There's an argument why I do like light furies being a subspecies, especially if their habitat is evolutionary supposed to be the arctic or a colder climate between crystals or something. In that case the color white is not a disadvantage. Arctic wolves are a subspecies of grey wolves and when they interbreed with other subspecies they create fertile offspring. If you compare an arctic fox and a red fox, you can see that the arctic fox has a shorter muzzle and smaller ears than a red fox. Their features are smaller to prevent losing heat. These are even key features to tell their skulls apart. Since we don't know how female night furies or male light furies look like, we can assume that these features are key features for their subspecies and might tell something about their habitat. That's my point of view at least.

Here is my suggestion for a more detailed, less basic Light Fury Design: - Change pure white color into an off white grey or ivory - Instead of sparkle scales make them speckled, like a shark or seal. - Get rid of dragon eyeshadow - Add more obvious scales!!!! She's supposed to be streamlined like an aquatic type, so make it so that she can actually blend into her surroundings. But what do I know, apparently I need a basic design for me to tell the sex of a dragon.
@eddie-roo2 жыл бұрын
I would only add more scales. The adaptations presented by the light furies make sense for a species adapted to a snowy environment. Shorter features and less protruding fleshy bits prevent heat loss and a white sparkly coat would blend beautifully with the snow.

@@FhinxET If her scales were smooth, she wouldn't be able to blend into the sky. Take bluejays for example. Their feathers are actually grey, not blue. Then it would be gray. Only the Martine and Hare have true white fur. Even they have black spots to blend into rocks, ears for the Hare, the tail tip for the Martine as well as its ears now and then. Snow leopard are gray, Arctic wolves are a cream-gray color. Polar bears have clear fur and black skin. Snowy owls have white feathers speckled with creams, blacks grays, and even browns. There is no pure white animal unless albino and they don't survive due to being easily spotted and killed, skin cancer and insects finding them easier. Only domesticated animals can be white, and the have genetic problems up the wazoo. Also, white birds are super easily spot and again, are never fully white. Seagulls, you never miss them, now think if they were as large as horses.

That's what I'm thinking! Lightfuries hunt on cloudy yet not stormy days. A night fury hunts at night and uses the sensory organs to tell dragons from other animals or humans and to detect and find their way at night. This was made before the movie came out, so I'll give passes to the lack of camouflage discussion; we later discovered that the light fury has microscopic white scales that refract light and make her disappear when she flies through fire/lightning, which admittedly was a logical reason to make the light furies white and "glittery" that fit with other dragons' abilities in the Dragons universe. That being said, I am STILL pissed about the light fury's design despite that clever workaround. It wasn't explained in the movie that she's a subspecies, and we're led to believe that she's just Toothless' beautiful female love interest, maybe a different species maybe not unless we seek out other HTTYD media. She sticks out like a sore thumb, and it's confirmed in the artbook and developer commentary that she was deisgned to look as feminine as possible to appeal to Toothless and the audience, which is super disappointing when you take into consideration literally every other female character in the series, whether dragon or human. They all have some level of dishevelled appearance and toughness about them, even Hiccup's love interest, and in the dragons' case females and males are almost always indistinguishable. That's really rare for animation, and I held HTTYD close to my heart for portraying the "ugly" side of female characters for a change, showing they're just the same as their male counterparts. At least until THW came along, that is.
@amberhougland71682 жыл бұрын
I personally never thought she was an actual Night Fury, once they said Light Fury I was like 'oh, she's a different species' Because she is a different species, that gives her room to look as different from other dragons as the other dragons do. I appreciated her design because it did make her look sleek and beautiful, and I appreciated the fact that she put out there that it isnt bad if you look beautiful but not maybe as rugged or tough as the other dragons. It just adds more variety to the dragon population in the franchise as a whole, just like the human population. I never thought for a moment that she was helpless, however, and never associated that with her design. From the moment she shot that plasma blast at Hiccup when she first met them, she was the powerful,beautiful, strong-willed dragon she was supposed to be. (And, by the way, she didnt take crap from Toothless either. (SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE) When he drew her a picture of herself and she stepped on it by accident, he growled at her like he did at Hiccup in the first movie. However, instead of moving, she growled back at him like 'hey, watch it buddy, it was an accident' Toothless was shocked and immediately straightened up.) As for being a different color, so what? She's a different species. She does different things than other dragons, unique in her own way. That applies for her design too. For the fact that it made her look way feminine, well we havent seen a male Light Fury. What's to say they dont look like that too? I liked they added more variety into the dragon population, that really expanded what could be in the dragon world. (The Night Lights were a nice touch, and added to that idea) Overall, I appreciated the amount of biological research that was put into this, but I respectfully appreciated her design and didnt see any flaws. I respect your opinion, this was just me contributing as well :)

Even if this is just based on the trailers, they literally say in the trailer that she "disappeared", already tipping us off that we have a dragon that can turn invisible.

I don't like her, she literally only exists to be attractive and pretty, her claws are there just for the sake of existence, they are not for her defense, they are not made to help her hold on like a toothless one, and they are useless in a fight. , and her teeth are completely round, it must be difficult for her to eat or defend herself. Dreamworks let us down in this latest movie, it's full of holes and mistakes, and we must admit, if they had given the movie a lot of thought it would have been better, and if they put a female night fury to be the toothless partner. . , it was very sad to see Toothless abandoning his whole life and all those he loved so much, who cared for him so much, the dragons he commanded, which by the way he would be willing to throw them away as we saw in the movie, for a female he met 3 days ago. ... I'm sure yes. if he waited any longer and went looking with a sob he'd find a female night rage, and it's worth more than dating the first woman he sees around, and in the end if toothless was really the last, his species is completely over, and it's over. creating a subspecies that should only be fertile by script.

detail: she has NO personality and if her personality is the one shown in Homecoming, I feel sorry for toothless, she turns out to be super manipulative and selfish, in addition to being jealous, in so long that toothless didn't visit the hiccup, imagine how many times she did the same as in homecoming, toothless drew a picture about ie visiting his best friend hiccup, and she literally rolls her eyes at him in pure disgust, and then she walks away and he still goes to comfort her, and then she seduces him to distract him, and it works , he simply forgets that he was thinking about hiccups and goes after her, she must live holding him for a long time in the hidden world, poor toothless, he deserved better, maybe if he had thought a little more and not joined her in the first days that met her.

