Read Lions because of your interview with Nicholas Eames, and I'm glad you two finally read the book! Excited for this episode!

Lions of Al-Rassan is a very solid GGK novel. My personal favorites are his two books set on his analogue of China: Under Heaven and River of Stars. He really refines his style by then, plus River of Stars contains my favorite GGK character. Still, Lions of Al-Rassan is amazing in its own right, and I love so much about it. The final duel remains one of the best fight scenes ever for me, and for good reason. The way it was portrayed heightened the sense of impact, and really gave it a mythical sort of vibe, which is fitting for GGK's more historical and reminiscent method of story-telling. Rodrigo, Ammar, and Jehane are all such vivid characters and they bleed off the page so well. There is a sense of closeness to them, but GGK's writing also instills a sense of far-off greatness to them, especially with Rodrigo, as you guys mentioned feeling larger-than-life. Overall, Lions of Al-Rassan is amazing, and I can't wait for you guys to read more GGK! Most of his other books are definitely worth checking out.

Oh yes! One of my favorite books of all time! My favorite is A Song for Arbonne! Also ‘the surgery’ is probably my favorite scene in any book

I read it because of your recommendation in your last live stream. I loved it. It was also my first Guy Gavriel Kay book, and since finishing Lions I started Under Heaven, which is also very good.

Peeped out before the spoilers started, but I am delighted to hear that this was such a hit for you (and most everyone in the patreon!). I have only read A Song For Arbonne by GGK, but while that wasn't a new fave, I think it was one of the objectively best books I have ever read. Can't wait to try this one!

Good review guys, I just read this book too and enjoyed it. Surely the two of you read & review The Count of Monte Cristo sooner or later. It’s not fantasy/sci-fi but more entertaining then any books I’ve read in the fantasy/sci-fi genre and I guarantee it would become one of your favorite, if not absolute favourite read.

Since you now got a taste of historical fiction please read Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon, this book will knock your socks off! Debut author and I found it through the Brothers Gywnn… has the same feel as the Blacktongue Thief! Also try Boudica : Dreaming the Eagle by Manda Scott , it is masterful too! I also read Song of Arbonne, I bet you will love that GGK too, the 2nd half is 5 stars. There is main character called Blaise that is just amazing! Lastly, jump into the Lord of the Shattered Land book 1 of the Hanuvar Chronicles. It is very similar to the Witcher short stories but it is based off Hannibal & the Roman Empire! 😘

@@2ToRamble I liked the beginning and the prose in the middle, but not the ending. IMO Amar and Jehana got too perfect. They were cool in the beginning but insufferable towards the end for me. Kinda like they became Mary Sue and Garry Stue over the time, and everyone was worshiping them too much for my taste.. Opening chapter with Amar going to assasinate the khalif has one of the best opening lines in fantasy, would fit great with your earlier videos on those!

You guys are great, but it really isn’t historical fiction, and it’s not literally set in Medieval Spain 😂 it’s an amazing book though!

@GelidPrince3 ай бұрын
It's based off of historical events and he puts it in a fantasy world so he can make events that took generations move faster.
@gnothiseauton6263 ай бұрын
@@lkay398 The book is set in a fictional world closely based on our own, with the fractured Jaddite (fantasy version of a Christians, who worship the sun à la Sol Invictus) kingdoms of Esperaña (fantasy version of Spain), against the Asharites (fantasy version of Berber-Arab Muslims). The main character is called Rodrigo Belmonte, based on Rodrigo Dìaz de Vivar (El Cid). It isn't literally in Spain, so it isn't historical fiction, but it is very closely modelled on medieval Spain, so if anything I'd say historical fantasy. Even if the small fantastical element of foresight was removed, it would still be fantasy as it takes place in a secondary world.

GoK is overhyped mediocrity while TLoAR is a masterpiece. The only thing that is comparable is the scale of the plot.
