retevis RB-17P arrives. I’m so bad that I spend my time at night studying RF, Cold War numbers stations, GMRS, and even ham. I joined my local amateur radio club after getting ahold of them on their repeater (wouldn’t recommend just got lucky). I think my girlfriend is right and I may need therapy. Thanks Randy!

Lease time is an attractive option for operational security when you use encryption. Not so much on a radio without encryption. Since I didn't hear you mention encryption I'd bet that got tossed in for marketing purposes. Amp hours is deceiving when you don't take voltage into account. This battery has three times the energy of a 4000ah battery in your cell phone. Watt hours is a better comparison. There's a general rule for radio. Only use as much power as you need. Do that and you should get pretty good talk time.

I could see the self destruct being useful for a rental company. Once your rental agreement is up, if it kaputs, you're more likely to get the radio back. Also, since it is a business radio, i could see it being useful for keeping control of the radios. If you're only supposed to have a radio for a few hours, say to hand out to contractors working onsite, then you could get them to shut up at the end of their shift. If it no worky, they have to bring it back, so it doesn't go missing from the tool room all the time (not that anyone ever permanently borrows stuff from company stock)

Point here is if an adaptor was used, connecting to the proper band antenna mounted up at roofline down in the calley valley, will the distance be comparable to the actual test? 🤔 Apr 14 Mod the condensor mic element . My uv6r reaquired a element right out of box, 9 cold solder joints on the k jacks, speaker function. Spacing between jacks was less than the speaker mic male pins therefore breaking the solder connections of pc board, but was repairable..so now the uv 6r sets on the shelf collecting dust since a battery is very pia to find. Few SMA antennas for handheld radios are made for this much power (many are only 5W and better ones, like the Nagoya NA-771, are still only 10W). So I'm surprised HYS used an SMA antenna connector for this radio. I'd prefer a BNC connector and HYS makes BNC antennas for handhelds that handle more power. So I'd recommend that users, who buy this radio and plan to use a different antenna, get a Female SMA-to-Female BNC adapter with a good mounting collar for strength. If you want to switch to a GMRS-tuned antenna, HYS makes a nice 1/2-wave 15.3-inch BNC whip which is tuned to 462-467 MHz that is rated for 20W that would probably be sufficient in light of the power measurements you are getting. I adapted all of my 10W TIDRadio TD-H8 and 10W Baofeng AR-152 radios to BNC and use HYS 20W BNC antennas with them.

FCC limits the power for hand held radios to 5 watts for safety reasons; however, as a HAM myself I happen to know “someone” who has two 8 watt hand helds and loves them. 😅 The safety concerns are real if you’re using them continuously and for long periods of time. I seriously doubt short transmissions, like those encountered in a SHTF situation (calling for help, etc.) would be dangerous. It is also highly likely that the radio isn’t actually radiating the full 25 watts (marketing 😊)

Yes, I love his sarcastic sense of humor. I am not sure what I like most, good information or good humor. I like his videos. Now for a self appointed KZbin 'expert' to attempt to answer your question: This radio demonstrated is not a GMRS radio. GMRS radios are specially certified and marketed as GMRS radios. The radio he demonstrated is actually a commercial band radio. While these radios can be programmed to listen to GMRS radios, they are not intended for or allowed by the FCC to talk on GMRS frequencies. Also, GMRS and commercial licenses are two different things. Some radios that can use GMRS frequencies are restricted for listening only. If you want to talk on GMRS, get a GMRS license and radio. If you want to skip the licensing, get an FRS or CB radio. Using a commercial radio on GMRS can be complicated, requiring special programming and having legal issues. I hope that answers your questions. This guy has tons of great videos, with new ones coming out all the time. Happy watching.

There’s the concern about whether RF causes any problems to your brain, I’m supposing those might be the types of studies you mentioned that you couldn’t find any evidence of this. But the other issue is that it is possible to be physically burned by excessive exposure. So I wouldn’t disregard the concerns entirely, but better to proceed cautiously and use your good judgement and just don’t talk so long. Great Video! Great Price! Also, just because it seems to have the 25 watts on the carrier, doesn’t mean you have to use it all the time. This radio would probably make the 30 mile trip to the repeater on medium or even low. Measured TX power would be within the accuracy range of the Handheld and the meter used. Good Vid!