Dragons had also been hunted/killed by vikings/humans up until possibly the last decade so...in her book hiccup was definitely the exception and not the rule, so I can easily see why she might be dismissive of her husband teaching their kids only the happy side of the story when humans are the dragons only (known) predator

Actually quite a lot of reptiles show extreme sexual dimorphism, with many snakes the female is much larger than the male and some lizards have incrediblely vibrant males with females being a duller, more camouflaged version (google Spider-Man agama they are crazy) Personally I think she’s this colour due to leucism, a gene which is common in birds and reptiles but can be found in other places. This gene causes white or pale patches of skin or in some cases, mostly with snakes, they’re entire body is this pale colour, interestingly enough it doesn’t effect the eye like an albino allowing the natural colours to come through. Of course her eyes are blue but if it’s anything like a cat (part of the inspiration behind this species) it could be an age thing, but there’s also another gene found in reptiles that gives them blue eyes so it could be that too.

Used to not be the strongest physically clearly highly intelligent. Again he reminded me of a jaguar or snow leopard. He had grace even being a male character he was elegant, he had sass and was a dog to hiccup. Even in the Race to the Edge he was still like this, not animated as well because the episodes have to be made a lot quicker. But he still had grace and again whenever I think of httyd 3 toothless and even 2 to an extent even thought I love that movies plot. He acts like a dog. Yes he is trained to an extent but he is still a wild animal. Even lions and wolves that are raised my humans are more gentle to humans yes but are still very much wild animals. Toothless wasn’t even raised by hiccup either. He wasn’t never meant to be the strongest of them all. If he were to fight a monstrous nightmare like hookfang, toothless would win yes but only from his small size and speed. That is while in the first movie they went into the black clouds to where toothless had a huge advantage with his speed, size and coloration. But toothless is still handicapped at his tail. These are both missing a very important point about the light fury. She literally has the ability to turn invisible (As seen in the trailer) and is probably a big reason why she's white and glittery in the first place. Light furys in a way are a counterpart to night furies where she also probably wouldn't be hunting at night, but instead during the daytime where she can reflect the sunlight off of her in a way where it helps her disappear in the sky or even more so into clouds which are white and resemble the light fury's skin almost perfectly. Her eyes are blue like the sky because any other colour would stand out way too much and give away her location in an instant if she was to look around. (There's a certain kind of fish that does this as well but I can't remember their name so if you know it please let me know!). She wouldn't need long whiskers either because there's more light during the day so she can just use her eyes to see where she's going, so instead they've been reduced probably also so that she is more aerodynamic and can move faster in the sky as well. The other thing to note is that Toothless doesn't show an interest in eating land animals like sheep, but instead he prefers to eat fish. In the first movie it's even mentioned a couple of times that Toothless never went after the sheep or would kill humans, and when he was injured he seeked out a pond where there were fish for him to catch. I would assume that it would be the same for light furies where they both would most likely hunt in the ocean by diving down from the sky into the water to catch fish like Pelicans, Cormorants, or other birds that do the same which is why blending into the sky as opposed to the land would be more important. This could also be another reason why she has less textured, bumpy, scales because scales can create friction, especially when it comes to moving through the water. Her skin texture looks a lot like an actual axolotl or other water creatures like dolphins or even a beluga whale as well which suggests that light furies have adapted to become water dragons. She also even has a dorsal like fin along her back which probably is like a fish's dorsal fin to help keep her steady in the water. Another reason why her whiskers are short is also because long or big whiskers would slow her down in the water, so instead they're smooth and also look like they press up against her head to prevent them from catching on the water as she's trying to catch fish or from other fish or predators catching them and turning her into prey. This also explains why they're seen as so rare and hard to find because oceans are huge and also very unpredictable, especially during that time period. It's virtually impossible for anyone to explore the oceans fully compared to the land and it makes perfect sense why Light furies would adapt to the ocean in order to avoid their biggest predator, humans. It's a bit too difficult to tell right now as well but I wouldn't even be surprised if light furies had adapted to be able to even breath underwater or hold their breath for way longer then night furies. Soooo... To me the light fury's design makes complete sense and no, I don't think that "They're feminizing the light furies blegh" at all. Her design makes a lot of sense and will probably make even more sense once the new movie comes out. Of course these are all just theories and I'm not a scientist or anything (Although I do love biology and I watch way too many animal documentaries... And I also do a lot of research on animals as I am a character designer myself -Not really professionally but it helps me pay the bills- so I guess those are my credentials? Haha) and I'm just writing this off the top of my head so there's probably flaws in my prediction or idea as to why the light fury is designed as she is... Buuut maybe this will help fill in the gaps just a little bit?

The redit person did have a fair argument, however, quite a bit of what she said has plenty of exceptions in real life. As for the size difference, the majority of lizards have smaller females. She compared them to birds, but are dragons not reptiles? Sure, they fly, but that does not make them a bird. They still are scales covered, so I feel a more strong argument could be made with comparison to reptiles. As for the coloration, she could easily blended into clouds, into mist (both the cloudlike mist and mist made from waterfalls). Also, being such a powerful animal with the ability to scratch, bite, and blow your face off with a plasma blast. Blending in isn't as important for animals with tons of defense. Also, as for the lack of scales, there are in fact many snakes bred to have "no scales" which are actually just extremely tiny scales the human eye cant see. As for the tiny facial fins, this can easily be a result of her being a different speciese of animal. If it is simply a difference between the sexes, isn't it similar to how men tend to have a larger muscle mass? Perhaps it's an attraction thing, like how many male lizards jave a flap of skin to extend from the throat for attraction while tje females don't , or have tiny ones. For an example, look at iguanas. In all, I feel that there is nothing biologically inaccurate in the light fury, and in the end, it's a fantasy film. Not everything needs to line up 100% with real world animals. They're dragons, and so the animators should be creative in the I design.

