Great video especially as I'm Welsh. There's a plaque on the floor commemorating Owen in the square at Hereford. I always stop and read it when we visit. We recently visited Edmund's tomb at St David's Cathedral. Now all that's left to do in February when we visit Westminster Abbey is pay respects to Henry VIi - although we did visit Pembroke Casle where he was born, for the third time the day after St David's. This is my most beloved part of history! Shakespeare could not have written it better if it were fiction! Sir Rhys Ap Thomas was also a legendary and superbly loyal trustworthy knight! His story is incredible on its own! Henry the VII started the dynasty with such promise and dedication, it all seemed to unravel after the death of Arthur. I love medieval history!

Great video! Thank you for taking so much of your time into making these, and especially in honoring my previous request. I’ve also been interested in learning about Cerdic of Wessex. Æthelstan, as well as the entire English monarchy, descended from him (I may be incorrect though). Cerdic is also a figure that I have not found much information on. However I am aware that he lived a thousand years before the Tudors and you may not be familiar with that time period.

Two points interest me. The mental problems of Henry VI clearly came from the Valois line. Catherine’s father was quite mad, yet that mental weakness doesn’t seem to have been inherited by either of her Tudor sons. Secondly, I’ve never thought Margaret Beaufort originally had designs on the throne for her son until Richard III usurped his nephews and imprisoned them, making Elizabeth Woodville an ally and Elizabeth of York a pawn in the power play. I believe all Margaret wanted for Henry up to that date was recognition and a return of his patrimony, allowing him to live as a noble in England. Richard III showed Margaret, and probably several others, that the throne of England was really up for grabs by the most ruthless, the most cunning, the most powerful, those with the best connections and the strongest army. At that stage Margaret Beaufort, doting mother, saw the possibility her son Henry could be King. A huge gamble to take with your only child’s life.

Women know why she fell for a hunk with a brain! 😂 I love this story. I've longed to know more about Owen Tudor. The snobbery of the caste system, yes caste system in the English society. This was a love match. He was persistent! She loved that. He was brave. Swoon city! Talk about upward mobility. Owen and a Queen started a dynasty. Yet historians speak about this man as if he were scum.

My question is simply has there ever been any evidence that Owen Tudor and Catherine of Valois were ever actually married!? Any contemporary reference to an actual marriage having taken place.
@wynfordemanuel4792 Жыл бұрын
As far as I know there is no documented evidence of the marriage. However, circumstantial evidence seems very strong. The social mismatch lends itself to a discreet / secret wedding. A couple (including an ex-queen) living together and having many children would have been frowned upon by society. Co-habiting and producing offspring would have been unacceptable to the church. The two were known as a long-term couple with as many as six children, and so there is perhaps no reason why they should not (in time) be seen as legally married. At a time of great rivalry there seems to have been no debate over the children’s legitimacy. I am not an historian, but I understand that Tudor historians accept that there was a marriage. Thanks for the comment.
@anthonytroisi66829 ай бұрын
The restriction on the Queen's remarriage was developed because no one wanted Katherine to marry Edmund of Somerset. There were rumors that Edmund Tudor was the fathered by Edmund of Somerset. Edmund of Somerset must have had a great deal of masculine appeal because his name was later linked to Margaret of Anjou, the wife of Henry VI. The marriage of Katherine and Owen possibly would have been considered illegal because Henry VI was probably still a minor at the time of Edmund Tudor's birth. No one probably cared what Katherine did because she did not marry anyone politically important and she stayed away from the English court. I think Owen Tudor was extremely attractive and that Katherine was in love with him. Isabeau of Bavaria, Katherine's mother, took so many lovers that the paternity of her son the Dauphin was a subject of conjecture. Henry VI probably elevated his half-brothers to such a high rank as a way of honoring the mother who he had rarely seen. I have always wondered about Edmund Tudor and his relationship with Margaret Beaufort. I do not a man who impregnated his small, thirteen-year-old bride was much of a gentleman. Is there any record of how Margaret Beaufort felt about Edmund Tudor?@@wynfordemanuel4792

@@anthonytroisi6682 I regret my extremely tardy response to your comment. I somehow failed to see it earlier. I agree with what you say. But as to your question, I am unable to answer it. I always wondered about Owen, and thought that he was sop for Catherine's pregnancy by the guy she was having an affair with: Edmond Beaufort (apparently, the crown refused to allow their marriage, so Catherine left court, returning after some period of time with a "husband" and a young son in tow. A young son named "Edmund"....weird or what ?
@wynfordemanuel4792 Жыл бұрын
Hi. That’s an interesting theory. However,the pair went on to have plenty of children - perhaps as many as six. That doesn’t indicate an arrangement of convenience to me. And by some accounts both were vivacious and good looking, so mutual attraction may be another factor to consider. Thanks for commenting.
