In today’s episode, Becket chats with Cynthia Garrett about her new book, “The Naked Truth: Reclaiming Sexual Freedom in a Culture of Lies.”
Cynthia navigates the misinformation in the world around us and helps us see the truth about sex, sexuality, and sexual freedom. Within the pages of “The Naked Truth,” readers will see how the sexual
revolution did not provide freedom; rather it brought bondage, and how feminism turned out to be a failed experiment.
“Everywhere you look, sex and sexuality are being defined, redefined, manipulated, twisted, and maligned,” says Garrett. “Terrified of being labeled ‘intolerant,’ Christians have been silent
while the world has spoken loudly. No more.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

My boyfriend and I met at Biola, dated for 2 years, got engaged, then tied the knot. We've only known each other (and I mean "know" in the biblical sense) and no one else. Many times over our 30+ years of marriage I thought, "God, You designed this, You are so wise, and we're so glad we did it Your way." We weren't perfect by any means, but we tried to heed God's Word about not trespassing against each other and treating each other with honor and purity. That built a foundation of trust as we entered our holy union.

We had a private small group of women that were working on our marriages. We were going to do a book together about sexuality but the leader shot it down. I argued for it, stating that it did not have to be graphic or a counseling session. But simply a biblical perspective on sexuality. I also said if we can’t talk about sex at church where should we go? Love both your perspectives. So valuable.

I totally agree. I'm working at connecting the women at my church and ministering to them. And I've thought how I'd love to find a way to include sex in the available topics. I enjoy a wonderful sex life with Mr husband, but I don't assume that's true for many of them. If they can't talk about it with trusted women in the church family, where should they go? And Satan uses it to damage marriages all the time!

I am a man, and I honestly believe that "purity culture" and feminism played a large role in the reason why I had sexual desires for other men instead of women. "Purity culture" taught me that women hate sex while only men desire sex. It also taught me that sex is inherently harmful for women. Feminism taught me that a man's sexual desire for a woman is inherently predatory. Therefore, I became fearful and disgusted by the idea of sex with a woman. A sexual relationship with another man appealed to me more because if only men enjoy sex, then the only type of sex that is mutually pleasurable is homosexual behavior between two men. Because feminism taught me that women hated men, I did not want anything to do with a woman. Fast forward to today, and this same fear in me resurfaced with the rise of the Me Too movement, which further demonized male heterosexuality. Feminism and "purity culture" have more in common that people realize.

Great interview! As someone who was a very new Christian teenager during the "purity" push in the late 90s/early 2000s, I 100% agree that it ended up doing a LOT of damage, especially to people young in the faith. I saw firsthand how it led to legalism in the area of relationships, not just for my friends but in my own life. While my original goal was to not even kiss before marriage, the man I eventually married and I did way more than that, regretfully. But since we didn't "technically" have sex, he was ok with it, whereas for me, I felt so guilty and ruined, I didn't think I had any other choice than to marry him. That flawed understanding that was the foundation of my decision led to years of stress and heartache that could have been avoidable. Thank the Lord for His faithfulness to change us from the form He finds us in when we're bound up in sin by teaching us wisdom and increasing our faith and trust in Him and His way. ❤ You know, I've never watched Sex and the City, but now that you mention the whole "gay men in women's bodies" things, I can totally see that in what I know of the show from friends who watched it, and gay men's behavior, also from friends (that are gay)! That blew my mind when you said that, especially considering how many people I knew that were modeling their lifestyles after it. I think Cynthia is right that the Church doesn't dialogue enough, or at all, about sex and sexuality. While it shouldn't be the core issue, obviously, it is something that is integral to our humanity, which makes it an important part of our lives on this earth. I had to laugh a bit when she was talking about parenting her son regarding sex. As a mom, I think that's a natural tendency to want to do for a child you've raised and nurtured. 😂 I also 100% agree about PornHub. So many people who get on there have no idea the level of abuse and drug use going on in those videos. Hearing the testimonies of women and men who have made it out of that is heartbreaking. It grieves me so much that porn has become such a casual thing in our society. 😢 Anyway, all that to say, "Great interview!" You were directly on topic while keeping it light and appropriate in view of the Word and what it has to say about such things. Keep up the great work, both of you, and thank you for sharing! Blessings to you. 😊