Trent H. Dragon Tamer nah, white colour doesn't blend in mist or clouds. A white colored female compared to a pitch black male doesn't make sense. The design is just awfully cliché and and they could've done better.

It was later comfirmed that her scales are reflective. So when they are heated up she “disappears”. When she cools down though she will most definetly reappear. What I think happens is that she has a cooling system in her body, that can rapidly cool parts of her body. Or the other simple anwser is that they fd up again and made another plothole in the movie. So she will still need to blend in, because she can’t keep herself warm and if she’s in a bad situation where she can’t get seen, she will most likely die, because plasma blasts are loud.

It's a LIGHT fury, not a NIGHT fury. And as we've seen from the movies and show color being a major factor in anything besides being able to tell the same dragon from another her argument about color doesn't hold up to the lore. I don't think the color is important as far as a Light fury being lighter colors than a Night fury. I think this is more a matter of opinion and design... I mean technically we see no sexual dimorphism in the other dragon species, Meatlug and Stormfly for instance look just like any other Deadly Nadder of Gronkle. If it was the case between their genders there are equal reasons why there could be dimorphism in the light and night fury species considering they are said to be intelligent and possibly not from that part of the world. I mean croc males for example are much larger than the females as well as bullfrog. Then there's also the simple reasoning that males need to advertise themselves and ward off rivals while females often do not. there is already a snow white dragon the Snow Wraith in the canon its not too far fetched to think the dragons have many adaptations

I didn't think about that till you said it. Polar bears are WHITE to Blend into the Snow. So in mountains like I'm assuming where they first see her, there is a lot of fog. Fog is also white when thick. There could also be ice caves and it's a snowy environment. It makes sense. The part on her head are possibly also short do to its a Sub-Species of the Night version. Just because their shorter doesn't mean it's a bad thing. The "whiskers" could be more sensitive and not need to be longer. The other thought is with blood circulation of why they are short. For Toothless his are longer but from what we've seen so far he hasn't lived in cold icy place yet. Could also be that if he ever needed to seem bigger to scare off something that wanted to battle him. With the Light Fury, all she would have to do is blend in to with the fog or snow or where ever she may be. From the trailer we also see how she can shoot and disappear. To top off a thought, just because shes white wouldn't be a bad thing at night. When it would come to prey they would assume its a shooting star. By the time the prey realizes it's something that is going to eat them it would be too late. Hears my reason. She's glittery... So for this version she is actually a better hunter. As such is with lions. The females do the hunting. As for Toothless he has a better chance when it's night time. Or any where that is dark. In day time regardless of time of year and season he would have a hard time for he sticks out like a sore thumb. So in the end... She's perfect the way she is. A hunter for the day and the night. The only why she would stick out is say a place that never has any fog or snow. And there was no mountains or hill to hide in a cold type of cave.

I think this can be explained by saying that, in reality, the night furies are a subspecies of the light furies and not the other way around. The light furies only live in the hidden world, because when they came out they evolved into the night furies, more prepared for the outside world and that's why they became black and had other changes in appearance. That's why toothless also has invisibility as a recessive characteristic, he doesn't need it anymore, because he is black, like the night sky. Remember that the night furies were originally based on axolotls, which live in caves, like the hidden world. Who looks more like an axolotl, the night fury or the light fury? With this, many of the points that girl mentions as an evolutionary recession are nullified. On the issue of feminising it, we hardly know what the males of this species look like, so I can again rely on all of the above. I hope I have made myself clear
@Oceansouls Жыл бұрын
The animators said themselves lightfurys are the subspecies and they also said they tried to make her as feminine as possible. Proving the Reddit post right. They wanted to make her sleek and aluring. Also all dragons come from the hidden world with many of them being colorful. How come they didn’t evolve? Meatlug and the other Gronkles are the only dragons that have some kind of realistic or como appearance. But I have seen some green and purple. But the light fury doesn’t make sense at all. Why not just make a different dragon or make a female night fury. The female being gray and having longer wings or antenna making her look just graceful as toothless when he flies. She can even have yellow eyes or something. Or maybe, make a new dragon that isn’t basically an altered version of the main dragon that doesn’t make any sense. A lot of people say she is semi aquatic but again we see them in httyd homecoming and she doesn’t interact with water or swim. And if she did couldn’t they given her webbed feet and gills, dragon again are not mammals so I would think they would have them like yk the water dragons.