I am curious if the antenna will hold up in the long term. Most handheld antennas are only designed to handle a maximum of 10 watts otherwise the loading coil can burn up. Also, the low mic audio could just simply be because the radio is set to narrowband FM by default and you talking on a wideband channel, which will cause your deviation to be too low.

Funny ✅ Informative ✅ Subscribed ✅ Very nicely done. I just started looking into handhelds. Thank you sir!!👍🏾

I appreciate how you demystify context with relation to Radio communications. As a complete beginner, I find your videos helpful. Direct and simple is also my preference. I was considering buying the Wouxun KG-935G which I understood was your favorite radio. Then I discovered this video. Would you recommend the HYS 25 above the KG935G? GMRS License? Please share your thoughts. Many thanks.

I recommend the radio that best fits your specific needs and preferences.

@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you for your prompt response. They both appear to be evenly appropriate for my application. They both appear to be good quality product ...so the question is which one offers an advantage, or an edge, over the other? This is all very new to me. Of all the videos I've seen, yours are the most helpful and with the preferred simplicity of clarity. BTW. I looked on the FCC webpage and found nothing with relation to license pertaining to this type of radio. If It is not a major imposition, would you be able to link me to the topic on that website? At your convenience, of course. With Many Thanks.

@@TheNotaRubicon67 year retiree who hasn’t been in the CB a world since 1979. Want to get back into it but everything has changed so much and I forgot what I did know. I want to be able to talk out of my local area. I don’t want to go through the process of ham radio licensing. I’m on a SS low fixed income so like to keep the budget low as possible. Would prefer a base station or mobile with power pack. I had a Cobra SSB with a Starduster antenna back then. Farthest I talked was Newfoundland. I don’t understand all the talk of 10, 11 ..etc meters or am/fm. Prefer radio and antenna for $200 under. Is that possible. Don’t want to rule out Ham combo but don’t want the licensing. As you can tell by this question I don’t know much and forgot what I did know.

Great video. Today, all my family cellphones went down across 3 different systems. I need 5 of these to leave in our vehicles for this type emergency. Could i purchase 5 of these and keep all on same station, could we converse if cells go diwn? Thank you for any advice.

Can you charge the battery or operate the radio from the 12v cigarette lighter in your vehicle or just the wall charger? Keep up the great work.

Interesting radio - Thanks for another great review. So the "electronic lease", If the radio is encrypted, which you did not mention that it was (or was not) so this may not apply, then a "lease" could protect your encrypted comms should the radio be lost or fall into the "wrong hands". I can't thing of any other good reason for the "lease".

I paid $25 for a front row seat to this comedy show, and it was funny, but he's kinda a one trick pony. Does he ever do any subjects but radios? Great video, your humor is obviously better than mine. I'm learning a lot, getting licensed next week.

There is a LEIXEN version of this with a digital screen and i think it holds about 500 memory channels. Same amount of watts, still think its UHF i believe. Would you be willing to do a review/educated background of the radio with the consideration if its worth having producing 25watts? I have read in a few areas its good for a really bad SHTF scenario (probably) but to use regularly might be dangerous? Is that an accurate assessment? Keep these videos coming!

By far, the most entertaining nerdspeak I’ve heard in quite some time. But, I have a question. Would a second set of two (2) radios TX and RX connected to the first pair?
@TheNotaRubicon2 жыл бұрын
If they come with the same RX/TX codes, then yes. I assume they all come with the same codes, but i dont know this for a fact. If they dont, you can reprogram them with the software and cable.. But, they probably do.

I assume Conrad was driving on a straight road for 25 miles, thus making it a line-of-sight distance measurement? Thank you for this video, I didn't know about this radio, so I'll buy a couple. Amazon has them for $209.99 now, still a great bargain.

25 watts for a walkie talkie? I'm a licensed ham and have been for over 19 years, 25 watts is usually seen in small base or mobile stations, plus at certain frequencies, you can actually get burned by that much power. if this video is true, i can see my using it as a small simplex repeater lol. using an outdoor antenna of course, never the stock duck lol.
