The TV licence fee is due to rise in line with inflation from next spring. This could add nearly £15 to the fee next year, taking it to £173.30. This comes as Rishi Sunak warned the BBC must be "realistic" over how much it expects people to pay for the licence fee as he welcomed cuts at the broadcaster, and Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said that 400,000 fewer people opted out of paying for the BBC’s services last year because “they didn’t think it was affordable, or they didn’t want those services anymore.” So should the licence fee be frozen to ensure people can pay for the service or is it unreasonable to expect it not to rise in line with inflation?

Even if sky didn't include any BBC channels, by law, you would still need a licence to watch it. BTW I'm not saying that's right. Just what the law is. Personally I think this must change. Where else in the world would it be acceptable to charge for propaganda. I think it's about time the BBC was scrapped. How about having a referrendum on the subject. Should a licence be required to watch non BBC services? I'm pretty sure which way that would go.

The BBC considers itself the world's premier broadcaster. As such, why should it have anything to fear for competing in the commercial arena? Just scrap the license fee and run advertising...we stopped paying it because we rarely used iPlayer and never watch any live TV, so cutting it completely was no biggie. Not sure why that guy finds it so hard to believe people can go a whole year without watching anything on BBC. With all the quality stuff to watch on other, better streaming services, it's reallllly easy 😂 We don't miss it, though if it was free with ads we'd probably check in every now and then. If not we'll just keep streaming elsewhere 🙂

they get income from advertising via their non UK platforms (the BBC news website outside the UK is covered in ads) and commercial UKTV arm, BBC America etc, advertising on channels 1,2 and 3 would not be a big step, at the moment its cheaper to get streaming service without ads. They spend huge sums on a few select shows with the intent to then sell abroad, not for our benefit (top gear, Dr Who, Graham norton, make them lots of money but we subsidize these shows for them to profit from external sources).

If only more people realised that all they have to do is stop paying it. Don't contact them, there is no legal requirement to explain stopping paying it. If they come to your door, say 'no thank you' and close it in their face. They cannot enter your home without a warrant. I stopped paying years ago, I never contacted them. I still get regular threatening letters addressed to 'the legal occupier' and have had one visit. It's all bluster, just stop paying it.

The best advice I can give you is to never open the door for them when they do visit, which is rare for me. They’re not allowed to enter your house, even the police will say why did you let them in the first place.

The government seem to think that people are not paying the licence fee because they can't afford it. They ignore the fact that a lot of people don't watch the BBC anymore and the licence fee is not worth it anymore. Currently it's approx £160 per year/£13+ per month spewing out repeat programs on a constant basis. There are alternative to watching the BBC, such as Netflix and Sky which people are prepared to pay for as the programmes are better imo. Plus, if you decide to not subscribe anymore you don't get goons coming round to harrass you and threaten you with court action if you cancel the subscription either. Imo the government funds the BBC to use as a propoganda mouthpiece and that is the main reason why they won't scrap it!

The guests on this video talk about the BBC news presenters being viewers companions. Other channels have news presenters too! If the BBC think their content is so high quality, then move to a subscription model and let them see exactly how many people think the same. Or, keep the license fee and just remove the restriction of watching live TV so people can opt out if they don't want the BBC but still watch live TV on other channels. I don't see why the BBC should get any money if you want to watch live TV on another channel - they don't get anything from the fee. Better still, just abolish it. The BBC is no longer fit for purpose. The TV licence is optional. It is only necessary to purchase a TV licence in order to watch or record live broadcast TV or use the BBC iPlayer. Streamed on-demand content does not require a TV licence. This includes ITVX, More 4, My 5, KZbin, Amazon Prime, Netflix and the on-demand content of Sky, BT, Now etc.

There’s nothing I would watch on bbc, I don’t pay the licence fee and I won’t in any future, I stopped watching any broadcasting 2017 with a live to service, I haven’t missed a thing, Netflix is all I watch about 20 hours a week and I don’t miss it if I have to turn it off for a month because of the cost of living crisis, which is a government controlled con. Just copy NRK's new model; well, the model has been around for a number of years now and has been proven to be a great solution. The cost to would go down to just a few quid for everyone because our population is so large, and would generate too much money, which can then support newspapers and other quality journalism. Read up on NRK funding; it's not something I can explain in a KZbin comment. Britain is not the only country with very high-quality public broadcaster. There's nothing special about the BBC in that sense; I am sure the people of Norway are just emotional and respectful of NRK. Sweden has also adopted the NRK model. I talk about NRK because, like the BBC, the broadcaster is very well respected. For a country with a low population, NRK has done exceedingly well with its global reputation.

There is. I remember it over in Eastern Europe, where certain national t.v. stations were encrypted. And that's going back nearly 20 years.