You have a few flaws in your arguments here. Or rather the person who wrote this did. First off, to accept this argument you have to accept that the Light Fury is just a Female Night Fury, which is not the case. As you mentioned, the Light Fury is a subspecies of the Night Fury which means it doesn't have to have the same characteristics as it's parent species. It's like saying that a Male Tabby cat is better suited to protect the young vs the parent female Orange Tabby cat because the male can blend into the environment better. To add to this argument, Toothless's origin is feline; not avian or reptilian. If you want a good toothless drawing reference look up a picture of a cat and squish its head down a little, you will instantly see what I mean. Secondly, this is a movie. If we really wanted to be biologically accurate here, Hiccup would have gotten his head bitten off when he cut Toothless loose. The idea was to stretch the imagination and go beyond nature. For freaks sake, we are talking about a movie all about DRAGONS! They aren't going to be biological about it because there isn't a reason to be. Third, your argument about the Light Fury not being able to blend in is revoked by the trailer. Not really sure how it works, but the Trailer clearly shows a shot of the white dragon shooting a fireball into the sky, flying into it and disappearing. Maybe a little obvious at first, but completely invisible after. Fourth, the light fury scales are still there. However, they are smaller and against the white color of the dragon, it makes it very difficult to see the highlights of the scales. If you look closely though, you will notice them. Fifth, coming from an animating perspective, the Light Fury not only looks great, but is a great counterpart to it's darker parent species. It give a contrast, which is a very useful design tool used consistently by artists. How often do you see a copy and a paste of a character from a movie? Hardly ever, because it is lazy design to take a character and change just a few things about it. I think they did an outstanding job when it comes to a counterpart for toothless. Sixth, it is specifically mentioned in other HTTYD movies/shorts that Berk has a primarily Winter environment (The Gift of the Night Fury even goes so far to say that it is winter 90% [I can't really remember the exact percentage, but it was above 50%] of the year in the intro) Coupled with this, the Trailer also highlights an entirely new environment. Isn't the name of the 3rd movie "HIdden World"? I would expect it to live up to that name, and from what we have seen of this environment is that it is very neon. There are a lot of bright and vibrant colors that would stand out far more than white. The argument of the eye's vs the antennae also would not be valid. Although the hidden world is underground, we have also seen that it is full of light. It did not seem like the characters needed a torch to navigate through the cave as it was lit by bio-luminescence. This would mean that the Light Fury's eyes would likely still be developed and would not need to rely on antennae as much, especially considering the contrast provided by the environment. She would easily be able to navigate the cave without antennae. Seventh, you stated that you were remaining "politically neutral," but look at the title of your video. "The LIGHT FURY design is WRONG" That doesn't sound neutral to me, especially considering your argument was heavily weighted towards the redditers point of view. Eighth, This argument is all based off of small clips seen from a trailer. We have 2 1/2 minutes of footage to back these arguments, most of which were clips from previous HTTYD movies. A 2 1/2 hour production is yet to come and we know hardly anything about the Light Fury. You haven't even given this design a fighting chance before heartlessly shooting it down from the sky, much like Hiccup shot Toothless down. Finally, your conclusion was that the Light Fury design was lazy and suggested that they should have made the Light Fury extremely similar to the Night Fury. If that suggestion isn't lazy design, I don't know what is. Seriously, look at the suggestions that you gave and tell me that isn't lazy design. I saw a literal copy and paste of toothless, nothing added, and a copy paste with a few random brush strokes and you are trying to say that is a more "unique" design than a fully different 3D Model. Based on that alone, I would say I have plentifully proved my point here.

The thing is though: A lightfury isn’t actually a nightfury. It’s a subspecies. In httyd, both the males and females of a dragon species have virtually looked the same, so it makes sense that since these two dragons are in fact not the same species, they would look different. I don’t think dreamworks was trying to stereotype females and males, rather they were trying to stereotype light and dark. Dark being more brooding and strong and light being softer and more delicate. For all we know, lightfurys could just look like that regardless of gender. After all, it did show them living in a darker habitat correct? Hence the more pale and weaker features. They needn’t the physical attributes to fight as they are a “flight” species and can camouflage themselves. In conclusion, this whole argument seems very pointless and illogical to me. I'm more ticked off at the boring character design than if it follows logic. Its a fantasy movie. As long as it's interesting it's good. But it's not. Its just like one of those shitty fan art 12 year olds draw with paint.net on deviant art, and post it as their "oc" being paired with toothless. Other than that, I think it's fine if it doesn't follow real life logic. Why should it? People are so focused on accuracy these days, it's like they're trying to be socially correct about it. Jfc it's just a movie. Why people care if it has stereotypical female features is beyond me. Dragons don't exist. Applying real life female biology onto fantasy creatures is downright fucking retarded, and people just like to pull a strawman argument to make themselves sound smart on Reddit. And the fact that these sorts of accuracies are practically irrelevant to the plot of the movie, and serve no other purpose but to appease biology majors. EDIT: There are female counterparts to males in real life that are actually like this; smaller features, more gentler, etc etc. So those of you saying the light fury is unrealistic and that even though it's a fantasy movie, should be "grounded in reality", are just ignorant, lmao. Also, when I say "it doesn't have to be accurate", i didnt mean it should throw ALL logic out the window. But enough where it doesn't affect the plot and isn't so jarring to the point where it's immersive breaking. You people know exactly what I fucking meant, Jesus Christ. Also the fact that the light fury is a completely different subspecies from the night fury, you have no idea how their male counterparts look like. A male light fury might actually look like a female light fury, small with petit features. So instead of insulting others and pushing your opinions down peoples' throats (you know who you are), how about you calm the fuck down and wait for the movie to come out and explain everything? I'm sure you people can be civilized.

SleepingWolf YT Its not the white that bothers me. It's the design and its features. It's face fins are too short and they look awkward, it has little to no visible scales, and nothing is unique about it. I wouldve loved if they gave her this wavy face fin that protrudes outward from the sides of her face, and curves up, forming something akin to a crown shape or whatever. And I feel like she's much more of an aquatic dragon since she lives in the hidden world, which is filled with waterfalls and small lakes. You know how Toothless has those fins on his tail? Put that stuff on the Light Fury's back and spine. Make it retractable. Just be creative for pete's sake. Instead of just slapping some wings on a beluga whale and calling it a day. I'm not angry, more disappointed if anything. Such a missed opportunity.

I mean we all saw the hidden world, which is a cave, so it is possible that light furies live there so they don't need dark colors. A lot of cave species are albino or even transparent. I also heard from somewhere (I forgot) that light furies heat up their scales and reflect their surroundings or something similar, which don't give them an evolutional disadvantage at all. Also I think the antennas are more of an echolocation device?? If light furies do live in caves they don't need that much echolocation I guess, just cause they don't go out to hunt that much. Let's wait till the movie comes out.