I wasn't raised under "purity culture". Just the biblical admonition that sex was for marriage. When I met my husband, he wasn't a Christian. He was very respectful of my virginity and boundaries, but I was in my early college days with little spuritual support and no established time with God. Basically, my defenses were down. We fell without losing my virginity. I call this a technical virgin. We lie to ourselves that it's okay because we didn't go all the way, but our consciences are telling the real story. The damage that us done in our sex lives in our marriages us the premarital sex. That's why Gid says to wait. It's not purity culture. It's our God-given conscience, and sin has consequences. Blaming a movement is just shifting the focus.
@therealdonnawagner

@@RCGWho I don't recall not taking responsibility for my own actions. My actions were my own. It was the aftermath, if you will, the legalist pressure that was damaging. Things like certain movements •can• be damaging without being directly to blame for actions, especially to people who are young in the faith and don't know any better. I had little understanding of grace in the broader sense. I knew that I had felt specific grace when the Lord changed my heart, but I didn't grow up in the church and, where I was attending church at the time, they preached that you had to immediately repent of every tiny little sin or, if you died unexpectedly, you would die "unsaved". That is incredibly Pharisaical, not to mention a huge amount of weight that no sinful human can ever truly lift, for someone just getting into the Word and not having read that the Lord's love for (and ability to save) His people is very different and abundant even when we screw up. The "purity" programs going on in our area and church at the time were an extension of that and I know for a fact I'm not the only person among the people I knew hearing that message that felt there was no other option than to enter into a marriage because of mistakes that were made. In your own comment, you make the statement that you had "little spiritual support and no established time with God" that led to your "defenses [being] down". Now, are you blaming others not spiritually supporting you for your actions, or are you giving context to what may have contributed to your decision-making? Because there is a difference. Just like legalist movements do damage, so does the lack of spiritual parenting that brings accountability and loving correction within the Church. It's not to blame, but it would have been beneficial if things had been done differently. That my was point in my original comment.
@RCGWho
@RCGWho 2 ай бұрын
@therealdonnawagner I was saying that I was in a bad spiritual, vulnerable place. I'm not blaming nonexistent support. Godly influence is helpful to everyone. We're more vulnerable isolated. I understand the issue that once you sin (going all the way or not), women feel committed and bonded and then feel like they need to get married to "fix it ". I felt that way. It wasn't put on me by someone. Repentance and walking away from a foolishly entered relationship is plan B. Plan A is nor entering stupid relationships and sinning while in them. I guess what I'm still not understanding is whether you and others bitter about purity culture are saying sexual sin is not as big a deal as they were making it out to be? Is that what you mean by legalism? Like "we can make out, we can sate around, we can feel up, etc"?

He was walking down a street in Berlin and he was recording himself walking and talking. He passed a large building and on the flagpole outside was a gay pride rainbow 🌈 flag. And I thought to myself how things have changed globally. I am in my sixties in age , and lived as a gay man . I no longer do. I have changed my life and i am Christian now. But I remember how hard it was being gay years ago. The homophobic hatred was common. I experienced it . I have nothing to do with gay pride events now. I have no desire to get involved either. I just stopped this at 3:40. Yes, Cynthia: Men will lie to have their way concerning sex. And the thing is that it's not really their way that they are having. It's the 'father of lies' ways that they are pursuing. This gets possibly worse where same sex is concerned. Becket, for you and everyone else here who went through the same sex scene in one form or another (including me): What was ever REALLY attractive about it? Where REALLY was the attraction of it?

