The letter that led to the founding of Israel | Featured Documentary

In November 1917, Britain’s Balfour Declaration opened the door to the founding of Israel 30 years later. And it has had a major impact on the Middle East.
The British government issued a public statement that contained a letter from Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour to Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community. He forwarded it to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. It began, “His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and was the first public statement of support for Zionism by a major political power.

Secondly a statesman’s job is to balance competing interests but to look after his own state first. I don’t buy the contention of this film that the British were deluded about the extent of influence that Weisman’s people might have. We can only speculate about what this influence might have been used for. Possibly to move opinion in the USA behind the war. Balfour’s letter did not promise a homeland and it provided a safeguard for the Palestinians. Many foreign officers took their task of safeguarding Palestinians very seriously. They were eventually overwhelmed by the Irgun and other terrorists. Britain’s whole imperial edifice was collapsing. Unfortunately when you are in charge you get the blame.

No real British people were consulted either. 99% didn't have the vote and when they were allowed it, it was a sop to prevent a real and uncontrolled revolution here. Historians on the first world war always give the general view that it was a human catastrophe all around and that nothing was gained from it. If one confines their assessment from the perspective of the military campaigns on the western front, this holds true. Not so however when it comes to the middle east campaign. One can look upon the Balfour Declaration as also a declaration of victory for the Great War. The consolidation of that victory would take time and there would be numerous setbacks and even disasters to be overcome. Yet the Jewish people and their global supporters always ensured their "homeland" would endure in the end. Unless the present Palestinian leaders and other influencial heads of state don't stop conjuring up another "ghost dance" in the wish to somehow turn back the clock of time and undo the losses suffered through the hours of 73, 67, 56, 48 and 1917's zero hour; the everyday hardworking Palestinian will only continue to suffer "ad infinitum".