I don’t mind that the light fury is white and sparkly. Since it’s a subspecies, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an exact replica of night furies, and this gives the female her own individualities for the filmmakers to apply throughout the movie. With that being said, the one thing I don’t like is how smooth she is compared to literally EVERYTHING. The backgrounds are all shaded and detailed, the people and places etc and especially Toothless is extremely detailed. I just wish they had detailed her more with more visual depth. The glitter is perfect but it would’ve looked better if it outlined the bumps and spots that Toothless has... 🤷♀️

This is ridiculous, the light fury isn't a night fury so that half of the arguments shot down. Plus, she's the same size as Toothless, she just has less appendages and spines so she looks smaller, which can be evolutionary explained because she's a cave dweller and they may get in he way in tight spaces, which ALSO explains her white color as many cave dwellers gain pale coloring. In short, quit looking for reasons to complain, I don't like the charecter design either but for reasons concerning her head, it needs more "ears" and the nose is too pronounced.

They’re different species. And her scales look like that so that way, when under extreme heat they become mirror like. The glitter isn’t really glitter, but more so the glint of specifically shaped scales that will refract light in a way that would make her seem almost like a hologram. It also plays into her camouflage ability. Chances are, Light Fury’s evolved from NightFury’s millions of years ago and migrated to an environment similar to that of a seals. The sleeker design might indicate that they can swim. And the Light Fury’s Antenna things might not be as big due to cold weather, and the larger they are the harder it is to keep the entire things warm and functioning.

Well someone certainly didn't pay attention during their animation course. Every good character has a different silhouette. This is based off how we as humans, view the world. We see the shape first and then see the details. It is why we have different shapes from male to female. Also why every character does not look the same if you just black them out and see their shape. Specifically as the main characters you will not be able to tell the difference if it was just a size and a bit of colour change. In an action from or if the characters are by themselves, you wouldn't really be able to quickly tell if it was toothless of the light furry. In action sequences, you will struggle even more because of the faster motion. Secondly, it's a dragon. Fictional creatures that don't obey any real set of rules. They act like dogs and cats. With bird and lizard tendencies. With also a bit of horse thrown in there. Sure there are some real life elements placed in fantasy and fiction, but there is a certain suspension of disbelief. TL;DR It is designed to be distinguishable from other characters. It's a fictional settings.
@Alteori6 жыл бұрын
We figured that's most likely the reason for the distinction; so people could readily tell the difference especially when the animals are in flight.
@sweetkity6 жыл бұрын
heartofthedarklight You hit the nail on the head.
@LordofFullmetal6 жыл бұрын
You're saying these people didn't pay attention to the rules of animation, while you're blatantly ignoring the rules of good writing. YES, the dragons' designs DO have to make sense. If you're going to establish why a species looks a certain way, which they did, you HAVE to explain why the sub species looks different. That's writing 101. Especially in fantasy and sci fi (that's ESPECIALLY; not "even in fantasy and sci fi". ESPECIALLY in fantasy and sci fi), one of the most important things is having a set of rules you NEVER break. That's how you keep the audience engaged. That's how you make them feel like the world is real. It HAS to have a consistent set of in-universe rules. That's why Faramir in the Lord of the Rings books was such a problematic character, and ended up being changed for the movie adaptations - he broke the rules of the story's universe. You spend all this time building up the ring as this evil object that ANY good person could fall to, that has the power to corrupt ANYONE, and then suddenly you have this one guy who says "I would not pick up this thing if I saw it laying by the wayside". Boom, you've just destroyed the threat of the entire series. Now the reader's gonna spend the whole time going "but why doesn't HE just take the ring to Mordor?" or "but if Faramir's fine, why did his older brother get corrupted? He must've been a bad person" when that was never Tolkien's intention. You can't just introduce the Night Fury, say "it was hunted almost to extinction, so they're black both for hunting and defence purposes" and then suddenly introduce a white sub species without giving a really good reason as to WHY that sub species is white. You can't even HAVE a sub species without explaining why it exists, because the very concept of a sub species implies some kind of evolution. Why is there a white Night Fury? Why did that evolve? What purpose does the colour serve? Why doesn't she have LONGER antennas than Toothless if she's white because she lives underground? You can create a different silhouette without being an idiot and sacrificing the audience's ability to suspend their disbelief. Also, your "each character HAS to have a different silhouette" argument is kinda bullshit anyway. I can think of tons of examples where that hasn't been the case, particularly when it comes to animal characters.
@heartofthedarklight6 жыл бұрын
For one, I never said the it doesn't ignore story writing. But I do agree that the design needs to be influenced by the lore and fit the lore. However, my counter point would be we have no idea what's the reason or if they do give one. We have the trailer but that does not give you any information in that regards. So I cannot justify the lore side of the character design nor can you argue it was poorly written because neither of us has seen the movie yet. Maybe when it comes out we are able to better judge the lore. However my argument was how shitty the examples and excuses to the OP post. They say why and that they have these qualifications while ignoring reasons why it was done. I argued from the design stand point and it is still valid until the movie comes out. I would retract that when it does and there isn't any real good reason behind it. Don't get your knickers all twisted up man. Chill, it's a trailer with a new character that for one needed to be distinct and secondly, we have no idea what the lore is behind the light furry.
@heartofthedarklight6 жыл бұрын
Also to add to my comment, if you read the others, the sub species was someone else's theory... I did not come up with it. Not sure why you're bring it up as a point because it wasn't mentioned nor is it cannon. It was a theory based off the trailer. If you read the other comments rather than, be quick to jump the gun there, you would have also seen someone mention that apparently, the dragons are based off cats. Where the colours changed with in the same breed of cats. While also the colours and looks of the whole species, has different variations. A species do have different looks. Take a look at humans, we all have different colour skins and looks. We are't sub species of one another but a divergent in the genome. So I don't see how you can't suspend your disbelief that an animated movie about dragons can have different colours within the same breed. Happens in nature all the time. Though I say the different abilities is weird but maybe they can explain it in the movie. If not then that's a plot hole. Otherwise I don't see a problem with my initial comment about why the toothless and lightfurry looks different. If they looked the same then there is no way the audience can tell from a glance.
@thevermillionjacket72253 жыл бұрын
She- she- she is a different breed of the “Fury” dragons maybe she is the female variant of her species, now yes what you say is the correct stand point from an animation view needing to show the sexual dimorphism between the two but she is still a different breed with different survival traits that she might need a smoother and more “small” profile to her.