@@Yj-Fj It wasn't. Homosexuality, for a lot of the men involved in it, is somewhere between an addiction and a compulsion. Then there is the media. They have put false ideas and false emotions and desires concerning sexuality into millions of people. The media is capable of taking the most pernicious and disgusting things and making them seem 'attractive' to people. I am the son and grandson of Jew Christ-haters who worked in the media. This, of course, goes beyond sex. Because of the media, and it's overwhelming effects, most people don't know their true feelings about not only sex, but the food they eat and the clothes they wear.

One thing I have noticed over my long life, is that there is no forgiveness for women committing perceived sexual sins. God and Jesus forgive of course but not everyone agrees. Women can be severely injured and even killed and destroyed emotionally, physically, and spiritually by any accusation, true or untrue. Sex is not safe for women and can be used as a weapon. p.s. Please don’t say “well you have to be careful who you choose!” That’s putting the blame back on the victim.

As a teen in the 70s, I was basically told everything was permitted, yet as I became an adult I couldn’t believe that feminists were okay with , and still are okay with women debasing themselves in appearance and behavior under the guise of freedom. great show. love the honesty about the struggle to stay pure. And what Cynthia said about the church not talking about all the distortion going on with sexuality. That if we don't talk about it, it doesn't exist mentality is such a killer. Love your show Becket. You have a great interview style and such interesting guests.

Cynthia is such a real and likable person. I want to hang out with her. I never heard of her before you had her on the first time. This video must’ve been filmed some time back since she’s speaking of June 18th being in the future. I will continue to pray for your journey Becket. I look forward to your attraction to men being a thing of the past. Keep your subscribers posted on any specific prayer requests you have. My power has been restored after Hurricane Beryl. Praise God for that. This was a category 1 hurricane and it’s criminal how much the infrastructure is no longer set up to handle all that comes with it on so many levels.

I believe we should ask the Holy Spirit to help us to go against the current and NOT say 'Oh my G-d'. I believe we are taking the Lord's name in vain. I see a lot of Christians even writing the initials (acronym) standing for that phrase, also, which is used a lot , and I find it very uncomfortable. My mother told us we shouldn't say anything even similar like 'Gosh' because we were basically saying the same thing but just covering it up...

You're not won't, but taking the Lord' name in vain is so much more than this. Wearing His name and living a life inconsistent with Scripture, is beating His name in vain. A marvelous book is, "Bearing God's Name" by Carmen Imes. 🙂💗🙏📖

Adults really need to mentor their young about sex and marriage. Parents not talking to their children about it because it's weird and uncomfortable leads to their children finding out about it from media and peers, and they'll get their ideas from there and think it's normal. And by media, I mean not just movies and TV shows, video games, but also explicit adult content.

Their songs were played at discos, and my dad had some of their songs on mix CDs. We had a private small group of women that were working on our marriages. We were going to do a book together about sexuality but the leader shot it down. I argued for it, stating that it did not have to be graphic or a counseling session. But simply a biblical perspective on sexuality. The amount of people who say they were sexually abused as children. If parents don’t teach their little ones about sex and about protecting themselves from predators - they really are playing with luck. They need to know this could be ANYONE. If they believe it was inappropriate, they need to run to you or tell you. Also, please don’t send your littles to sleepovers.

About 40 years ago, I decided I would set a pen and notebook next to my television and take notes on everything learned watching it. One year later I had recorded only one comment and I wasn't sure what I meant when I made it. In the 50s the TV was " an idiot box " and in the 70s it was "the boob tube." Who doesn't know that TV has gotten more worthless everyday since the first time someone turned one on. Great conversation. It seems like the cool kids who've recovered from their falls through the grace of God, Beckett and Cynthia, have more influence than generational Christians in our culture. How do we make the kids who grew up Christian and always followed Christ the "cool kids"? Right now, it seems like they're just place holders, keeping the faith alive, waiting on the prodigal sons and daughters to get saved and come home. If the Christian kids were the cool ones, we could save a lot of other kids at younger ages and save them from so much harm and heartache.