or she needed to be a simple female like how its canonly stated by the designers who made her design :) you are wrong, the only reason she looks like that is ecause she is a female, she she has to be weaker, smaller, rounded, smooth, no scars, no details, no scales because as a female she couldnt look too ''reptilian'' as they stated

Here’s my theory: we have never seen light furies, other than this one, outside of “the end of the world”. We can probably assume that the light furies are white because they live in a colder climate. We see other light furies in the giant hole in the ocean thing, and we can safely assume their are male light furies. If light furies lived everywhere people would have noticed them. Maybe the light furies hunt throughout the day. If they almost all live in the hidden world, meaning that there aren’t many land masses around then. Meaning they would probably eat mostly fish, and fish aren’t that smart. The light colour and sleek design would be better for catching fish from an evolutionary standpoint. Also ITS A FREAKING MOVIE JUST LET PEOPLE ENJOY IT. But what do I know

All great points! I think agree with the during the day thing, but not only because they would be good for fish. I think their coloring would be great for camouflaging in clouds before dive bombing down the same way night furies do in the night sky. Their smoother design even helps them blend in with the round clouds because honestly, when have you ever seen a really sharp cloud? It would be a good skill to prevent from having to shoot a flame, which would attract some attention before she could "disappear". Now touching on the point of them living in colder climates, her scales (or skin) would be great for that! Seen throughout the movie she often shimmers, and that would often help her blend in with piles of snow (It seems similar to the way a snow leopard blends in with snow and rocks thank to their spots). Really over all, they're good adaptations for where the light furies live. I absolutely agree!

Just trying to develop onto this, but, If light furies live in colder climates wouldnt they have much more blubber then night furies like seals and walruses? My inner fan is saying: I don’t care, we’ll probably get more information in the movie And when I was watching this, I couldn’t help thinking “Subspecies” and the complaint on how she looks more feminine. Honestly, I could care less, she’s beautiful, and we see her act like a wild animal when she’s in a cage, and in the presents of humans. She fine and I can’t wait to see what they do with her. But I have to point out that she is a subspecies, and that means she isn’t going to look a hundred percent like female Night fury, and what if female Nigh Furies look smaller and slimmer, it means they can be more agile when hunting. And if we see a male Light Fury, what if he doesn’t look at all what Toothless looks like, maybe it would be smaller then Toothless, or the male Light Fury is just as smooth as the female and has soft feathers? I also have to point out, that maybe the reason she lived so long, is because Light Furies live in places where she is safe and humans or pray can’t get too. Or maybe she hunts on clouded days, to hide in the in the clouds. Different traits will affect how they live, and maybe her being smooth because she uses that to “hide” herself when she releases her blast, to hide herself. If you look at the design on her wings, she might use that to appeal as is she disappeared. Also, her design can’t be wrong unless they failed to copy a real female Light Fury. She is what we see her as. So it may be unfavourable, but it isn’t wrong. I can’t speak for the animators. We can’t know until the movie comes out, and analyze what the movie gives us. If it doesn’t make sense, then just wait for the movie because everything will be clear once the last movie is out.

Very cool theories, Jennifer. For all we know toothless could look completely different than the rest of his kind. One thing though, the "whiteness" might actually be camouflage because she cloaks herself in light to become invisible, so maybe among the illuminating light of the hidden world or blinding sunlight, she will be NIGH invisible because she will be so cloaked in light that she can barely be seen and her "less sensitive vision" may actually be an adaptation to not be blinded by intense lights like harsh sunlight or the mosaic of glowing crystals also fog seems to let her move around more as seen in the trailer, probably because she is fog, mist, cloud and snow colored, and that could be another explanation for eyesight not being very important

To be honest here, from the photos you've presented, I can see how a light fury would be able to survive. The area that she appears to be found in looks misty. And idk if you know this, but white mist and a white dragon would make her completely vanish in it. Hell, you might not be able to see their eyes through that. She might live in a waterfall area, one where she would blend in exponentially with the mist, or the foam of the water. Which, would honestly make her pretty deadly. Also, she does have scales in that picture, they're just extremely small. Perhaps she has no scales so that she is faster, or can use the bio luminescence to glow bright or go invisible. In which case, that name "Light Fury" makes sense. Maybe she can glow REALLY bright, and blind attackers so she can get away. Much like how butterflies open and close their wings to scare off predators with their bright colors.

So they could very well stay invisible for most of the time hense their lack of pigment and features as you stated, they wouldnt need to be created with the same or more features as toothless if they can easily turn invisible.

Someone tell this redditor that light furies can turn invisible. The director Dean DeBois already explained why light furies are more allusive. I respect her research into the biology but she needs to realize that Toothless and Luna aren't thd exact same species. And Luna's design was meant to compliment a white cat were toothless is a black cat.
@vorpal9976 жыл бұрын
The Light Fury still needs to create a plasma ball and fly through it to become invisible. This makes a loud noise that would alert prey and defeat the purpose of camouflage. I get that the creators were probably trying to find a way to work around her coloring, but I don't think it was the best choice. Also, she has no official name. Luna is a nice fan name, though.
@TheDino4re6 жыл бұрын
I know its her fan name its easir to say that. But where you said it defeats the purpose of camouflage you kind of listed a reason of why it works. Her plasma fire is loud and bright which aids in her creating light refraction but also a distraction. For example octopusses using their ink to distract predators. Not only Can't they see but octopus ink stimulates predators like sharks' senses. The predators are distracted by the smell long enough for the octopus to get away. Or in this case luna's explosion last long enough to turn invisible and her procurer is distracted by the light and sound.

Ikr. It's a KIDS movie. The "Light fury" isn't the same as the "Night fury", cuz kids wouldn't see the difference between the two dragons. They would be mistaken by each other. So the animators made the Lighy fury white and more girl like, but Toothless the opposite of her. That makes them cute togheter. Almost like the Yin Yang symbol. I disagree with the girl, who said that Light fury would need to look bigger then Toohless. Cuz it's a dragon, and dragons relite to lizards/snakes? I personally don't think that there's anything wrong with the desigh. She looks nice cuz u can see that she's a girl. Also idk why, but this video pisses me off so much, cuz she's so serious about this. But this is only my opinion.

You could counter argue that dragons are usually associated with boys and so with this character they can bring the concept to girls. I don't see a problem in the femininity I think a lot of extreme feminists have a problem with it women are allowed to embrace what their mama gave them we don't have to seem more like men to gain respect or at least we shouldn't have to. 1. Animal females usually aren’t showing and are usually smaller than males. 2. That would make it to very confusing for the audience if both characters look the same. 3. The light fury obviously looks like she lives near the sand of snowy area in the cave so she would live fine there. 4. And white can be well camouflaged in the moon light that’s why real life ninjas would dress mostly white. 5. Evolution would lead them to change habitat. 6. A falcon is a quick attack predator while Night furies seem to be ambush predators. 7. And she has smoother skin and shorter wings because she lives in a cave so flying long distances wouldn’t be needed. And if she does live near a sandy area smoother skin would let her go quicker than sand. 8. One of the animators said she was white to make a Ying and Yang symbol. And to make her look a more cold,mysterious, and sinister character not innocent. 9. Also whispering deaths seems to be natural rivals which means that light furies and night furies would be used to cave dwellings. 10. It’s possible that Night furies are from a more sunny area while light furies might come from colder and darker areas. 11. Antennas seems to be more vestigial or for show so it makes sense why she has smaller ones. 12. It’s not lazy design it’s actually surprisingly complex. 13. It makes sense if you know what spit evolution is. 14. Compare Grizzly to Polar bears and you’ll get my main issue.

if yall are being realistic. No matter how much the animators love the project they need to make it as "sell-able" as possible. As Rebecca Perham (I can explain studios) who's friend, in fact WORKED ON THE FILM said. "They had to take a whole dragon out half way through production because they couldn't find a way to make it into a toy" plus, saying "iTs SeXiSt tO mAke iT lOok pReTtiEr " is absolutely ridiculous, it's a basic character design technique that artists use to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Also ITS A CARTOON WITH AN ANIMAL THAT DOESN'T EXIST. TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF A UNIQE ANIMAL (and from a movie that didnt come out yet) MAKES NO SENSE. Sense they debunked all of your points in the film, (i.e the white scales, body shape, and subspecies point) Sorry, passionate artist/animator here. This just kinda bothered me. Regardless, it's a well made video and I appreciate the research you did

Actually the Pokémon argument is a really bad example because that’s like comparing a lizard and a bird. Totally different animals that will look totally different. Pokémon do have gender variants and they are so subtle I doubt you even noticed them. Female pikachu have a heart notch in their tails while males are a straight zig zag. Suggesting a design be made painfully obvious to children because they think they’re too stupid to tell the characters apart is basically crippling a movie out of a lack of faith in general IQ. Never assume something needs to be dumbed down for someone else. If it does end up being too hard then they’ll grow into it. Making it have more long term substance.

Kids are only as dumb as we make them. They have potential to be way more smart, but because parents don't teach them right or as soon as they need to cuz #tooyoungtounderstannnnd waah lets wait till they're in school. or see them as naive stupid underlings, well then yah its gonna act that way. Human kids especially because they are smart they know they can get away with certain behaviors and lack of effort cuz "im too young!!" my neices now use the excuse of "im just a kid! " "its too hard!" "Im 5 i cant understand this :3" etc to get away with everything. Thing is, they just aren't taking time to even remotely try to understand it. they don't want to, so they go burn their brains on stupid tv cartoons. like spongebob. *ugh.* ... Treat others how you wanna be treated holds volumes in multiple ways. And its known in psychology if you keep putting something in someones head , especially during very important crucial growth (toddlers to teenager) such as "You're dumb" "You can't"etc, their brains will slowly start to believe and emulate that. This is why places like japan are 1-2~yrs ahead of us in certain things (example like in gaming, the 3Ds was said to be the first portable 3D screen thing that you didnt need glasses for, which came from japan. We typically dont get that stuff here till a year later. and alot of our fancy products originate from places where they are stricter on their people such as korea, japan , china etc.) Koreans especially. They don't tolerate lazyness and lack of effort they will sometimes run their people into the ground. Yet they succeed in certain things. We are always capable. The only thing stopping is ourselves and peers around us (sometimes environment etc.) another example is some birds *like chickens i mean* and cats. many think they are dumb , egotistical, "evil/mean" , don't care about their owners or want attention etc etc. and where some may hold true to that... usually the case is cuz the owner decided that in their minds as soon as they got the animal and it senses that. But i have always treated my cats with respect and love,and thus got the same in return. They care about you, if you take time to care about them. Some do make you work for it. That's good imho cuz i can't trust supposed love on sight. too fickle. too easy. i even got some to sit , give paw etc. But only if they want to. Birds like chickens can be the same way. Its all a matter of how you view and treat them, and the amount of care effort and training/teaching YOU/peers etc provide. ;)

i think this redditer is missing a crucial piece here, Hiccup says that it snows for most of the year and rains hard for the other part of it so the camouflage shouldnt be an issue there. also most dragons dont eat sheep they eat fish, the only dragon that's been shown to eat things other than fish are the boulder class dragons like meatlug who eat rocks, striker class like stormfly who can eat chicken and a mystery class dragon like the Deathsong which shows up in the TV series and that dragon eats other dragons. another dragon that shows up in the TV series is the Snow Wraith and it has the exact same color pallet as the light fury. it lives on place called Glacier Island which has snow on it year round. Dragons Edge where they live for most of the show also has a large mountain peaks which is always covered in snow. so evolution-wise impossible for this dragon to exist since theirs entire islands are covered in snow or large portions of islands have snowy mountain peaks and if its not a clear day the light fury shouldnt have trouble flying among the clouds traveling to other places it needs to be. since we've never seen this dragon before and we have no idea what biological or environmental reasons caused her to leave someplace she was safe at before.
@mclaraamorimblood6 жыл бұрын
awesome. I was thinking just that. Also, there are people talking about how they are inspired in cats... Well, mainly with street cats, it's quite normal to notice that males are not only bigger, but having a really large head. That happens because of numerous glands they have on their faces (also butts and paws) to keep their territory. So that could also be a reason why she is smaller. Btw, about the scales... Who said they where any help? They appear to only be there for astetics in the night furies... So what if the light ones reduced them? Maybe they didn't find it atractive, who can judge what a dragon likes or not. Evolution of sexually atractive characters is pretty random sometimes, look at the paradise birds for a change.

I actually like the way the light fury looks, it's graceful. Also they actually did make the light fury look more like a night fury similar to your friend's edit. They show all of the concept art for the light fury and why they went with the final design in the art book they made. Dreamworks stuck with the final design of the light fury because they wanted something appealing to the eye, they were not focusing one evolution (it wouldn't look good on screen). Basically they wanted her to be powerful and graceful (you can find those words in The Art of How to Train Your Dragon:The Hidden World) Going back to your friend's edit, they did not keep their design that was like that because it simply did not look good on screen or as an important character that the audience would see a lot. They wanted the character to be clearly feminine and to be smooth and beautiful.

@@sonicplays8740 Firstly, I never said that she was a night fury, I’m speaking in the way that she’s a subspecies, yet still explaining how her design would work, but for a dragon that lives in a cavern with mostly bioluminescence, a navy blue coloration with glowing spots would work better if camouflage is what you want for her. Secondly, the invisibility method that she uses is never for her own good, and she uses it like a waste of energy or simply showing off and ends up not using her power when needed, for example, when grimmel found berk. Thirdly, If you observed the concept art book, they mainly wanted her white for two different reasons. To tell between toothless and her (which is dumb because kids are smarter these days) and to feminize her. If you don’t believe me. There’s a quote that states “In general, it’s harder to make a female character than a male. Any wrong shape could go wrong quickly, which is why she doesn’t fall into the reptilian category.” Dragons.Are.Reptiles. No matter the dragon, it’s gonna be a reptile of some sort, this really wrong and honestly sad, since the light fury deserved much better. The least they could do is make her personality less *Emotionless* and give her more personality traits at least. You can have your opinion, but I’m sticking with mine. This isn’t to change your thoughts about her, it’s simply to make sense of the reality of the light fury’s weird traits. Have a nice day though!

@@nightdrawer4036 Not everyone watching this movie is gonna be a kid, most of them are teenagers and adults, mostly parents but well. Second, I’m not complaining on how she’s smaller, this could in fact make her faster and more lean than the night fury, which is an advantage. Thirdly, for her habitat, the color white doesn’t really suit her habitat because she lives in a mostly bioluminescent atmosphere. She isn’t aquatic or isn’t said to be aquatic either. However, if she in fact was an over-world dwelling creature, the fact that she’s white would help in an Arctic, Antarctic environment so she could camouflage with her surroundings. Please don’t bring up the invisible thing again because it only lasts a few seconds and it will possibly attract anyone who hears it. Finally, there’s no excuse with the two hearts on her forehead, her heart shaped tail, and the pink arrays of glitter on her body, that was in fact on purpose. The concept art book has quite the bit of proof on that. Her personality (my main issue I don’t care much on her appearance) is what triggers me, it seems as if toothless is a ragdoll toy to her, something to drag around and yet he still follows her even though he’s the king of dragons. Proof of this is in homecoming, where the light fury rejects the fact that he wants to visit hiccup after over a decade of not making contact. WUT.THE.HELL. Not to put the light fury in a bad light but she also doesn’t even have a cannon name other than her species. Another thing before I finish that I’ll add is that the light fury is said to be more wild than toothless, but most of her design choices say otherwise. If you compare, for example, a dog and a wolf, a cat and a tiger, or a Mountain goat with a farm goat, you can visually tell the difference due to what? Their ROUNDED features! The wolf comparing to the dog is larger (in most cases) has a longer, finer snout, larger ears, defined claws, and colors that help it camouflage with its environment, similar to the night fury. The dog however is usually smaller, shorter snout, folded or short ears, less defined claws and features, and color mutations that don’t allow it to hide respectively, like the light fury in some cases. (I’m not hating on anyone’s opinion I’m just stating mine so please I beg of you don’t take this to heart this ain’t for offense purposes, thanks!)

My theory on the light fury’s design is, I think she was designed to be white with ice blue eyes so she can blend into the clouds in the day and the moonlight at night, her ears might be smaller because she is female and supposed to not very attractive, maybe she only has 4 ear flaps(I call them that) because she has her fiery teleportation/camouflage ability. She has a spine like thing going down her neck to her Tail because maybe it is really bony so it helps defend her back from an attack, perfect to make a tooth or more fall out of a dragon’s mouth. She also has the same spinelike thing on her wrists and ankles, smaller but sharper claws perfect for scratching another dragon. Her wings are slightly smaller but they might just be like that to help her catch breezes easier. She does not have a name because she is supposed to be Toothless’ call to the wild to rule over the dragons of the hidden world. That’s my theory, I hope u guys think it’s a good one.
